[Q] Nexus 7 - how good is it at handling games? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to buy a tablet for playing games, but I also need it to handle 3G, have some decent GPS and a camera. Since Nexus doesn't have 3G, a decent GPS (it doesn't have GLONASS) and a rear camera I'm not happy with it (I can buy 3G modem, but with other things there's not much I can do), but I read that it is totally awesome when it comes to games.
So my question is: is it? I presume it has access to some Tegra3 exclusive games, but are there so many of them and are they unique enough to make me care? Also, since it's Tegra3 it probably handles most games better than older devices, but do higher details and more FPS compensate for small screen? I wonder whether to buy some 10 inch tablet instead (eg. Galaxy Tab 2 P5100, Acer Iconia A501, Motorola XOOM MZ601, Galaxy Tab P7500).

It seems like you would be happier with a Transformer Prime or TF300. The Nexus has a fine GPS (I always lock within seconds) and is great at playing games (Tegra 3 is second to none in regards to gaming right now).
Lack of 3G and a rear camera seem like deal breakers for you though. Get the tablet that has everything you need, or you will end up regretting it.

Off course tegra 3 is great at handling games....
But as far u want 3g ang gps too u can look for galaxy tab 2 7"(dont go for 10" it is a over priced waste.u can look for note 10.1 instead).it have everything u want and its also perform great in games....
For 10" variant my suggestion is note 10.1

Transformer or Note are a little too expensive for me. I should've mentioned that I have limited budget (I live in Poland and Nexus 7 costs about 300$ here, and that is the most I'm willing to spend on a tablet).
I was just wondering whether I will be able to live without a camera and with an additional device for 3G thanks to the Tegra3 gaming experience. That's why I'm trying to figure out how good is it. I'm not convinced that a 7inch screen will provide a significantly better gaming experience than a 10inch screen, even when details and FPS are better (I have 32inch HD Ready TV and 21inch Full HD monitor and I prefer the former). Also, I read that Tegra2 exclusives are available on other devices thanks to Chainfire 3D, although I can't find any information about how those games perform on eg. Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 (P5100). And as for Tegra3 exclusives, there are not that many of them out there, right?

you're telling me that you're hands will do better on a 10" screen then a 7" screen? you cant even compare the gaming experience between the two. 7" wins hands down. how are you gonna hold that 10" clunky piece of garbage in your hands and be comfortable?

It isn't that hard to hold a 10 inch tablet. Unless you of course have fairly small hands.

I'm talking about the visual experience, not the convenience of holding a tablet. I have large hands, 10" screen won't be a problem.

bigger screen = the need for more pixels so they dont look stretched
smaller screen = could have the same amount of pixels for less space to make it look better.
I've have tegra 3 games such as modern combat 3, nova 3, and some pinball game, that I'll tell you right now, look absolutely crazy. If you decide to get a nexus 7, root it, overclock it and it'll run even better.

For me a bigger screen is better, unless there is some radical difference in quality. It seems we have different taste.
I've looked on those titles you've mentioned and they look impressive indeed. Are there more of those Tegra3 exclusives? And do Tegra2 exclusives look better on Nexus than on Tegra2 devices?

im pretty sure if you go to the google play store website and type in "tegra 3 games" it'll show the variety

On Google Play website it isn't even mentioned that Modern Combat 3 is optimized for Nexus 7. Even on tegrazone most of the games are not exclusives. It's pretty confusing.

modern combat 3 may have been a bad example because I don't think that game was made specifically for tegra 3 devices. Check out dead trigger, shadowgun, riptide gp, or fort courage is a good one to

Well, I've just read several reviews and absolutely everyone claim that for gaming there is no better device than Nexus 7 and that a 7 inch screen is better than a 10 inch screen. I'm pretty surprised by this concept, since I thought that I will just put a tablet on my laps and then play, but somehow it seems that you have to hold your device while playing. It is pretty weird, but that many people probably cannot be wrong.

Coming from an iPad, I prefer the N7 for gaming. Its smaller and lighter when playing games and the GPU is absolutely amazing. I find that android has a lack of games and apps in comparison to iOS though. I have already played most of the games on my iPad that I find in the play store now.

Well, you've pretty much convinced me to buy a Nexus 7. Now I have to figure out how to overcome the lack of 3G, because that's the most serious deal-breaker for me. I can probably handle lack of camera and GPS without GLONASS, but I absolutely need my tablet to have 3G. MiFi seems like perfect solution and those devices have a microSD slot, but I don't know whether I will be able to install games on a card accessible through WiFi. I guess I'll just buy it and find out.

