Anyone else get odd behavior when both volume buttons held down simultaneously? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Pressing both volume buttons on my N7 at the same time seems to peg the CPU causing really bad performance for about a minute. A little later on, a blank email pops up with a screenshot and system dump attached. The email has no to address.
I also get a bunch of notifications from superuser that Shell has been denied root.
Does anyone else see this? Trying to figure out if it's a CM issue or a JB issue or what. Any help appreciated.

Just tried this and it does the same for me.

Mine does nothing...
I'm stock

Seems like some debug feature built into the rom then.

Does the same on a stock (rooted) HTC Sensation running ICS. I get a vibration, then the CPU lags for around 2 minutes, then I get 2/3 short vibrations.
Some people think it's CM related, it isn't, I haven't had CM anywhere near this phone.

It is dev feature. It is creating a log which can be found in a folder on the sdcard
Can't remember exactly what It's called now but it's the same on the one x

Just had a look through the developer options, can't see anything for generating a log. Would be useful if you could find out what it was called.
I was otherwise unable to reproduce (no log on my SD card either, in-case it's an "always on feature), however I did just install the updated drivers.

It won't be in dev options, the Nexus S has something similar to this, that pressing a key while booting will activate this logging thing and can't be turned off, that's what this sounds like to me

Security Flaw in our phones

Hi!
I just noticed that when the screen is locked and you double tap the home butten, the voice control will start. Then you are able to just go to your homescreen. Is this happening on your sgs2's too?
Found it on Villain Rom 1.1

Why does everyone have to put FIVE ALARM FIRE!!! titles in their not so significant posts. If the phone doesn't have lock enabled this is a convenience feature not a security problem.

Then friggin turn off Voice Talk so its not running in the background and turn it back on when you need it. If you need more help, post in Villian's thread in the development forum. No offense, but this isn't front page news.

I mean seriously, do you even read any of the posts before replying?
1) OP said he's running a Villain ROM which means he's rooted and modded.
2) Another poster running Villain can't replicate the problem.
3) No one other than the OP (and I'm assuming even you) can replicate the problem.
4) Who knows what the OP might be running app wise that might be triggering the issue on his phone.
I know I'm not a mod but these little "crisis" posts that start out as embers end up being raging fires. Maybe its because of all the different languages spoken. By all means, if anyone running a stock ROM can replicate this report back. It would indeed then be an issue worthy of the front page and the title "Security Flaw in our phones."
Just to add - I'm using litening 1.1, and I have an enforced exchange PIN.
Double clicking the home button will not get past the password entry screen.
Believe me, I've tried all ROMs and various apps to get around the password, still haven't found one yet.

Need help with daughters phone please

Don't come on this section much, I'm a captivate guy. But my daughter has a completely stock desire z on bells network.
What is happening with her phone is regularly she will have to do a reboot, or sometimes even a battery pull because she will add some songs, or pictures and sometimes even SMS messages and she knows they're there but they won't show until the reboot. In the case of gosms, she gets the notification icon on the display up top, and when she clicks it, the messaging app is empty, until the reboot?! The songs and pics are the same thing, she knows they're there, and they show, but not until a reboot. Hope i've given enough details. As I said, stock rom, everything. Thanks in advance.

It's probably an effect of a known bug with refreshing cache for files on SD card. Try running this instead of reboot:
SDRescan

Though not sure what the heck is going on with her messaging... First time I hear about that. Maybe corrupted internal memory card?

[Q] some noob questions

Hello,
i'm new to Android and the Nexus 4 is my first Android device. I'm really happy with it but i've got some questions which i'm sure are pretty easy to answer for most people here:
- I turned off the vibration (touch feedback) in the settings, but in some apps it's still there, for example when i type in a URL in chrome. how do i disable it?
- I came from an iPhone and i'm used to having an app for notes. Is there any good, simple app for android, where you can just write down some notes, similar to the iphone app?
- I've heard of a great app to use in case you lose your phone or someone steals it, so you can track it down from your pc, take photos etc, but i forgot its name. Does anyone know?
- Is it normal that the Nexus 4 camera sometimes keeps trying to focus on something? it happened to me sometimes that it focused, the image got sharp, then suddenly it loses the focus again, focuses again, loses it again, and so on, even though i was not moving the phone (holding it in my hand though).
Thanks for your help!

Ok, I Don't Have A N4, But I Can Help. For The Type Vibration, You Might Have To Go Into The Keyboard Settings And Look For It There. I Think It's Set Apart From The Other Feedback Option.
I Use ColorNote & EverNote. ColorNote, As The Name Implies, Has All These Color Options You Can Use, And Separate Your Notes By Color. (Red for thoughts, green for to-do stuff, and so on) I Like EverNote Because It Automatically Saves Your Notes Online.
I Think You're Referring To The Lookout Mobile Security App. I Have It On Both Of My Phones.
Once Again, Not A Nexus Owner, So I Can't Help With Your Camera Issue. Sorry. :/
All The Apps Suggested Are Free. (Lookout has Premium features that you have to pay for, I think by the month)
I Hope I've Helped.

I have come from an iPhone too, although this is not my first Android. For the keyboard vibration, you have to turn it off on the keyboard's settings, as the guy above me said.
For the notes, I use this. It's a simple but great and useful application.

Another thing i don't fully understand:
On the top left of the screen (on the bar), i see Skype, which makes sense, since Skype is open in the background, so i won't miss a call or message or whatever. But then why is there no symbol for What's app or facebook? Don't they work the same? Basically, there also needs to be some kind of background process open for these, right? But why are they not shown on the top left of the bar?

