Hide navigation bar when typing? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Is there a way to hide the navigation bar when typing, whether rooted/custom roms or stock? When typing quickly in landscape (with swiftkey) I keep pushing home by accident.
Thanks.

Team EOS just released a stable rom that allows you to hide the navigation bars (holding the power button). It works great but I found using gmd gesture control (recommended in a similar thread) to be much more effective and easy to use. It has lots more options than just hiding the navigation bars. With all the new and programmable gestures I really am beginning to use my nexus differently. Even though it takes a little getting used to.

hiding is easy, but its kind of tiring to do if its just for typing a sentence or two. if youre in for fullscreen browsing it is an option most roms have. i use it mostly for playing games.
another option is phoneUI, which surprisingly works pretty neat, i also like the notificationdropdown better. it makes way in landscape orientation just like on your phone.
another take would be to blow up the keyboard, maybe your fingers like it better. pa can individually change apps, even keyboards to any size or form you want.
yet another option would be the phoneUI keyboard, this is what i use and i find it better to type on. i use it with systemUI set to tabUI so i dont get these fat bottons down there anyway.

Thanks a lot guys, I'm completely stock at the moment but will be rooting soon, especially with this. Just got to sort through which rom I want!
@toid, that looks brilliant, would like to have those other gestures too. Thanks!

So I've rooted now and got the GMD Gestures, loving them! Will be installing Paranoid once it's updated to 4.1.2

Nothing special for me...
Some screenshots would be nice.
Edit: Wow, it's actually pretty decent. If you can get past the fact the 'vibrate on press' doesn't work. I love that feature. Anyway, it's VERY responsive and deals with accidental presses very well. It has very cool sounds to go with it (tappity tap...) In terms of looks, it's average.

I still love the HTC IME Keyboard..
Ooohh, you can get that skin for Smart Keyboard.
Edit: I changed my mind about this keyboard, the keys aren't big enough. It is a pain.

I'm staying with the moded HTC_IME from Eminence v1.2
I'm staying with its default keypad. I prefer the multi-tap set-up as I am having difficulty pressing the right key on the querty keyboard.

but this is for 2.2 systems, so I'm not sure if you can use it.

[TIP] Move your keyboard to the bottom

Hello
I was making one application that would resemble more Android-like design: keyboard on the bottom, the main soft keys above it.
Well that is not possible to do both system-wide, but one half of that is. To move your keyboard to the total bottom of the screen, just edit registry:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip:
DefaultMenuBarHeight=dword:0
MenuBarHeight=dword:0
what happens after reboot is this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Advantages? Extra 64px (on WM6.5.3 and similar) of screen, no useless soft keys in these occasions.
Now, how do you hide the keyboard? Just, as on Android, press BACK key (on HD2 tested, TP2 and TD2 should work the same I suppose, but make backup first ).
Regards, OndraSter
Update: it seems that it doesn't work on all ROMs. I was using CRACIN's HD2 ROM, where it worked. I now flashed GTX Energy ROM and it doesn't work. Weird.
There is no DefaultMenuBarHeight in Sip there is only MenuBarHeight.
I'm using htc touch2. How can i do this? Thanks
This is dependant on the ROM and SIP itself. Try changing the MenuBarHeight itself if it isn't enough.
Btw, this won't work with any newer position fix - like ultrashot's uTask, since it tries to fix the keyboard too.
Heyi tried to change the MenuBarHeight and it was okey then but pressing back button make me go to the homescreen so it isn't for me. Thanks anyway dude great job.
Appearantly Touch 2 works different than Leo
You're right !
Having disabled Utask's position fix feature, I was able to move the SIP vertical position to anywhere I wanted !
The DefaultMenuBarHeight value can be manually added (I did), provided it has any actual effect.
Unfortunately, the Back button generally applies to the current app rather than to the keyboard, that sometimes even stays open (it actually depends on the app ! ), so it can't be used straight on.
But there are a lot of alternatives, such as remapping a hardware key with AEButton plus (now freeware), for instance.
This nice trick should probably be best used with a SIP featuring it's own closing button, such as FingerKeyboard (though it already has an option to overlap the softkeybar in landscape mode, and since it's fully customizable, you should be able to setup the vertical offset in portrait too, regardless of the actual registry values).

