New Launch Video - Galaxy Note II General

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hOX3HYDwTCY
There's some nice s-pen demonstrations that I haven't seen elsewhere.

i so want this phone!!!

Awesome!
That is very true. Nobody ever mentioned about multi-window. Move to 2:07, i have never seen this in any previews. Looks really awesome.

It seems that samsung are focusing on new features of Note 2 ( such as air view) in their previous coverage. they didn't said that other old features (such as multi window in note tablet) are included as well.

A nice video showing the features of S-Pen for the uninitiated.

It shows nothing new but can be useful for people who are not aware of the full functionality of the S-Pen on the device.
Good tutorial
Thanks very much for the link to th S-Pen tutorial. The S-Pen is just one of the incredible features which makes the Note the best phone ever made in my opinion. I've not experienced any problems with the S-Pen whatsoever.

King Note2-Anything better on the horizon?

By better I refer to powerful & versatile.. what about all the rumors of Nexus devices this year?
Yesterday I checked out again the original Note which was uniquely cool but still felt a bit like a prototype Vs. the surprisingly underwhelming S3 which seems like a weak-sauce kid brother of the Note2 & even the underpowered hardware of the Note 10.1 where I could at least test out some of the features (split screen multitasking, resizeable PIP video, pen input etc) that the Note 2 has that hasn't made it to the S3 (will those software features?). If I only wanted another smartphone the OneX variants currently get my vote but the Note2 from everything I've seen seems like the first real supersmartphone or a real versatile powerful pocketable handheld computer. Anyone feel encumbered by its larger size or mainly just empowered?
I did notice that the ladies seem quite intimidated by the Note1's original size & so I do look forward to holding the less wide Note2. I have long fingers so I didn't notice significant issues navigating the original Note but would likely enable gestures like for notification tray etc..(still use currently use GO Launcher)
I assume I'm not the only one here who thinks the Note2 is the current king device in terms of versatility so the question is for how long? I actually value the pen input functionality so it's unlikely anything will replace its reign until the Note3?
I even want to check out those keyboard dockable Samsung Win8 tablets with pen input when they hit as the in-store Asus Transformer Infiinity still with ICS & Note 10.1 still felt laggy..
Considering how many find the HTC One X variants the best in their class (I personally far prefer it to the S3 except for the enclosed battery), I will want to check out the following when its variants make it to the US possibly as one of the rumored Nexus for the holidays:
HTC J Butterfly preview: a stunning 5-inch 1080p phone for Japan (video)
KDDI unveils HTC J Butterfly (HTL21), the first phone with 5-inch 1080p display-"global device. Not bad for a 140g package, and it's waterproof as well, rated at IPX5"
The Note 2's S-pen functionality & software features will likely keep me favoring it but I will want to check this out & I'm feeling more confident that the Note 3 screen will be 1080p unless the battery hit is too brutal. No battery tests on this 1080p device yet..

I think there are even more new small features that I didn't put in list. It’s understandable that samsung didn't put those S-Pen features in our S3 however it’s actually still can be done for some of them. But S3 hardware is able to support the other features and Samsung should have put them in official JB ROM to further enhance our experience. Do you think they will ever come to S3 officially?
The new gallery and camera with the slow and fast motions are available, smart rotation and popup browser got ported as well. And paper artist can be installed with no problems.

Well the Note 2 was only released a few months after the S3 so you would expect these extra features , there's nothing really "revolutionary" that the Note 2 has that the S3 doesn't,i quite like the gallery in the Note 2 there was a flashable zip doing the rounds but no matter how many times i tried i couldn't get it tio work yet it was working fine when i flashed Dragon ROM (or was it Android Revolution) which had it included already.

ya true ...we already have
1. new gallery
2. new camera
3. smart rotation
all ported..
only thing left is multi view
The note 2 gallery´s that i found all have one bug, when set wallpaper from tw give fc
Anyone have a gallery that works 100%?
As soon as I get my device I'm flashing Siyah, then will probably stick to stock, Flash new Camera and gallery and some other Note II stuff.
Either way Phones4u have both phones on display side by side and the Note II has the advantage with software, I just hope Samsung don't be stuck up and decide to bring most of the features to the S3.
If it is about other Samsung devices, and its capabilities which I'd like to have onboard my S3, I would mention 8GB RAM, 1GB Nvidia graphic, and 750GB HDD which I have on my Samsung laptop. It has simcard slot, so can be used as the phone, either.
Guys, RLY? While I can understand that someone would compare 9305 with 9300 because both are phones, calling for Note 2 seems a bit strange...
ups - almost forget to ask that someone should port 5x50W audio output from my Samsung Home Cinema system

Don't confused between hardware and software. Software is flexible while hardware is not. I said no point having s-pen features in s3 but not the other.

So the note 2 has the same camera assembly as s3? if it is, that is a bummer.
That is what is nice of Android. Everything ported. Devs are awesome!

