[Q] Are there ROMs that support Ad Hoc Wifi? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The question is simple. I see lots of work arounds, eg. Bluevpn, wireless tether, etc. But No one has managed to enable ad hoc on the nexus 7. So, are there any kernels or ROMs that can utilize ad hoc for tethering? I'm sure I'm not alone with this inquiry. Much love to the community. :cyclops::cyclops:

Thanks fo the post! However, I'm looking for specific ROMs or kernels. I guess I should also mention I'm using the Evita by AT&T as the hot spot and barnacle as my work around app, my nexus is rooted and running stock. Cheers!

No Ad-Hoc Connections

I just bought the Motorola Xoom and activated at least for a month with verizon. I tried using Wireless Tether from my samsung fascinate, which works fine with my wife's IPAD, but the xoom does not show up.
Anybody knows if the motorola xoom is locked to "infrastructure" wifi and doesn't allow ad-hoc connections? Or better yet anybody has a way around it?
Mine is tethering thro my evo...not sure what's different.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Yeah me either. I know the samsung fascinate appears on my laptop as an ad-hoc connection, is the reason why i ask.
Not all tethering is created equal. Hotspots and various phones act different.
Im in the same boat with my moto droid. Adhoc is what the wifi tether app creates on my phone too. I wonder if newer phones, or other programs can create an artificial hotspot?

I'm using the built in tethering. I run CM 7
I just successfully tethered with my Nexus One (CM7)
tried the wireless tether for my evo 4g and it works.. maybe you need to update the app?
If anyone has a jailbroke iPhone and using MyWi. I'd be interested in knowing if the Xoom can connect to it.
I know it's an AdHoc connection and plan to use it when they release the wifi version of the Xoom

This is because the droid x supports infastructure mode, same with cm 7.just because you have wifi tether doesn't mean you have infastructure, only some phones have support for it .
There are ways to unlock the fascinate hotspot to be free and that supports infastructure.

Yes. apparently the only option for samsung fascinate is to hack verizon's app, heres the link for those who want to try it:

Doesn't work on my Moto Droid... I have to use the Wireless Tether app in Bluetooth mode. It'll work, for now.

Wireless Tether

Is there a way to have our Xoom connect to the wireless tether ad-hoc instead of having to uses native 3G mobile hot spot app on fascinate. I know when I had the galaxy tab someone made a wpa.supplicant (think that's how it was spelled) file to put somewhere in /system/? So it could connect to phones using wireless tether.

Only if your Xoom is Rooted can you connect to Ad Hoc after a minor hack.
Root your phone and use wireless tether 3.0
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
As everyone else as said before, the only way right now is through rooting.
Root your phone. It's easier and you can share with things other than your xoom then.

Have any of you been able to connect to an ad-hoc connection with a xoom? Most of the connections have been made through handsets that do not use ad hoc mode.

What "minor hack"?????
His phone is rooted already if hes already using the Wireless Tether App from the market.
He just needs to install the newest beta which has infrastructure mode instead of Ad-Hoc, and the Xoom will identify it without any hacks on the Xoom.

Thanks for the input, but these apps are phone specific. I'm well aware of the wireless tether apps, both for root and the experimental 3.0. I've tried just about everything out there and can't get the Xoom to see my CDMA Hero running AOSP 2.3.3. Even the bluetooth tether will not connect. My laptop sees it fine, my Xoom sees an EVO that uses wireless tether. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the old Hero...
You have used 3.0 pre 4¿ that's what works for me

Thanks again, pre 4 errors out. It does not support cdma hero. I'll b looking into settings on the Xoom now.

Wifi tether

I tried to tether with my evo using hot spot and wireless tether with no success. It works on my laptop but not on the zoom. Has anyone got it to work on zoom using evo? If so what settings?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
A friend of mine tethered off his stock evo just fine, no issues. Dont know his settings though, but since you can only select the security type, cant be much.
Works fine for me running xoom and evo unrooted. The xoom can't tell the economy from any other wifi but my second settings are just a standard named wpa2 set hotspot. Dhcp on, always in. Everyone in a while the xoom freaks out when the evo swaps between 3g and 4g but at worst in disable and re enable wifi and I'm fine. My second switches often since we don't officially have 4g in Columbus Ohio even though I have had signals most of the time since like last August.

Mine works perfectly tethered to my Evo running CM7.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Not sure if this was resolved, but I tether off of my EVO regularly, running CM7 stock.
OP, what setup are running on your EVO?
Swyped from my EVO
From what I gather, CM7 on the Evo has infrastructure mode wifi tether by default so Android devices shouldn't have any problems seeng the SSID (as opposed to Adhoc).
Also, the latest wifi tether version (direct from the code.google.com website) now does infrastructure mode, so you shouldn't have any issues as well.

