I've gotten totally disgusted with the B&N Reader program.
When I first got the phone and loaded the reader it immediately downloaded a .cab to the root and performed an upgrade. Great, I think, this is an app that's currently being supported and I had high hopes.
Upon running it though I found out what a piece of %^&* it really is. It forces a sync to B&N every time you load it! To make matters worse it takes longer and longer each time you add a book, because it has to transfer more and more data! It only supports .epub even though several of the books I owned came down in .pdb format (although that has stopped, I am able to read those few in .pdb format using the eReader.com reader, it seemed perfectly fine with them including the encryption coding using the credit card.
Anyway, what I have found about the B&N Reader is that if you try to do ANYTHING while it is busy it will corrupt your SYSTEM and never run again. So, say you open the reader and are a bit forgetful, and forget for the original Syncing library to finish, open a book, you get "Open failed" and it will then NEVER EVER open a book, old or new. The only way around this is a hard reset back to factory settings, or as I have Sprite Backup, a restore to a prior backup.
Also, if you are reading a book and change some of the text settings, font, spacing, or margins, forgetaboutit, you are toast and must do a restore.
If you download a book and try to do anything, open another book, exit, or whatever, while it is downloading, you get to do a restore.
This thing looks like it was written by a third grader (apologies if you are in Elementary School), and I am so disappointed in it you would not believe. We need to put BIG pressure on B&N to fix this piece of junk.
My guess is that they were in development with it and when M$ announced WP7 would replace WM6.5 they stopped and released it where it was. There may have been a few more upgrades that they slipped in to that .cab it upgraded with (which happens to be the same one that's on their web site), so for now we are stuck at 1.0.0.27.
Anyone got any ideas?

I have a T-Mobile HD2 which comes with the B&N eReader software. This
was one of the reasons I bought the HD2 as I have had Windows Mobile for
12+ years and used your eReader.com company's eReader for many, many
years. I have over 150 books on it.
So when I got my HD2 upon starting your reader it immediately downloaded

sync'd my library. The books came down and I was able to read them.
Then I bought a few more books and during one of the downloads I
accidentally hit the X button and closed the application and all heck
broke loose. When I restarted the application it would no longer sync
with B&N and also would not open any of the existing books on my system.
The message in light grey text in the middle of the screen is something
like "Open failed". At that point I tried logging out of the
application, it told me this would reset the application to "Factory
Settings" and I accepted, thinking I could just re-download my books.
Wrong. Upon logging on again I had the same problem Syncing my library
and no books would download.
So I'm a Sysadmin and know to back up my systems. Fortunately I had
done a Sprite backup a few weeks back and used it to get the system
fully restored and the reader working again. I found several other
scenarios that cause my reader to corrupt the library to the point that
it is unusable. Some are:
1. Trying to read a book while downloading another.
2. Closing the reader while downloading a book.
3. Changing ANY of the font or line spacing settings.
4. Locking the screen on my phone (Red hangup button locks the screen)
while the reader application is open.
Essentially this application is junk. It appears to have been written
by a third grader and your Quality Assurance group should be ashamed.
When I first had these problems the first few books I purchased I found
that if I got on the web page I was able to download the books directly,
and that they came down in .pdb format, which worked perfectly on my
eReader.com (a B&N company!) reader. I was a happy camper, I'd been
using this reader for years and love it, even helped Beta Test new
versions for several years when it was under development. Unfortunately
you seem to have plugged that backdoor and all the books I have now
download in .epub format and I am stuck using your horrible HD2 reader.
Please help me out here. I am thinking in terms of (1) Helping you Beta
Test new versions for free, (2) If you have stopped development of the
Windows Mobile version, possibly a LARGE discount (say 100%) off of a
Nook or other reader, or (3) Give us the specs for your .epub format
extensions UNDER NON-DISCLOSURE so we can write a decent reader for you.
I am thinking in terms of a public domain program.
I'd bee more than happy to discuss all this with someone in a position
to make a decision. I spent 2 hours on the phone with one of your call
center drones and all he could recommend was that I take the phone to
T-Mobile and ask them to reload the softare
BTW, I am a 54 year old Software Engineer at NASA with 35 years of

