Windows Phone 8 Market - Windows Phone 8 General

So i had everyphone known to man. and i recently played with the lumia 900 which i found very different and so fast! and its just a single core phone. now i always loved nokia phones. but i am so spoiled with androids market place and every app at my finger tips. if windows market place has the apps i want there very slimmed down versions and pretty useless. i have my sights set on a lumia 920 or a note 2. i also have a S3i9300 do you think windows phone 8 with bring good working apps to the phone???? what is the use of having a smartphone without apps.?

Native coding, there will be a ton of apps. Ports should be faster and easier, especially for games.

iPhone4 jailbreaked vs Nexus-S ?

If you were upgrading to a new phone tomorrow. Would it be the sexy Nexus-S, with the beautiful Super AMOLED screen and stock Android, or a jailbreaked iPhone running custom themes and apps ?
I prefer Android lately, I have the EVO rooted with CM 6.1 and it is pretty darn cool. But my Brother currently has a 2yr old iPhone3G, and it is flaky and running like poo lately, he wants a new phone this week. I told him about the Nexus-S, and he is not to sure about going Android yet.
He said there are some cool features with a jailbroke iPhone 4 ? He likes the thinness of the new iPhone and great battery life, plus the screen res is amazing. To me the screen is too small for a cool smart phone, and no widgets blows, but that's what jailbreaking is for I guess.

Nexus S... Don't make a bad decision.
Is this really a question? The Nexus S by far.
iPhone 4 owners will say "your Nexus S don't even support 720p recording"
i'm not going to at&t
I had an iPhone 3GS jailbroken and decked out the whole shebang. It was "nice". Then got BORED of it and bought the Nexus One. You can only do so much on an iPhone.
Nexus S here I come!
wait a month and get the iphone on verizon.

Are you reading more random things on the internet again and believing them? It's almost the exact same hardware as the Galaxy S. Don't tell me they changed the board to have lesser bandwidth just for the Nexus S.

That's from an Android developer ( http://twitter.com/dnaltews ), I wouldn't call it "random"
dnaltews @supercurio clock rate limitation of the SoC. Galaxy uses an external image processing part as a work around. Not enough PCB space in N.S.

We'll see soon enough. I remember something similar being said about the N1, though I can't find it because all I can find is links on the 720p fix for the N1.
Bumping an old thread, but anyone still spotty on this? I've been contemplating after getting my AT&T Nexus S and comparing it to the iPhone 4, but its seems like other than a few more games and larger storage, I actually am siding with the Nexus S.
there is no point getting the IP4, SNS is so much better in every way
specially SAMOLED
Android Market
All the apps you can ever dream of
not locked to itunes
you can sync and do anything you like with the phone
you can play any media file you want, not locked to itunes
etc...
and the list just goes on and on

Yes and I agree. I had my SNS listed but removed it. The only thing that's a plus for me with the iPhone at this point is its camera is superior. But ive been asking myself if loosing all that I like in android for a camera on a phone. Battery life used to be a big one too but id put the SNS at 90% of what the iPhone's battery can hold. As far as apps, there's a lot of fluff in the market thanks to wallpapers and ringtones being considered apps. However, of all the apps that i have on my iPhone, id only really miss Tiny Wings and PvZ. Admittedly though, I have an iPad 2 that will hold all of those.
Regardless of apps. Even though Android Market doesn't have the same number of apps. Everything you're looking for is available. If a particular app is paid, you don't have to pay for it, instead you can go for a alternative free version.
Remember, quality of apps > quantity. And open market no restrictions
Almost every app that I want is here. Alternative keyboard / desktops are so much better.
ESPECIALLY when it comes to development. Rooting/flashing ROMs > jailbreak.
Yes. i was running the i9023 odin on my 9020A and it was flawless. good battery life and never had a force close on anything other than MIUI music. However, i couldn't get certain market apps, like paypal and ringlert. Any other suggestions for max battery life ROMs? currently on NSCOLLAB current version.

