Sony Playstation Nexus Phone coming! - Xperia Play General

http://news.yahoo.com/leaks-suggest-playstation-nexus-phone-way-165700862.html
Here's a blurb:
This May, a report by Amir Efrati in the Wall Street Journal said that Google would be partnering with multiple different manufacturers at the same time for its next wave of Nexus devices. More recently, a leak reported by the Japanese-language site Android Noodles listed three different Nexus devices that were slated to be released soon, including a Sony Xperia Nexus. And with the recent release of the PlayStation Mobile marketplace on Sony Xperia phones, two of the biggest brands in tech might be about to collide.
If Nexus smartphones are "pure Android," how could it be a PlayStation phone?
A "regular source" to the Android and Me blog says that upcoming Nexus devices will allow manufacturer customizations, so long as they're put in a separate place and made optional.
In this case, the PlayStation Mobile store isn't preloaded on any devices right now, the way that its precursor and other gaming features were baked into the Xperia Play (and the way carriers usually pack bloatware onto non-Nexus phones). Instead, owners of Xperia phones have to visit a Sony website to download the store. So an Xperia Nexus may be able to use PlayStation Mobile without breaking Google's pure out-of-the-box Android experience.

Very excited!

Dear god I hope this is true.
If Sony releases a Nexus device for US carriers, I'd buy it without a doubt.

It is an interesting development. I do like this push in Nexus development to bring more pure Android experiences and encourage manufacturers to make their pieces more optional.
I'll be more excited if we actually hear about a new Playstation-certified phone with gaming controls, though (EDIT: Note that the above article gives no indication of whether or not an Xperia Nexus would have integrated game controls). I'm hoping Sony is just waiting to find the right time when they have everything ready (Hopefully by the time my 2-year contract expires next Fall). Being the only phone with gaming controls gives us a bit of anti-fragmentation in that regard - developers who target us aren't targeting a slew of devices.
Meanwhile more and more devices are coming out Playstation-certified without gaming controls - even the HTC One X, which I think it is cool to see happen on another brand. I just hope this trend doesn't mean there won't ever be another phone with integrated game controls... 'cause beefier hardware would be nice at some point.

If its a Nexus, im pretty sure it would have Galaxy S3 rivaling or even beating specs..

Doubt it'd have a gamepad. I don't think a nexus device would be aimed at gamers.

LG Optimus G Nexus interests me more...

No gamepad no party. :silly:

Sorry guys but the next nexus (by lg) will be similar to the optimus g but dual core and 2gb of ram, no gamepad.

5 nexus devices from various manufacturers are rumored to be released next month, actually.

5?? All probably with no gamepad, so... Meh.. :banghead: Why exactly the manufacturer aren't interested in gaming device?? Coz they all corporate leaders & not gamerz?? Is that it?? They only use thier phone to simplify thier job?? Meh..

Guess there just isn't a big market for it yet, and rumors about Android 4.2 are saying that it will have a center where OEMs can make their skinned ROMs available while the user can update their phone with the pure Android versions whenever they want. So, different manufacturers are gonna have their own Nexus devices. You can google Android 4.2 and read up on the rumors, allegedly from a source known to be reliable.

What gives you even the most remote idea that it'd be dual core? Name one source. One. Seriously. Bet you can't.
Quad core Qualcomm Krait is LTE capable, and LTE compatibility was the only reason we didn't get quad core phones sooner

If it doesn't work out at least the Xperia Play is still going strong; no I'm not being sarcastic either: FPSe touch-pad support, Playstation Mobile, high-profile games like the Bard's Tale, support from great dev's like Hyper Dev Box. If everyone stopped supporting the Play in unison I'd still have years worth of gaming left on the device.

2ghz Gingerbread 3.0 hitting market next month?

