[Xoom 2][How-To] MZ616 Debrand / Unroot / Update to ICS incl. root! - Xoom General

This How-To is designated to all people whom would like to:
update their Xoom 2 to ICS.
reset their Xoom 2 to Factory Defaults due to guarantee.
debrand their Xoom 2, e.g. Vodafone or Telstra Stock image.
Credit goes to kent_lkc who managed to get the fastboot files and shared it with the community. I just wrote the How-To to make it easier to use.
Hint 1: After 1st flash you'll have a fresh image of Honeycomb 3.2.2 (build version 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU, no root!) Additionally, you'll loose all your personal data!
Hint 2: This How-To is only for Xoom 2 MZ616 (UMTS + WIFI)!
The procedure has already been proven working with thit ee following stock base images:
Xoom 2 MZ616 with:
0.268.6.MZ616.Retail.en.EU
0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU
0.281.4.MZ616.Retail.en.EU
Please let me know if the procedure has worked for you and which image version you had, so that I'm able to update this list continuously!
Pre-requisites:
You've downloaded and installed Motorola Driver: Click me!
You need this file: Mirror 1 (Google Docs, thx to Grauwiler) | Mirror 2 (Rapidshare, thx to GlennH) MD5: 385239a2e85c4368e9137ca7195034da
You need RSD Lite 5.7 or newer: RSD Lite 5.7
Step 1:
Install RSD Lite and unzip 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU update file into a folder.
Step 2:
Enable USB Debugging in Settings -> Application -> Development!
Boot your Xoom 2 into Bootloader: Shut down Xoom 2, press and hold both VOL UP + VOL DOWN, then press Power button until bootloader shows up. To select use VOL DOWN, mark "AP Fastboot" and confirm with VOL UP.
Step 3:
Start RSD Lite and connect Xoom 2 MZ616 with your computer. Then open the included XML file in the folder where you unzipped the update file. Under connected devices, choose your Xoom 2 and press Start. Happy flashing.
Step 4:
Your device restarts two times. After that your Xoom 2 is now successfully on 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU!
Hint 3: People which would like to unroot or debrand are finished now, every one else has to continue!
Step 5:
Hint: No-rooters continue with Step 7!
Re-Root your Xoom 2 using Dan Rosenbergs Xoom Root Exploit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502589
Step 6:
Very important! Update Superuser to the current version, please update the binary as well!
Download OTA Rootkeeper and backup your root privilege.
Step 7:
Look if there's a system update available in Settings -> About Tablet -> System Updates
Step 8:
Download the update and let it install, there's no need to temporary unroot. After the update is finished, restore root using OTA Rootkeeper.
DONE!
Hint 4: I assume no responsibility if you brick your device!

Where can i check the baseband? In the "About Tablet"? On this i have: System version, model number, android version, firmware configuraion version, baseband version, baseband configuration version, kernel version and build numer. The most similar to these numbers is build numer (1.6.0M_272.18_MZ616).
Ty and sorry for anything.
EDIT
I just figure out. Its the 1.272.18.MZ616.AmericaMovil.en.BR. But what retail is that? There is no mobile company in Brazil with such a name.

Not sure if this works for your model. You do have an 616, thats right, but it seems that Motorola has signature checks that prevent flashing into different regions.
e.g. have tried to flash US Image onto UK Xoom 2, Motoboot succeeded, but everything else failed with Preflash Validation Failure. Flashed french image for testing worked.

questions
Hi. My xoom2 is now 0.281.4.MZ616.Retail.en.EU. Bought from Orange Romania but it doesn't seem branded. I want to try this in order to get ICS cause it seems my particular version is not getting the OTA notification.
A couple of questions:
- Can i ever get back to my stock ROM and de-root in case I need warranty?
- If flashing fails will I have a brick due to the locked bootloader?
Thanks.

Just finished steps 1-7. Step 8 in progress. No problems till now. Step 8 is pure Motorola job, so if something will fail, it could fail anyway.
Had exactly the same FW as you.

If your particularly stock image fastboot firmware will be available, yes, then you're able to flash back to stock.
If flashing fails, your Xoom will only boot to bootloader = softbrick. But if stock image available, you can fix this as well.

FASTBOOT FILE IS VALID FOR 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU
Sorry for this simple question.
The thread said that the fasboot file is valid for the xoom 2 mz616 version 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU.
Does it means that if I flash my Xoom 2 system version 0.281.4.MZ616.Vodafone.en.EU, I will have a XOOM 2 system version 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU and after this I will be able to update to Ics?
Sorry again for this basic questión. Thanks for your help.

Worked like a charm.
I started with 0.268.6.MZ616.Retail.en.EU and after flashing 0.281.8.MZ616.Retail.en.EU I was offered the official ICS update I was waiting for.
I don't have to mention, that I rooted before upgrading to ICS, installed OTA Rootkeeper and now happily have a rooted ICS version.
Thank you so much.

