[Q] Moving from CM7 to CM9 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I had cm7 installed on sd card and now i want to try PA CM9 on same card. I formmated sd card and used verygreen's image to put ParanoidAndroid zip on sd card and then inserted it in nook. I got errors telling me that it can't find cm-update files. I thought it would normally install new rom but i guess i had to first wipe old informations from nook from cm7. What should i do now?
Thank you in advance

You have to rename the file .. add "update-" to the front of it (without quotes but with dash) and flash again. You don't have to wipe anything..

Thx that worked but now it's stucked at black screen after universal boot screen. Last time i did this with cm7 it went perfect smooth.

Are you using the latest PA? I found that the version prior to the latest did not work on SD installs. And PA is kind of particular and you may want to wipe your card and start fresh.

[Q] Newbie wants to update cm7

Thanks to this forum, i was able to get 7.0.0 stable to run great on my Android. There are a few bugs that seems like the new stable covers. This is my first time updating, I'm sorry that this is extremely rudimentary but I am unsure. Do I just delete the current .zip of 7.0.0 and place the new one in? If so, do i have to boot from sd card again so everything can compile? Or is it a little more complicated?
Did you install it on nand or Sd ?!
i installed it on SD, i can still boot into stock nook.
Anybody help out? Looking to do the update! Just swap .zip files and voila? Or more?
Copy the new update (stable or nightly) to the boot partition of your SD, then insert the SD and do a recovery boot. Verygreen's instructions work fine, I refer to them if I forget!!:

so i auto updated from 7.0 to 7.02 and now wireless doesn't work....any ideas? thx
ps-i also updated clockwork at the same time (which worked, now 4.2.0.0)
nevermind i rebooted the router

Sometimes a simple reboot of your Nook will fix wifi issues, try turning on wifi as soon as it boots up.

Can't Flash a New ROM

Hi,
So I got my girlfriend this gift basically right when it came out. I rooted it, and flashed CM 7.1 RC1 (literally came out that day) a long time ago.
She gave it to me yesterday to get her PDF's on there. I opened the market and nothing would pop up except for the like 5 total apps, while the Browser was working 100% fine. I go to my apps in the market and try downloading updates and they kept failing. I was frustrated, so I downloaded the latest Cyanogen Nightly and Gapps. I updated CWM to 6.0.3.1, then made a backup of the existing ROM. I went into recovery, and tried finding the Nightly and Gapps I downloaded, but the SD Card would never mount. I'm not sure how I can fix this.
Please help, thanks a ton!
Jimmy
hmmm what about putting the stuff in the phone memory and flash there

Since you did it so long ago, do you remember if you installed the CM7 to emmc or SD? That may be your issue.
And how did you get 6.0.3.1? Rom Manager? That may be your issue too.

Thanks for the responses! To be 100% honest, I don't remember how I rooted/flashed. I know I had to buy an SD card for it though, and the SD card is labeled BOOT
I did get 6.0.3.1 through ROM Manager.

Do you need the SD inserted for it to boot to your CM7? If so, you installed to SD and with an SD installation, you do not use CWM to install upgrades. That is why you cannot see the zip you downloaded. If you want to upgrade a CM7 SD install to CM10, you need to start over with a newly burned SD. The old SD setup is not compatible with CM10. Use my guide linked in my signature.
You might just want to put CM10 on internal memory, replacing whatever is there. Just download the new CM zip to emmc with CM7, boot to emmc CWM, remove the SD, wipe data/factory reset and flash the new CM zip using the "install from SD/choose from internal memory" option. Then you need to flash the right gapps to match. Then reboot. Once you are sure everything is working, you can format your old SD with SDFormatter so it can be used as a normal data SD. Get it free on the web.

Before flashing, did you do a full wipe?
CWM > Wipe data & factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and wipe your system partition?
I have a Nook Color as well, but I'm running CM7. I read somewhere that your CWM must be version 6.xxx to properly flash CM10 based roms. I believe that is your problem. Btw, CM7 has better performance on this old device.
flashing
i actually never flashed clockwork. all i did was use winimage to partition the card, then just dragged and dropped gapps and cm 10.1.2 20130815 nightly. then it broke after installing a few apps. ive been looking for CWM to wipe everything. from wut i understand CWM wipes it COMPLETELY unlike the 2 stock methods i used before. its like it just wont boot from the sd card anymore. it installs the CM but after its done it just boots up to nook. if you or anyone can tell me where to find CWM it would be much appreciated. i dont understand their site layout and the youtube directions dont have working links for CWM. any ideas? and thx so much for the response. i know from reading now that cm7 was wut i shud have installed instead of the newer extremely unstable cm9 and cm 10.2.
ALSO, im reading about CWM software is related to SD card size? i only have a 32gb sd which is not mentioned in any of the tutorials on how to use CWM. does it rly matter?