Indeed, I could adapt Freda (see http://www.turnipsoft.co.uk/freda , and discussion threads elsewhere on these forums) to read B&N Epubs in about ten minutes work, because the EPUB DRM mechanism is not especially complicated.
But unless the DRM-decoder software is written with the permission of the book publisher (B&N in this case), it consititutes infringement of the DMCA and similar pieces of toxic legislation around the world.
The software could be free (indeed, Freda is free). But it couldn't be public domain (in the sense of open source) because if you publish B&N's DRM-decoding algorithm, you are effectively publishing the recipe for how to rip off B&N books - so the code has to be developed under NDA.
If you do get a useful answer out of B&N, please let me know because I'd be keen to work on the project.

When I load up my BN reader and go to Settings --> About, I have version 1.0.0.27. There is also a Check for New Version link there that tells me there are no new updates.
The website vid likely just gussied up the splash screen. Nothing else looked different to me.
If you look carefully at the video the settings page is quite diffeerent, there are many new options, and new settings. Oh, and yes I am running the latest version, 1.0.0.27 that gets downloaded the first time you run it from a new ROM.
if there is a new version they need to release it. the version out there royally sucks.
My kids and I spend a small fortune at the local brick and mortar store, so much that everyone there knows us by name and the store manager will let my teen daughter run a tab if needed ( not a good thing for dad). They will lose all of my business over this junky reader. I bought the HD2 expressly for Ereader.
Wonder how long we have to wait for a kindle app ?
B&N Support No Help - I Installed eReader
Like Mark, I saw that the B&N reader was crippled and would show only ePub formatted books I had bought from the B&N website. My e-mails to the B&N staff basically told me to go to the phone company (T-Mobile). B&N clearly has no plans to support this product. There is no B&N reader for Windows Mobile on the B&N ebook website (althought there may be when WinPhone7 comes out).
Interestingly, the latest B&N/Nook reader on my desktop will recognize my HD2. It will let me supposedly sync and copy books from my desktop to the HD2. In fact, the books do get copied, but the reader will not recognize them. I assume this functionality is intended more for Android phones and the iPhone, which do have working B&N readers.
I still had an old version of the eReaderPro program (3.0.3fp Oct. 2007). I was able to install it. It works fine. I do have to unlock the books again after copying them to the HD2. Of course, this version will not run the newer ePub books, so I have to have two programs to access all my eReader and B&N books. I can live with that. But when Barnes & Noble sent me an e-mail offering me a free book because I had not bought one in a while, I didn't even bother.
There is a newer version of the B&N eReader that is far better, not perfect but definately usable. It should download the next time you run it or you can go to the About page and get it there. It's still not listed on the B&N site but I posted the link for it in another post.

I have spoken with BN support and they state that they do not support this app, but HTC should.
I spoke with HTC and they told be BN rep was crazy.
The only way I can sideload books is to translate them into the appropriate format (I use Callibre and choose the .epub format specific to the "nook")
Then I download one of the free books (dracula).
Then go into the root directory under program files/BN eReader and you will see a bunch of numbers. If you rename one of these with an added character, put your book in this directory, change the name of your book to the number corresponding to the downloaded book...you will find your book in the list of books you can read, but it will be named "Dracula" with the cover for Dracula.
If you want to change the cover you can drop a JPEG of the cover into the directory Temp/BNImages and do the same thing with the naming convention.
It is a decent little reader, but very unfriendly and a lot of work.
I have not used it for downloaded books from BN, but I would hope that is easier.
Try the new version, it's far better.

I already have Nook Simple Touch and yea its eink reader. I thought it was being referred that we can make it a colour ink reader... maybe i read it wrongly.