Hm. what carrier are you using? Try market enabler, you should be able to get those apps.
Max battery tips (hopefully j0hnz wont come here and troll me on the battery topic again):
- Use DARK Wallpapers (Super AMOLED doesn't use power when displaying black)
Various applications such as "XDA" have a skin to theme it black. Check settings for apps you use to see if there's a dark skin of it available.
- Brightness set to 0% (Maybe its too low for you, but I like it.. I find 0% to be still very bright).

Did I make the right choice

For a few days I have been running an iphone 4 along side the Galaxy S2.
One of them had to go...
I was convinced at first that the Iphone was the better of the two.
Then I began to explore the full capacity of the SGS2.
OK the market may not be as good or vast and full of the quality that the appstore has but its really beginning to get there, some of my favourite apps are beginning to show up on the Android Marketplace now.
But the clincher for me has to be the back button, larger screen, the fantastic homescreens, the tweaking and this place...
I accept the sound quality, screen dpi and market are not as good, but I was finding myself having to jailbreak my iphone just to enable pull down settings and reminders, animated backdrops, better sms, mark all as read email, better lock screen, clock widget on homescreen, better sounds, all this that comes as standard on the SGS2, what was I doing, I am obviously not an IOS compatible.
So Hopefully my final decision is going to be correct as my Iphone 4 is up for sale...thanks for all you advice and help
The exact same situation with me!!
Had to leave the legendary iphone 4 to join the extraordinary world of SGS II!!
Android rocks!!
I'm. Sure its the right choice. The only plus of the iphone I'm seeing is it has better battery life but if that doesn't bother you then you're golden.

I too was in the same boat. As a smartphone, any android phone is miles better than an iPhone - and in the case of the SGS2 vs iPhone 4, the former is doubly better since it was designed to compete with the iPhone 5.
However, as an entertainment and gaming experience, the iOS devices are absolutely miles ahead thanks to a wonderfully diverse appstore. So many talented artists are expressing themselves in wonderful ways that can't be fathomed on any other platform. My overall experience of the iPhone 4 was blissful thanks mainly to these apps and games - and i was really missing that quite badly.
So i went out and bought a cheap second-hand iPod touch 4 and am now enjoying the best of both worlds - and not missing it's phone part at all!
IMO the best gadgetry experience one can have is an SGS2 + iPad 2

[Q] Atrix 4g vs Nokia Lumia 900

I came to Android about a year ago from iOS. As an Android noob, I found it amazing the capability 3rd party launchers provided. I went from launchers to rooting, rooting to unlocking bootloaders, and lately I've been flashing roms. I'm currently using joker cm9 and I love it, but I am thinking about jumping ship and trying out the Nokia Lumia 900. I feel like my Android experience has reached it's maximum potential. What do fellow Android users think about Windows Phone and specifically the Nokia Lumia 900 when compared to the Atrix 4g?
Beautiful device, but the software leaves a lot to be desired, IMHO, it has the worst bits of Android and iOS put together into one. The only reason I still bother using a Windows machine is because every game in the market requires DirectX, but the whole direction that Microsoft is taking it's platform is pretty laughable to me.
Yeah, performance wise, wp7 is nice, but albeit a little too basic, not that much to do as far as customization is concerned and the lack of apps, put the final nail in the coffin so to speak. Customization is what makes android so great. You can make it your own, even if 5,000 others have the same device. To me, wp7 still has a ways to go, before it can trump android.
#Sent from my God given Atrix 4G
Try windows phone 7 and if you like it keep it, if you don't exchange it.
I had a Samsung Focus that I got about two weeks after its release. I absolutely hated how boring WP7 OS was. There were no apps worth installing and customization was nowhere to be found. It is over simplistic in too many ways. The media player doesn't even have an equalizer.