Sure thing. Here are the instructions for flashing CWM to your internal flash using a microSD card. You'll need a microSD card reader for this. Look on Amazon for the IOGear MicroSD card reader, I bought it recently for $6 in total.
Read this thread thoroughly, it is simple enough. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12797652
Also, I would suggest you install CM7 MiRaGe rom instead of stock CM7. It performs really well, and I have it overclocked to 1.2GHz stable. Here is the MiRaGe thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
If ya need more help, leave a reply.

Nah, it works man. There's just a little bug you need to take care of. Go to the Mirage thread again, on the bottom of the first post, you'll see it says "wifi disconnecting? Read <link>". It's an easy fix. I had it too.

HELP BRICKED nook hd+

I used cwm and attempted to install cm 10.1 on nook hd. everything seemed fine, loaded OS, loaded gapps, loaded twrp, loaded backup cwm program. then rebooted to try and use and screen stalls on the cyanogen mod screen and stays there forever. tried even reformatting sd to a boot disc meant to factory restore to 1.4.2 but it just goes the same screen. it wont even load from sd card boot file, goes to cyanogen bootloader screen and stays there.
please help i can only get to twrp recovery program but can't figure out how to do ANYTHING to restore from there. please help, tried to do my daughters nook and now i bombed it.
i have read many other threads on this but none work. can only get to twrp.

Restore to 1.4.2? That is Nook Color or Tablet, not HD/HD+. And HD or HD+? Title says HD+ and text says HD.

sorry i meant factory install
bn_142_factory_recovery.zip
and made a bootable sd card but no luck with that either. it jumps to the same bootloader screen before the sd boot loads.
i REALLY appreciate your help here!
or is there a way to load anything from the pc via the cable?
are you familiar with twrp ? It seems to be the only interface i can even get into. otherwise just nook boot screen then the bootloader arghh

for the record it is a 16 gb hd + nook, here is the list of programs i installed on the cwm before i rebooted and it started getting stuck on that screen:
cm-10.1-20130904-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard
gapps-jb-20130812-signed
cm-10.1.3-RC2-ovation
NookHD-HDplus-stock-enable-Unknown-Sources-rev0-(09.08.13)
NookHD-HDplus-Universal-Root-rev3-(09.10.13)
i watched many videos and checked threads and these seemed good from multiple sources.
then i have tried this and a couple other things to get back running but really can only get TWRP recovery to fire up. : (

You are mixing up Nook Tablet and Nook HD+ and emmc install and SD install. And stock. No wonder it won't boot. I'm sure that video you watched was for the Nook Tablet.
Edit: you should not have flashed that ...ovation-sdcard. That was for an SD install.
You should not have flashed the noohdplus...zips, those are for stock.
The 1.4.2 factory was for Nook Tablet
8gb-16g_cwm... was for Nook Tablet.
See what a mess you created?

alright i see that was wrong, i wish there was a common set of things that had worked on there.
can you clarify this:
You should not have flashed the noohdplus...zips, those are for stock.
as for these I wasnt able to boot anything with them anyhow so i doubt they had a negative effect.
The 1.4.2 factory was for Nook Tablet
8gb-16g_cwm... was for Nook Tablet.
either way clearly got something off here. can you suggest anything to boot from twrp or an sd card. anything that works on this particular tablet? sounds like we have the same one.
do you have any ideas?

To fix the mess you created, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and flash a plain stock ROM from item 6 using a bootable SD. If you don't have a working one, that thread has one too. Then do a factory reset via recovery too. Then take the SD out and boot back to stock. Once you have that working, boot back to SD recovery and flash the rc2 and gapps zips you listed above. Then factory reset again before you boot and and remove the SD and you should be ok.

ok awesome, I trust this is the bootable sd you referred to:
NookHDplus-bootable-SD-TWRP-2.6-for-emmc-BOOTFILES-rev0-(09.15.13).rar - [Click for QR Code] (6.67 MB, 9 views\
so i followed your instructions. reformatted my sd card via sd formatter, set partition 1 as active and applied on minitool partition wizard.
extracted the 5 files from the above .rar file to the sd.
booted the nook with new sd card in it. still got stuck on the bootloader screen,
rebooted and got into TWRP but can't find any way to open or execute any files on that sd card. (NOT REALLY SURE HOW to USE iT)
anyhow this would be great if i had any way to get into the cwm flashing program. I can't get anything BUT twrp open or the stalled boot screen for "cyanoboot universal bootloader", then it goes into twrp.
what would be my options? Thanks again I really am at my end, really nice to have a pro help. . : )

Ok so I managed to figure out how to flash zip "NookHDplus - factory - 2.1.1 - plain - stock.zip" through twrp, it said "successful"
So i tried to reboot, same result. But then removed sd card and tried to reboot. Now it just keeps resetting on the nook black screen, but DOESNT get to the bootloader screen so that is different. Nice to have a change anyhow.
So now that I can flash zip's, how might i find the nook recovery tool you mentioned ? seems to be the only step i haven't gotten through.

