Hi guys,
All this bootloader stuff is confusing me coming from an S2..
So far i have,
1. Installed custom bootloader and rooted using After OTA
2. Dont remember how, but installed Twrp 2.2
3. Installed GodMachine 81kernal using the goo manager app.
I have not used the tablet much, but have bought it recently. It came with HC and got updated to 4.0.3 as soon as I checked for an update.
The tablet was fine, had no issues and was running smoothly. Maybe it was the Amoled effect or a higher ppi in the phone, i felt the animations were a tiny bit juddery while entering the menu for the first time.
Thought it was maybe due to lack speed, hence did all of the above.. oc.ed to 1.5 ghz
Even after the OC, the UI felt the same, used antutu as a benchmark. As soon as i installd the mods, tablet became very laggy and choppy, hence deleted the Z-ram file.
On stock ~ 5000 and above.
After mods - no oc - 4800~4900. Sometimes the scores go as low as 1200.
Oc - 6800~7000, as earler scores some times go as low as 1100-1300.
Also.some times the tablet becomes laggy soon after starting and i have newly noticed that everything on the Sd card is getting duplicated, i.e another copy is being created with the same file names and same size files, but diff icons.
Since the all the above did not yeild any usable results for me - I think the tablet and the stock ICS are fine, the UI thing is an android trait (project butter in Jelly bean eliminates the UI thing i am talkibg abt)
Tested an s3 on Ics, same UI thing that i felt, but not that noticable due to screen type and size
Hence, i feel reveting everything back to stock would be a gud idea for me as i just play nomal games and watch movies, even though i like the idea of 1.5 ghz X 2 when wanted for benchies.
So ti get back to the stock 4.0.3, which file should i use? there are soo many of them.
1. Which one.s the latest one? Pre rooted, deodexed and zip alligned also would be helpful.
2.How do i install CWM? Cause when on stock, i tried getting into the recovery, an android image showed up nothing happened. I prefer to have CWM over others cause it is familiar.
3. What advanteges will an unlocked bootloader give over a locked one for skme one who prefers a stock rom? Is it manditory for rooting?
4. Any clues about the Sd card issue? also the galary is gettin my google images up, the sync is off, but j cannot turn iff the jndividual syncs.

Disabled Acer Meida, 3D photo viewer and disbled the photo syncing. Tablet is gud and fluidic now.
But while watching youtube @ 720p using Dolphin browser, the video sometime freezes and comes back again. Audio is fine. any ideas why this might be happening ?

Thats also whats happenning to me I own an s2 and this bootloader is killing me but not only that, the support here on this section is pretty low, Im seeing a lot of ppl with unanswered questions unlike my beloved s2 section here on xda, so I might not root my tab after all due to the slow and maybe none supported helpers here to help you.

flashing the unpatched bootloader will also flash cwm as well.
benefits include being able to flash cwm!!

Yes you can go about it this way if u like...good way to check your cpuid while back on HC...Do the wipes as suggested!!!

And this attitude is the reason why some people don't wish to help. You have to understand;
1. Everything here is free, and nobody places any pressure to use it.
2. Most issues that users have, concerning bootloaders and CWM, have already been answered multiple times. (search button)
3. People have School, job and family, and devote what little free time to help the others. If a person doesn't respond to a question, it's usually because;
a. They don't know the answer.
b. The problem is a repetitive one already answered (search button)
c. They just don't have the time.
To compare the 500 forum to the S2, is comparing apples to oranges. GS2 users outnumber 500 users by probably >100-1, so it makes sense there are more users in that forum.
A lot of people put a lot of behind the scenes work getting mods, kernels, bootloaders, apps, etc working for the 500/501. Not to mention they do a lot of PM support that you just don't see.
So give some folks a break. Most questions here get answered.

This is normal behavior. Use of a third party launcher might clear this.

You can OC to 3ghz and the UI will always feel the same. OC has no effect on the UI, but only on games and some graphic intensive apps. You seem to misunderstand what OC does. The large benefit, is UV and some of the newer governors like lultzactive and savagedzen. These are designed to save battery without a performance loss. Also, depending on governor, benchmarks can actually decrease the more you run them. And benchmarks, are never to be trusted.

This is normal as the android system is obviously doing something it couldn't do when it was sleeping or turned off. The ghost icons are pretty normal, as I have them also. You can see which ones are the real files. No explanation for it, but I'm used to it. This is just how "windows" sees things. I would guess it's kernel/bootloader related, but if tht's the worse that happens, I can live with it.

If you only want benchmarks, and aren't interested in gaming or battery life, why bother OC? The primary reason to OC/UV is to save battery and have better GPU performance.