Coming from G-Tablet

I'm having to return my gtablet because there is an issue with the sound and the battery. I bought it from someone on ebay so I can't get a replacement. I have to say apart from the sound going out for no reason whatsoever the gtablet was amazing. So fast and responsive. I played with the xoom today which I preordered from amazon. And I really love honeycomb's interface and that the buttons are on the screen but I can't say I'm at all impressed with the performance. I used the browser and it was so slow and laggy and wouldn't respond to my touches half the time. And I made sure to use the task manager to kill all other apps. Also the flash video performance was sub par compared to the gtablet.
Then I downloaded speedx 3d free and it ran no better that it does on my nexus one. Whereas on my gtablet it runs so buttery smooth at 60 fps. The xoom that I was playing with at best buy was on the newest update. I hope these r just software issues with honeycomb that get ironed out soon but I don't feel to confident for some reason. Something tells me I'm not going to see the kind of raw performance like I did with the gtablet, as nice as honeycomb is.
Where you running a custom rom on your G-tablet? That would explain its stability and speed.

Gtab runs froyo and a lower resolution. But has same processor. That explains the performance difference. HC is still new and is not optimized fully yet. At this point you're a early adopter and will deal with bugs and performance issues.

What was your opinion on the screen difference? 2.2 on a Tegra2 is like running XP on an i5.
If it's any consolation I have no problems with lag in general and SpeedX runs super. I only get a momentary delay here and there in certain apps, not worth complaining about.
I just got my Xoom on Friday and I am Very, Very impressed with the Speed and Smoothness of the device. I use Dolphin HD as my Browser and it runs just fine. No lag and pages load rather quickly (even while Wirelessly Tethered to my Rooted HTC EVO). I returned the iPad 2 I had and exchanged for the Xoom and have Zero regrets. While the iPad 2 is nice, to me it's just a blown up iPod Touch (I have a 32gb iPod Touch 3rd Gen) so I would know. The Xoom is an Amazing Tablet. I put 3 Blu-Ray movies on my Xoom already (Toy Story 3, MegaMind and Kung-Fu Panda) so the kids can watch movies while we are out and about. As far as Apps go, I have found plenty of Apps for the Xoom and they all look fine to me.

I've seen the same thing - not just in Quadrant / Nenamark but just with the naked eye. My guess is that it's either the higher resolution of the Xoom screen, or perhaps the HC Nvidia drivers are not that mature yet. Either way, the GTablet (and the Adam) seems speedier, overall.
The Xoom TFT screen is definitely better than the GTAB, however.

So let me ask a semi-evil question. You have enough money to buy either a WiFi Xoom or another G-TAB. Which would you get?
Add one more condition, whatever I get I will be "handing down" to someone in November as I plan to get a KalEl tablet when those come out about then (KalEl being the quad-core Tegra that nVidia has begun demoing)?
Thanks in advance!

Other than multi-tasking will the Quad core run any better than the Duo?
I have read that there is little difference between the i5 and i7 except for apps that specifically talk to the extra cores!

If those were the only two options, then a Xoom hands down. It's got a lot of problems (ie. missing microSD support, speed lag at the moment etc.) but it has a MUCH better screen and that is absolutely critical to me.
The reason why I write "the only options" is that I might consider a Tegra 2 IPS device, when they get released. Whenever that happens (maybe in a month?). As for KalEl, that's in the late summer / fall so it's really not on the radar, yet.
I think the Xoom Wifi $600 (or less?) option should be a decent product, especially once they shake out the bugs in Honeycomb.

I Think the Quad is supposed to be 5x Faster than the Dual. and that the GPU has 16 cores or somin. The Newer Tegra Nvidia chips Blow away the last.
You should have really not use task manager and kill apps. Because most of them will restart after being killed. So all the apps start at once will cause the gpu generates lots of power and the os may get unresponsive and laggy. So get rid of that damn task manager.

Java programs will immediately take advantage of all 4 cores since Java is naturally multithreaded.
Until these benchmarking apps are updated to take advantage of OpenGL 2.0 you're not going to see high scores on any Honeycomb tablet.
Well, I had considered the iPad 2, but I am trying to get away from supporting iOS at home. Particularly as ugly as the upgrade for the original iPad to the latest update went.
I would like to get something now since I believe the Tegra 2 IPS tablets you're referring to are likely to be more of a July timeframe, and will likely be quickly passed over by the KalEl chips.
For the person asking if the additional cores will make much difference - the current Tegra 2 is most comparable to an Intel Atom. And the programs and video performance on these tablets pretty much match that.
The KalEl is supposed to actually exceed Core 2 Duo speeds and capabilities. So in that sense we are talking about going from essentially a netbook to essentially a notebook in terms of performance. Heck that is why there are rumors of an iPad 3 in that same timeframe. Because once that generation of chips come out it is going to be a very open question whether you need anything more than a tablet and a bluetooth keyboard for anything that requires less than a true desktop experience.
My .02 worth of course
how much do you think these newer tablets will cost? same 600 dollar price range? I'd probably want to sell my wifi xoom and then buy a newer model rather than wait that long.

