[Q] Micro SD and Class (and stuffs)? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry but i didnt find a topic about this on NEXUS 7 forum.
A few questions:
1 - Anyone knows if N7 can support all sizes of microSD? (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128..so on)
2 - What the lowest CLASS do i need to play videos without problem?
3 - What the lowest CLASS do i need to play GAMES without problem? (using life02 thread
4 - What about battery consume when using the MicroSD/OTG?
5 - I will post some links and you guys tell me which one should be better or trustble
Option 1 Samsung 32GB Class10
Option 2 Sandisk 32GB Class10
Option 3 Patriot 32GB Class 10
I dont have much money so the first option will always be the best one (Unless some1 tell to forget about)
Thanks You all (Sry bad spelling and gramatic)

The Nexus 7 does NOT have a microSD slot. No expandable memory at all.
EDIT- Oops you mean for OTG? In my experience anything Class 6 or above is fine, Amazon has a class 10 16GB for a good price.

I personally would not use a class 10 for anything other than movies, music, and pictures. They are awful at small random IO.

No, it will not work with ANY SD card.
There is no Micro SD slot.

I believe the OP knows that, I think they are looking for a microSD to use with a card reader.

Ah, way to make myself look stupid. I wanted to make sure he didn't glance over the posts, since it seemed he only focussed on the speed issue.
And it turns out, I glanced over the OP's post too quickly myself.

Can somebody confirm Nexus 7 can handle a 64GB MicroSD card? Much obliged.

For movies you shouldn't have a problem. Probably okay for games too if it is just the extra asset data. Now getting a game to install on an external SD card is a whole other story, you might need to manually copy it over and create symlinks. Could be a bit of trouble.
When the Nexus was first out I heard there were problems getting apps to see movies on an OTG storage, I think there was a root solution to that, but I am not sure. There might even be a simpler solution since then.
Note: I've not done any of this myself, just basing it on my general knowledge on how Android and Linux works.

Using a cheap OTG cable and a generic SD Card (full size; not micro) Reader, I can play movies just fine. Since full size SD are cheaper per gb than micro, I'm not sure why anyone would want to use micro cards, but whatever floats your boat. My N7 is rooted, but stock. I installed StickMount. All my cards are Class 10 or UHS 1

Is the card formatted in NTFS? If so try formatting using FAT32.
Hope this helps
Or even FAT without 32 if that possible. And that should fix the problem
I just buy a Kingston 32G class 4 sdcard, my DHD is no problem. Other my sdcard format is Fat32.

I have the same card and it works very well formatted to FAT32. Good Read/Write speeds considering it's a big card.
Cool I'll try this but now have to get a card reader as one I had broke... nice to know other people got the same kingston card working

Help! Restarting after insertting a micro sd card.

Hey any time I insert my micro sd that has more then about 300mg of stuff on it my TF will keep restarting and not read whats on the disk. It works fine on the computer and I've ran a virus check / reformatted the card and I still can't figure out the problem.. any advice? It's a Class 4 Duracell micro SD.

Yeah pushed the wrong key. And yes apparently they do. I'm wondering if it's the quality of the card?
Also what file system does the TF accept? I've been formatting the card to FAT32 (the one my computer automatically chooses)..?
what class? just for for a test try another micro SD card and see if u have the same issue

Yup just did that, swapped it with the one out of my phone. Formatted both, loaded them up and the duracell works fine in the phone and the the other which has been perfect in my phone for months is doing the same thing to the TF. It seems that if there's too much stuff on the the TF goes holy **** **** too much! and crashes / restarts.
EDIT: it's a class 4
I'm going to try putting movies on instead of music... maybe it's the mp3 files...
Ok so now my TF is barely even recognizing the sd card... it'll say preparing sd card when i insert it but if i click on the file viewer there's nothing in it.. then 30 seconds later the little icon disappears and no more sd card found... **** this is getting annoying.. and im far away from civilization for work..
i was going to downgrade to 3.01 from the leaked 3.1 now i can't even do that.
Quick question. Can I format SD and microSD using the Transformer? I'm guessing this would be the most compatible alternative. I'm not yet rooted.

EXFat is now supported on the SGS3!!! Tip for fast sdcard inside!

So I just seen that the SGS3 supports EXFat and files over 4gb's now. So if you want a really fast SD card, consider formatting from Fat32 over to exfat, and set block size to 16mb or 32mb. I know most if not all my files are 5mb or way over that, so not much space is wasted! I hope that helps someone

Can you format ex fat in the phone itself or has to be pc? I purchased a 64gb sdxc card and will need to do this.