Disabling those, and others, is always a good start. Probably explains a lot of your problems. As with Dolphin and Youtube, good luck. Not much better browser, although Dolphin has a habit of just closing out.

I know that OC is not the key and Jelly bean is - but no harm in trying
Got a chance to test two Asus Terga 3 Tablets, both factory reset, one updated to JB & one on ICS.
Did the UI thing side to side and - woila !!! Project butter Shines )
I will post my developments in this thread, cause in a few days i will finish my engagements and will become free.

Naw, it's ok Mate.
Everybody thinks that OC is the way to go. But really, it only benefits games, some films, and battery (UV). The 50x series is pretty good about battery once you learn battery management with the help of a good UV kernel. (but hey, I like benchmarks also )
As with the momentary "stutter" when first going into the apps drawer, I can say this, get a third party launcher. Or, do some V6 Supercharge.
Also, as with my 701, under ICS 4.0.4 I had the same stutter. The JB update fixed it.

On other topic I finally flash my tab, and it was way easier than my s2 when i did it, everything was 1 click installation and Afterota helped a lot, thank you, ill be around.

Most of my UI thingies solved !!!!
Just installed the Nova launcher, meddled with the settings and UI is now as smooth as silk..
I noticed that every time i start up the tablet, every thing is laggy- even the audio.pop's
I found the reason for this- the governer, as soon as i change it to anything else, every thing becomes smooth...
If the interactive governer is set after changing it initially, it still remains smooth... one can just select anyother governer (lulzactive) and use set on boot option in cpu master it anyone else has the same problem..
I went for a clean up and messed it a bit
First installed a stock 3.1 from the thread mentioned in the earlier post... but turns out a non WW package does not update OTA if outside the Us (Australia), by this time messes the recovery, hence ended up installing cwm all over again ( thanks to Moscow Desires thread+latest frimware file ) and installed the latest stock 4.0.3 + apex launcher..

wow just had my galaxy S yesterday and it's been a day now, I must say that I'm in love with this OS which is very future proof than that zombie OS Symbian..
-This is my first touch screen and I'm having a hard time creating texts LOL
-I did a factory reset yesterday cause the previous owner still left some apps and I couldn't get into android market..
-BTW it has MIUI clock installed, does it mean it has been rooted? now I'm on the stock firmware froyo 2.2.1 JPY..
-How beneficial is it to upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.5? (I think this is the latest stock firmware available?)
-How about CM7.1? (BTW I read somewhere froyo has better battery life and less lags? i do hope i'm wrong)
-My palm is always sweaty, what could be a good back cover that could be used?
-Does the 1800mAh SGS2 battery fit directly into the Galaxy S without problems of fitting back the stock back cover?

Followed the same path, just a couple of weeks ago
My personnal advice is to take it one step at a time. I would suggest to flash last jvt stock rom, then learn to root it (I suggest semaphore kenrel, bu again, 100% personnal choice), learn to convert to ext4, mod your ui a little, you now, baby step, gigantic results

Hi and welcome. To answer your question on Froyo, yes, Froyo 2.2.1 has less lag and better gaming performance due to more free RAM. Froyo also loads videos faster. However, Gingerbread is faster in booting up, installing apps, and has several extra functions like improved text selection.
The incentive for choosing Froyo is that it is stable, fast, lag free and has longer battery life.
The incentive for choosing Gingerbread is that it has more support for new games and apps (some apps don't install on Froyo) and has more theming and modding options, like CRT off.
If you choose Froyo, I'd strongly recommend ZSJPK 2.2.1. It has about 170Mb of RAM on boot and even after a week's usage, with games and browsing, it is lagless.

Wow thank you so much for such a wonderful advice! BTW that ZSJPK 2.2.1, is it a CFW? I beleive I got the xxxJYP base and read somewhere this is the fastest in terms of (I forgot that field regarding this XXXXJPY base..)
A stupid noob question i'd like to ask- is there anyway to lock the screen aside from that power button? cause I don't wan't it to give up on me due to wear, and I discovered lock screen is useless, when I swipe to the left Its automatically changes to another homescreen..perhaps this was the bug samsung overlooked upon on froyo?
last one- how to install apps and games to external card without rooting?
BTW wheres the default file manager???

Hmm prolly I'll just stick now to stock firmwares first and if ever I need to be a SUPER USER (read somewhere) then the CM7 of CM9 ICS port next month =)

You can use widget to lock the screen, something like Switch Pro will do it.