Unbrick A500 without Chinese Update.zip

Hey guys,
Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but I managed to unbrick my A500 using this Update.zip
http://www.filesonic.com/file/958397621/acer_a500_0.000.00_1.122.01_emea_gen5_update.zip.html
It only has English, French and Arabic language support.
Interesting! Where'd you get this file?
unbrick tablet
Mine is a USA model. would this work?
I randomly stumbled across this while doing a Google search.
I tried flashing it on my Australian model (which I think is the same as the US) and it works fine.
wait, do you mean it supports Arabic in menus and reads and writes Arabic with no issues ?
please answer this because I'm so looking for something like this

Edit: I hate filesonic, so sloooooooooow.
I will upload it to multiupload when I download it. Here's the link: http://www.multiupload.com/D3A2DU7X4D
What I don't understand is why files like these are NOT OFFICIAL from Acer ???
THANK YOU...I accidently deleted the wrong App Folder and my Acer Froze but I installed this Update but the problem I'm having now is that my Wifi either doesn't work or it can't connect to my 3G tether from my Droid 2....Does anybody else have Wifi Issues?
thanks a lot dr1337 for showing us the arabic support and finding this file
and thanks to you too mr.r9 for the multiupload link
now I can show off with my Iconia
I flashed this image to get out of a boot loop. It worked but now I have no lock screen and the home button doesn't work.
Try doing a factory reset.
now i have the chinese update.zip installed,can i overwrite with the engl./arab update.zip
ok,it works,
now i have the market back.
how do I get the update on Android 3.1
thnx to dr1337
but i need the german update.zip for complete restore
I am having a similar issue. I used this to get up US version unbricked and it worked, but now I am unable to update the tab to any of the newer versions. I have manually downloaded the 141.07 and tried to flash it and get and error about signature verification failed. any way around this now.
so I am guessing the update I tried to get before I realized my tab got bricked because I renamed the phone files I won't get it after flashing this update? I really would like the update that supposdly came out may26.
That worked

Where did you download the update?
Acer needs to put out a system recovery image with this Tablet. Their computers have them. The hoops we have to jump through to get OUR hardware working are ridiculous. Hell you can load a restore image on a freaking IPAD, but not this ?
a flashable factory recovery image should come with the tablet just like recovery partitions on some PCs.
Especially since the Acer update screwed up my tablet. All I had done is run gingerbreak and installed some screencap apps.
I hope the 3.1 update is better

[Q] Stock 4.1.2 JB to KK update and unlock help

Hello all, my Razr M (9.8.1Q-78-1) is still locked and not rooted! I had not been informed of updates on my device (I think) because I have Motorola services disabled. I hope I didn't miss the boat again! I have looked around for up to date news, but I am late and my situation is not common!
The big question: "Is it too late to OTA" through Moto/Verison, and if so, are there any other options? Thanks in advance for any help / pointers!

Thank you for responding, I have read that KK can be rooted and unlocked. What concerns me is that the update might have been patched! I may be a nervous noob, but I am sure they are hard at work to slam the door. It is now 12:26 am July 30, and I am running late to the party, again!
I apologize for the new thread, maybe I should have been more patient. I am anxious, I do not know how much time I have left. I missed the boat last year and have had a lot of time to stew on it! I am just being cautious before taking an OTA as I should be, at least I've learned that much.

Tiny update 9.30.1.en.US?
Can someone please tell me what this OTA is (9.30.1.en.US), it took only seconds to download? Is this the norm?!
Previous system was 98.16.3.XT907.en.US / 4.1.2 / 9.8.1Q-78-1
Any ideas what this update is? Was this pushed before KK?

Thank you, I have been reading about rsd lite (old thread 2013). If I am understanding this right, you can flash stock KK (manually downloaded with PC from the link you posted) with it even though I am unrooted and have a locked bl (because it is an official ROM)? If this is true, I do not need to rush, and do not need to use OTA at all? Downloading latest vers. 5.7 of RSD Lite now. Do I still have to edit xml?
My phone downloaded that update (98.30.1) last night, but I did not install it. If I do a FDR, will it effectively remove the update from whatever semi-hidden cache it downloaded it to? or should I just let it install? If either one is safe, then I can take all the time I want, and take baby steps. I really don't want to brick it, I use it daily for work!

1. Yes, firmware can be flashed on locked bl's. You just can't downgrade.
2. If you want you can install the 98.30.1 OTA or just flash up to 183.46.10, your choice.
3. Don't touch the xml, there's no need. That's only for downgrading or even re-flashing to stock.
4. A FDR will remove any update data on your device, but you will be asked again to download it.
4.5 Again, your choice.

Thanks for sharing but the filehoster is not the best choice. If you press the wrong downloadbutton a file with the same name but with an "exe"-ending is tried to be downoaded which contains malware.
So don´t press the orange download button!
It's exactly the same ROM zip as the soak test captured in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-lollipop-indian-ota-captured-t3002674. The MD5 hash is the same. That confirms the soak test is 100% sure the same zip as the OTA zip that is rolling out right now in India.
I really appreciate all the hard work of all the XDA members . What would the Android platform be without XDA?