You've confused yourself by thinking all improvements have to be made to reading. Even in reading, though, there is room for improvement. The stock NOOK reader and library have a lot of limitations and problems:
Limited font selection.
Poor and fragile organizational capabilities with large collections
Mixed support for metadata in sideloaded, non-B&N content (e.g. covers, book summaries)
No support for synchronizing reading positions on non-B&N content.
Removed page numbering from table of contents.
Dropped support for Discover and Popular Science magazines.
I also got tired of B&N deciding that, because I hadn't purchased anything from them lately, I must be interested in novels with shirtless dudes and plastering them on my home screen. The first thing I did after rooting was replace the B&N library and reader with Mantano Reader Premium, which together with their cloud subscription service, keeps my reading synchronized across 5 devices, regardless of where I bought the book. Mantano can also read the newest Discover and PopSci formats with no problem. Mantano also supports additional dictionaries. I find the reading experience on my "Mantano Simple Touch" vastly superior.
Of course, there's the usual litany of performance and battery improvements:
Improved control of wifi usage and automated daily sync using Tasker. Wifi only turns on for the few apps I use that need it. No more leaving wifi on overnight by accident and finding battery down.
Improved control of wifi access using WiFi Manager. Much easier to search for wifi options.
Ability to log into captive web portals (e.g. hotels, airports) and automate login process using Wi-Fi Web Login. Unit can wake up at night and sync without manual intervention to access wifi.
Overclock, multitouch and fast screen modes (I don't use these much personally, but they work well with no perceptible battery impact.)
Automatic sync to local timezone using Clocksync (useful when traveling).
Improved keyboard with Smart Keyboard Pro.
And the usual litany of app selection:
Improved browser (Opera Mobile).
Corporate and private email (Touchdown, Maildroid)
Automated Dropbox folder sync (e.g. nightly news subscriptions using Calibre) using Dropsync.
Offline web reading using Instapaper with Instafetch client.
Travel info (Flight Track, TripIt)
RSS news feeds (NewsRob, My6Sense)
Google Voice (voicemail transcriptions as text).
And a few time-wasting games that work well on the eink screen:
Shredder Chess
Yukon Gold (there's an eink-optimized version here on XDA).

My question to you is, owning a device and having such capabilities, why would you NOT root it? A better start might have been to simply ask what people are doing with rooted devices rather than questioning the need to do so because you don't understand why. I can literally sit at the beach in direct sunlight and do these things (depending on wifi, of course). Why would I carry another device to do these basic tasks when the NST I already have does them just fine, anywhere, indoors or out? Do you find it more sensible for a corporation to define how you should use the device you paid for?

I just got a Nook UK in the last sale and it's my first one, so I'm a total noob to the e-book world.
However, I'm an android user and rom flashing addicted for long, so since I got my reader I've only been tweaking it and haven't actually read a word... haha.
So, already updated to 1.2.1, rooted, kernel tweaks and the whole lot. I haven't installed gapps on it to keep it minimal as possible, I'm dowloading the apks on my phone and installing via ADB.
So, on to the question:
by removing all these B&N apps does it mean I won't be able to sync/buy from their store?
I'm already getting to know Calibre and checking other places to buy books, but it looks like that if I remove the apps and one day would like to buy from B&N again the only option would be to re-install the apps in order to get the ebook or am I missing something?

Probably wouldn't be able to buy on device without having the B&N apps installed/enabled or maybe the standalone Nook Android app. Not sure if with that setup it'd be able to read DRM'd Nook books (probably wouldn't auto load them, but might be able to when sideloaded) but if it can't it's very easy to strip the DRM, and you can buy and download the book from your browser on your computer. Or if it's available DRM free in another store that might also be an option

That said, the Nook desktop application allows you to download the encrypted file, and all my purchased books show a download option in many places, such as on the overview page and from the "My Nook" landing. Even if the Nook itself can no longer read them, again not saying it will or won't, stripping of the DRM is trivial, Python script (also a Calibre plugin available that incorporates it and will auto strip any Nook books you import, and you can set it to auto import from a certain directory so you could point that to, say, the place where the Nook desktop app downloads them) that computes the key needed to decrypt (requires you to enter the credit card linked to your B&N account since that's part of the hash used, but the CC# is never written to disk or sent anywhere) and you can use it on any device that will read epubs, including the Nook if it no longer decrypts on device as it'll be treated like any other sideloaded DRM free book.