No, ZSJPK is a stock rom. I've never tried xxxJPY before, but if you find it smooth and good, then there's no need to flash a different rom.
There are apps that can lock the screen by just pressing a shortcut or widget; just search the market for 'lock screen' or something along those lines.
You can use App2SD to move apps to the SD card. For some apps, you can go to Manage Applications under settings and move them to the external SD. For Gameloft games, you can search somewhere in these forums on how to move the sd files from internal sd to external sd.
The default file manager is File Manager. If you don't have it, the previous user might have deleted it, which means your phone might be rooted already.

Froyo 2.2.1 JPY (XEU) is the best rom I ever had (only updated via Kies). Unless you need the front camera in skype I'd stay in froyo, at least until the phone FC bug is solved for gingerbread roms (I'm on 2.3.5 now)
I would say if you want a modded ROM go to JVR and leave the jvs and jvt for a while there are still some problems there. But on the other side if you have flashing fever you don't care
Hmm i'm already now in cm7.1 and im proud to say I rooted and flashed it by myself, im playing catch up guys haha anyways yeah i was not satisfied with the 2.3.5 xxjvt cause of some issues that i forgot cause of cm7.1 lol so now im waiting for the ics port cause the nexus s owners got it already..
OT anyone tried the 1800 mah battery from sgs2?

Just to point out, if not mistaken there is no TV Out on CM7 or Miui.. you get in only on Samsung ROm.. btw XXJVT is great..look at some of the fine Custom ROm here in XDA.
Hello all, first post here after reading for quite some time
I researched alot and decided to buy this phone because I concluded it was the best, performance, quality, resolution, etc
I have the phone for a week now and I don't feel happy with it, overall I see the phone is not really smooth, it frequently freezes for like 2 seconds when opening or closing an application, I was quite happy until before I installed some apps, like modern combat 3 and aftermath xhd, I can't install those via market because it says it's not compatible with my device, so I tried them out because I was too curious to see its performance, and I'm very disappointed...
modern combat 3 is unplayable, the menu is laggy, the game feels like its constantly loading something, it's choppy, I played only half of the first level because I couldn't go on anymore. Aftermath XHD was laggy at first, but now I'm at the sniper level and I had to give up, it's unplayable, when a shot is fired it lags so much it stops for like 3 seconds. I read all over the internet that those games run smooth on defys, so what's the problem here?
I'm at stock rom and kernel (N7000UBKK1, 2.6.35.8-N7000UBKK3, GINGERBREAD.UBKK3), I'm not really into flashing, but after reading over the games thread people saying it's smooth and working fine I think it's my only hope, if it doesn't fix it I guess my hardware would be faulty then.
I'm starting to think that the internal disk is the bottleneck, and I'm not sure if updating can turn a non-playable game smooth, so has any of you guys ever experienced this or been through this, can give some advice or based on your experience point out if it is possible to solve this problem?

Hey, after using the Iphone 3gs since its release I must say Im impressed with both Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note BUT the random freezez and input lag that appears every now and then is just frekking annoying. Even with custom romz and different kernels this happens atleast 10 times everyday. As a techie guy I like the freedom that android gives me compared to the endless jailbreaking and ego behaviour by apple. However I'd say android devices must with the current hardware fix this type of problems since in the end user experience is the most important and If I spend 600 euros on a phone I'm sad to say that touchwise it still lacks a lot but after playing with it now for two weeks I have to say that I've gotten used to it. Samsung should stop pushing so many devices and focus on making the android software more stable, better touch input and reduce the frekking lag, dual core or not.

Yeah, the Note is not polished enough yet. But don't lose faith - it will get better once we get ICS, shouldn't be that long. Right now it's up to you - you can improve it noticeably by flashing, tweaking and overclocking. I did that and I don't look back it ain't perfect but good enough for me.
KL3 soft + Abyssnote 2.5 kernel + OC (1650) + either lulzactive governor and vr scheduler (very responsive OS) or ondemandx gevernor and sio scheduler (smoother 3D games). These are settings that do the trick for me.

If your game data is in your external SD Card, that may well be the problem
Anyhow, the Note is a niche device with a flavor of early adopting, since it's the first phone with this big a screen (the streak was a tablet, if I'm not mistaken?) and because it's one of the three first with a HD resolution.
What does that mean? That many things that work flawlessly on lesser devices won't work here simply by lack of dev support. One example? The gameloft games, my favorites. None of them are officially supported, and I haven't managed to make them work unofficially.
One thing is for sure: Android required flashing, period. The Defy is crap without any flashing, so is the Atrix, and now the Note is. At the very least, put on the CWM recovery, which takes about 60 seconds of your time, and try the custom Kernel that is swimming lonely down in dev section that allows you an OC of 1.7ghz. See if that helps with the lagging.

