Screencast/ Video-Audio Capturing - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

I was intrigued by the new Note II feature where it was demonstrated that you would be able to capture a video of you making markings using the S-Note while also having audio being captured.
My suspicion is that this feature (if ported to the note 10.1) will be limited to S-Note.
I have found other note making apps, namely Quill, to be lightyears ahead of S-Note in the design of their interface and in their taking advantage of the pressure sensitivity of the digitizer in this tablet. It would be completely ideal, for me, to be able to take video recordings of my note-taking using other such apps whilst having audio embedded. For example, it would be absolutely useful to have the ability to play back the process of taking notes in a lecture using Quill whilst having my teacher's voice embedded over the video.
What I would like to know is namely if anyone has tried out any apps such as "screencast" which allow such functionality? I have not rooted my device yet, so it is not possible for me to see if this app works well on this tablet. Otherwise, does anyone know of any apps besides screencast which serve the same purpose? And of course, speculation as to whether the new note II features (if ported) will allow screen/audio recording throughout the user interface is welcome in this thread.
Cheers,
And a note to the mods: While this post is posed in the form of a question, I feel it is more suited for general rather than Q&A because of the rather unspecific nature of the question and discussion it may promote with regard to a certainly sought after feature by many users.

Bare in mind, it's a very early release.

You have that in S-note. Just open a new document with squares and you get a red dot in the menu. Record and enjoy!

To reemphasize, I am not so fond of S-Note as I am of other note taking apps, namely Quill, which is much more suited to the fast paced note-taking required for the course I am taking.

Thanks for this.
Just got around to watching this video, and it has me excited. Seeing as he initiated screen recording from his home page, I'm under the assumption that this will work throughout the interface. I do hope this makes it to the final release. For anyone time-pressed, he demos this feature at 2:40 in the video.

Alright, well a few months has passed and I have now flashed a JellyBean 4.1.2 rom. and as is probably evident to most... the screen recording feature didn't make it into the final version of JellyBean despite showing up in some of the leaked versions.
At any rate, since I have rooted the tablet, I went ahead and installed Screencast Video Recorder. It has worked phenomenally in most cases; however, just lately here some of the videos I have made will not play and seem corrupted in various ways (I suspect this may be because of having EZ Task Manager installed recently on my device, but I won't have made a video with it uninstalled yet until tonight.. so we'll see if that fixes things).
I was wondering: of those of you who use this app on the SGN 10.1 and have gotten it to work well, what settings do you use both within the app and within the system settings? Any other tips, such as avoiding installing certain apps or anything else you might suggest, for getting this amazing app to run optimally?

How is the Tegra 2 support? Looking to try it out on the Atrix.
I bought it the other day, and it runs pretty well on my Samsung Epic 4G.
And don't let the android market fool ya, it's android requirement is v2.3.3 not v2.3.7.

At least on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, it runs a little slower than I would like at high quality settings(1024 texsize = 15-30fps depending on preset). If you lower the texsize to 512 in settings (which is still pretty sharp), it helps a lot.
I am not sure why it runs slower on the Tegra 2, but I suspect its because the GeForce ULP is not a variant of the PowerVR GPU that most phones use and the OpenGL ES drivers don't like one or two calls I'm making.
I fully intend to get it buttery smooth on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, so you can buy this with confidence. If I am not able to make it 100% within a few weeks, I'll refund you
I plan on working on improving Tegra 2 performance over the next few days, so you should see improvement soon. I have not tried it on an Atrix, so for all I know, it could work better than my tablet.
awesome
so glad to see this finally made it to the market, there are some presets that seem to run smoother in androp, hopefully some shared knowledge will get that sorted out, already told the dev about it anyway, just had to post something cause I'm too much of a noob to figure out how to subscribe to this thread any other way :-/
Awesome I never thought I'd be able to have milkdrop in my pocket from when I started using it in winamp years ago. I'm also on an Atrix and am looking forward to improved Tegra 2 support. One problem though, Market complains that my device isn't compatible with the app. Any idea why? I'm running a CM7 nightly which is up to 2.3.7. Not sure what the other requirements of the manifest file are...

The market is strange. I don't understand how it decides who can install something. It says the Atrix is supported in the developer's console, so I'm not even sure where to look next.
It should be up on the Amazon market soon, although with their one week delay for updates, it will be out of date most of the time.
We released version 3.10 today, mostly centered around startup performance and stability. It helps a lot with the live wallapaper.