This is making me reconsider my decision to leave Android. Altough I do have a pair of $120 Bose headphones that produce a strong bass so I may not need an equalizer
I have phones on both os'. I like both os'. The main problem with wp7 is the lack of Apps. And even if there is an app on both the android app tends to be more functional. I find the media player on wp7 to be superior tho. But day to day I keep my ATRIX.
I'm just going to start with that it is always going to end up being personal preference. You can have 99 out of a 100 people here tell you Android is better but at the end of the day, you can end up being one of those 1 out of a 100 people who prefer the WP OS.
Second, at the end of your inquiry you ask about the Lumia 900 compared to the Atrix specifically. In terms of software the Lumia will offer more stability and a more simplified UI at the cost of less customization and 3rd party offerings (basically, it's personal preference). With the introduction of WP7.5 Mango, functionality is coming closer together but still dependent on preference (for example, Google Docs vs Microsoft Office, etc)
In the case of hardware, the Lumia has a superior camera, better build quality, larger screen, and LTE. The Atrix has a higher pixel density but it's Pentile, it has a dual-core processor but WP7 runs great on single-core, so probably the only thing the Atrix has over the Lumia in terms of hardware is the better battery.
It may seem that I am favoring WP7 here but I am one of the 99 out of a 100 that prefers Android. So, my advice is:
If you're going to try a WP7 device, the Lumia 900 is the device to try.

I think windows phone looks nice. Customization is overrated. Do you spend hours customizing the icons, themes, etc. on your desktop PC? Or are you like most people and just change the wallpaper and move programs around? WP7 doesn't need customization because the live tiles are constantly changing. iOS is boring because it's static, but not because it lacks customization. WP7 looks like it's made for adults and iOS looks like it's made for little kids. Android is stuck somewhere in the middle. But I agree with you that the low resolution and single core processor is garbage.
Not trying to be disrespectful to the WP7/Nokia owners here but comparing an Atrix 4G to a Nokia Lumia is like comparing gold to charcoal. Although both have their own uses, they are totally different.
Android= feature rich, dual core capability, unlimited tweaking and improvement, open source and we are getting official ICS + linux.
Windows Phone 7= Amazingly fast due to its simple and minimilastic user interface, apps may load faster compared to Gingerbread but ICS will change this fact soon and that is all that Windows Phone 7 has. (The truth is i don't like tiles....it makes no sense to me and i also don't like the fact that you have to scroll down for ages in order to access an app in the menu).
Atrix 4g= Dual core, Tegra 2 processor, 1 gig of ram, lapdock, webtop, etc...
Nokia Lumia 900= Deadma5 doing the music of a of 2d holograms that Nokia advertises as 4d, single core, 512 mb Ram?, no webtop, lapdock, no innovation at all...... plus you don't have all the facilities that android will give you due to WP7 not being open source.
In the end, if you like the nokia phone better and if you enjoy using it more, you should definitely get it but personally, i would always go for the Atrix 4G.

Disagree with you in a couple of points:
1) dual core really doesn't matter (well not in this case), since the Atrix dual core isn't that good and WP7 runs perfectly smooth on a single core.
2) The Lapdock is a big pile of ____! Stock of course. The Linux ones are much better, but still don't expect anything amazing. After all you are using a phone to run it. However it is a nice addition that other phones can't do. So something is better nothing
3) the Gig of RAM really doesn't matter in WP7 due to the way it multi task (Androids way is superior if you're a power user, in my opinion).
4) Open source is not a valid point here, we have to wait till developers make it work on our device and this takes a while (if it ever does come). We got to remember developers don't owe us anything and they don't have to work on it if they don't wish to.
If you're worried about updates you are better off with WP7, Microsoft has committed to bringing timely updates to the devices and they haven't fail. And not to knock on our developers, I honestly am grateful and know they have been working hard but to date we don't have a stable ICS ROM and if I'm not mistaking the Source Code was release in early December. So sorry but Open Source shouldn't be given as a point to the Atrix.
5) Innovation, true Nokia's 900 doesn't have much innovation to it seeing as its just a reuse N9 body. But its still a very sexy device. Plus it has LTE
Not to mention that the Atrix isn't so innovative either, the only thing it has going for it was the Lapdock and that it was the first Dual Core phone to hit the US. Which does feel a bit rush to be honest.
Conclusion: I love my Atrix (even though it might not sound like it) and I wouldn't trade it for a WP7 (I actually have two) but that's because of my specific uses for it. WP7 is also lacking as a mobile OS (to my needs) and the app selection just isn't there. However the WP7 isn't a bad OS just takes a bit of getting use to. And who knows you might just enjoy it, honestly you just have to try it yourself. Don't make judgements off of what others think about it. Just dive into the water
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
Well I made my decision. I just ordered the Galaxy Nexus from Amazon wireless for 100$ It should be here in 2 days. I love my Atrix but I have a cracked screen so it was time for an upgrade. The Galaxy Nexus might be the last Android phone I ever own. In a year or two I will most likely switch to Windows Phone. By that time, they should have high def, dual core devices that actually have EQUALIZERS! Still think Metro UI is beautiful.