Don't worry with this kind of responses, you'll get them here sometimes. This is XDA, forum 100% dedicated to tinkering with phones so who cares what's compatibile with what. Make it work and enjoy.
This game is about 1.4GB if it has been installed on your internal memory you will definitely run out and and your phone will struggle,go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/Remove To SD card.

Hi everybody! I have some "newbie" questions about CyanogenMod 9...
1. Is it really faster compared to stock ICS? I haven't overclocked the processor and my main problem with ICS, is that the default launcher has a little stuttering some times and it's not absolutely smooth. In CyanogenMod9, the "Trebuchet" launcher is almost at the same level in terms of "movement flow".
I had Nova launcher previously and I'm thinking of installing it again on CyanogenMod 9...will this be a right move?
2. What else is better than the stock ICS there? Ι already use that marvelous power widget inside the notification bar, but, except some similar workflow tweaks, I can't see anything else...any feature list compared to the stock ICS 4.0.4?
3. Why the torch toggle-in-notification is disabled in settings? (the pre-installed torch seem to work perfectly)
4. Screen brightness gets increased when there is a lot of light around, but It doesn't decrease its brightness when I go in a dark room again...Am I doing something wrong? (I haven't touched those sensor filters etc...)

There is no right move. Do whatever it is you want. Your phone won't explode if you install the "wrong" launcher.
2. Take a look at the popular roms in the dev section and repeat #1. Or look at bedalus's benchmarks if you're really that apprehensive.

4. again, maybe a bug. After you flash a couple of roms I'm sure you'll see that you can get #3 and #4 working.

If you read carefully my post (sorry for my bad English), you will understand that I already have tried CM9 v6.0 and that was the reason I wanted to know more, because I don't see any performance improvement over stock ICS 4.0.4 on my Nexus S. Am I wrong? There must be some objective reasons except my judgement.
2. I was talking specifically about CM9 features.
3. I figured that with the torch...it's probably not ready yet. I can't find any post about the brightness though (there are so many options there which I don't fully understand and brightness never works as it should).
4. I don't want to flash other roms...I have already flashed Wildestpixel's roms and I didn't see an obvious performance difference too...
For trebuchet if you check (or unchecked I forget) the join with apps setting it makes the launcher just as smooth as gingerbread
Well, I switched from Bugless Beast today to latest CM9 nightly (15.4, not the KalimochoAz version posted on here).
Haven't tried CM9 for a while and it surprised me, speed wise and stuff integrated in it. I'm a fan of stockish ROM's, that's why I used BB since ICS came out. What made me stay is:
- integration of BLN & Voodoo sound, meaning I don't need to run those 2 apps in BG (saves memory ofcourse, I'm a sucker for optimization)
- BigMem is quite noticeable, also RAM free right after clean flash is about 200MB (vs 140MB on AOKP, which is the ****tiest, meaning when I use the apps I have in BG, there was constant launcher restart - low on RAM)
- seems like internal storage speed is faster, I noticed level loading on Where's my water game is perhaps the same as on GB (was waay slower when ICS came out)
- nice UI optional goodies in the ROM but still without AOKP "lets **** everything in" bloat (battery %, power key camera shutter, custom autobrightness levels, T9 dialer). Wanted those on BB, where they were out of question, since BB is more stockish.
- no weird governors, OC or voltages, just ondemand/cfq as on stock, don't use deep idle
So for me, it's a good sweet spot between stock and custom ROM.*
*Disclaimer:
I've used BB for months & AOKP for 2 weeks, both on SimpleKernel, which is basically stock with added BLN&Voodoo. I don't fiddle around with OC/Governors. Those are my observations and I don't intend to debate "why you didn't use "xxkernal v.9302".

Today, I'm trying out the 1200 OC, works completely stable so far, playing with the phone over half an hour now. 1400 rebooted after couple minutes. Try it out !
About brightness decrease, you need to enable it in extra auto-brightness settings at the bottom.

Thanks for the tip! Do you know what actually happens when "system update" detects an update? What is it actually after? An official post 4.0.4 update or a CyanogenMod update? Also, what happens in each situation? Can it be updated OTA?

Well I've tried most of the best out there and I think cm9 is far the smoothest rom out there. So stick with it. If you want to enhance ur experience with it then try pics reloaded I just love it.
Now the only thing left is search key mod foe recent apps to be modded with cm9 v6 cuz I tried the latest and it wipes out a lot of my options.

Screw benchmarks, usage experience counts and it's not measurable.
Agreed those who actually perform better in bench mark end up being a nuisances. If u want a daily driver stick with cm9 its glitch free.