If you're talking the KalEl equipped tablets, I presume they will be in about the same range, with the current tablets discounted a little similar to what Apple did with the first generation iPads. That said, I expect there to be just limited availability over the holiday season with probably only one or two manufacturers shipping by Thanksgiving.
Of course there are already some component shortages due to the Japanese earthquake. One area where Apple has an advantage since they have pre-ourchased a lot of their supplies. So while they may get them later than planned, they usually are assured of getting them first, and at a fixed cost.
FWIW...
Always take your experience with a display model with a grain of salt. Unlike the fresh G tab that you unboxed yourself and handled/tweaked with care, the display Xoom has gone through hours upon hours of goobers and children wailing away at it, changing default settings, etc.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Some parts of Dalvik (android's version of java), like the garbage collector, will take advantage of multiple cores. Android as an OS uses tons of threads, and will get snappier with more cores... but Android was written to explicitly use multiple threads.
What I'm saying is that apps won't use multiple cores unless the programmer DESIGNS them that way.

[Q] a500 vs galaxy tab 7 (screen)

I wanna know how is its screen quality comparing to galaxy tab 7?
and what are the disadvantages of not having an unlock bootloader ?
tnx
I can compare a tomato and a steack ?
what the advantage to sit on my sofa ?
Hard to tell. Glaxy tab 7 is a sub par product of a previous generation, doesn't come close to iconia in any way.
On the tabs 10.1 and 8.9 the screen quality is certainly better but you wouldn't notice without the tablets side to side.
The locked bootloader has been hacked so that point is irrelevant. It's purpose is to install custom roms.
The disadvantage of all other tablets over iconia is the lack of a full size USB port. Caring all kinds of proprietary adapters isn't exactly the ideal solution.
tnx
I wanted to buy iconia, but the screen quality made me hesitate
I saw galaxy tab 7's screen before and it was so good
so I'm going to buy Iconia

I don't know where you have got that idea from, but it simply isn't true.
First of all, the GTab 7 has a very good IPS display that is better than the Iconia's display. That's not to disparage the Iconia's panel though.
Secondly, the GTab 7 is a far better media player than any of the current crop of Honeycomb tablets due to much broader codec and container support.
Thirdly, given the dearth of Honeycomb optimised applications, the fact that the GTab 7 doesn't have Honeycomb is not the disadvantage that it should be.
The GTab 7 is most definitely not a sub-par product, and in many ways it is still very current - there is no better 7" tablet on the market in my opinion, which is quite impressive given it is nearly a year old.
However, it tends to serve a different purpose than its larger brethren, so can't really be directly compared.

Dave

That might be true if this was an iPod where you're stuck with a stock video player, but this becomes a non-factor as soon as you install RockPlayer or MoboPlayer, which plays everything thrown at it. Does anyone really use the stock video player on any Android device? They're all just so limiting that I question why anyone would do that unless they have an iPod mentality and/or just don't know that there are superior 3rd-party video players available for free.

This will only improve with each passing day. Honeycomb is now the standard OS for tablets, just like Gingerbread is now the standard OS for phones. Anyone who would say that it's better to run an older version of an OS is likely someone who is stuck with a device that cannot upgrade.
They're really not comparable devices. They're a full year apart, significantly different size screens, and a huge OS version difference. With the Galaxy Tab being about the same price as the A500, unless you HAVE to have a smaller tablet or built-in 3G, there's really no reason to choose the Galaxy Tab at this point.
A better comparison would be between the A500 and a newer Galaxy Tab model, which is the comparison I made and the A500 won out (for me) for a variety of reasons, specifically price and feature set.

The problem is that it *isn't* improving with each passing day. Personally, I'd expected Honeycomb optimised applications to explode onto the scene, but frankly it hasn't happened. The majority of apps that I run on either tablet are all pre-Honeycomb. It will change, but it isn't changing as quickly as I'd hoped.
Honeycomb desperately needs more apps, because for the most part we are using upscaled "Phone" apps. This isn't as big an issue as it is/was for the iPad, since a well written Android app will scale properly, but it's not taking advantage of what Honeycomb has to offer.

I agree they are not comparable (I even said so myself), but that doesn't make the Galaxy Tab sub-par which is the point of my post. In some ways it is still superior to *any* Honeycomb tablet and that is a fact I'm afraid (mostly due to Tegra-2).

