If iPhone can give this kind of battery life, why can't the GS3? - Galaxy S III General

So I did an extensive test on my gf's new iP5. (ended up getting 8.5 hours of 'awake' time usage)
Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.

Usage (2nd full day of usage):
- LTE on all day, BT on, no WiFi at all
- Brightness set to manual at ~ 20% brightness (still quite viewable during the day though. gotta love IPS LCD displays.)
- A few videos, use of camera, panoramic shots, heavy LTE browsing including data intensive sites like TheVerge, Engadget, other tech blogs. No gaming, and phone calls that added up to ~10 minutes total
- iP5 is equipped with a 1424 mAh battery. 8.5 hours of usage for an LTE device is tremendously awesome in my book.
- I'm a proud Verizon Galaxy Nexus owner, btw. And no, I would never replace the gnexus for the paltry 4.0 inch iP5 haha. I prefer productivity driven OS :fingers-crossed:

I was wondering the same thing. I read am article a few days back however on how its extremely impressive that Apple has made all their components so very energy efficient. It is actually quite impressive, and JUST IMAGINE the battery life we could get if Samsung did the same!!

It's the more advanced software in Android that sucks the life out of the battery. Also even though Android is mso much better as and OS then Apple it is a mess how it is written. It is just not battery optimize at all.

I'm really looking forward to the Razr HD Maxx from Googorola. If that phone can do 7 hours of on-screen usage w/ LTE on all day I will run and buy one asap lol.

Wow!! That is seriously impressive.
Is it because our S3 has more pixel to process or something?
But 8.5 hours of screentime is almost impossible in S3..even with WiFi and Data off all the time...
I know background processing in Android kinda sucks the juice out of battery..but most of the background jobs are uselss and are without user conscious...\\
Android has lots to catch up in this department

I think Google is aware of power consumption on Android devices, which is why I like the new Razr line.
I spoke with a Google Maps engineer and they're concerned about battery consumption usage while using that app. He is saying that they're trying to free up clutter in Google Maps.
oh and the Apple Maps was atrocious in terms of battery life. I enabled 3D viewing mode and panned around for a few minutes. I lost 5% battery life in that time period. I was NOT impressed.

actual on-screen time, afaik. (it means 'awake' time)
i set the device so it never locks itself automatically, so the screen was on the entire day mostly.
there are caveat's however, as you can listen to music and have screen off and that will be considered as 'usage.' I made sure I did not do this during my testing.

iPhone is designed from ground up to give as good a battery life as possible and a smooth UI. It is a design philosophy. Android on the other hand is designed for realtime multitasking, battery life and UI smoothness be damned. That's why our 2100 mah SGS3 has worse battery life than a 1400 mah iPhone and the animations are patchy all over despite having a stronger CPU and GPU. There's nothing that can be done about it other than rewrite Android from scratch.

I didn't leave the screen on and keep it like that all day.
I used it a good amount. heavy LTE browsing, viewed some trailers, push email, facebook, and texting throughout the day sprinkled with some camera usage and actively using the panoramic feature. Did a small bit of Apple Maps but that app was garbage. Completely kills battery life.

Where is the screen on time at? That just says usage which would represent total awake time not just screen time. I have got close to 8 hours awake time before with 5 hours screen on time. Here is a screenshot of what i am trying to ask. Notice the difference in awake vs screen time.
Not tying to say that you didn't get 8 hours. Jus5 trying to figure out if we are comparing apples to apples rolleyes with the term 'usage'.
Edit: Nevermind see that you and others beat me to this question and answer.

Can't compare a Nissan GTR to a Prius.

Yes, but Engadget reckon the S3 can last a full day with intensive use. Why should we be getting excited again?

I've got a few mates with the 5 and none of them are reporting biblical battery endurance, and they would because we banter about this stuff constantly so to be frank I do not even come close to believing you....