I'm using CM9. Last rom I tried was AOKP build 32, but I went back to CM9.
My month with a factory unlocked Galaxy S2
Bought this in mint condition from a friend for about half price with only 1 hour of use, an unwanted upgrade. Came with 2.3.4 as expected, so hooked up to Kies; no update at the time. As is my wont, I used the phone for a few days to get to grips with TouchWiz (TW) and the phone generally. All quite reasonable, no stability issues and TW is not bad by any means.
My thoughts and trials so far then:
Hardware
Well made, light and thin. Slippery, so a black rubbery skin bought and fitted and I popped a spare 8GB microSD card in, not that the phone needs it for my purposes.
Only criticism is the OLED screen, I'm used to higher resolution (Moto and Sony) and 800x480 looks rather "cheapo" in terms of detail on a screen this large, but no deal breaker. What I do find somewhat at odds with the price of the phone is the slight but noticeable shading and colour tints across the screen at low brightness levels and on some backgrounds. Plus, the screen's legibility outside on a bright day is no better than more run of the mill LCD screens. (I mean cheaper!)
My first GB update
I generally root phones straight after flashing a new firmware version, if it isn't already. I had already successfully rooted the original stock 2.3.4 firmware with Zergrush 4 and debloated that ROM.
I was keen to try a later GB version before trying ICS, and I found 2.3.6 for "Open Europe" on Sammobile and downloaded it. I had already tried Kies, so the USB drivers were present and working. I uninstalled Kies on the PC but left the USB drivers alone. Kies and Odin are not good bedfellows. I did a full factory reset on the phone and erased everything, allowed it to reboot and then powered off, got in to download mode and flashed XXKL1 (which is an engineering version and deodexed it seems). Rooted it via Zergrush 4, deleted known bloat and renamed possible bloat to xxx.bak to clean the ROM for my own usage, and deleted that very annoying start-up sound. Downloaded all the apps I normally use (about 22 of them), including the excellent CPU Spy to check for deep sleep.
I used/charged the phone over the next couple of days to let the OS bed in. No problems encountered at all, and a very pleasing battery life of 30+ hours of light use, with syncing and GPS, 3G, WiFi always on and occasional BT. Magic! Only thing I did is change the Modem to LPR - the KI3 Modem that came with the ROM is not quite as good at holding weak signals. Only just though...
My first ICS update
So, good phone, stable and very usable ROM in 2.3.6. Time had come to try this new ICS thing. Downloaded the LPQ version and installed it, after a full wipe, via Odin. Not impressed by all the automatic installation rubbish at first boot... Rooted via a hot boot CWM and SU/Busybox successfully and did all the same debloating and app installation as GB 2.3.6. Spent some time getting orientated and used to the new menus and so on.
Over the next day or so, I let the ROM settle and began using the ROM - I changed the Modem to LPR as LPQ was not as good, perception wise. ROM was stable and usable, didn't really look or feel much different from 2.3.6 and was worse on battery - I would say 18 hours at best with the same usage pattern.
Absolutely hate the new Exchange thing for live.com email.... real pain usability wise and battery unfriendly.
My second ICS update
So, not overly impressed with LPQ, although it was usable, I decided to try LP7, the UK generic one. Went through the same process as above, and again swapped the Modem from LPS (awful!) to LPR.
No obvious differences at all. Battery life was as poor, but it was usable.
My first CM trial - CM9
So, somewhat disillusioned by Samsung's ICS implementation, I decide to look around for another "mature" ROM. CM9 fitted the bill (I have used CM6 before on another phone) and was smack bang up to date in terms of kernel, AOSP and G Apps. After my usual clean deck start, installed fine, 23/04 build.
At first, I was quite impressed as I could configure more and to my liking. The ROM was stable and I set the phone up with the usual Apps and deleted some useless stuff (like GenieWidget).
Swapped Modem out to LPR - bit of a theme going on here...
I liked the fact that the Spirit FM radio worked (so bought the Pro version as it is that good). The ROM is very usable and never got bogged down, BUT, for reasons I never fully determined, the battery life would start OK and then decline faster during the day. I never saw more than 12 hours life, again using as per my normal pattern and after a few days to settle. There appeared to be various background activities going on that were preventing deep sleep sometimes, but BBS was not really showing me what. Note that I only use BBS as a last resort as it can increase battery use...
No other real problems, but the soft key backlights wouldn't play with NoLED and were somewhat counter-intuitive. A bit trivial, but a mess.
My second CM trial - CM7
I like GB, it is mature and well understood, so CM7 RC 2 was therefore of some appeal. It had been developed over months and must therefore be fairly sorted. Surely.
Installed without issue on a cleaned platform as usual, including G Apps. Did the usual debloat and installed the usual Apps from the Market/Play, and some that were missing, like GMail. LPR modem was already there, Hooray! Spent rather longer fiddling with the settings in CM7 than CM9 since they were less obvious at first, to me anyway.
Switched off and put the phone on wall charge overnight and was rather shocked to find the phone was noticeably warm and displaying "Kernel Panic" in the morning. The phone had only charged by about 5% in total (to 64%). Worry Worry. I put the phone on USB charge until 100% without incident.
Started to use the phone as normal, the phone UI and operation was very good, fluid even. But, first problem I had was in the car. I paired BT fine, as usual, and made a phone call. After the call, I couldn't end the call on the car or phone - it had locked up. Oh dear.
Later, I tried the FM Radio during my daily walk - doesn't work, so why is it there? I tried Spirit FM - no way would it work. Oh dear.
The following day, I noticed that the battery life was amazing! I had never seen this phone sip juice like this. Deep sleep was always easily achieved. That was until the afternoon. I noticed that the battery level was declining at a much higher rate than earlier. I hadn't done anything different, so BBS was called in again. Nothing obvious shown but I kept seeing the GPS icon winking at me from the Notification bar, and continually. I always keep GPS on, but for some reason on this ROM, no GPS signal meant the ROM just kept trying. I played with various settings like Location etc. and managed to stop this odd behaviour, but this was too silly. I use a Smartphone for all the smart features. This wasn't very smart at all.
CM7 was my biggest disappointment of all the above ROM trials. It was the lightest and most promising, and yet the least reliable or functional. Which is a huge shame...
Today...
I'm now back on KL1 2.3.6, and it just works fine - day after day.
The future for me?
I would really like to use CM9 (or CM7 for that matter). They represent a number of ideals for me, including the open nature of development, the collaboration, a pioneering spirit and giving users a choice and a superb base to build on. I am no developer - I can split and modify kernels to a point, I can rehash ROMs with or without adb, I can amend frameworks. But little more.