Sure you can download your books to your computer. Logon to your B&N Account. Click on My Account at the top of the page. In the Digital Content section click on Manage Your Nook Library to get a list of your books with links to download them.

I got an UK Nook and for some reason it works differently. I got a book I bought from the e-reader, it shows on my account library at nook.com without option to download it and using the same login at the barnesandnobles.com it shows my nook connected to my account but the book does not show at the library...it looks like they made some weird distinctions on how to handle books bought outside US or something like that.
For testing, I added a free book to my library via nook.com, and it shows on my library at the barnesandnoble.com, so it seems that the books purchased in pounds won't behave the same way and don't have a straightforward way of downloading it.
I mean, I already took the file from the device and removed the DRM, but annoying that I'm not just able to download it.
I've just received Nook simple touch. It was bought from USA and sent to Bangladesh. After unpacking, I powered on the device and followed the steps. At one stage it connects with the wifi network successfully. Then, It shows error message -"Sorry we're having trouble setting up your Nook...."
I communicated with Nook support and share the serial number. Their feedback was "my Nook is disabled, that's why it is not registering..." usually the device is disabled for lost, stolen etc cases. But I told that the device was purchased from bestbuy.com and it reached to me with intact packet. Also I have invoice of it. But they told me to talk to Bestbuy.com.
Later, I called to Nook's hotline asked that where the issue is related to the location from where I'm trying to use it. Feedback was - Nook is useable only from USA and UK having a valid credit card. It cannot be used from Bangladesh.
Now, what should I do to make it workable from Bangladesh?

As long as the epub files you wish to load on the machine are without DRM, like those in Mobileread's own library, the answer is yes. In fact, that is how I've been using the Nook ST for the last week. I'm setting this reader up for my mom who doesn't have wifi or internet access. Since I'm going to sideloading everything anyway, it seemed stupid to bother with registering the nook.
Here's how after you initially charge the nook and activate the unit:

1. Enter the Factory Screen by holding the TOP RIGHT Button and slide your
finger across the top of the Nook from left to right. A button labeled
"Factory" will appear in the top left of the screen.

But....be aware that a few subsequent posts in the same thread suggested that battery drain was unusually high when using the Nook unregistered. Maybe there are other solutions out there.But it's a start.
You can gut all the B&N stuff if you like.
You will not be able to read B&N DRMed purchased content.
You will still be able to use it for Adobe Digital Editions from OverDrive (which have other DRM).
That's how you read library books (at least here).
When unregistered B&N can use a lot of current.
Turning WiFi on but never actually using it since it was started uses a lot of current.
Turning WiFi on, using it for something, leaving it on is not nearly as bad.

I'm intrigued by this problem and have done some reading online about various peoples experiences. Many had the device registered in the US before taking possession in their respective countries. Some use non-US credit cards without any problem. It seems that there are differences which may be related to firmware versions and perhaps even to changing B&N policies (many of the posts I read are 2-4 years old).
There's a lively Russian Nook users group over on the-ebook.org. Reading through a rough Google translation (always fun) it seems that the standard approach there is to select a US time zone (change it after registration) and skip the credit card part. It might be easier to set up a B&N account on the B&N website first (although that does require a credit card--surely they accept valid international CCs?). In any case, there don't seem to be any additional issues mentioned by the Russians with regard to registration. Curious.
The OP does not state if the intent is to purchase ebooks from B&N or just to have a functioning eink reader for side-loaded material. I guess it is possible to root without registering if you never want to interact with the B&N store, then remove the B&N stuff that is causing the battery drain (or however much of the B&N stuff you want to remove).
It would help to have more info about the intended use for the Nook in question. Meanwhile, shame on BestBuy....

Yes, as warned. This is the reason to pursue other options because the battery ought to last for a few weeks, not a day or two.

Unless you have a very early firmware release (unlikely at this date of purchase), you probably can't use that old trick. It was "fixed" in the second or third firmware update so that the default Android browser became unreachable without rooting.
If you want internet access (and/or email, etc.) your best bet is to root the device. To my mind the easiest way to accomplish this is with NookManager. If you want Google apps (and access to the Play Store for more apps) then you can do that after rooting here, or follow the link to it in the NookManager post.
However, unless you want to selectively delete some B&N stuff after rooting, it would be better if you could get the device registered before you root. Now that you know at least one work-around to get the Nook sort of running, maybe try a factory reset and then approach the registration as the Russians have and see if it works for you.