Underlined are what ported already. Bolded are what not ported yet. I think what most of us really want from Note 2 is Multi Window. We could care less about S Pen stuffs. I know you're talking about Samsung themselves giving it to us (instead of ports from amazing devs), but don't you remember the old days when Samsung refused to give ICS update to Galaxy S I9000? At the end of that device's life span, Samsung pushed an update giving many Galaxy S2 features like Touchwiz 4.0 including a few others. So, my money is on Samsung giving those features to S3 users. But the real question is when.

For the camera, if I'm not wrong only 1/3 of features is ported. Wasn't S3 too early to get value pack treatment? There should be one more android update. I understand what you mean, we might only get them when near eol.

People keep saying Smart Rotation is ported, but I can't find it anywhere. Any links please? That seems to be the only useful feature Samsung implemented since Galaxy S1.

Why not use this thread as a count of how many features have been ported and which are not.
Add things like Gallery, Camera, Popup Browser etc with a strike-through on them.
To show that those have been ported, and which have not been.
Cheers.

Galaxy note 10.1 2014 after one year

I have owned note about one year, still play it every day, and find new functions and hidden features now and then.
Note 10.1 is so a versatile device that you can never take full advantage of it.
It is still the king of tablets at the end of 2014, and is the most underrated device in 2014(just see all the reviews at Android blogs.)
Note 10.1 is everything,
It is my camera, note 10.1 has the best camera among tablets (although most commentators just dismissed it as no so useful, and ipad air 2 suddenly changed their opinions)
It is my GPS, my note is wifi version, but can still be used as navigation device without data connection, and save phone a lot of battery power.
It is my noting and sketching book. Thanks to Lecture notes and Papyrus, I seldom use paper and pencil now. Paperless world isn't just a fiction.
It is my laptops, using Debian Jessie in chroot, and s-pen as mouse, I enjoy my geek life in two great world, Android and Linux.
I am waiting for note 10.1 2015,
64 bits computation
Multitasking perfectly implemented ( note4 already showed it)
flawless bluetooth connection
metal and slim frame
13M camera.
These are what I expect.
They should just update the software on the 2014 and we should be good but Sammy takes waaaaaay too long.
The screen still blows me away. I've owned a crapload of tablets and nothing else is really in it's class when you consider the usefulness of the SPen on something this size.
Unfortunately, Samsung is just awful with software, so a decent newer ROM is probably as good as it gets. I don't see anything out there I'd rather have.

Has there been any rumors for when we will get Lollipop?
Before the 2016 election.
http://www.techradar.com/news/mobil...spotted-in-samsung-s-own-app-listings-1270810
Waiting for this to be released. I skipped 2014 version and still on the first generation. But its too sluggish these days,,,,, Need a replacement soon.
So far, so good. Been using it for around 6 months. I have the WiFi version, which I will sell soon and get me an LTE version.
I am very happy with it. Owning an iPad Air also, make me think that the iPad is only for my wife and some fun games. Nothing else.
On the other hand, the Note has been proven a beast of a tablet. I hook it up with a BT mouse & keyboard, use Screen Mirroring to my TV and I have a nice laptop
Only thing that bothers me, is the somewhat laggy scrolling through the home pages. Hope it wont be like that with the LTE version.

I think Samsung are stepping-back and re-evaluating their products. They got killed on Galaxy S5 and having way too many Tab lines last year. I don't expect a new Note 10.1 until they can either put an 810 or their own 64bit chip in it. It will have their new look per the alpha and Note 4 lines (I immediately covered my 2014 Note 10.1 with a case, that fake stitching slippery plastic back is awful). I think we may see the new Note 10.1 (2015) around when the Tab Pro and Note 12.2 came out last year (1st quarter).
It is still cheaper to buy a Galaxy note 10.1 2014?
Bought the 2014 edition from dustinhome in norway for around $200 couple of weeks ago. was a great buy and comming from the 2012 edition its a decent upgrade.
(i know its a somewhat old thread. but i love this thing)

Define fine, one of the primary reasons to buy this tablet was/is the proper use of its size (multi-window) and the S-pen. And while S-pen support in AOSP is kind of good, multi-window support (which IMO is even bigger deal, in all tablets actually) is nowhere to be found.
I'm with you, AOSP is better than any OEM rom, but AOSP mostly cares about phones, has very few (if any) tablet specific characteristics...

Thanks for the heads up . I will probably try it in the following days ...
I never really liked multiwindow, so I'm fine with AOSP, multi-window always got me to windows that were too small for me, but that might be my eyesight...
To bad the build quality is junk. My display ribbon came loose a few times now and I decided to leave it at home now.

Split-Screen basically splits the screen into two 7-inch screens, most phones (for example) are way less than that. Also the best use that I've found for it is to merely "minimize" a window. That's especially useful if it something that can't properly run in the background like youtube, so I have youtube playing, doing my thing and if I listen something that may need my attention then I simply drag the "minimized" youtube down. One last use is that when an app refers to another the original is not "closed". For example my file manager points to a doc file, when I press to open, it opens on a split screen (almost like on a PC), basically letting me to choose on whether I'd "maximize" it (all the while the file browser is still open) or "minimize" it for later use. This "omni-presence" of windows makes things much faster and direct to me than simply using the recents panel (alt+tab equivalent), although it has its issues too.
Of course the above cannot be done with "drawable" windows (like the ones that exist in AOSP roms) or the ones that can be "drawn" by the S-pen in TW roms. Like you I find them useless as those mini-windows are way too small for proper interaction.
To sum up, multi-window (mostly of the split-screen variety) is an acquired taste. For the first few months I never used it, but once it becomes part of one's "work flow" it's hard to go back. In fact lack of (proper) split-screen is what has kept me away from AOSP for this device. Every single of my devices (other than Note tablet) have been using AOSP before long...