I am hearing horror stories about iphone 5 battery life. A friend of mine in Hong Kong said he was down to 10% after 5 hours use with only 2 hours screen time. He said his friend is experiencing the same thing. I did a Google search and discovered many others are getting woeful battery performance also. I rarely get less than a day with that kind of use on my SGS3.

Ditto, there is a guy in my office, constant ***** fest about the battery life.
I can third this. Some people I know have this dhd on steroids and they like the phone but say its on par with the dhd. Not better by any means. Which is a good thing too. But still I can get through one day on my sgs2. That's all that matters. Would I like better battery life? Yeah. So far its OK. the sensation on the other hand is worse.

I think that unit that they tested was faulty. In 7-8 hours, my battery lost 7% whilst syncing (all via push) gmail, Microsoft exchange, facebook app and hub, and hotmail. I had one SMS message, 4 fb notifications, 5 gmail emails and 2 exchange emails. Hardly poor for idling. When I've been using my internet, the battery has been really quite good.
And I highly doubt the Sensation is better. On A SIMPLE LEVEL - qHD = more pixels, and so the battery is using more power, to power the pixels, and it has a smaller capacity, and on Super AMOLED Plus, black pixels need no, or very little battery because the pixels aren't illuminated (or something like that).

I think think half of these "my battery sucks" threads are user error or dodgy apps.
When I first got my phone I installed everything under the sun and my battery didnt make it to the end of the working day. After a hard reset and a careful reinstall, I can get 2 days on the same useage.

I'm not sure about other devices but, me and my friend who both have a galaxy sii agree that the minimum brightness is still way too bright for night but actually very adequate for shade use. But if your trying to view minimum brightness in daylight, then I suggest you just switch to manual brightness and use the notification bar as a brightness bar. seriously I'd rather turn it up to read whatever at that moment out find a shady area, seeing it in sunlight at minimum is way to hard. not worth the 30 seconds of battery life you'll probably save

From looking at the battery graph on the review, that has to be either a faulty device or possibly a brand new device which hasn't had even a single charge cycle. I'm not going to say this phone has the best battery life ever (name me a phone on XDA without a battery life complaint thread or a battery boosting kernel), but it is much better than my N1 and DHD, although it did take a few cycles to reach this level.
So to me, the SGS II is CNET Australia's phone of the year!
Bonza!
Regards.
Honestly all these battery threads and battery bashing reviews make me want to vomit *PUKE*...
seriously I'm having the best battery life with my sgs2 then I had with any other phone before and yes I did own an Iphone *shoot myself in head*, Desire HD, Wildfire, Dell Streak...
I doubt its faulty hardware and I'm sure that android OS bug is due to another reason (fixable, as lot of people dont have it) and I might get flamed for saying this but I bet everybody that has sh!t battery life is retarded and doesnt know how to setup his phone properly.
If you get sh!t battery life = blame yourself!

what do you mean by careful reinstall?
Anything you can share with us about your way of installing carefully?
Edit: I am actually very happy with the battery life that I get out of mine. I wouldn't even say I heavy use of the phone, I'd say constant use which is like only sometimes putting the phone down to walk to another building at uni or talking to a friend who is walking with me. Or of course im occupied with something else
Its a curse, I can't get enough if always playing games with it, or reading xda or looking through market or when I'm thinking about what else to do on the phone, I play with my smooth launcher pro home screens and 3D app drawer. So basically here is my battery graph
Basically you can see with that much awake time i got roughly 7-8 hours on a single charge, also im not sure what that giant dip in battery llife is any ideas cant remember what i was doing. But even with that im happy

i'm not trying to start trouble, but i would like you to prove that and do tests to support your claim. i would like you to set up your SGS2 however you want, airplane mode, factory reset, remove every single app from the phone, dont log in to any google accounts, whatever you need, and then make it last as long as an iphone 4. do both phones screen on time, web browsing over wifi, or watching a movie. cause i just dont believe the SGS2 can ever outlast an iphone 4 even under the best conditions possible.

I am getting incredible battery life!