Just read.
The update expects retdsds (that's the international version) you have retgb (that's the British version)
This is not recovery flashable zip. The phone should detect the update is available in Settings > About Phone > Software Update.
If update is not detected then it could be the version or location issue. This is for phones sold in India in Retail Market, not with Mobile Phone operator. Or could be some other reason we may have to investigate and find out.

That's because you have the UK version of the XT1068. The recovery doesn't allow you to install it because this version is for the retaildsdsall only. In the UK there's another ROM for the XT1068.
You can install the retaildsdsall KXB21.85-23 ROM. But that isn't very easy. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/official-lollipop-indian-ota-captured-t3002674 The FAQ #5 answers specifically why the update doesn't work for UK models.
i flashed the update in recovery and it flashed, i wasnt getting the update so i just flashed it but i think it is the soak test :S
I had to flash it from the recovery also, it didn't want to update from the "System updates" menu.

Do not try to flash until somehow it is proved that it is safe (or is it work at all?).
You can brick your device!

Big thanks. I checked it found nothing special and copied it to the internal storage of my 4.5.3 device. Disabled Wifi and run the update from the settings menu. Now my device is on 13.3.2.8.
How did you grab it?

Hello,
Can I ask how you managed to run the update from the settings menu?
I Don't see an option to run updates from there! I too am already on 4.5.3 and would rather like to rollback to an earlier version if it is indeed possible using this rollback file.

Put roolback file into the Internal storage folder of your Kindle.
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap Settings. Tap Device, and then tap System Updates. Tap Update.
If Kindle do not find update try to do this with wifi off and reboots after each steps.
Just want to confirm it worked on my 4.5.3 too... switched wifi off first and all seems good !
Rollback from 4.53 to 3.2.8 also confirmed for me!
Many thanks ONYXis, that worked perfectly! I too can confirm that it worked and I have rolled back from 4.5.3 to 3.2.8.
Can hardly believe it was that easy. Now too look around some more to find out what I can do now I am finally rooted.
Thanks for your help.

Just had a thought, as we effectively rolled back our devices, does that mean we will NOT get ota updates from Amazon now? It would be pretty handy if they didn't work oat now. Save is from worrying about losing root access
has anyone tried this on 4.5.2?

Kudos !!!!!
Wish same can be done with Apollo but there seems no point as there's no TWRP / unlocked bootloader.
I'm not trying to point finger at your work just saying if bootloader unlock can be achieved for Thor or Apollo over 13.3.4.8 ~ ish versions....
edit : please add "Thor" to your title [emoji1]

Unable to debrand Huawei Nova

Hi everybody,
this is my first post so please forgive any "incorrect habit" might come out of this post.
My situation is the following: I bought a Huawei Nova smartphone about a week ago. It comes with Vodafone brand and the complete build model is CAN-L01C02B130CUSTC02D014.
I read lots of forum posts and blogs over the web and what I learned is that:
- L01 means single sim;
- C02 means that is branded Vodafone;
- B130 is the firmware version;
- CUSTC02D014 is the custom build with the debug version.
I want to debrand my smartphone (without unlocking or rooting it, if possible) so I downloaded FirmwareFinder and, from there, I fetched every firmware compatible with CAN-L01 following to my build model (made on 2016-09-14). Unfortunately, I was not able to install any of those firmwares (very strange).
Given the above-mentioned information, here are my questions:
1 - is it possible to debrand my smartphone without unlocking and rooting?
2 - is it really possible that every firmware made after mine (on 2016-09-14) failed to install?
3 - how can I pick a compatible firmware?
4 - someone wrote that before installing a more recent firmware, one must debrand by downgrading and then (only then) update the firmware itself. Is it true?
Thank you very much,
Valerio
Hi there,
I will move your thread in the correct forum dedicated to Huawei Nova/Nova Plus Questions & Answers for more relevant answers.
Good luck
For your case you have to find a full update.app and to flash it via the tree buttons method

Ok so I need tofind a full update, but I am not able to do it on FirmwareFinder...I guess I have to wait for it a little bit...but (knowing that I have CAN-L01C02 build model) do you think I can install a CAN-L01C432 firmware when it comes out?
Thank you for your help.

I think that is better not to install it using the three button method. If you going to do it, at least have a nandroid backup, assuming you unlocked your bootloader and installed the twrp.
One other way to try, requires a unlocked bootloader too, huawei extract tool and then flash system.img and boot.img at least.
I linked the source, but Idk if it is going to work and requeries courage to do this :/
Edit: sadly, wait for the official upgrad is the most safer thing to do right now

I can tell for sure, but from the changelogs I read, it seems it is a test build or something like that. I could open it with dsixda and will try to flash as soon I unlock the bootloader but I'm waiting to get the code.

Thank you so much for the link! I think it should go flawlessly as long as it is compatible with CAN-L01 (and it actually is). The only thing that stops is that it is a test build...maybe I'll wait the official release too.