Is this still worth picking up? I see no 10.1 2015 or 2016 on the horizon. I played with the Tab A with s-pen and while I liked the size and features the screen is a big disappointment. Having a note 5 I guess you just get used to a clear screen. I see that 5.1.1 is out and hoping for good reviews and better battery life.

If you get a good deal and care for the pen I would think it's still worth it! I got mine summer last year and am mostly happy with it! There is also still very good support from devs like @joshndroid who's providing us with temasek's unofficial CM13 for the tablet. Still has some issues, but I'm confident there will be a well running CM13 for it eventually. I was also very happy with temasek's CM12.1 version for it (am considering to go back to that until some of the CM13 issues are sorted). I cannot tell you much about the stock lollipop experience, as I never really used that.
I have to say that for me the ability to run a full desktop linux on it is what makes it most useful to me.
There are now a few reasonably priced windows tablets with pen support, in particular something like the Cube i7 Stylus which is pretty interesting (I'm not talking about higher classed devices like Surface or Lenovo's Thinkpad Yogas as they play in a different price league). But you should probably be able to pick up a used Note for still much cheaper and get a very nice experience.

Will the S7 Edge kill the note 6 (or note 7)? Thoughts of a note series addict

Well, I have always disliked threads about opinions but so it is... I have been a note user for 4 years, but my wife has just broken her note 2 Lte (one of my previous notes) and I have just given her my still fairly recent note 4 (15 months old).
So I have just moved to a S7 Edge, since note 5 in not available in Italy with my phone carrier and the S7 Edge actually costed me only 139 Euros plus 5 Euro per month for 30 months.
I will not speak about its technical features, since it's obviously newer than my note 4 and it must be better in that area: I was interested in comparing the spen features with their counterpart 'fingers only' sported by the S7 Edge and I have found that they are not so bad.
So, let me make a comparison and share your opinions. Consider that I post this thread here mainly because I suppose that most of you like the spen features so as I do and that's why I am interested in your opinions and feedback.
So. let's go:
- spen air view and air scroll - missing but, to be true, that's a feature I don't need that much. The S4 used to support that features through fingers and they were removed later on;
- Snote: downloadable through galaxy apps and pretty usable.... It synced with my old notes flawlessly;
- screenshot: palm swipe, home and power button and also google now on tap... No problem for simple screenshots. You can even make a scroll screen capture and crop the image with two little buttons placed on the bottom of the page! I just miss the ability to crop the image with the spen "by hand" that is not square or rectangular only. So the features are there in the s7 edge too let's say 85%
- scrapbook; it's there too, just downloadable through galaxy apps and pretty usable as well!
- aircommand: it's missing but well, screen write is replaced by "screenshot and then edit" and by the features I have just spoken about;
- screen off memo: missing and I miss it myself. It can be replaced by the one made by Xperiacle, but it can't by triggered in any way when screen is off;
- action memo: one of the most poorly designed features by Samsung in my opinion. I have never been able to jot down an entire e-mail address in such a small screen, but that's missing, if any of you actually misses it (much more usable on a tablet);
- handwriting recognition in keyboard: missing, but can be replaced by google handwriting keyboard which is not that bad. Anyway, I don't use that feature so much.
So, I still miss the spen and sometimes I look for it with my hands when I want to browse a webpage or click some little area of the screen, but most spen features do have their counterpart 'fingers only'.
Well, I feel that the note days might be gone, at least for a mass market, and note series could be confined into an even smaller niche even for power users and for people who use their phone mainly for work purposes so as I do.
I expect someone will say:"Hey bro, but the note has a wacom digitizer!". Well, it's true, but do you actually use the spen for professional painting and exploit its sensitivity to different pressure levels? With such a small screen and such a short spen? I don't, but that's my experience.
So, if I had never owned a note before, I would say the s7 Edge is perfect, but I actually owned some note phones so.....
Any flame is welcome, on condition that it does not infringe xda rules
I think one of the main reasons why people bought their Note's in the first place, was the screen size. The second being the S-Pen.
Now that (some) phones are getting bigger, they don't really need to buy a Note, unless they want to use the pen.
For me, the advantage of the new Note over the S7 Edge, would be USB Type C and whatever the increase in battery would be.
I can live without the S-Pen and I've no interest in phone cameras. I use a proper camera.
The advantage of the S8 Edge over the new Note, for me, would be BT 5. The disadvantages might be the removal of the headphone jack.
Thanks, so spen is not something you can't give up.
The other improvements you mentioned could be obviously applied to any kind of phone.
Nevertheless, when Apple developed their first big iPhone, people said it was just a bigger iPhone and not a real phablet, while I feel the Ui of the s7 edge does make it a real phablet.