Yes, I agree that a better comparison is against the 10.1" Galaxy Tab, but that's not the point of this thread is it?
The OP was asking about the screen of the GTab 7 vs the Iconia, and frankly the GTab 7 does have a better screen than the Iconia!
FWIW - screenwise, it's:
Xoom < Iconia < Transformer < GTab 7 < GTab 10.1
Having said that, I would only consider the Xoom's screen to be actually "bad".
Regards,

I have both devices! Here is the simple comparison:
Display: Galaxy TAB (better picture quality, better warmer colors)
Codec support: Galaxy TAB (I've thrown everything but the kitchen sink and it plays it) Rock Player/MoboPlayer are good players but software rendering is NOT for 1080p!
But then again, I'm selling my TAB now and keeping the A500!
tnx everyone
now I'm just confused
I want to buy Iconia but the only thing that makes me worry is the screen quality
in comparision vids I saw galaxy tab 10 is far better in this field
but USB 2 on this and dust and moisture under g tab 10 screen makes me choose this
I heard Iconia have a much better screen compare to Xoom
I wanna now those who have Iconia, is it noticable in real life usage? I mean the bad quality

Why would 1080p be necessary for a 7" screen? I'm finding 720p on my 10" A500 screen to typically be overkill and definitely not worth the file size required. There's a Law of Diminishing Returns here, and I'm pretty sure that 1080p on a 7" screen is just that. "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" also likely applies.
I guess that's why I haven't had an playback problems you mention, but I'm a pretty picky videophile when it comes to movies, and I've yet to be disappointed with 720p or less movies on the A500. I suspect I'm enjoying a lot more room on my SD card, too.

You misunderstand the point entirely - it's not that 1080p is necessary on a 7" screen, it's that if you have a large movie collection in 1080p, you want to be able to play them on all of your devices without having to re-encode. For some people, re-encoding simply isn't an option.
In the context of this discussion, it's only relevance is that an earlier poster said that the GTab 7" is a sub-par product that doesn't close to the Iconia in any way, which isn't true.

Sub-par and that it belongs to a previous generation.
Single-core CPUs don't belong in tablet space and Froyo or Gingerbread don't belong on tablets.
I've had the 7" for a while and I have an SGS, I know what I'm talking about.
While smaller screens will always look better and sharper, the processing power, the speed, the memory, the GPU are outdated.
The user experience and build quality don't come even close to Iconia and the 7" screen size is irrelevant.
I do, from all my heart, believe it's a sub-par and useless product and while getting it this time last year might not have been one's most inspired idea, getting one now is the worst idea or recommendation one could make.

Well, if we're going to play the "who's is bigger game".....
I've had Android phones since the T-Mo G1, followed by an Hero, 2 HTC Desire's, a Desire HD, and an HTC Sensation. I've had a cheapo KIRF tablet (which definitely was sub-par crap), a Toshiba AC-100, a Kogan Agora Internet TV Portal, a GTab 7" and a Honeycomb tablet, so I guess that I must know what I'm talking about too??
Interesting to note that whilst you have posted on the SGS forums, you've never posted on the GTab 7s. Perhaps you've not been keeping abreast with the development on the GTab 7, and thus can only really comment on the stock experience, but it is vastly improved with a Gingerbread ROM and a few tweaks here and there - which is something it shares in common with pretty much all Android devices.

The build quality of the GTab 7" is very good indeed - at least as good as the Iconia's IMO, and it *does* have a superior screen. Also, to say that a 7" screen size is irrelevant is pure nonsense - portability is crucial for some people. Irrelevant to you perhaps, but that isn't the same thing!
I do, from all my heart, believe it's a sub-par and useless product and while getting it this time last year might not have been one's most inspired idea, getting one now is the worst idea or recommendation one could make.

Given that there are hardly any Honeycomb applications, the GTab 7 runs practically all the same applications so if it is useless, surely all the HC tablets too? The GTab 7 can also run the so-called "Tegra-2" only apps like GOF2 very well indeed with CF3D, so clearly the GPU and processor are still very much up to scratch for the applications that are currently available!
There are plenty of reasons why the GTab 7 is still a good tablet - it's not a direct competitor to the 10.1 HC tablets though because it serves a different set of requirements.
All this is not to say that your opinion isn't any less (or more!) valid than mine, but that is all they are - opinions! I've merely presented a couple of areas where the GTab 7" is verifiably superior than the current crop of Honeycomb tablets.

Dave
I'm going to go out on a limb and say you are to easy to please You've seen android so early that the current versions look awesome no matter what.
I only know how much it changed from 2.1 to 2.2 and the difference was huge!
As for GOF2 it was one of my assessment points. It's damn heavy on that cpu, it heats it up a lot, it drains the battery fast and has long loading times.
On tegra 2, it barely gets warm-ish and runs like a dream. I wouldn't want to catch 2012 single-cored.
As for honeycombs apps, only one so far didn't scale right for me, some startup app remover that kept staying in 800x480 but since it's more of an utility, doesn't bother me that much.
I don't like the 7" size because it's too small for documents. Before I tried out the tab 7" I was obsessed with a viliv x70 (win 7) and the dream of full office in the palm of my hand.
Now with Iconia I think 10 is a minimum, and this with dedicated apps.