I have to say that after some experimintation I am getting consistantly incredible batter life. For instance, I took off charger at 6:00 am at 100% fully charged this am. It is now 6:00 PM (12 hrs) constant MS Exchange updating, internet browsing, and about 2.5 hrs on phone calls, I now have 81%.
Some facts:
I am on stock KG5
the following definatly made the batter life wose:
Beautiful Widgets
Widget Locker Lockscreen
I have NO battery monitor programs like Juice Defender. In fact I have purchased Juice Defender Ultimate and I saw a slight decrease in perforance.
I have to following apps installed:
Sirius XM Premium online
App2SD Pro
Google Maps update
MLB At Bat 2011
Scanner Radio Pro
You Tube update
OI File Manager
Only downfalls of KG 5 is no video with the Google talk and Flash crashes with the browser. Tried KH1 and KH3, not ready for prime time.
Thoughts and comments welcome.

I think the problem is not the battery mate. You have the same problem than me. Talking two hours and a half by phone every day is nasty, I am sure you have about 80 mails every day like me. This is the real problem to solve, we have to work less so the battery will last more , and kick someone asses who are always calling us and giving problems
100 battery threads but i didnt yet find a clear answer if 2.3.4 improves battery life or not..i wait for the official release so i didnt use any 2.3.4 rom yet...
i too have awesome battery life! my phone was unplugged 13hrs 17m 15s ago and now has 88% remaining..... stock bvkg3 orange rom...
I'm tired of these threads. It's not like samsung sold some phones with good battery life and some without. They are ALL the EXACT SAME.
You can't have a 'better' battery life than another SGS2 user. You can't have a 'worse' battery life either. What matters is usage.
Anyone can get 'incredible' battery life - simply install any ROM such as cog or vr, and do a full wipe. Install only 10 apps, and use the phone sporadically, dare I say, use the phone 'as a phone'.
What I'm trying to say is that the people reporting 52 hours of battery life or what not simply do not use the phone as much as others do. If it sounds logical, that's because it is.
There is no 'magic pill'. I get 54h on standby because despite having 205 apps, I used betterbatterystats to uninstall the worst offenders. But today for example I got 6h out of my battery because I spent 3h hours with the screen on, 1 hour on GPS navigation in my car, 1 hours taking pictures with the flash on, 1 hour playing angry birds. 205 apps, endless memory resident programs, custom-everything, even my wallpaper is 3d with 16x MSAA through CF3d, what did I expect?
The whole Iphone comparison is also whack. I own an iphone 4. Sure when stock the thing flies and stays on battery like you wouldn't believe. But try to customize it and you'll find the same problems that you find on android. Plus, it's twice as heavy as my sgs2
I prefer using my sgs2 as a laptop, the battery life is still better than my acer.
I call bs. But while Im at it i get over 100 hours on my battery. On standby. Omg. I can't believe how long my phone lasts when I don't use it.
Or.
I used my phone 15 hours today. 5 hours screen time. Heavy wifi and cell data. .and snes emulator 2 hours. And I still had 30%. Omfg incredible. I can't believe it not butter. And these are my usual stats or the like. And I don't have a sgs2. I don't get to jizz my pants every day like you guys. Omg. This must be the most incredibly dumb post I've ever posted.

@cigaro78 You are sooo wrong! The batteries are not all the same. It depends on many factors (how they are stored before shipping, and lotof thing).
Last year i did some test on 5 exact same new mobile phones (samsung omnia i900) and 2 of them have battery wear of 24%.
So the point is that you coud buy a new phone with some percentage of damaged battery.
Thats a first thing, the second thisng is that firmware (battery optimisation) could extremely reduce or extend battery life, depanding on optimisation.
I tried 5 firmwares, 3 of them 2.3.3 and 2 - 2.3.4. (all stock roms)
Best battery experience I had with 2.3.3 XWKF3 (2.3.3), and the worst on XXKH3 (2.3.4), but for some users 2.3.4 is way better for battery.
I can't get over 16h of normal usage at all. (1h phone talk, 50-80 messages, 25 emails, 30 mins on internet (3G) and about 20 mins of playing amtale). DIsplay usage is 44% (auto), 25% Voice calls, 10% android OS, Internet 9% Android system 8% etc...
I was quite chuffed with mine, 2d 12 hours! admittedly not heavy usage but moderate!