To each their own. Android is by far the most customizable OS of the 3. This is what sets it apart from the other two. As you said, WP7 lacks apps/functionality, and iOS is simply crap. Wonder what Apple will try and sue over next.... They sure as hell can't be that 'innovative' company they were once known for.... now all they do is sue anyone who threatens to take #1 spot in the market.

Quick answer:
iPhone = like living in jail
Galaxy S3 = freedom
I am wondering...how come people fight desperately for freedom (see numerous wars on earth) but willing to be put in "jail" by using iPhone?
I do not get it?
I think people are giving the OP a hard time for no reason, he's not saying Iphone is better or that he prefers it. He just wants to know if it has anything that the S3 doesnt, it's a simple question if you have used both devices.
The S3 is definitely more powerful in terms of hardware, but how useful that is in normal day to day use is open to debate. It's also a lot more customizable as a result of running Android.
In Apple's favour, the iphone is very simple to use but that comes at the expense of flexibility. It's also a lot better supported in terms of operating system updates than any Android-based manufacturer has managed to date.

end rant
The only advantage of Apple iPhone is that a baboon could use it. In fact I see baboons using iPhones every day.
On an of topic but related note, if the baboon at work keeps telling me to buy an iPhone because of all the great things it can do (he only ever mentions things Android can do) I may end up feeding him to a lion. I don't think the baboon has even used an Android before, he just assumes it can't be very good because it's not by Apple.

Yeah that sums it up :highfive:
Actually iPhones are far simpler to use.
Their bodymass-to-size ratio is higher so they fly far more stable than the S3 which tends to rotate due to the sheer size of it's front side.
This makes it easier to throw the iPhone out of the window without actually hitting it's glass which would be costing you even more in terms of repair and frustration.
Furthermore their mentioned compact body and higher weight allows to throw it further than any other phone.
In conclusion, this makes it the perfect device to throw out of your window before you go and buy an Android phone.
However.... I do doubt it counts as an advantage in a comparison video.

I haven't had that particular device but I have used WP7 and its really not that bad. I like the minimalistic interface. The lack of apps is what made me go back to Android. This was back in the HTC Trophy days so a lot has probably changed since.

Your asking people that own one of the best android phones if they would recommend giving it up for a windows based phablet?
Something like this is ALWAYS personal opinion. Do you want a bigger screen and windows? It isn't running the 41MP pureview camera, so that doesn't really make much difference.
I meant to say, is it a decent choice as far as smart phones are compared. 21mp, 6" screen and full 1080p ips and expandable memory is what I'm looking at. I'm just tired of flashed and wiping and starting all oover. Just wanna stick with one system and the customizations and force closures ate really annoying. The bugs are my biggest issue with android which is why I think I kinda wanna changeover.

Because the lacking of apps and such? I'm sure I'll miss the vipermod, t0rren* dls, and those. I saw you can on Windows but very limited.

