Any news on the official ICS update? - Atrix 4G General

They said it was to be released in Q3 of this year and we're already in Q4. Are they skipping ICS and updating us to JB?

 what calendar are you looking at...q3 is still 2 weeks from ending, also why open a new thread when you could have just posted in one of the others...

I got it!

Nope. I think Motorola is skipping ICS and JB. They are waiting to update our Atrix to Key Lime Pie. Please be patient. :highfive:

A source close to Moto informed me a WP7 firmware is about to roll out. Stay tuned.

I'm pretty sure that the Motorola Service Centre guy I talked to promised a Q4 release of BlackBerry 10 for the Atrix...
He said that the Blur version for that update would be 4.5.199 and that the update would bring LTE to our Atrixes The update is so magical, that guy said that our capacitive buttons will dissapear and the gesture pad along with the BlackBerry branding will take its place!

Wow I like that idea! Hey I heard that they are gonna give us ios 5 with the buttons also disappearing and one button with thumb scanner will control everything. Not sure about that one tho, might be moto pulling our leg.

Nope, you are all wrong Motorola will give us Windows Mobile 98. And their slogan is: "The world's most powerful phone is now world's first phone with WM98"

Annnnnnnnnnnd, this is why you use the search button everyone.

The OP didn't even have to use the search button. There are at least 2 ICS threads on the first page alone... But, hey, why not create more and fill the first page of the General section all about ICS.
At least, that's what I get from seeing another new member with mad necromancy skills bringing ancient ICS threads back from the dead.

galaxy s gets gingerbread before atrix?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/...pdate-now-rolling-out-across-europe/#comments
kinda sad that a phone thats been out for almost a year is getting gingerbread before the atrix. i think its ATT's fault. they seem to delay OS updates, at least they did for the captivate. both rogers and bell got froyo months before att. maybe ATT wants to make sure all the features it wants disabled are in working like wifi hotspot?
True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

It sounds like even if it won't be untill late June they are trying to be more on the ball after making us wait so long for Froyo. Galaxy S Gingerbread OTA Rolling out in Europe???

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/31/galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-lands-in-the-uk-better-late-than-ne/
I see this is already posted, but why is Engadget just picking this up? Is this a bigger deal now? I know we're U.S. CDMA, so does that mean this new OTA means absolutely nothing for us? Until it officially comes to the U.S. eventually? With how long the 2.2 update took I'm really nervous we'd never get an update but if they're already rolling out across Europe... anyone know anything else? I'm getting my Fascinate on Friday!!!

Nothing to flash, it's an OTA update. The link is just a link to the Engadget story. And looks like GB 2.3.3 is being pushed out not 2.3.4. Don't know the difference, but I know there is a 2.3.4 out there.

its so ridiculous how fast manufacturers push out new devices. yay you have the latest and greatest! and you just shat all over everyone who's had your phone for a year. wtf man. ha. i had an eris, and really don't think this phone should ever be in the same boat as that phone. never should've bought that eris, should've gone straight to the Droid 1. so does no one do GSM to CDMA conversions? They did a couple for my Eris (thank you punk.kaos) and for the Droid 1, the "Mobile Networks" option was usually the only thing not working eventually. I'm new the fascinate, actually not getting mine till tomorrow, but I'm really eager to get a truly open phone. my droid 2 was killing me bro. oh well, so long as we get gingerbread eventually. and honestly if CM7 is ready before the end of June, who needs an OTA? Jelly Bean Update Rolling Out Tomorrow

If a provider has set a time and date so close, I don't see why it wouldn't be released tomorrow. Yes, it is possible that the release may be delayed but I can't think why. Manufacturers have had early access to Jelly Bean so it's about time some devices received updates.
EDIT : There have been no other official claims of an official release. Mid-July is all people had to go on. But people started making silly guesses. Many thought it would be released on the 4th or the 13th. But there was little reason for this.

Difference to ICS: We have an announced release-date (more or less exact). Last time they shipped 4.0.3 as a surprise, pulled it after a few days and then remained silent for 3 months until 4.0.4 came out.

I dont get why everyone feels the need to open up a new thread about this instead of going to the countdown thread! You guys seriously need to think about your lifes. Get out, do something fun and for god'S sake leave your computer or xda untouched for a day. It's really not healthy to be so obsessed about JB. I'm excited, too but i'd rather go for a sunbath than sitting in front of my computer waiting for an ota which does not come.
Why are you even so excited about what a carrier or a french blog says? I don't give a single sh... about them. I'm just interested in what google says. Don't get your hopes up cause of this! You will most likely just be disappointed. Same thing with these screenshots about the 4.0.4 ota with this date. Everyone is so damn sure that JB will be pushed when we hit this date. So, OTA is expected to hit us FOR SURE!!! every day since like the 8th...

Motorola Announcement: No ICS for Atrix/Photon

Motorola updated their update page today: forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Now says:
ATRIX 4G (MB860): Gingerbread (Android 2.3) rollout began in July 2011. Further plans coming soon.
It was supossed that Atrix 4G was receiving ICS for third quarter (which end this september 30).
I'm really disapointed with Motorola/Google. They says this after they promised an update on February.
"Further plans coming soon."
Still some hope. Let's keep optimism on the Atrix XDA board...
Also its status has been "refreshed"... Which means there's activity.
LOL. I just checked the page last night and it still had the "In development, rollout begins in Q3" message. Now it's as you say.
Ah well. In the long run, it's just a phone that does cool stuff. Many thanks to everyone who figured out how to decrypt the bootloader, open up the capabilities this phone has, and were willing to show the rest of us how to do it. In another year the majority of us will be on another phone anyway, it's the nature of the tech beast.
sad story..., they did change the Canada one to staying on 2.3 and the EU (had no update before) one to the same as the US one
That's a shame. I wanted the goodies ics brings with hardware acceleration and a better use of my lapdock. Hopefully they at least release drivers/kernels so the devs can make it work.

The title of this thread is very, very inaccurate. Come on man, Moto never said that the update was really cancelled! I don't hate Junior Members, but seriously, I'm pissed right now.
+1
At most, it should say that Atrix update is no longer is Q3...

You're missing the ending tag on that quote.
EDIT: It also messes it up if somebody else wants to quote you. :/

What a horrible title. The fact that a bunch of other phones say "Will remain on Gingerbread" should tell you that the update isn't cancelled yet for the USA Atrix because it says "Further plans coming soon". At this point they are obviously way behind the Q3 date they said before, but if it they weren't working on it I doubt they would tell us that plans were coming later.
Read this article. Soni says they are talking with the different teams and establishing dates they know they can hit. That article is about the Bionic which was planned for early Q3 and now they're going to get it in Q4. Like Soni said, they will be sticking to the dates they set and obviously the Atrix isn't as far along as we all hoped and they can't accurately project a date. Wait until it says all Atrix phones are staying on Gingerbread before posting something like this.

I don't get why the Canadian update was cancelled. This means that I'll never get to see stock Motoblur ICS. And ICSBlur actually seems to be good, unlike GingerBlur (not to be confused with the custom ROM).
Well.. time for some questioning.. especially after receiving this only a few days ago:
"Dear Ryan,
Thanks for reaching out to Motorola.
I do apologize but we currently do not have any notifications regarding the exact release date of the official Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Motorola ATRIX 4G. It is scheduled to roll out as an over the air upgrade this third quarter of 2012. You will receive a notification on your device once the upgrade is already available for download. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience."
This next response oughta be interesting.
No custom!

Here's a tip: Adding mouths to your emotes doesn't make them mean more. :silly:
There's already a Atrix ICS thread, please use this one for this topic.