Weren't you just trolling in the atrix forums letting us know exynos > tegra2? How's that being tethered to a wall working out for you?
I voided my warranty and your mum.

Lol sounds exactly like my usage.. I don't follow? Tethered to a wall? If you're referring to webtop I don't miss it one bit... And yes I troll the atrix forums frequently... I sold mine to my friend so sometimes I check on progress. And am I wrong about the tegra 2 vs exynos thing? Honestly i've heard arguments for both sides but wouldn't mind another opinion. Sorry to hijack.

Yet another mini Nexus 4 review

I know there have already been a million reviews of this device, but in case anybody wants a million and one, here's my 2 cents. If not, carry on.
This is my first Nexus device, coming from SGS2 and before that the original HTC EVO. I'm on T-Mobile USA.
After one week with the Nexus 4 my verdict so far is: good with potential to become great. Here are a few quick thoughts in pro/con format:
PROS:
- Super fast and fluid, I've noticed no lag whatsoever. Haven't played any 3D games yet though
- The N4 is definitely a sexy device and feels great in the hand
- I do like the smoothness of the glass and the curved screen edges.
- Painless unlocking / rooting
- Best phone for the price, by far
- Love having a notification light again, hallelujah
CONS:
- Have to say I am a little disappointed in the screen. It's not terrible but I guess I've been spoiled by the saturated screen of my SGS2. The N4 was just.....underwhelming. Sharpness is fine but the first thing I noticed is how dull the colors seemed compared to my SGS2. I'm sure I'll get used to it but I'm not able to call it an "upgrade".
- Surprised at the bugginess of Jelly Bean, I'd say I get one random reboot per day, maybe two. There are also other random oddities such as the bluetooth toggle not working properly, force closes, etc.
- I've had trouble with connectivity/connection speeds on both WiFi and cellular data, if I can't get them resolved it may end up being a dealbreaker.
- Battery is....meh so far. I've done all the recommended tips of disabling/removing this & that, and I generally make it through my day of low to moderate usage, barely. I have yet to have screen time of more than 2-2.5 hours. If I upped my usage by even just a bit I'd need a top-off during the day.
- The device seems quick to warm up. Even when I'm doing something like light web browsing it's surprising to feel the device warm up in my hands.
- Gotta admit there are a couple of niceties I miss about Touchwiz such as the quick toggles in the notification drop down.
- Given the numerous reports of glass breakage / scratches makes me super careful about handling my headset. Almost paranoid, really. Luckily I have no visible wear so far but it would be nice to not have to worry so much about this. I do like my phones naked though so I'm probably asking for trouble.
- Some of my apps are buggy with 4.2, guess that's the price you pay for being on the cutting edge.
- Ringer / notifications are really, really, really quiet when the phone is laying flat on my desk.
- I'm not a huge fan of the growing amount of "Google Bloatware". One reason I like having a Nexus device is to not have to deal with all the carrier installed apps / services. But I dislike having to disable Google Magazines, Google Plus, location stuff, Google Talk, etc. etc. Maybe if the battery was at least up to the task of supporting all these things I wouldn't mind as much.
Admittedly most of the above "gripes" are minor, but it's surprising because on my old SGS2 I didn't really have any gripes at all. If I can clean up a few of the above items I'll be very, very happy. Overall I think I'll like the N4 better than my SGS2, but it's far from the landslide I thought it would be.
I really don't get this random reboot issue. I can honestly say I haven't had it reboot once and if had it for over a week ...
And for me the battery life is great ...