I am running my 2.2 rls5 and I cannot get it to work. It seems to be a issue with the ad hoc network. I have tried several wireless heather apps including barnacle and others. Nothing works. May have to take zoom back if I cannot tether.
I tethered my XOOM to my EVO running CM7 RC4 just fine and dandy. No problems here, move along.
Im not using the Evo but the Samsung Epic.....WAY better phone, screen is 312x better, no HDMI out but the qwerty more than makes up for it.
The biggest downside I am finding is that using the FREE wifi apps, rather than the paid ones, i find it difficult to connect to my Sprint data network on the Epic with my Xoom. I am able to connect with my Epic to the Xooms network, but it only has 1gb and it costs money to go over. I have unlimited on the Epic, but I can only tether with Mac and Windows, and some odd distros of Linux that use older wifi network managers that were compatible with ad hoc networks......No luck getting the Xoom to connect the Ad Hoc only wifi hotspot that I am able to get using free third party apps.
Using the paid app works fine, but not with the app called Wifi-Tether, or Wireless Tether.

Are you using a paid tethering app, the official included tethering app, or a third party free app that requires rooting? Are you specifically using "Wireless Tether"?
If not, then its not really relevant to the OP.

[Q] Wifi Tether to DROID1

Guys,
I have tried everything including searching here on this and lots of different forums of similar interest.
I have Motorola Droid with Cyano C7 RC4 installed. its rooted obviously however i have tried almost every other apps and ways to connect my droid1 to my wifi only xoom tablet.
xoom is also rooted running tiamat kernel. i also have no luck for tethering via Bluetooth as well!
can some one help me out please??!
Hmmm... I am not rooted (yet), but have no problems with Bluetooth tether using the wireless tether app. I'm running Simply Stunning 5.2 (which is based on cyanogenmod). Did you try tethering to your OG Droid before you rooted your Xoom? There some step by step instructions on Droid-Life, did you follow something like them?
I hope this isn't a problem with the new kernel. I'm planning on rooting tomorrow and installing that same kernel.

No, he's telling u to do that on ur Droid.
Here's your problem though, the droid only does ad-hoc wireless networking. The Xoom can't see ad-hoc right now. Go do a search its well discussed. You'll need to use a bluetooth tether till there's a fix.
What he listed are steps to take on your phone to make it a wireless access point for your xoom.
After you follow those instructions you will be able to connect to the broadcasting SSID on your xoom.

I would suggest that you go to the Droid XDA forum for CM7 and ask for help there. Someone on that forum will be able to help you..

It's pretty well understood that the OG Droid (aka Droid 1) can only support ad-hoc wifi tethering. The Xoom doesn't support ad-hoc (at least not yet). So for now the only day to tether is via Bluetooth. You need the wireless tether app set to Bluetooth. Then once you pair the Droid and the Xoom tethering works fine, although it is a little slower (I normally get about 750kbs best case).

Sounds like a separate problem. But either way your Droid will only do ad-hoc networking and WiFi tether probably won't work...

WIFI Tether Fix for CM9 and CM10 on NS4G

Does someone have the current WIFI tether zip file for CM9 and CM10 on the Nexus S 4G?
Why would you need that when both of them support WiFi tethering natively ? Just go to settings under " more" it right there along with NFC & 4g options you will see tethering & portable hotspot

I have not had luck with any tethering app OR native tethering on any JB ROM.
Also, I've never used a ROM (GB, ICS, or JB) that keeps 4G when using native tethering. Only 3G (which is slower than dial-up for me)
I'd like to have a fix for this as well as I use my phone for my home internet.
I keep a backup of stock rooted ICS to switch to from JB when I get home. What a hassle...
I've seen plenty of people posting that are in my same situation.
Here is the link to the app's download page: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I have the exact same problem. I couldn't get 4G tethering to work on Gingerbread, it works great on ICS and now I'm back to not having it on JB.

I know when I use Cyanogenmod 9 and 10 and turn on the wifi tether app, it showed up as a error but when I used AOKP, it worked flawlessly.
I was just looking for the same thing earlier today! I actually believed that it wasn't possible to have a 4G wifi tether hotspot until a few days ago, because every time I'd tried it (ICS & JB), I'd be knocked down to 3G lol same thing happens with usb tethering too.
on the bright side, 4G tethering works for me on PDANet and through native bluetooth tethering (which I used to use with my macbook pro) and android wifi tether (after a tweak in the settings)
now that the free version of PDANet sucks and I sold my MBP and am back to a bluetooth-less PC, a fix or something would be great

I even tell CyanogenMod on their Facebook page that it does not work and yet they do not respond.
I have the same issue with any jb rom. Are you guys on sprint as well? I saw another post where the guy said this happens with sprint users and to use foxfi, pdanet, or easytether to get 4g tethering. This worked for me with ics roms but not jb. Whenever I try to tether with a jb rom, I lose my data connection completely.

I too was having a wifi tethering issue, although mine was worse, I was losing all data connection when I attempted to activate the hotspot, however, when I switched over to this AOSP ROM (http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...aosp-jellybean-v2-2-jro03l-8-13-12-a.html#anb) over on AndroidCentral, my wifi tether began working. It initially kicks me off 4g, but in certain parts of my home (the restroom to be specific), I can get it to kick over to tethering on 4g, but I just need to be patient. There is also a tethering fix zip somewhere in that thread, but I don't know if it'd work on either CM9 or 10.
I had this same problem on CM9 (WIFI or USB tethering didn't work). I figured out that it happened when I would flash the Trinity Kernel. If I used the kernel that came with the ROM it worked fine. Unfortunately I can't speak for the 4g because I don't live in a 4g area. Now that I've flashed CM10 I've used Air Kernel and I haven't lost my native tethering capapbility.