Nav bar size change

Hi all, Loving my Nexus so far but would like to change the size of the Nav bar, there is no need for it to be so big!
I am running AOKP on my Galaxy Nexus and it has easy options to change the nav bar size.
Does anyone know of a way to change it on the Nexus 7? I am happy to flash a zip if thats what is nessary but I dont really want to flash a whole new rom.. Any help appreciated!
you could do what im doing, waiting it out until a full blown, feature filled AOKP JB ROM comes out. until then, im just gonna deal with it :/ its not so bad

Just change the DPI. Bonus...get tablet UI!
I'm running 160 with no issues on anything.
Yeah think I will wait till AOKP comes out.
Hey Ace! Just a heads up in case you didnt know you can get Tablet UI without touching the DPI settings.
Thing is changing the DPI to 160 causes a lot of apps to resize wrong and the text is tiny. In the devs section there is a patch that enables Tablet UI without changing DPI. Its works great, I recommend it!

I would like to know this too. I'm using glazed which I like but I want to increase the bar sizes both navigation and status.
If its just a tweak in a file somewhere it would be nice. Anyone know?
I use Go Launcher and disable it. Anything I want to see on the home screen I just add a widget.

[Q] How to Hide Soft Navigation Keys

Just became an owner of the new Nexus 7. The soft navigation keys that are part of the OS take so much screen real estate.
Is there a way to hide/unhide them?
Is there a specific rom or launcher that has that option?
Thanks.
Team eos has this option. You could permanently disable them and use LMNT. Which are like the browser quick nav buttons.

I assume the blue part of your image is what you refering to as lmnt? Can it be recalled on demand and hidden when not needed?
I also see the soft keys on the bottom of your image. They can be disbled in this rom, right? А

Yes you swipe from the left or right to draw them out. And yes team eos had the ability in the power menu selecting "system bars mode" will disable/enable them.

I only found HideBar by Pieter Pareit; are we talking about the same app?
Has anyone developed a way to customize the bottom System Bar? Add / remove icons?

Sort of ... but its better to have it built into the ROM then using an app.
Um yeah? Its called every ROM that uses aokp or Cm10 framework LOL.
Are you for real? Its hardly noticeable, it uses very minimal real estate and hides itself when it needs it (the real estate) the most.

I personally use GMD GestureControl. It allows you to set various multitouch/singletouch gestures. I have it set up so that 4 finger swipe up hides the status bar and the softkeys. In addition, 4/5 finger pinch closes current app (emulates home button), 4/5 fingers left or right scroll through recent apps (these gestures are stolen from iPad)

Full screen Apps - Thought this might be a worthwhile thread

Hey,
So Hope everyone is enjoying their new Z3C, I know I am.
As a first time on-screen key user, the one thing that slightly grates on me is the way the nav bar takes up screen real estate in certain apps. So thought maybe (I'm going out on a limb here and assuming Im not the only one with that mentality) would be useful to compile a list of apps (whether they're games, or simply alternative versions of sms, browser apps) that are full screen. I.e. they support and use the 'Immersive mode' without the need for root.
Browser wise, my contribution is Javelin, which is ALMOST as fast as Chrome, but is extremely elegant and offers full screen, (via transparent nav buttons) which just looks SO much better.
Anyone else? I appreciate you can get any app to be full screen with root tactics..........but still.
Only app I've noticed so far is Reddit Sync with ads removed uses the transparent nav bar and it is beautiful.
Agreed, full immersive mode is the way to go. The on-screen nav buttons are an eyesore, IMO. I can't wait to achieve root (without unlocking the bootloader) so I can apply it to all my most used apps which look far nicer in full immersive mode.

THANKS for mentioning Javelin! I've searched for a good fullscreen browser and it seems this is just what I was looking for.
Regarding the topic - for those of you who don't know it already I can recommend Talon. It's a gorgeous twitter client that can be tweaked in every possible way.
Guys,
I expect you guys know but there is an immersive mode app that i have been using, it doesnt require root and you can even toggle it on and off from the notification bar (there is a setting to enable this).
The only issue is that for apps where you want or need to use a keyboard it doesnt work when active, though you can disable, enter text and re-enable afterwards. You can even toggle it on for the home screen.
Worked well when I was experimenting with it.

I'm using All in One Gestures: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures to achieve full immersive mode right now and it's working pretty good, in addition to having a host of other useful shortcuts as well.

It's a nice temporary solution until a locked BL root exploit is discovered.