Haven't decided yet if getting a good battery is just a lottery or if it comes down to usage habits. Probably some of both. As for rebooting I just got another one upon uninstalling HD Widgets. Clicked uninstall and *poof* there it went
Strange ... Could it be a rouge app ? Iv got 30-40 apps installed and not had a reboot ... Its really strange ...
And yea totally. Its probably down to my usage . I do a lot of browsing and xda

my battery life was terrible during the first week; I was so disappointed. After two weeks the battery life has improved so much that I easily get 4hrs of screen time. When on idle it only drops 3%/hour

You say that as if it's good. Many phones will drop 3% in 10 hours on idle.. 3% per hour while sleeping is downright bad dood.

Post/discuss your battery life!

We were missing a dedicated thread for discussing battery life, maybe due to the fact that not many have the phone yet.
I test LG phones and I put them through the same battery test with 3 topics, video playback, surfing and gaming at different screen brightness.
You can see the results here in Swedish, you can easily understand the numbers in the diagrams
Or you can read the whole article Google translated (turned out pretty good grammatically).
So post your battery results and discuss how to make it better (or worse)!

Ye, the battery time is much better than G3 if you do light usage, but as soon as you fire up some little heavier so the SoC has to work it plummets quickly.
The standby time is pretty good, several hours per %. But I did have some problem with Google Now wakelocks I think (hard to check without root), became better after uninstalling updates for Google Search and Google Play Services and then reinstalling.

Damn i was really hopeing for a great battery on the g4 after the announcement of the 808 chip. im coming from a ****ty droid razr m that dies quickly after a day, with terrible stand-by time. But i guess as long as the g4 battery is better than my phone, its still an upgrade
So after a a full day of my normal usage yesterday, web browsing, simpler games, some minutes of phone call. I did test that chess program in the other thread that ate like 10+% of my battery pretty quickly.

I ended the day at like 19%, then I forgot to charge it over the night, and it was down to 11% when I woke 12 hours later (Yay weekend). Then I used it down to 3% (dont mind the 30% after charging a while). I do have something under Android-System that is using my GPS and is draining battery sometimes, not much, but still irritating. I tried turning off lots of stuff, but cant seem to find the culprit.

I used G3 before G4 and G2 before that. G4 is better than G3 at light work like chatting, surfing, watching video, but gaming and when it stresses the SoC it becomes worse, even worse than G3. Some days ago I had 3:45 SoT at 3% when I had used the chess app in the other thread for a while. The day after I got 5 hours and 20% left because I had done mostly chatting and browsing.
The screen is almost as power efficient as G2 (which is awesome considering QHD and larger). But SD808 eats power like a fat kid eats candy.

At 0% its much darker than G3, at 100% its pretty much same as G3, not sure where that extra 25% brightness went really. I havent had any problem seeing the screen in the sun, not that I bring it up in direct sunlight much, also since I havent gotten it to overheat and lower brightness automatically, it should be a much better experience in the sun.
Zerolemon for me then
Thank you for this thread. This is all I needed to hear.
I have suffered through sub-2-hour screen on time on the G3 for a year now. I have done everything, turning off location, even getting the phone warranty replaced once, getting the Lollipop update, factory resetting yesterday. I have uninstalled apps, left them installed and Greenified. I have done some pretty in-depth testing with Gsam, Better Battery Stats, and the stock battery usage chart. I'm rooting my G3 right now just because I am scientifically curious what in the bleeding ****ing hell is eating my battery on this phone that I wiped yesterday. Yesterday.
I'm either going to Edge up to a Droid Turbo, like my wife has, since my Droid Maxx never did this, get an S6 Edge, or even just get a dumbphone I can make calls on and charge every 3 days, then get literally a Gpad or Nexus 8 or some smallish Android tablet with LTE.
After preordering the flagship phone last year, with more RAM and better specs than everything on the market, then suffering with charge-twice-a-day battery life for a year, I think smartphones have literally failed me, and I think I'm done.