I doubt that the biggest issue with Android is the bugs. It is more likely the ability to change ROMs for something "better" - and it can be both a blessing and a curse. What's wrong with Stock LG ROM or debloated LG roms? With a few modifications you have the most stable, fluid and snappy ROM out there.
Going the WP way is going to be quite difficult for anyone coming from Android due to the smaller supply of apps and the lack of ability to change software and as previously mentioned that phone is just huge (or I have small hands). In the end, I wouldn't want to stand in your way of getting a new phone. Each ones need is different and if you feel the need for that phone, then go for it.
Smartphones are similar in specs nowadays, software and apps are all that matter - oh, and looks.
Yeah it's big but I love huge screens. Maybe I need to slow down and realize 6" and 2mp camera is not really enough to switch. I appreciate the honesty ppl.

Android all the way. This comes from a guy who loves Windows (on a pc). The beautiful thing about Android is the customization, screen and design options, and versatility. IPhone tells you what you can do with your phone and how big it's screen should be. Windows tried getting in and while they are not bad phones, either ios or Windows . But at the end of the day, how are you going to say my phone is better or cooler than yours? This alone I feel is what drives Android and its community. Its a conversation starter, a friend maker, a extension of your personality. It can be whatever you want it to be, as long as we keep devs happy and keep flashing there stuff and not complaining. Me and my buddy got in a shouting match in a bar one night over which is better. IPhone or Android. It almost ended with fists lol. No one can tell you which is better they can only tell you why they think its better.

Will you see,the input it's great and helps A lot. But in reality,I do a lot flashing and mods to my phone. Viper mod, trying different Roms (flex Rom,aeon v3, aokp) and using Gravitybox to change how it all looks in appeal. Honestly I work a lot and I tend to block out these friends I got as far as phones go. Personally I wanna have limits lol. Just a great performing phone and be done with that as I buy and trade phones way to often.

I'd say no, but I find wp8 very inefficient. Having all my apps in a list not a grid and having to swipe a bunch where on android it only takes a tap just seems that way to me. It is nice looking and easy to use, but it is not as full fledged as android.

Never tried wp, but I like new shiny things and with Android you can change the look, feel and performance of your phone all the time. I have trouble keeping a phone for a year without getting bored with it, but I can just change the ROM and it feels like new again. I wouldn't leave Android even if someone paid me to.

Sooooo I managed to pick up a new 128gb windows surface tablet with accesories at Staples a few nights ago for literally $200. I paid about 20%of what it should have cost for everything I got. I love windows on my PC and I've been primarily an Android guy on my phones minus a couple drunken stoopers where I went to apple for a few months. I tried and tried to make myself enjoy the experience of windows mobile because of the cheap investment I managed to get in the tablet. All said and done, I just couldn't do it and I returned everything I had scored such a ridiculous deal on because it wasn't even worth the $200 to me that I had spent on it. Apps were just dismal at best and I just wasn't I interested in learning a new OS again. Android just always works, it has great Dev support, Google is spot on and committed to making the entire ecosystem better and above all it is just dependable. Windows belongs on a PC, Android belongs on my mobile devices. That's just how it needs to remain......

So try wp
Api of this os has no access to sms or mms
You want blacklist app for wp ? No way!
I dont need such castrated os.
Don't hate me but if the iPhone 6 has at least a 5 inch screen, I might be looking to switch back. As for wp, would only consider it when they get more apps. As for now, I think the G2 delivers everything except a micro sd card slot...everything just works out of the box.

+2 android is indeed becoming boring... And whatever daily apps we use are available in windows. M waiting for a 5 inch wp with same specification as lumia 1520. I will make a switch.

I'd stick with the G2.
WP8 has significantly less apps, the battery life isn't all that stellar, and while it is super smooth and polished (visually), I wouldn't leave Android, Knock-On, QuickRemote and other stuff I gotten used to over the years.
But that's just me. if you want a solid phone that will work out of the box, is super easy and ergonomically good, go for WP8. But as soon as you find some visual or performance issues that you cannot rectify, you will be coming back to Android