That's the choice of the application's developer not to have the icon in the status bar. I find it better not to have any icon in the status bar as they take up space and look ugly.

While we're at it, another question
How do you actually CLOSE an app? So it's not in the RAM anymore. I'd imagine that all those apps still running in the background use a lot of battery, right?
Just use the third soft button at the button of the screen then close the apps from there. As for background processes, you need not to worry about then. Android is good at handling background processes so they don't take a lot of battery.

Isn't this just a list of "recently opened" apps? Because if you swipe them off there, these apps are still shown as "Active" in the settings menu.
Nope, you close them from there. Although some may have a background process like Facebook so you can still receive notifications with the app closed. It takes up minimal battery.

For this scenario Cerberus has a feature where you dial a unique code to access the hidden program but you've probably not noted it. If you haven't changed it, dial

Or to remove you could also go to Settings / Security / Device Administrator and uncheck it then Settings / Apps and uninstall the app.

Missing app icons on homescreen after reboot, Nexus 7 2013 wifi (also can't enable AR

I am using a 2013 Nexus 7 wifi and am using GEL, about a week ago I rebooted the device and about half of my apps were missing from the home screen. I got them all set back up and tried another reboot and every time I reboot I lose my app on the bottom right side of the screen, I think it's a GEL issue because I used Nova and tried it and my apps were intact after a reboot, but I was wondering if anyone else using GEL has experienced this? I would like to keep using that launcher because I like it, maybe there is an updated version. One more question, whenever I attempt to enable ART runtime I get the dialog to confirm the switch to ART but when I confirm my device reboots but only a normal reboot, it doesn't do anything else, and I go back into developer options and it is still on dalvik. Has anyone experienced this issue as well? Any help is greatly appreciated.

For launcher problem i never had any apps missing issue (ever) and about art ur rom might not have it. Again not enough information to go with.

Same issue with my Nexus 7 2013 WiFi. After restart, the app at the bottom right corner is removed from home screen. I'm on GEL as well.

If you switch between launchers you have a very strong chance of having your icons and widgets vanish - it's a different programme with different settings. Sometimes you may get lucky and somebody has set things up to import, but you may as well be hoping for a gmail account to have all of your messages from hotmail.
With regards to ART, you'll simply not have the option with stock. You may do with a custom ROM, but there are various things that will prevent the switch (particularly xposed,) and it's probably best not to use it yet anyway unless you have a particular love of reading log files and waiting twenty minutes after updating a nightly. Don't get me wrong, I actually do like going through a log, and only do updates while I brew my morning coffee, but it's probably not worth the occasional horrors for daily use yet.
Has anyone come-on with a reason or solution for this yet? Same thing happens to my Nexus 7 (2012) on both CM11 and AOKP 4.4.2 with GEL Launcher. Any app I put in the bottom right corner will disappear after reboot.

As I remember it comes as a part of the kernel for those devices including LG G2, since there aren't any custom kernels out for these devices yet I highly doubt that's a possibility right now.
you can opt for proximity actions for locking and unlocking, although it would drain your battery a bit.
I'm using Wakeup Touch Nexus which is available in Google Play for free. Dint notice any battery drainage. Very nice app. If anyone got better app can suggest me too...

Pretty much every major OEM like Sony, HTC, LG and even Chinese manufacturers like OPPO , Xiaomi etc have implemented double tap to wake on their large screen phones and I really don't know what's stopping Samsung to implement in spite of so many Note generations .
Only way to properly implement this is using a custom kernel for the device
Tap Tap App @ Play Store
Tap Tap App works for me. Galaxy Note 4.
Requires configuration.
Lost functionality, how to get it back?

OK, I've got a VKWorld VK6050S (note the S). This will be a long story, but I feel I must post many details. Otherwise, there will be that smart-*** posting "but you can't do that!!!"
Had the phone for several weeks now. Took a LONG time to set it up and get it running EXACTLY the way I wanted it to. As part of that process, I installed Nova launcher, and an app called "DTSO". Anyway, when it was all set up.... I could double-tap the home screen to lock, and the display would go black. Then, *without using the proximity sensor*, I could double-tap the middle of the BLACK screen, which would cause the display to wake up and display the lock screen. I didn't set a lock on this screen, so I could just swipe up to clear it. Note I could double-tap the BLACK screen to wake it up.
So I was happy with the way everything was set up. Only problem was, it was not stable. Most of the time, if you tried to take a picture, the phone would freeze. (forever). Or sometimes a reboot would take HOURS (starting after the animated vkworld logo displayed) I tried several suggestions. It was not a bad memory card, and it was not corrupted files on a memory card. I tried clearing various caches, etc. Nothing worked. Finally, in desperation...I went to the factory boot menu (chinese, but I found a guide for it) and cleared hardware cache / emmc / whatever. That left me with *** CHINESE LOLLIPOP ***, and all my apps/settings/data were GONE...
(sigh)
So I had to start from figuring out how to switch back to English. And then starting all over again. I wasn't back to "zero". I went back to "minus one". (!!!!)
After many hours setting up the phone again with dozens of applications, getting my account settings input, getting it all configured...
The only thing I can NOT do now is to double-tap the black screen to wake it up. The phone is rock-solid STABLE now, so that is an improvement. But I want it to wake the screen with a double-tap, like it did before!!!
I'm now using "Go" launcher. But I (temporarily) tried "Nova" launcher, like I had it before. DTSO does not work like it used to. It won't wake up the screen while black. Again, this USED TO WORK, so it's not a hardware issue. What did I do wrong? What did I miss in setting this thing up again?