You should've seen 1.6 (Donut) to 2.1 (Eclair) - makes the jump from 2.1 to 2.2 look quite small!

It's a case of horses for courses - I want a 7" tablet for when I travel for work (which is quite frequently these days) because it can comfortably fit in a jacket pocket, which means I can take it out and about without having to carry a bag.
For home use, a larger tablet is likely to be the better choice, which is why I have both!

I'd possibly be tempted by the Galaxy Tab 8.9 as a single device, but I think it's probably too large to be pocketed, and not that much smaller than a 10.1" tablet to make a different.
I was hoping to buy Iconia A100, but that seems to have dropped off Acer's radar, and there are alternatives (e.g the Huawei MediaPad, Viewsonic ViewPad 7x, and Asus Eee Pad Memo) that might come to the market first.

Is the Acer Iconia W510 the way to go?

Price wise, it is really catching my eye, although I'm speaking the "Tablet" only.
I feel as though the dock bundle is a bit pricey. $750.
Anyone have this & want to share a mini review or an alternative peice of hardware in comparison, value wise?

Got to get that x86 processor. Prices for intel w8 tablets should drop around $500 soon. $750 is way too much for a glorified netbook.
True... Hell, surface really screwed the new wave of Windows, price wise.

What happened to it?
The Acer W510 tablets have been yanked off all the Best Buy and Future Shop web sites - like it never existed? Anybody hear what happened?
Probably because it has only 32GB. For full Win8, that means only a few GB remains for data use. There's no space for anything else. It's not a usable device.
Perhaps not so coincidentally, the 32GB W510 is available now in MS Store as a $399 Cyber Monday deal.

I'm definitely planning on getting this device..at the price point it seems to offer the most bang for the buck. I like the size and weight and think it'll serve its purpose (consumption tablet w/ the ability to run full xbmc and ACTUAL desktop web pages) just fine. Aside from its lack of availability the only other thing I'm waiting for is a more detailed video review. In the meantime I've found this:

I have the Samsung Series 7 slate that came with Windows 7. I love it, with Win8 that is. It has 64gb of space and you can add a microsd as well. Also has the i5 processor and 4gb ram. You can get one on eBay for maybe 600 or less tablet only. I was tempted a bit by the new Ativ 500, but it has the atom processor and half the ram. They are releasing a new series 7 but really pricey. Get the series 7 with win 7, pay the 40 for the upgrade and you won't regret it.:good:

I take it with me everywhere. The 11.6 really to me is great. I mean, obviously it is a little bigger, but the screen resolution is so nice it is great. I got the Samsung Book cover for it, and carry it with me no problems. I had a 10.1 sammy gtab before. Battery life is good, except if you watch a lot of video, then it sucks it up. but that is true with any tablet. It lasts me all day though. I have never had to charge it before maybe 8 in the evening. The thing that is great over every tablet I have seen running win8 is no lag at all. I mean this thing is butter smooth. I have replaced my laptop completely with this. It runs desktop software great. Some are not made for touch though, so the stylus make that experience much better. If you want, the bluetooth keyboard works very well too.
For me, i'm still haven't decided between asus vivobook and acer iconia w7.
I still can't decided which form factor i want, a tablet or a touch screen laptop.

The Vivo is nice, but I just can't get with rt only. I really like win8, I think is great for a tablet, and if you want something this is completely usable, rt just isn't there yet. Surface pro will be out, but 1 grand. Stiff. 4 hours battery life. Bummer. I love the form factor though. :good:

