Afraid to RMA a screen lift for fear of getting a replacement with even more problems - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How likely is this horror story? (sorry I couldn't fit the whole question in the title)
My device is just great other than the screen lift. I could begrudgingly live with the screenlift. It has no dead pixels, streaks, speaker blowouts, etc. It's a C7O, four days old.
Google Support just accepted my replacement request, and I have a new N7 waiting for me to click the button. But I'm afraid to do this because compared to a lot of N7's, mine is actually in really good condition besides the screen lift. What are the odds that the send me some C6O that has screen left, four dead pixels, and a speaker that doesn't work?
However, I do have a friend who has had the N7 for a month now. I inspected his device yesterday and it's flawless. No screen lift, no dead pixels, no nothing... no fair!
Anyway, what do you think? Thanks.

I know this doesn't answer your question but .... how pronounced is your screen lift? Would you have noticed it if you hadn't read about it? Does it affect the operation of your N7?

If the screen lift isn't that bad then I would keep it. My first device had no screen lift but it had dead pixels and a bad touch screen, 2nd device had really bad screen lift and dead pixels. My 3rd device has almost unnoticeable screen lift, but everything else is perfect

Faulty screen dead pixels :(

Hi, I'm new to these forums and this is my first post. Been gleaning loads of top info for my Leo for the last 2 months and i have to say this place is fantastic.
Today I've noticed a problem witht he screen of my HD2. It may have been ther form day one but i have about 20 dead pixels in the top right corner of my screen. These never show up unless your in fullscreen with a light background. I've never once dropped ir mishandled it so I'm thinking its been there since day one.
I've linked to two hig res pics of the problem. Should i return this as faulty or have it repaired by the insurance? The thought of someone opening my HD" doesn't sound appealing...
Anyone else had dead pixes or screen issues?
That's definitely too many dead pixels there. Return it, if possible.
And the fact they are in the same area creating a large black spot indicates it's more a fault with the panel than the normal and unavoidable chance of getting a few dead/lit pixels.

[Q] Does the perfect (manufactured) TF101 Exist?

Hi guys,
I'm on my second transformer in a week and going back and forth between keeping it or going for another replacement. Let me address my question though.
Can those of you with this device confirm whether or not you have a perfectly constructed Transformer? What I mean by that, for the most part, is that it's devoid of the various hardware defects that people are complaining about. These include poor touch response on the screen (having to double touch, or it doesn't work at all), speaker balance issues, light bleed, and screen-to-bezel separation.
My first TF from Amazon had the speaker issue where the right was much louder than the left. However, that was the ONLY problem with it. There was no light bleed and the screen, from what I can remember, did not have any noticeable separation.
My replacement came from Newegg, and the good news is that the speakers both work great. The bad news is I have a SLIGHT light bleed down in the UI menu at the bottom of the screen when in landscape mode, and I would say a moderate issue of the screen being separated from the bezel. A lot of people seemed to not notice this second issue until they starting looking closer at their own TFs. Basically, run your finger around that little black line that links your screen to the case. Is it seamless with the glass or does it stick out?
I'm beginning to question my OCD at this point, but if people really can confirm for me they have 0 light bleed and seamless screens I think I will keep returning until I can get what I would consider a perfect replacement.
All feedback appreciated! Thanks!

Don't exchange right away. Wait till the last minute (of your return period) so you'll get the latest batch.
You know it is a file config fix for the speakers? You may be kicking yourself if that was your only problem and you now have one with lightbleed!
Paradaz, I found that out after sending it back to Amazon. :-(
I am kicking myself and doing it pretty hard.
I also found out I get the pleasure of paying shipping costs because I bought my second one through Newegg (Amazon was out so could only refund at the time).
I have decided the screen separation is making me too nervous, so here's to hoping the 3rd time is a charm.
Mine should arrive tomorrow or Tuesday I bought it through Wal-Mart .com. I'll report back if I see any issues mentioned. These things are selling like hot cakes though, it pretty amazing.
Mine should show up from Amazon tomorrow and I am all paranoid by everyone having issues so either I will be back and sobbing about it or I might not be heard from for a week.
I got my third from New Egg a week or so ago and so far it is virtually flawless. I say virtually because there is the tiniest bit of light bleed along the bottom but it is so slight that its unnoticeable unless pointed out (even on a black screen).
I'm on number 3 also. build is tighter than the other 2, but the first was tight in the beginning too. still has bleed and speaker balance issues. I've done the tweaks and used volume+. my only fear is blowing a speaker now.
hoping I have a keeper this time.
Mine seems perfect to me. I must be one of the rare lucky ones.