Did you factory reset before you booted as I said in the post above? And I did tell you to take the SD out before booting.
What nook recovery tool? I never said that. Maybe what you misunderstood was 'recovery' means either TWRP or CWM. They are both recovery.
Your problem is you don't read, you just skim. Read carefully and if you don't understand something, ask before moving on.

OK so first off! THANK YOU SO MUCH! back to factory settings and it seems to be working. truly couldnt have done it without you.
now so I dont **** it up again, would this be the proper order to flash these files in using the current boot card and cwm.

I'm using cm10.2 and it's running perfectly.
Before flash another ROM (Cyanogenmod) you'll need to wipe your actual system. So in wipe menu, wipe everything (except SD card if you did a backup from your stock rom).
Then flash 1) cm10....-ovation.zip 2) gapps...zip.
Do you still have a recovery on your Nook? I mean, if you remove SD card, can you boot to recovery pressing power+n button?
My earlier post told you exactly what to do. Flash rc2 and gapps and wipe/factory reset. Nothing else.

thanks again,
so i want to make sure i got this right before proceeding. dont want to screw it up again.
so i tried to do the cmw recovery tool by holding nook and power button but it just rebooted. then tried pressing both but letting go of power button. no result. So I guess I should flash this file first to reinstall the recovery on the nook no?

So for these 2 files you don't have to do anything? HOw do they work if you don't mind me asking?

thanks again,
so i want to make sure i got this right before proceeding. dont want to screw it up again.
so i tried to do the cmw recovery tool by holding nook and power button but it just rebooted. then tried pressing both but letting go of power button. no result. So I guess I should flash this file first to reinstall the recovery on the nook no?
cm-10.1.3-RC2-ovation
Then when that is done flash this 10.2 mod -
cm-10.2-20130913-NIGHTLY-ovation
then gaps:

What is so hard about my instructions? Flash rc2 and gapps and wipe/factory reset. Nothing else.
That RC2 is not a recovery. It is a CM10.1 ROM, which is what I recommend you run instead of CM10.2.
Do not flash CM10.2 nightly zip. RC2 is what you want.
The gapps is right.
And yes, wipe/factory reset after flashing those two. Then remove the SD and reboot.
Do not flash the NookHD-HDplus zips. They are for stock. CM does not need them. CM is already rooted and the other is a setting in CM already.
Since you have recovery on SD, you do not need it on internal memory. You will just get yourself into trouble with it. So don't do the power/n key thing. It won't work.

[Q] How do I remove CWM 3.2.01& replace w/ 6.0.1.2?

About a year ago I installed Cyagenomod using colockwork mod 3.2.01 (not sure the version of cyagenomod, but the android guy on the loading screen was on a skateboard if that helps) onto my nook color. It worked for a while, but then would get caught up in the load screen. I already had another tablet, so I just set it aside. Now my nephew is learning to read, and I'd like to get the tablet running again and deck it out with apps that can help us help him. The problem is, no matter what I do or which tutorial I use, when it comes time to remove the SD card and reboot to Cyagenomod 10, the device loads to the CWM recovery screen for version 3.2.01. I have tried following the tutorials and using different versions of CWM, but the old version seems to be stuck on there and blocking anything else from loading on startup. Most recently I tried 6.1.0.2. Here are the steps that I took:
Wrote CWM image file to sd card
Added CM 10 zip file
Added GAPPs zip
Added CWM zip file
Inserted sd card and turned on device
Loaded to CWM 6 from the sd
Flashed CM, then GAPPS, then CWM zips in this order per tutorial instructions
Did factory reset per instructions- which seemed a little weird, but I haven't tried skipping this step as all tutorials advise it.
Removed sd card and replaced with blank card
Rebooted
As with everything else I've tried, it booted right back to the old version of cwm. I've tried restoring the original software, and even tried TWRP, How do I remove the old version so that the new version can work it's magic?
Thanks! And go easy on me, I just follow instructions well. I'm only marginally knowledgeable when it comes to what I'm actually doing.

It sounds like you are in a recovery bootloop. Go to my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and read about it. I also have a newer version of CWM made for internal memory that you can flash to replace the 3.2.0.1 version on internal.