**WARNING** If you happen to be one of the few satisified X10 customer who are happy with your device and wouldn't change a thing, you may want to stop reading now.
For the rest of us it is really time to start getting excited; not about the X10. Unless of course you are stuck in one of those 3 year Rogers contracts. But for Gingerbread!
Xmas 2010 is looking bright, very bright.
Gingerbread 3.0 is expected to be released in time for the season of giving. Possibly as early as three weeks from now. So hopefully each of us will have a little extra budget to pick out the gifts that we will be giving our favorite person for Xmas; ouselves So the question for us X10 users is would you trade your X10 in for this?
Strong rumers are starting to spread about what these 3.0 devices will offer under the hood:
Things like:
2ghz, 1280x760 resolution that will put iphone to shame, minimum 4" displays, 1020p hd, no third party UI, micro sdXc with a minimum 64gb, webM with VP8 video codec, and much more...
It is possible the first two out might be the new SE psp2 slider, and the Samsung Galaxy s2.The new devices still wont cook your breakfast, but they will do just about everything else.
Maybe they will look like one of the devices below.

Nice. How about pre-ordering this beauty and putting it on ebay immediately, just because next summer new quad core 3GHz HD 3D HTC device comes loaded with Android 3.5?

Pretty sure there would be more buzz if gingerbread was around the corner. I don't think there would be that much demand for a psp phone. Sure its cool but how many people need a phone that plays console-like games?

I would have thought Google would time the announcement of Gingerbread to compete with the launch of WP7... let's see what happens
And psp I think was a pretty big success...
according to wiki the console is "the most successful non-Nintendo handheld game system ever sold"
Actually, LOL nvm what I said above
PSP is the highest selling console, week in and week out in Japan, for the past two years.

no, SE's motivating us into buying their opponents next device.
If you think that SE is alone in doing something like this, you're the most naive person on earth.
Just look at HTC and the Desire. A few months after release, they re-release it with a better screen, then a month after that, announce a new phone with everything people wanted from the first model.
Look at Nintendo... they just keep releasing the same system with a different config every few years.
It's called business.

Thinking of buying Galaxy Tab

Heyy,
Im a huggeee android fan n was looking forward to getting an android tablet next month...before buyin i wanted to ask some questions regarding the tablet.
1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
Thanksss

Then I'd say wait it out.
If you're a huge Android fan you'd already have a Tab!
My advise is, if you can wait, wait. Personally, i've been waiting a long time for a decent Android tablet - I even bought a cheap chinese iRobot, and had a Huawei S7 on preorder (cancelled when the shipping date kept slipping).
So far, the Tab has exceeded my expectations for an Android tablet, given that the OS is supposedly "not optimized" for tablets, which is a phrase that many reviews have used, but few (if any) have actually demonstrated due to incredibly lazy journalism.

Dave

Indeed! Just look at the comments in most of the reviews, and this invariably crops up time and time again from people who haven't even tried the Tab!
When an iPad displays an iPhone app in a "window", it's a feature of the OS that allows the tablet to take advantage of the iPhone ecosystem, yet when the Tab does the same for Android apps it's because the OS is "not optimized" for tablets.
Got to love those reviews that say that Android doesn't support the Tab's native resolution, when in actuality it supports any resolution and a well-coded app can take advantage of it. All because it's not an "official" Market resolution, which Google could "fix" by just saying that it is so!
Regards,
Dave

Thanks for the help guys....i know the OS its not optimized for the device but will it support gingerbread and honeycomb or the processor is too weak for that?

Heyy,

1. Will it get honeycomb update? Is the hardware powerful or outdated to the dual core chips?
The 1ghz Hummingbird and PowerVR 540GX GPU is the most powerful single core SOC on the market right now, and it's arguably competive or superior to the Tegra 2 in graphics performance as well. It can handle 2.3 just fine, and should be good for 2.4 or whatever version number Honeycomb gets as well. Nobody can answer if Samsung will support it, but the community should have all the tools to do so as well.
2. How is the video calling on it? Which software can i use for Video chatting on PC and tablet?
Video calling is ok to good, same as any mobile device, but with BIGGER FACES. Qik, Tango, Fring and Skype are your current choices for software. All work best on WiFi, obviously
3. Is there any other alternative tablet better than this? Is it gonna be outdated in a few months due to the hardware??
There's no REAL alternative at the moment. There's a lot of lesser alternatives (no phone, no GPS, lower quality materials, lower resolution, etc), but nothing better in this form factor. In the mobile electronics world, there's always something better coming.
4. Can I put custom Roms in it? Or its not possible?
In time, you can, because Samsung didn't lock the bootloader and they've released the source code for all the shipping variants. Just keepin mind that no Android device has custom ROM support right out of the gate, not even the vaunted Nexus One. It takes time, multiplied by sales. I should also mention that the Tab has sold nearly as many units as the Nexus One, if the reports are accurate.