Yeah, I will be looking at the presets you poinetd out next week after the holidays. Performance stuff on that level erquires more concentration than I have available right now.
Looks to be running fairly well on the Atrix but seems to slow done a bit when there's a lot of lines drawn on the screen. Also tends to force close every now and then.
Running CM7 FYI.
BTW, is there a way to make this dependent on only media sound output rather than mic input?

We are working on allowing you to select only mic or audio input instead of the aut omode that projectM currently uses. Technically, projectM already supports thi feature, but we don't have a settings screen yet. I know, it sounds stupid. projectM is pretty boring with no sound input at all, so we made auto the defualt and figured we would add the option eventually for people like you who know what is going on. Expect it in a week or so.
As for the FC issue, can you give me any info? I would love to fix it for you.
We just released 3.13 to the Market. 3.11 and 3.12 were big crash fixers, 3.13 not so much.

projectM is now availanle on the amazon appstore.
Unfortuneately, Amazon requires review every time an update is released so this is a very old build at this point. I have submitted a much newer one for review, but they are still reviewing it. Use the Google Market if yo ucan, as this one will always be 3-4 days behind as far as updates go.
Pretty soon 3.15 will be out with support for selecting just one preset in live wallpaper mode.
Bought the app from Android Market. Running Epic 4G Touch stock kernel, unNamed ROM. Now I can feel like xbmc is alive in my pocket. Thank You psperl.
Anyone want to test an Android 2.2 build for me? I tried it on a Samsung Intercept I just scooped up and it runs like trash. I am not sure if there is something wrong with porjectM or if this phone is just slow.

Finally bought your app
I tested it on my Nook Color and HD2 - a little sluggish @ 1024 texture size , better with 512
Can you add an optional FPS counter? and maybe a limiter also?
Also , any updates on the Widget option?

I am not sure the widget is possible. I've looked pretty hard.
I just completed some performance optimizations that I will be releasing tomorrow after I get home from work. I want to be around (and not asleep or at work) in case it blows up.
projectM already has a limiter set to 30fps. I just asked my co-developer to add a setting to change it. 30fps is the sweet spot because most MilkDrop presets were written with that speed in mind. I don't see why I couldn't add a display as well.
I tried to search more info on using opengl in widgets and it really seems impossible
But , I might found some interesting info - if you can look into it I'll be glad
ICS has introduced a new thing called TextureView
http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/TextureView.html
I'm not a dev , but can this be used to "stream" the visualizations?
Code:
A TextureView can be used to display a content stream. Such a content stream can for instance be a video or an OpenGL scene. The content stream can come from the application's process as well as a remote process.
TextureView can only be used in a hardware accelerated window. When rendered in software, TextureView will draw nothing.
Also why some visuals looks different on pc? are there missing components?
BTW , love the new music controls! but it needs more work such as configurable/automatic opacity
can you can add the track name appearing on track change like milkdrop? if not a simple text on top would be great

Demo video of ICS leak

Hello everyone. I made a video earlier today to demonstrate the general functionality of ICS on the Note. This is Chainfire's repackaged Chinese leak (ZCLP1). CLICK HERE for the original thread. I have made some customizations for smoother operation. I thought it was going to be a 'short' video but turned out to be 40 minutes long. I have divided them in 3 parts. Feel free to check them out if your having doubts about installing the leaked ROM.
Edit. A fair warning, the videos are amateur at best.

No, I don't think I have any banding issues at all. I have attached an image posted by someone else here. It's a great way to find out if you have banding issues. You can try it with varying brightness and you'll definitely notice the issue if you have it. Btw, there is always going to be banding if you use anything that is black/grey on the LOCK SCREEN. This is not a display issue. I think the lock screen has a greyish transparency overlay that causes the banding. Other than that, it's pretty smooth sailing.

Thank yu so much for that imformative set of videos.
Does Samsung include Swype keyboard as an option with ICS as I did not see it listed in your video?
Also, have you had a chance to play with voice control at all? I wounder if Samsung\VLingo is going to be a part of ICS build for GNote and maybe they have made some much needed improvements to voice control on the GNote.
I have had a lot of inconsistency with Voice control over bluetooth with the current setup.
Again thanks for your work.