However, unless you want to selectively delete some B&N stuff after rooting, it would be better if you could get the device registered before you root. Now that you know at least one work-around to get the Nook sort of running, maybe try a factory reset and then approach the registration as the Russians have and see if it works for you.

Look up back at post #4. But you will have to do a hard reset first so that the Nook goes back into registration mode.

As mentioned in post#4, I didn't find Nook registration trick in the-ebook.org
If you have a launcher installed you can simply select "OOBE" (Out Of Box Experience).
If you don't have a launcher installed, ADB:

(That's dot, small O, dot, capital O)
If you are not rooted you'll have to follow the other instructions above.

According to the Ruskies, you should select a US time zone during registration and skip the credit card (I didn't enter a credit card when I did my registration and everything went just fine--it says you can skip). I don't recall the entire registration process any more, but if you need to enter an address, use a fictional US address, something like "125 First Street, Montebello, CA 90640" (the little town where I grew up...). Ditto for a phone number if needed (818-792-6942) For an email address, something without a country identifier would be best, like a Gmail account you can tie to the Nook.
After registration is successful you can change the time zone in the Settings panel.
As an afterthought, a credit card on file is needed if you plan to have any dealing with B&N. For example, I was curious to see if I could get one of the "Friday Free" ebooks from B&N, even with my rooted and much amended Nook. Although the ebook was free I could not access it without a credit card on file. Once I gave them the card info I had no trouble selecting the ebook and it appeared (by magic!) on my rooted Nook within a few minutes. So whatever I've done so far has not broken that process. Now whether I'm going to be interested in reading that book, I have no idea, but I had to try the process

But I can bowse internet using operamini. I've tired to use facebook using operamini. But I could not able to write dot in email address field and unable to login. These are the minor problem because my primary objective is to read books.
The main problem is battery drain. So, I want to register the device to solve battery drain issue. If I follow your instruction, will the battery drain issue be resolved? Or I should unroot it and try to register?

I'm not entirely clear on the order of operations with regard to registration vs. rooting. Registration WILL solve the battery drain problem, so however that can be achieved, that's the way to go, I think. If you can, with your rooted Nook, start the registration process, then try that. If there's no way to invoke registration without resetting to factory, then do that and root again after you have registered successfully.
I don't know anything about Facebook but it may be a challenge with an older browser. BTW, there is general agreement that Opera Mobile works better on the Nook than Opera Mini. You can get that from the Amazon App Market or sideload it directly from the Opera archive here. But first, you need to clear the registration/battery drain hurdle.

Yes, once when my too-much altered Nook lost its identity I tried to use DeviceRegistrator and it failed for me too.
NookManager is your friend. Put the SD card back in your Nook and boot it up. Choose the "Restore Factory Image" (or whatever its called).
Then try to register as described earlier with your unrooted Nook. If that works, put the SD card back in again and root. Then proceed from there as you like.

I have no idea, but I would sure get closer to the router/modem on your Wi-Fi network so that you have a better than "fair" connection.
The one thing which has worried me about the registration process as described by the Russians is that surely the B&N server can tell if the registration info is coming from a server outside the US (or UK). Even faking the time zone doesn't seem likely since the information won't match the server clock that is sending it. But that's what they say worked.
Anyway, what do you have to lose? The Nook is fairly useless as a reading device if you have to charge it every day--or more often. You need to try registering it again. If it doesn't work, then you try something else.

Yes, anyhow I've to solve battery drain issue otherwise the device will become useless. That's why I'll also be there in this forum for your help.
-I tired to register near from my wifi router. Also tried by making my phone (Galaxy S4) as portable wifi hotsport. Both are Failed. I'll try again and again....
-In my device there are only few timezone options available, all are US time zone. There should not be issue selecting any one of them.
I'm thinking about their authentication policy. May be their server is checking the originator IP address first which is a non US IP for my case. Hence, it is giving error.