Avoiding problems
Always data reset and wipe before doing anything major from one ROM to another, or follow the installation guide for any specific differences in approach.
Avoid Titanium Backup like the plague - it invariably leads to functional issues later if you cross flash. Use Google and/or airdroid for everything, it all just works. So many friends and other forums I contribute to have had too many backup issues to count. Go clean. Forget about Google paranoia.
ES File Explorer is very useful and recommended.
Don't bother "calibrating" the battery - it's an outdated practice and useless. Just use the phone normally, and anyone who claims the battery life is "great" 1 hour after flashing a newly announced ROM is a fool. Likewise NEVER fully discharge a Li-Ion battery. ICS ROM core LPQ to LP8 are largely all the same, just variants of the same thing for different markets. Some users believe they perform differently.
Custom kernels and ROMs are always work in progress and should be treated as such. Check out the number of revisions. Some kernel cookers are (welcome) enthusiastic amateurs that assume more is better and cram "fixes" in that the professional salaried software engineers have mysteriously missed. If you only need your stock kernel to be insecure, learn how to make it so. You are running Linux on your box, right?
Deodexing is not a means to improve performance, on the contrary.

And I totally agree. to all of it. Tried all iterations of almost all roms available. For some reason keep going to my VR 3.0 nandroid back up.
Except CM9, I don't really think there is any real development going on. Most are just cooked up roms OR stuff taken from the CM9 tree and implemented OR so called fixes that have actually broken something else OR just debloated rooted official firmware (that AFAIK is pretty easy to do with the fantastic dsixda's kitchen or on a rooted rom).
Now fanboy's may flame as much as they wish to, but seriously a stable CM9 (hopefully..!) or a VR 4.0 is all I am willing to wait for.
Till such time VR 3.0 it is.

I don't agree with your final thought. Different ics rooms have really different feels. E.g. Look at scrolling from lpq to lp7.....and there are numerous others as well. If u want more specific thoughts and feedback, just browse through different ics threads in this section..

Hmm... I have browsed through the sections, and tried various "revisions" or versions of Samsung ICS today while jotting this lot down, and my view, honestly, is there is no real difference. That isn't to say there isn't, I just can't see or feel it. I do accept that playing with 3 ROMs in a few hours is less than ideal. And a drag!
I suppose if someone could deconstruct the ROMs properly and thoroughly...

May be subjective, but for me the GB stock browser, camera and dialler are streets ahead of what the rest can offer. Scrolling is smoother too. And I like/need a radio.

Seems like you and the OP only tried the AOSP/AOKP roms? Give the roms based on the latest official a try.
The dialer is still as good as always (unchanged), camera is actually improved with higher bitrate recording and the ics stock browser...is untouchable at the moment in my opinion. (Granted I use "ICS Browser+" from the market which uses the best ui in a browser I've encountered)
I currently use Dynamic's ICS rom and it would be extremely difficult for me to go back to GB at this point.