Samsung does not include swype with this build. However, you can always download it from the market. And thanks for mentioning voice controls, Claude! I tried it and works like a dream. And I have a little guide HERE if you would care to take a look. It has step-by-step instructions for getting the exact same thing you saw on the video on to your Note. Have fun flashing, Claude!
Thanks Acidburn89,
I will likely use your guide and go for it over the w/end. I have recently upgraded my rooted GNote to substancer's XLA6 Deoxed and zipaligned tweaked ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416192
with Vertumus' ICS Domination v1.1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467985
and am playing with that combo for the moment, Rooted and all.
I hope I am not out of line or not being PC here (If so, let me know and I will change this reply) in giving links to other efforts on XDA.
Regarding voice control;
Is it very different in ICS than in GB?
Is it still Samsung Powered by VLingo?
I use Plantronics Voyager Pro+ BT headset and have come to resign myself that Voice Control via BT is not reliable at all, totally inconsistant in it's behavior for me. I push the BT button and sometimes VLingo responds that it is ready (after telling me the number of calls I miseed, etc. and sometimes it just tell me what I missed and then stops dead in it's tracks. I have to push the button again and start over. I could go on about this but I would be hijacking this thread. I hope that Voice Control prooved to be clearly better and decernably improved in ICS.
Thanks again for your info and efforts in helping the rest of us get a leg up on ICS.

In a community driven development forum, I don't think there is much politics to begin with. The voice control is not the vLingo one. I think this is the ICS
version of google voice. But it functions exceptionally well. Has a very siri-ish feel to it. I will try and post a video sometime soon.
Btw, I use a Sony Ericsson MW600 bluetooth stereo headset and it works perfectly fine.
Edit. I think it is called Google voice search and voice actions and not Google Voice. It does offer personalized voice recognition, so i am guessing it will only get better with more usage.
Thanks for the video!
I don't know why, but honestly, I felt kind of sleepy watching the video. hehe. Maybe you should be more active, or have a drink (alcohol) to cheer up while recording the review.
I had been using super smooth home screen navigation and convenient features of ICS on Nexus S, but recently upgraded to Galaxy Note. The Note's stock interface is sometimes kind of laggy though. I really hope Samsung releases ICS soon, but I'm also kind of worried they might be delayed just like all the other Android devices. Nexus S (AT&T version) still didn't even get an official ICS update.
Nice videos.. very informative mate... only watched part 1.. part 2 & 3 later....

Hey - great Video.
I noticed something on 4.1.1 (and did not see it in your video). It took me for a spin-loop the first time: When downloading something fom the web (deafult browser) it does not save the file anymore to the internal (/mnt/sdcard/Downloads) - but instead to the external SD-card (I assume when one is present. I have not tried it without my externalSD yet.
Thanks again for the features.....
LOVENOTE10.1
One disappointing thing I have noticed in s note.
If you wish to have a custom background based upon an image it does not save that image as a template background for future sessions. You must go through the entire process each time. I prefer to write with a white pen on black lined paper. It would be nice if the background gallery would retain this option for me between sessions.
Also I do not see any way for us to custom design our own templates. Am I missing something? I can think of a number of layouts I would like which they do not offer by default.

Yeah, if its possibe, ideally enough so we can read the menu options, pause the video so we can see if anythings new or changed, generally a better view of everything, if its possible, i assume you do it this way because its easier, less fiddly not worrying about being out of camera, im assuming

If you save a blank note with the background you want, when you want to start a new note, open the orginal and "save as" before you start using it. The orginal "sort of" becomes a template. Kind of crude but faster than changing the background each time. I think the S-Note we have is going to be the S-Note we'll be living with for quite a while.

Now that there's a Windows version of S-Note they'd be smart if they published a SDK like they have for the S-Pen in general. The fact that syncing S-Note's to a Samsung account has been added might mean something's planned for the future.

I agree guys, they should at least have a section in the settings or somewhere in the app to request features or leave feedback. Especially since its not in any of the app stores.
Also I just signed into Samsung Apps and they're giving $20 coupons for learning hub to all users, not that I've seen anything in learning hub that interests me :/

Everytime i watch videos in higher quality and in the video are fast movements, it jumps forward for 1 or 2 seconds. I have the impression, that my transformer handles the video to slow, because if i watch films where is no real action, everything is fine.
I hope you understand me and sorry for my bad school english.

New version does show slight improvement in video playback speed though, although could be placebo...

Thankfully I had a Titanium Backup of a few months ago....
Everything's working great now.

[Q] Why are Nexus 10 handwriting apps always lagging?