No issues here, have owned my TF for a week now.
-No random SODs
-No light bleed
-No speaker issues
-No touch response problems
-No creaky bezel issues
Guess I lucked out?
Each time I think I've finally convinced myself that I am going to keep my current Transformer, I stumble upon one of these threads. As much as I love the device, my OCD has me looking for defects whenever I have it in my hands. I received mine from Newegg Friday and this is what I've noticed so far:
- Minor light bleed along the bottom when in landscape mode. Nothing too serious but definitely noticeable when in a dark room and the bottom of the screen is black. I tend to think this is going to be the case with all these screens.
- Right speaker louder than the left. Seems almost universal. I ran a Left/Right speaker test and, although it isn't an overwhelming difference, the right is clearly louder. Perhaps this is simply a matter of the openings/slots on the right side?
- One speck of dust under the screen in the upper left corner an inch below the Asus logo.
- What appears to be a dead/stuck Pixel in the right corner. Didn't notice this initially as it only appears clearly against certain backgrounds. When I ran a pixel test, there was a black dot about the size of a pin point against bright blue backgrounds in that spot. Very hard to notice against other colors.
- Screen separation: I notice no defect on that front. Maybe the slightest separation on the right side where the mini HDMI port is... the main problem is me looking like a moron every time my girlfriend walks in the room and I'm intently starting at a turned off tablet.
I'm debating returning it to Newegg but then I worry that it is mostly a matter of me obsessively looking to find fault and that I'll end up with a worse one if I exchange it. I haven't returned anything to Newegg in years - you said they required the buyer to pay shipping?

lol when i read that i laughed hard
had a scare with mine, couldnt recharge it. But I was rooted, maybe it had something to do with it. The charger itself might have had a problem, but its ok now. Everything else is perfect. I've had mine for almost 3 weeks and it still works flawlessly. I show everyone my device and they are amazed

I would return this in an instant. The dust and stuck pixel would drive me insane!

I'm on number 4. Just got another 1 replacement from amazon yesterday, the build quality got better from the last 2 i got but this new 1 has worse light bleeding out of the 4 i got. I'm still thinking if i should keep the 3rd one i got and return the new one i just got from amazon or just return everything and get the samsung. Hard decision because i really like the transformer but the light bleeding is kind of annoying

I've received two units that I've opened (the others were sold unopened).
Both units have no issues beyond *extremely* minimal light bleed that is normal on any tablet screen, and not obtrusive in the least. One has a very slight gap at one short point in the bezel, barely twice the width of a human hair, if that.
You'd have to be beyond OCD to be unhappy with build quality on either of my tabs. And I didn't return any to get them.
But frankly I think plenty of people *are* beyond OCD, and expect a level of perfection that's simply not realistic.
It seems to be quite an issue, with the defected hardware. my came with a problematic power button which got worse with every use. now I can't lock/unlock the screen, can't turn it off and If I do manage to turn it off the only way to boot it would be to connect it to power. Today hopefully I will get it replaced.
Mine is perfect. I had a light cracking on the right side the first weeks, but it is gone now. I am very happy with my transformer. Browser scrolling could be better .
Nothing to complain.

Check List for hardware issues - deciding when to return unit

I'm trying to aggregate a list of hardware issues that might help new Asus owners to decide whether to keep or return their units.
I'm not trying to be a troll or anything. We understand that we're getting a very competitively priced unit, and we're realistic about the short comings Asus has had.
I've been reading the threads, and I'll try to reproduce some of the relevant info here as concisely as possible. If there's errors you see, please reply and I'll edit this first post like a wiki. Hardware issues are kind of difficult to fix, and it's a personal thing whether you decide to deal with the flaw or not. Software, there's hope
1) Light Bleed; hardware
To check for light bleed, try viewing a dark screen.
2) Touch sensitivity; software
Maybe fixed by updated version 3.1. If you find yourself repeatedly having to re-tap an icon, check if version 3.1 fixes the issue.
3) Touch screen dead spots; hardware?
Fewer reports of this, but certain spots of the screen don't seem to be touch sensitive at all. You can easily check for this.
4) Charger issue (gets hot, or just dies, etc...); hardware
This one is tougher to figure out first day, and may take some time to manifest. See thread
. Maybe also want to read this charger thread too.
5) Speaker balance; software and hardware maybe.
One speaker louder than the other? Try this. Although there's some left speaker issue that seems to be related to poor QC. See here and here.
6. Speaker pop; no idea if HW or SW issue
Some have this problem. Other people have a different problem.
7) Dead or stuck pixels; hardware
There's no fix for dead pixels. Stuck pixels can occasionally be repaired with the age-old massage technique, flashing the screen many colors for hours at a time.
8) Dust under the screen; Manufacturing
RMA it or seek a replacement from the retailer. Apparently, certain batches of the Transformer were manufactured in less than ideal conditions and dust got trapped under the screen. It's sealed properly, so the problem shouldn't get worse. Replace if it's a problem for you.
I just picked mine up on Sunday and playing around with it on Monday I noticed the back light screen bleed. Its glaringly obvious at full brightness. looking at a pitch black background, the bottom left quarter of the display might as well be grey. All the other corners/edges have it as well, just not as bad. I'm considering returning it.
That's the only issue I have come across.