That is a headache waiting to happen. The processor is far too weak to get any real use out of it, even with an SSD.
Sometimes its worth saving just a little extra.
This device is a great tablet at a great price
I got the iconia W510 and I have to admin that I love it. It will take a little time to get used to the windows 8 gestures but after that it works very well. Also the $400 price tag is a steal for a fully x86 compatible tablet. Even though it has only the Atom clover trail, it's fast enough and does not really lag. It can do hbo-go from the browser with no issues. The screen is beautiful and clear. It also has NFC even though that does not seem to be advertised and not sure what it could be used for yet.... And for the record I am NOT a Microsoft fan boy, I have an IPad 3, an iPad mini, iPhone 5 and still love those devices but I got to admit that this tablet is great and I can use it to replace my laptop using the BT keyboard and mouse. I just need to get the keyboard dock and that can definitely replace a work laptop...
I decided on this device w/keyboard dock for these personal reasons:
not RT - 'nuff said
price - ivy bridge would be great, but not at those prices, I just assume sacrifice the hybrid flexibility and get a kick-ass ultrabook
size - 11.6" is cool for a notebook, but too cumbersome for a tablet
keyboard dock - it's very stable when docked and easy to connect/disconnect, the Asus less so, and I've heard multiple complaints of the Samsung Ativ frequently losing its connection altogether (no keyboard response), not acceptable
battery life - can work all day while docked and still have a fully charged tablet battery, the surface pro estimates are pathetic
storage - wish it had more on-board, I eliminated any 32 gb model from consideration
performance - granted, there's a hit compared to ivy bridge, but no doubt clover trail is an improvement over the previous atom, so far this has not been an issue for what I do with the device
For sure, my purchase decision is filled with compromises and trade-offs, but I guess that's how it is when considering a 1st-generation hybrid. I could have waited for the next gen when there will likely be less trade-offs and better values. But no, I wanted one of these now! I'm loving the flexibility of having a laptop and tablet in one device, and being able to run x86 apps helps make up for stuff lacking in the Windows store (i.e. DropBox).
Anyone able to comment on multitasking and gaming? specifically what is gaming like on the devcice. I know you wont get performance when playing games like modern warfare crysis etc but whats it like on the tablet games angry birds/jetpack joyride/riptide gp etc? I want something purely for consumption multimedia light gaming and internet surfing streaming, and am trying to deciede between intel and rt.

I have the Asus Vivo Tab 11.6" one with Clover Trail processor like the Acer W510 and it does all the games from the Windows store quite well. It does Pinball FX2, and RIptide perfectly smooth. Hydro Thunder for some reason isn't as smooth on some parts but still smooth enough to be playable. I even installed Iron Man PC game from 2007 and it plays really well. Even the newest Google earth with 3d buildings works decently, but it sometimes crashes the graphics driver.
Multitasking is very smooth. When installing apps I can tell it takes like twice as long as an I5 or I7 PC but there's no lag at least. Switching between apps is very fast and smooth no matter what I have running on the background.
I have the Samsung 500T. I picked it because I wanted a 11.6 inch tablet for the more spacious keyboard. I had a real bad time with Acer's TF300 keyboard being too small and worried the W510 would be a similar experience.
That said. I do hate how slick the back of the 500T is. And it's really bad with 1080p videos. A reviewer mentioned their 500T had problems with 1080p also, but the W510 had no problems at all. So hopefully it's not a hardware limitation and Samsung can fix this eventually.
It's a shame so many Windows 8 Atom tablets have been delayed until mid January. Had I more patience, I probably should have waited. I think I might have liked the HP Envy X2 more. The ASUS seems to be out of the question with it's crazy price tag of $800 just for the tablet.
As for multitasking. I try to do it sparingly. And I avoid doing anything at all while x86 apps are installing as it's very laggy. I tend to spend most of my time with desktop apps. On the Windows 8 (Metro) those apps usually fly (as long as they don't involve playing 1080p videos).
Hey guys...typing this from the w510 keyboard dock I got from acer today. I bought my 32gb w510 from microcenter for $399 plus tax. Keyboard was $160 shipped. I've been using the keyboard for 10 minutes and will say I freaking love it. I guess I'm just so attracted to the functionality that a keyboard/touchpad add (had the original asus transformer). feels even more natural in the windows 8 environment.
The tablet itself is very lightweight, and I personally really like how it looks, the white trim, silver back, clean design. yes its plastic but mine feels really good.
Now for you guys new to the w510 there are some possible game breakers for you as far as bugs...
Sound will randomally just die and you have to restart the tablet to get it back. This has NOT happened to me since I installed the latest bios/drivers. Similarly, it has frozen on me a couple times, again - this has not happened to me since the drivers. Finally there is a big issue with the touchpad becoming wildly inaccurate. theres a debate whether that's a hardware issue or driver issue. Mine has not gone bonkers yet.
I gotta say I really like this tablet overall... especially with the dock for the price. My nexus 10 arrived today, I'm only keeping one of them.... I'll be honest and say its gonna be really hard to give up the w510 because of the overall package.
Those interested in gaming - the atom is not graphics friendly but it will play the windows store games. Performance wise, the atom should deliver similar non gaming/graphics functionality to that of the n10's xyneos (spelling) - I believe anandtech did a comparison on this.

Is the Shield Tablet still worth buying?