So I just bought a nexus 10 and among the many reasons for getting one, I want to take notes with it. I've bought myself a nice stylus that works wonderfully on iPads and my galaxy nexus phone. However, writing with the same stylus and exact same apps on my nexus 10 isn't working as one would hope. It seems to lag quite badly in picking up where my stylus is and this forces me to write very slowly so that it will pick up all of my strokes, thus making it pretty much useless in a classroom setting, but, like I said before, I don't see this at all with my galaxy nexus.
So, why am I seeing such a huge difference in performance between these two devices when (I assume) the nexus 10 would be so much more powerful than my phone? Is it the apps or the hardware? And how do I fix this issue without just writing my own note taking app?
I faced no problems working on freenote/ handwriting or myscript calculator ?? I might loook at the stylus and not the N10

But I've seen this issue regardless of the stylus used... Even with my finger I see a lag.
I also tried free note on my phone and tablet and am seeing a lag only on the nexus 10. I seriously doubt that it's the stylus, it seems to be isolated to my device...though, I haven't tried this with any other nexus 10 device. I don't know anyone else who has one.

a wild guess could be that the app aren't optimized for the high resolution screen and that is why they have trouble keeping up.
I haven't tried it myself yet but I will when I get my Nexus next week

That's my best guess so far as well. Thanks in advance for trying this out

Are you on stock? Or did you root and install a custom ROM? what about a custom kernel?
I have found some ROMs to have far more input lag than others, so that is why I am wondering.

I'm on stock everything. I am using Apex Launcher though.
Well stock should be ok. I see the most input lag with custom roms that do a lot to the framework and launcher, such as Paranoid Android.

I actually already saw that thread but thank you for pointing it out.
I haven't touched the Dev options and wouldn't even know how to change the magnification. I've only had the device for about a week or two and haven't had any time to really get playing with it yet.
I use lecturenotes from the play store, haven't had much of a lag issue
Using latest AOKP PUB build and Ktmanta
Also have force 2d GPU rendering on dev options

Just tried this with both lecture notes and free note (free note had less lag of the two from what I could tell)... It did improve the lag quite a bit, but I'm still seeing a noticeable and significant enough (in my opinion) lag. Seems that one step has been taken... Anybody got any others?
Also, I tried using Seeder but saw no significant difference on my device.
FYI, I'm now rooted but still using stock ROM/kernel.

Sorry about that, my lag seems very minimal, I've been taking notes in class all semester and it sends I've been able to take them quicker in my n10 then on paper, lol
I'm rooted running AOKP PUB 2/11 wit KTManta kernel (this setup, along with sine customizations to the kernel, have made my tablet really responsive and smooth)
Edit: I guess I don't remember what I had previously written, lol my bad

I'm still having this problem on stock 4.2.2 (as well as the latest CM nightly), and was wondering if anyone had any fixes. My Jot Classic works okay, but not well enough for any serious note-taking, and considerably slower than the same app/stylus on my nexus 4 and 7. My main issue is that it isn't sensitive enough to write small exponents and subscripts.

Do you have force GPU rendering on in developer options? If so, turn that off, it got rid if my lag on lecturenotes after the 4.2.2 update

Today, I finally got my Nexus 10 and I started to investigate this ominous delay or lag. I indeed observe this lag on my Nexus 10 in LectureNotes and all other handwriting apps that I tested. As far as LectureNotes is concerned, I did a number of careful timing measurements and I think I can definitely exclude that the delay is due to slow drawing or anything like that. It seems that, on a Nexus 10, Android sends input events with a noticeable delay of around 250ms or so if they origin from touching the display, this is why a drawn line lags behind your stylus or finger. However, the delay is absent if you use a mouse (connected via Bluetooth), and hence there is no lag and the line follows the mouse pointer very closely. This is somewhat bad news, as this means that this problem cannot be solved within LectureNotes.

If that is the case, could the input delay be tweaked or removed through kernel modifications?
@EniGmA1987: If my explanation is correct and if one can modify the input handling, this might be possible. It seems that users with non-stock ROMS do not suffer from this problem, but this is just my impression based on contacts with LectureNotes' users and might be wrong.

Hey, I'm one of the people that has contacted you, and I can say that the input lag is significantly less on a custom ROM then on stock. Still there, but very slight

Sorry for not being more involved in this thread...been really busy lately.
I feel that have solved this issue for my current configuration. I've found that with the following setup, any lag that may be occurring is so slight that I either don't notice or I don't mind it:
-Get a stylus that actually works well (I had accidentally bought the first generation of the Adonit Jot Pro which has horrible sensitivity. However, after obtaining the 2nd generation, I've had no problems at all... one of my biggest reasons behind the lag was this 1st generation stylus)
-Stock 4.2.2
-Run Seeder 2.0
-DON'T force GPU handling
-Using LectureNotes Pro
-Create all lecture notes notebooks with a much higher resolution than what is initially set as the default. (This is what made the biggest difference)
From what I've observed, it seems to me that the best explanation behind any significant lag on this device is its extremely high resolution. I assume that most handwriting apps are programmed in such a way that the increase in pixel count hinders the sensitivity of the app itself.