As for saying the arc will be outdated, that is pretty simplistic mate. It will only be considered outdated by a small minority of power users, if it does what you need it to then specs mean little.

A new version of XPlay?

It seems SE will launch a new PS Certified phone, the successor of Xperia Play.
Phone sizes keep creeping up, to the point where I worry using a 10.1-inch tablet will soon become the norm. If rumors are correct, Sony Ericsson's thinking big with their first glasses-free 3D phone—a possible PlayStation phone, perhaps?
Word on the street is Sony Ericsson wants a slice of the 3D pie that HTC and LG have both already cut, however negative the reviews may've been for the EVO 3D and Thrill 4G. Supposedly this phone they're working on with a 4.7-inch screen has a mega resolution of 1280 x 720, which in my eyes would make it perfectly placed for a follow-up PlayStation gaming phone to the Xperia Play.

Just a thought maybe this is the nexus prime?! 720p display check, huge ass screen for a phone check. I'm sure this will use dual core so thats another check. Make's sense for this to have ice cream sandwhich since it has that big ass screen. Nexus prime doesnt use any buttons, so 4.7 isnt that bad when you can make room since no buttons.
I can see why they would release it early. The new nexus comes out in november

LOL, your comparing a mid range android phone that plays mobile games to a state of the art dedicated handheld that will make the Play look like a Sega Game Gear?
Okay then lol......
Vita will have Uncharted, Resistance, Call Of Duty, Mod Nation Racers, Little Big Planet, Wipeout, PSN etc from day one and have graphics nearing the 360 and ps3 on a handheld.
I'm currently looking to pre order my Vita, the Play will do me until the Vita releases, i'll then get rid and have a "normal android or ios phone" and a dedicated gaming device (Vita) as the two don't mix too well at all in one device as seen with the Play lol.
And many people agree judging by the terrible sales of the Play and the poor reviews from across the board.......
Don't see what everyone is complaining about.
fk 3d phones and why do people need dual core. Do you often find yourself using 100% processing all the time.
3D has to be the biggest gimmicks out there at the moment and not to mention it's lack of clarity.
The problem i find here is that most people are whining about a phone that has been out less than 6 months and for some regions on 1 month.
For most regions it came on 2.3.3 and an update for 2.3.4 is out in September not to mention the recent software update that has already made the phone better in some features.
People here obviously lack patience and if you are constantly looking at what is coming out next then you will always be disappointed with any of your purchases.
Here's an idea... if you don't buy anything ever you will never be disappointed.
You made your bed now sleep in it or trade in your phone or something.
I love my play and am perfectly satisfied at the time between updates. If you like your play you will tell people about it rather than complaining about it and turning of people from buying it which then leads to companies not supporting it due to the low sales.

I agree whole heartedly! Love my play, only real issue is devs not making decent enough games for it - bit of a chicken egg scenario, devs wont make games as not enough ppl have bought the phone, ppl wont buy as not enough devs making decent games for it...
Don't matter tho, FPSE and the xoid family gives you all you need
Back on topic - I would love there to be more ps certified devices, and cross manufacturer, I want a dual screen device, with the second screen displaying a game pad or a keyboard at all times depending what I am doing!
i hate touch screen controls so until there are more phones with gamepads PS certified phones don't really interest me unless they are the next gen Xperia Plays.
pretty much all SE devices from now on will be PlayStation certified.

[OFF] The Best Processor For Mobile of All Time

The best mobile processor ever made to date is the Snapdragon S4. Even Dual COre it beat the Quadcore Tegra 3.

For while, the SnapDragon S4 is the king...
I'll confess something. I've had so far only two androids, a Galaxy S and the Xperia Play (which by the way, is in service center).
I think the Sony invests more in your consumers than the Samsung. I see guys upset (so far) by the slowness of the ICS on Xperia play, but look the other way, Samsung won't officially launch the ICS for the Galaxy S. Think Sony strives to provide the best for their Android phones.
The accessories by Sony are also good .. I have the Livesound, the DK300 dock for Xperia Play and ordered the SMartwatch on ebay...
I'm happy with Sony, and I haven't plans to change..