All same use nu greenify or power save modes

Note 5 Battery Life

So far Day 3 of using the device on a normal workday. (It is officially released in Singapore on 15 August 2015)
Seems pretty well optimised!
No powersaving mode, normal use at the end of a typical workday, some calls, WhatsApp, text messages, games, etc.
Using the Scroll Capture btw.
Thanks for all the screen shots - it's sad that it's only gonna be 3-4hrs of sot. My note 2on stock battery and Cm12.1 gets 6-7 sot.....
Hopefully the note 5 gets better than your initial findings.....
Adidasfreak's numbers translate to about 4 hours SOT before dead... For me that is bare minimum acceptable, as I really like to keep my phone >25% in case I need the reserve.
I'll have to wait and see others results. 4 hours SOT isn't anything to brag about though.

Well here's mine. Much better
Even when you post battery data people still just ignore it. 50% remaining after 10 hours (3:45 SOT), averages of 17.5 hrs with 8.5 hours of SOT) is damn good by any measure.
I don't get all this negativity. OK. Maybe the SD card is real but you can't really dispute that it seems that battery life isn't something to complain about. For a group of technically adept users, I find this amazing. I swear reading all these posts is like reading transcribed rants of spoiled teenagers...
Phone Arena just did a comprehensive benchmark test on the Note 5s battery. Apparently, it really does outperform the Note 4. But by how much in real world usage, that's still debatable. At any rate I am a lot less worried about battery life on the Note 5. And, I got to play with the gold S6 Edge + and the beautiful titanium gray Note 5, today. Not as wowed as I thought I would be regarding feel, but they do look beautiful.

This is always my approach. I look at it like a "Try It Before You Buy It" fee that's refunded if you keep it.
Last year I actually added a third line to see if I really wanted to go back to Apple (had an S4) then cancelled the third line within the 14-day window once I convinced myself I wanted it...
...of course that was a failed notion since this POS has been slowly driving me mad ever since. Yes Mr. Jobs, I ONLY want to snooze for 9 minutes. Yes Mr. Jobs, of course I would NEVER want a keyboard that changes case to match what I'm typing. Mr. Jobs! Of course I wouldn't want to have free access to all that memory you graciously allowed me to buy at rediuculous prices as if it was a USB stick... :cyclops:

I really wish battery life was so obvious to compare, but it isnt. We are too smart here to fall for this. Battery life is extremely personal and nearly impossible to compare. "Normal day" usage... that's just funny. The best you can do is to compare consistent benchmark data.
Why don't you use a power bank in case the battery is getting low? The Note 5 battery life is not the best among others, but based on the benchmarks and users' reports, it is acceptable and not terrible.
I've never had a better battery. I hope it stays like this

I already saw a comparison of a 1 month old Note4 vs a brand new Note5 and it was pretty much the same story.
Unless a 1 month old battery is going to be VASTLY worse than a brand new battery.
Also the Note5 SHOULD use less power than the Note4, they moved from 20nm SoC to 14nm, moved from LPDDR3 to LPDDR4 which runs at lower voltage (and faster), and the new display which is 18-23% brighter while using 20% less power.
So it really is no surprise the Note5 is getting better battery life with a smaller battery.
What about the fact that the Note 4 is running an older version of TouchWiz and an older version if Android as well? Was that considered?

Of course, but since they dont have identical builds we can't really compare it at the moment. But even on the newer OS I really doubt there is anything they can do about the inferior hardware of the Note4. The newer tech in the note5 just uses less power, hence the smaller battery with similar or better battery life than the Note4.

lol why bother trolling with ridiculous hypotheticals? Maybe we should pull out a Note 1 and demand a current version of TouchWiz and Android to make it a device lifespan comparison? Newer devices are built to accommodate advances in hardware as well as software so it's idiotic to demand comparisons like you're proposing. The reality is that once a new device is released the older ones lose priority for software updates and optimizations and you're rarely, if ever, going to get a true apples to apples comparison.