I've been considering new tablets, and honestly the Shield Tablet has the features I want and I'm able to get one for $250, which seems reasonable. But I'm just wondering if it's still worth it as the it is a year old. How does it compare to newer devices?
If you're primarily going to be using it for gaming, there isn't a better tablet out there. The tablet is a steal for $250. The latest official update really makes the tablet shine and the custom rom called "Blisspop" even makes the device that much better in terms of performance. You won't regret getting one.
Well at the moment there are not many tablets that are faster (maybe even no faster) than this tablet.
Antutu scores are one of the highest even compared with the latest phones.
So speedwise it is still top notch and tablets that maybe come close you have to pay double the price for compared to a shield.
The 32Gb with Lte is unbeaten for that price.
I bought the 32GB LTE version in July, because an LTE tablet anywhere close to the Shield in terms of specs/screen etc. would have been ~$150 more.
Despite the battery recall issue, I'm satisfied with it. My (original) unit has been working perfectly and is very smooth with Lillipop 5.1 (the 3.1 OTA).
I should be receiving my replacement tomorrow, according to UPS. Presuming it doesn't have a defect, I'm looking forward to settling in. I never bothered to settle in on the old tablet (automatic actions, power saving stuff, that kind of thing) since I found out about the recall shortly after buying it, and didn't bother to fine tune it.
I recommend the tablet as an LTE device in the US, though if I didn't need the LTE connectivity probably there might be better values in wifi only (I'm not a gamer, so other tablets could meet my needs... but there are relatively few 8" LTE tablets without permanently locked bootloaders here).
Marc
The problem of the tablet is really the processor that is getting old pretty quick (don't know exactly it's true performance), but nowadays everything coming out is already being 8 cores at 2 ghz or more.
Keep Cool
But they are often not faster. Gpu of the shield is very fast maybe the fastest around at the moment. The SOC is still one of the fastest around and it is just on the market for 1 year so not that old.

There seem to be two of them for sale at that link when I go to it. One for $290, one for $320, both advertised as new (resale). Probably you're just filtering by Canadian sellers, based on your picture. Lots of folks in US won't ship outside the US, so no big deal that they aren't showing up for you.

The thing is that there aren't much AAA games to play in the shield, it's a good device more for the extra nvidia stuff.
I'm waiting for Borderlands 2 for a damn long time, but it never comes, and I don't even know if it runs on the device with good performance or if it's just for the Shield TV.
More impressive are some cheap windows tablets that for around 350€ can even run Battlefield 3 on low to mid.
Now with DX12 and tons of compatibility tablets might go more for windows again.
In fact I'm not liking much android, not a single game like the good old C&C Red alert 2, boot takes almost 2 times longer than my wind 10 PC, some websites stop working, multitasking is a joke since we can't even play a youtube music while doing anything else...
ps: Also in most performance tests we see other tablets ahead of Shield, so I don't think anything is actually that much optimized for it, not even most tegra games.

My Shield Tablet LTE topped my Nexus 9's scores on Antutu plus the Shield gaming is great to have. Let's not forget about the SD slot and the mini HDMI port on top either. This tablet still destroys everything else (even most phones) a year later. I really mine because it has a stylus and no dumb Samsung home button like their Tablet S/S2 does. Its hard to find a good tablet these days yet the Shield holds its ground and doesn't seem to lose any performance over time. I like playing Half Life 2 on it or DOOM 3 especially when I travel. Its nice to have a tablet which can play nice games too even though that's not its primary purpose for me.