Keyboard Dock Issues:
1) Battery discharges significantly in standby, or when dock is docked and off.; Software?
Appears to be a problem with dock's firmware. Future fix is a reasonable assumption, though right now, just detach the dock when it's not in use.
2) Crooked hinge, tablet docks at an odd angle and isn't flush; Manufacturing
Various degrees of severity. The hinge may appear crooked, but the tablet may dock flush. If the tablet docks in a weird way and doesn't lay flat and flush against the keyboard, it's probably best to seek a return if it bothers you. No way to fix it; The holes are drilled wrong, lol.
3) Keyboard does not respond to taps not right-on center; Hardware
Seek a replacement. Very uncommon problem, but there are reports. It's worth noting that it should not be difficult to use the keyboard!
Those who examine the light bleed issue - what menu sequence are you going into to get a "black" screen to better see the light bleed? I just hopped around until I see a menu that's fairly dark, but I haven't come across one that's totally black. And I picked a movie that had dark scenes...but again not totally black.
So, how do you bring up a black screen?

Or go to market and dl dead pixel test, there is a black screen to check.
im debating on buying the transformer. do you think i should buy a transformer and hope for the best knowing there might be problems? what do you think the odds are in getting a faulty transformer like is it a widespread issue or is it only with a small batch of ppl
My first Dock didn't charge tablet at all, but all buttons, touchpad, cardreader worked.
Don't forget touchscreen not working. It appears to be software but for some users there is no fix.

[Q]Dust or Dead pixels ?

How can i tell the difference between them , i have a few little dots on the top left of my screen i notice it when i turn the phone on and also when the screen is off.
If it's in the top left, that's likely dust. That's a problem area in HTC quality control for this device.
Also, if they are there when the screen is off then its' certainly dust.
Dead pixels do 1 of 2 things. They either don't work at all so they are black when the rest of the screen is on, or they stay 1 color constantly lit so they are lit when the rest of the screen is black (not off)
If the screen is powered off, even dead pixels don't stay lit.
Also, dead pixels aren't nearly the common problem they were on LCD screens just 5-7 years ago. I remember going through multiple computers monitors once trying to find a good one when LCD monitors first became affordable. It was a nightmare.
Now...you can buy $1000 big screen LCD TV's and not even worry about it.
Anyone ever come up with a solution to the corner dust problem. I have a patch about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch in that corner and it's so thick I can't see the notifications in bright sunlight. I'd rather not take it apart and wondered if a powerful vacuum or something might work?
Most people send it back in for a replacement
Very simple - if you can see something even when display is off then its dust else dead pixel.

[Q] Scren problems - dead (?) and overheating pixels

Hello!
Week ago i sold S3 and bought N4. I'm happy right now, especially from screen (PenTile < IPS ) but...
When turn on white image and look from left side i see two, dark stripes.
Also i have 4 overheated (super bright) pixels, and (I'm not sure here) some dead ones.
I don't know what to do. It's a good point to sent phone on warranty and exchange it to newest revision by the way? (RMA)
And yes... I have blue and orange tilt too.
I saturated photos for better look at my problem.
Bump. (can I?)
Aww thats bad luck...issues like yours are very rare... I suggest you RMA it mate... mostly i accuse people for RMA'ing devices without any good reason but your screen is in pretty bad condition...overheated pixels ? Nahh it seems more like the screen already came defective with some dead pixels included. I've got my Nexus 4 about 2 weeks ago aswell but mine neigher has any dead pixels nor any dark stripes...my tip is just RMA it to google and get a replacement.
Goodluck with it.
Respect
Thanks for advice, but I just realized, that I can't send my Nexus for exchange, because I'm from Poland, so I just have to give it on warranty. Shame.