Why on earth would you want a 32 MB block size? Seems like you would end up with a ton of wasted space.

Well for me I have a lot of movies, huge pictures, music over 7mb. I myself use 16mb. But for people that want full speed from exfat will select 32mb.

So would that mean that any files I have under 16mb will in fact take up 16mb of space? Even files that are only a few kb?
Yes. I know it sounds scary, but most small items are stored on the phone sdcard.

I unloaded my 64gb sd card, put it in the phone and it formatted it to exfat, I copied all my data back to the card and did a restore from mybackup pro, after the restore and reboot I then received a damaged sd card, i'm not sure what's going on, The only 2 options on windows is NTFS and exFat
Performance gain will be nominal. You're talking a phone here, not a database server dealing with heavy iOPS. I have a 64GB Class 10 in mine and performance could not be better. I also had a ***** of a time getting the card to register after I let my PC format it, had to, absolutely had to, let the device format it.
Note: I'm a heavy performance user who goes for maximum battery without overly sacrificing performance. Professionally, I build and configure SAN's for Exchange, SQL and vSphere. I make no claims to being a phone development god (thought about refreshing my skills there but frankly, don't have the time), BUT I'm also VERY good at what I do.

Had the same problem. I had no option but to let the phone format it. Delete the partition in windows and then you can format it. If you find another way though, let me know!
Sorry misread your post, I had the same error and had to let it reformat. Did you unplug it and put it into your PC? Were any corrective scans or anything done?
I removed everything back off the card, formatted it to fat32 and copied everything back to it, put it back in the phone and it's still saying it's damaged. Sucks, it's been in my EVO3D for a week now with no problems.
is the extra juice really worth the possibility of data corruption? Im not trying to be a wise guy, just really been wondering myself.

Well I must say now I'm worried. But I'm still going to test, I copy huge files to and from on a regular basis, if it saves me 3% in time each time, that is still worth it to me in the long run. I have very little patience, and all that time adds up.

No it does not but you can get it in 32GB at OPPO Style which I think solves that.
Im with corey on the Cloud storage. Instead of keeping photos and videos on your device just back them up to one of the many cloud services, google drive, dropbox, or my favorite box (got 50gb's free from them <3). Then just delete the photos/videos from your device and you will have all the room you want for movies. We also are waiting on OTG enabled in the kernel but it may be sometime for we see that. OTG would pretty much take care of all your memory issues.

only if you have unlimited data (or high limit)
according to oppo, OTG isn't supported hardware-wise at all (so any kernel fixes won't work)

With the Oppo Find 5 32 GB version, I think the cloud will get you through the same as having and SD card, that is my plan anyways there are so many cloud services that are giving out free storage. This is pretty much the best device you can buy for the price that has 32GB of storage built in. With 32 GB built in you can play all your games and apps right from the device. I had the International One X and never filed 32GB up with all my games or apps. That was one of the main attractions for me when purchasing the Oppo Find 5, because on other 16GB devices you cant play games or apps from an SD card, so really a cloud is just as good as an SD card basically, they will both do the same thing.
For some reason Google screwed their system up by not allowing programs such as apps2sd and others that do the same on Gingerbread, at least I still think Gingerbread can do this? I don't see why they did this, other than the fact that they are most likely trying push their cloud service but even with Google Cloud you cant play games or apps. You would think they would want to sell more apps and games from the play store but what happens when you only got 16GB, you can only buy so much to have on your device at once. I' thinking next year or the following year 64GB and 128GB are going to be standard with new devices having it built in 64GB and 128GB, yeah that would be really nice 128GB onboard, no SD card crap to mess with.

[Q] 16GB Owners, What are you doing with the low space storage problem?

Yes I got a 32GB Samsung, but the thing is with the installations and all the bloat, is there something I can do? With my S3 I used aroma debloater it was awesome it left my phone free of non useful stuff.

As the others said, get a SD card. Also VERY helpful is Folder Mount as it lets you remap the /sdcard/Android folder from the internal memory to the external SD card which gets around the problem that most apps want to store everything inside those folders or directly in /sdcard.

i am suing sandisk 16 gig for the past 1 year and no issues till now, and most of the times its a life saver as i keep everything in my sd card (music pic etc)...

/sdcard is a link to /storage/emulated/0

I don't really put a lot of stuff on my phone as I have a separate mp3 player on me at all times, so the space taken up by bloat wasn't really a problem. I already had a 32GB card on me though so I slapped that in.