Yes, I thought about that too, although enough people from outside the US claim to have been able to register without any problem (few details, of course....). I suppose you could try a free proxy server (Google), but most of the free ones seem to be transparent enough that they are detected as not being truly from the country of "origin". Still, if all else fails, it's another possibility.

You don't say how you rooted it but here are some possibilities:
1. If you used NookManager and have a backup, restore it. For the device to spontaneously do a factory reset it must have had some serious irritant in the system (or a random quantum bug...)
2. If you don't have a backup and can access the apps, you can try running DeviceRegistrator. Or, you can try using the Settings app to deregister (and erase...) the device
3. If neither of the above, your best bet may be to use NookManager to invoke a factory reset and then start the whole process all over again. Not sure about the order of operations on registering vs. rooting with Nook Manager. Some rooting methods require registering before rooting. In any case, not registering your NST is reported to lead to significant battery drain, so it would be good to get it done.
4. If you reset and re-root with Nook Manager, make a backup. Backup early and often. Did I mention to make frequent backups? Nook Manager can only hold one backup on the SD card but if you connect your NST to your PC via USB while Nook Manager is running you can copy the backup to your PC. I generally keep the last 3, with short test file descriptions, just in case.
5. If/when it's all resolved, make a backup.......

Failure to complete boot up 8 consecutive times will trigger recovery & factory reset.
Since May 31st 2016 B&N are no longer supporting Simple Touch. It appears that registration is no longer possible so do not reset your machine - it will become obsolete and unusable.
Don't know how B&N get away with this. Don't consumers have rights in the USA

You sure about that? Where is this information from? I can still see/access books in my account online and "content" (what to read next, etc.) continues to populate my B&N homescreen. Stranger decisions have been made, but cutting off any revenue source when you're always running in the red or near-red seems pretty foolish.

Well, I asked B&N by email how to register my Nook Simple Touch bought recently since it just comes up with " an error page . . . . Contact B&N" as described at the top of this thread.
The reply from B&N customer service : " After May 31, 2016, you will not be able to download your NOOK digital content from NOOK. . . . . . . . Please note: After May 31, 2016, there will no longer be an option to sign into your account on NOOK devices and apps, and you will not be able to synchronize your NOOK Library from your NOOK device or NOOK Reading App.
Since the NOOK was purchased from eBay, please contact the seller for a possible return of your funds. Sincerely, . . . . . " . This answer may be specific to the UK where I am; it appears B&N gave notice that they are completely withdrawing from the UK market.
They have partnered with a UK suppermarket to continue providing books but these must be sideloaded via PC onto the NOOK ST.
That is why I consider resetting your Nook makes it worthless? I would love to be proved wrong.

Ah....so you're in the UK.
Yep. B&N pulled up stakes there, but not here in the U.S. (yet) so the OP has everything to gain in a reset IF the issue cannot be otherwise resolved. (unless the OP is also in the UK....)
I had a similar problem. What worked was using Nook Manager, rooting and then selecting "disable B&N apps" - no registration required. (Also, no Reader, and it was not possible to install Google Apps, but you can still install Cool Reader or FBReader or Moon Reader or whatever)

So when you did that, did you experience excessive battery drain like that described by those who use the "skip OOBE" trick?
Not really the same but I'm in the UK and had the bright idea or resetting my ST back to factory settings. I received the same message about not being able to register anymore and to contact B&N - so I just reflashed my Nook Manager backup and completely ignore B&N. I'm 'rockin' the newer glowlight plus now so this is just my backup device now. Using PageTurner on the ST I got around a week between charges, but I did read a bit more than 30 minutes a day!

If you live in the UK, Nook is no longer supported, so you have no way to access your defunct Nook account. All books were transferred to Sainsbury's Entertainment on Demand. Existing books are still available to read, but if any books had not been downloaded from Nook before 31st May, they are no longer accessible.

So I've learned. XDA member @the_alternate has come up with a workaround that involves reflashing the NST with a US version.
If you have/can open a US account with B&N, then you can complete registration with the altered device, root it, etc.