While I agree that in terms of loading websites, ics default browser is a little bit faster, scrolling and pinch and zooming is much smoother with stock gb browser. Also the dialer is worse on ics as it has removed the contacts section which means I have to put both the dialer and contacts shortcut on the dock.
I'm using Wanamlite v11.1, Siyahkernel v3.1, and Apex Launcher.
A winning combination in my opinion, that is now at least as good as the best GB ROMs in terms of battery life. 7 hours standby with 30 minutes screen time and i'm still on 87%.
In terms of fluidity and performance I think ICS /w Apex beats GB handsdown.
Thanks for the recommendation, but I avoid ROM mix ups, I can do that myself. The ones I have looked at have had some very dubious scripts and additions. I usually look at build.prop first, and generally find all sorts of hybrid attempts at adding stuff that is completely wrong. Lines taken from websites, other phones and so on.

Depends, it was like you say in Gingerbread days, not with ICS WanamLite nor Dynamic, only tried these + CM9
I am using Dynamic 1.4 LP9, it is as smooth and fast as CM9, but everything working because it is Samsung based
I tried the included NEAK and Speedmod kernels, similar performance and very good battery life, only 3% drain overnight, I dont play with processor tweaking

Dialer is laggy if you compare it with GB. CM9 variants have slightly more response dialers but overall, GB dialer is way more responsive. There is a small but noticeable lag when pressing a key and the time it takes to register on ICS (CM9 & stock).

Browser is a definitive improvement yes, and the desktop mode is welcome but browser mods have been available on GB since long.
It is not that ICS is bad. It is actually very good, but the way it has been implemented on S2 is downright ridiculous...! And not one stable vanilla build isn't really helping..

This is something I have been contemplating for quite some time now, quite possibly the last month. The only real thing stopping me is that for some reason alot of games (eg dead space and modern combat 3) don't seem to like it when i change roms, and even though all the ingame data is there, sometimes it decides I have to re-download.
I do miss it alot though.. and also red pill kernel
I might end up doing a backup of current my CM9 and take the plunge sometime soon. I've been using CM9 since around feb and lately I think my interest has plateaued and now I'm just beginning to get frustrated with little lags that are popping up more frequently (probably due for a wipe mind you!). The only thing about villiam rom is the bloody touch wiz launcher.. I just don't like messing with the launcher roms were made for either.

Mass lols to be had at the fact that a majority of the time they would be played on the device through the mono loudspeaker too
I also go back for GB..becoz i feel that ics so laggy at dialer,and PES2012 freeze and cant play on ics..but in GB all working great..

Except CM9, I don't really think there is any real development going on. Most are just cooked up roms OR stuff taken from the CM9 tree and implemented OR so called fixes that have actually broken something else OR just debloated rooted official firmware (that AFAIK is pretty easy to do with the fantastic dsixda's kitchen or on a rooted rom).
Now fanboy's may flame as much as they wish to, but seriously a stable CM9 (hopefully..!) or a VR 4.0 is all I am willing to wait for.

Currently trying ninphetamine kernel (as per VR3 - thanks for the heads up) on my fave stock KL1 more for interest than anything. Seems OK, no obvious difference from stock running as is apart from it being insecure, need a couple of days to evaluate in real life use.
Bloody good post. I've been using CM9 since the video recording bug was solved, and thats probably the longest I've used any ROM on the SGS2, I really like AOSP but the problem is it does still have quite a few bugs, and isn't quite as fast or as battery friendly as I remember the likes of Hyperdroid v6 being.
This makes me tempted to go back to GB. For me, it is still the ultimate for a daily driver. But I'm lazy so I'll probably stick with CM9.

ICS dialer laggy , doesn't happen to me on stock LP9 or Dynamic based on LP9 and CM9 is as smooth as they come. Whilst mono audio is fine for you I quite like having stereo audio. Choice, not limitations my friend

Cheers for that - I would definitely recommend the 2.3.6 KL1 off Sammobile if you want a solid GB.
Dude, if you have not tried CheckRom RevoHD V6, then you have not tried the BEST gingerbread rom for sgs2.
This is why I can not use ICS (yet). Checkrom is just too perfect of a Rom.
Try it, tweak it to your liking, use it for a week or 3 then try and go back to stock.

Should I root and unlock, install kernel, overclock etc?
I use it for:
-Emails (Business & personal)
-Web browsing (a lot)
-Some games (but simple ones)
-Viewing and editing (slightly) Images.
-Google Analytics/Ads/Drive
-CRM database etc
In addition to the above question, I want to now if overclocking to 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6 ghz or install would make the N7 smoother and faster for these general things? I wont be 'gaming' or doing anything massively graphics or processor intensive (I dont think?)