Those cheap windows tablets also use Intel chips in most cases plus Windows an as OS handles things differently than Android does. I agree that there aren't many great games but the ones they do have are fun in my opinion. I have the Shield TV as well and I play all kinds of games including emulators without any issues. My i7 Samsung Ultra book probably can't handle some of the games the Shield can then again I haven't tried. I'm not a big PC gamer but I do know the GPU isn't that great in most Windows tablets/ultrabooks. Android M fixes a lot of the productivity issues and adds multi window and I'm sure Nvidia is working on it now anyway. They tend to lush updates out promptly in most cases unless there's a big issue.
I haven't seen another tablet have better gaming performance than he Shield or Nexus 9 since hwy share a GPU yet use different CPU's. My Nexus 6's SD805 doesn't come close to he 3D score that the tablet does but on Marshmallow it does get a nice ~1500 pt boost likely from the optimization in it. I can imagine the same will occur in the Shield Tablet but we won't know until Nvidia releases it.
I'm not saying the Shield is the best fit everyone but it is a great tablet if you are in the market for a LTE enabled 8in tablet thats fast, runs near stock Android and has nice games for it.
Most of those BEST Nvidia Shield games coming soon are old and I finished them already. (RES5, Half Life, Borderlands, Doom...).
The thing is, you get a good device, but you will probably end playing most games that your phone already can play maxed out.
Other thing is Nvidia blahblahblah says it's more powerful than a X360 GPU, but then most games have a little lag and nothing, but really nothing made to the android yet comes close to most X360\PS3 gameplay\physics (they just look good, but plays like crap).
Then it's my 4th Nvidia shield all are defective and the last one needs to go to RMA again.
I never had an android device, so I wanted to try it, with my experience is just a god damn bugged SO worst than windows.
Also I got sad with the strategy games and how nothing on the android thousand of games even come close to Command and Conquer Red Alert II from like 2000
My opinion:
GOOD:
- hardware Performance;
- Sound;
- has it's own wireless gamepad;
- Nvidia software + remote pc play (button mapping already in the tablet, no need to root 4 that);
- More games than other android devices;
BAD:
- Android is not really optimized;
- Not much AAA games:
- Nothing like C&C, age of empires, Skyrim........ (most games are very cheap copies of good games, but look like a 2003 game);
- In the real world, performance is not as big as nvidia make you think (best phones now probably have better performance, like Samsung S6 which is a lot more little and doesn't come close to having more than a hundred cores like this nvidia);
- Screen quality is not that awesome, it is a High resolution LCD, but nothing special besides that. It doesn't get any close to samsung phone's\tablet amoled screens;
- Battery doesn't last much either;
I actually think that something like that made for DX12 and wind 10 would probably get almost twice the performance than on the actual android OS. At least I saw some people playing BF3 on dell cheap 1 year old tablets that cost basically the same as this nvidia shield. Nowadays with DX12 and Wind 10 soon may be a new era for tablets (it seems windows based hardware have more performance per price than android devices). At least I never seen any 300€ android tablet playing anything close to a BF3 which is years ahead in gameplay + physics than any android game I ever seen\played until now.
ps: If it was today I would buy a ~350€ DELL wind tablet that can even play BF3 (guess what? No need to Root for anything as you own everything already and can update\mod everything).

Really a shame they haven't updated the specs on the 2nd generation

I was really looking for a gaming tablet (mainly for world of tanks blitz) and the shield k1 was a very viable option for me because of the gaming controller, but when I heard they didn't upgrade the specs I was really disappointed.
So I eventually went with the iPad Air 2, and soon planning to buy a steel series nimbus controller. The price is more then twice as much, adding the controller and the oem Apple cable to be able to connect the tablet to my tv, but in the end I believe it is the better option for gaming and future proofnes.
Or is it? What do you think I should have gotten?

The K1 isn't a 2nd Generation device it's just an makeover! Have the original one and also play Wot Blitz, works great on max settings with an average of 60 fps. Don't use the controller for it, because as i tried it some time ago the game wasn't optimised for it.
So you essentially wanted a more expensive Nvidia option perhaps with the the X1 chip? I think Nvidia wanted to sell more K1 inventory and keep the price at $200. I imagine there will eventually be something new from them though.
The only reason I own the K1 is because of the low-ish price. I don't see value in more expensive tablets.
The Apple products might have a better game library.

Well, the x1 does look promising, but if there's no news about it in the next 28 days before I can return this ipad, i guess I'll have to stick with it.
I really hope they announce something, ios is very optimised but is also extremely limited, even jailbroken.
Read something about Nvidia saying that they had been shut out of the tablet market and were going to focus on gaming devices instead. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I wouldn't count on a Shield Tablet 2. They only sold something like 88,000 units of the Shield Tablet 1.
It's too bad, I just got one and am loving it. Head and shoulders better than my Nexus 7 and I'm really impressed with the stylus. Really impressed. I'm not an artist, but I feel like I should start doodling or something just because I can.

That's really bad news. I'm guessing because they sold in limited countries and really didn't advertise the product at all, which is a shame because they definetly have the budget to do so.
At that price and performance, they could rock the market.
Yeah, no device is perfect, even iPad has it's own cons.. but having the shield tablet is worth the $.
The ipad air 3 should come out in the next few weeks, if it will have the same a9x as the pro i think that i will give it a try( would be my first ios device). Thought first about the pixel c, but well tegra chips arent that good in google devices. I owned a nexus9 and compared to my shield tab it didn't played wot blitz that good on max settings, heats and throttles a lot which leads to frame drops(30fps)although it scored higher in Benchmarks. If you want an Android device for media and gaming there is still nothing better than this 2 year old shield tab.

That's my problem with android, even if it has the horsepower, sometimes the device just won't perform as it should, probably because of lack of optimization.
The iPad 4 still runs games better then most high end android devices.
Wot blitz crash on stock firmware, aoo stay with apple
The shield for the money is amazing. The shield compared to tablets twice it's price is still pretty amazing. I wouldn't get something twice as much just because it's twice as much. I also wouldn't want anything other than Android for a tablet.

No it doesn't. Happened sometimes on 5.1.1 Lollipop but since 6.0 crashes are gone. Btw saw people with ios devices where it also crashed, so it was more a problem of the servers.