Based on your uses I'd leave it stock...you could however install a custom kernel and squeeze some more battery life out of it.

Ok thanks, I have thought about battery life however I am willing to sacrifice a little battery for more speed. Do you think you'd notice the difference? In terms of smoothness and speed on general activities? Also one BIG question(s), how hard it is and how risky is it to root from Mac? Whats the likelihood of me ruining my device, for good? Are we saying 1 in 1000 or for a rookie like me a toss of a coin?
I have watched a few videos and find it pretty amazing what you can do to a phone or tablet. Especially by yourself.

Based on your needs... I would say... stay stock, but root...
You can then run apps like Titanium (always useful for backing up those Temple Run 2 high scores.. or running AdAway (for getting rid of those pesky, annoying ads that seem to crop up just about everywhere...)
As far as risk is concerned... well, it's not really quantifiable... there is ALWAYS the possibility you might hard-brick the thing... but then, you might drop it on the kitchen floor tomorrow!
I'd be a liar if I said the Nexus 7 was 'unbrickable' ... it is eminently 'brickable'! But it's actually kind of hard to do! And if you follow many of the excellent instructions here on XDA, you should be OK. (Actually, rooting is a piece of cake - people make too much of it.)
Finally... rooting involves unlocking the BOOTLOADER... which WIPES the device and performs a FACTORY RESET... so I would suggest it might be done sooner rather than later... before you build up a lot of content on it (not that it can't be backed up elsewhere beforehand).
Once you have root, you can then think about custom ROMs and kernels much later.
But root is you're gateway.

Doesn't sound like you really need to root. If you get sick of the interface or whatever you can always install a launcher like Nova Prime and play around with it. The things you can do without being rooted is pretty amazing.
Overclocking it to 1.4 Ghz won't make a huge difference, but overclocking to 1.8 Ghz will. It will also drain your battery a lot faster - something to think about. I'm one of the under clockers to preserve battery.

You have probably answered my question, I am a bit scared to overclock past 1.4 or 1.5 due to the heat and me not really knowing what I am doing and as the battery life is fairly important I might just leave as stock.
However like a few people advise I may try to give the rooting a go.... or maybe find a cheap used tablet or handset and try it on that first?
Would be great to get rid of the adverts.

Well because the device is a Nexus device, it comes very clean as default. Not really any junk on the device to slow it down, even though that "junk" is relative. For example, I live in Europe and Google Play Music does not work over here, so I've disabled it. I've also disabled Google Currents, and any other built in apps that I simply do not use. Now it's like those apps are not even on my device - they are just dead.
If we were talking about a Samsung tablet, then yes I would say root it. Because rooting would allow you to get rid of Samsung's Touchwiz interface, which can be a bit of a RAM hog. But the Nexus 7 doesn't have such a problem, it's already stock and very smooth.
I can tell that you're very interested in this stuff and you will most probably root in the near future. However, my advice to you would be to just use and enjoy the device as it is right now, but in the mean time just read about how to unlock bootloaders, rooting, custom ROM's.. read as much as you can. You'll get more familiar with the process and the terminology, and it will be a big help when it comes time to root two months down the line.
One custom ROM I can recommend is Paranoid Android. Truthfully, it's the only one I can recommend because its the only one I've flashed. I like it, but does it make a huge difference from stock in terms of speed? Not really. It has a load of other cool features, though.
If all you're interested in is battery life and performance, rooting and a custom kernel would suffice. However for what you say you'll be using it for, not really needed. The nexus line is super simple to root and play around on though. It all sounds way more complicated than it really is.

Quite impressed that you can determine this, as its 100% correct. I am probably going to do this at some point, but maybe not just yet, I think I need to get comfortable with the process and research a bit more about it all. Also, I am actually very impressed with the Nexus 7 as it id and coming from an Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3, I can safely say that I'd not go back to either after this. I used to think Apple had it all in terms of functionality and innovation, however in recent years they have almost made backwards steps.
But thanks for the response, I keep seeing the Paranoid ROM around and on signatures. So may give that a go.

I wouldnt root it for the uses you are indicating, BUT from your post I can already see that you eventually will. My advise is set a saturday or friday night aside and get this done sooner than later. Its just easier because this device not having an SD card will make it difficult to restore data and things that you have already done on it ( I got it two days ago and still havent rooted but am already worreid about some of the work ). The thing that usually helps me the most is youtube. Read a lot but have a good comprehensive detailed youtube video of teh rooting method you decide to follow and just follow along with the video. I have rooted 3 phones using that method and have yet to brick anything.
