it just froze up, I reset a couple times, then tried power+vol up then.. - Acer Iconia A500

Not sure what the heck happened to my device. I was using it when it just froze up outta nowhere. I tried resetting it a couple times but it wouldnt get past the android screen. Hard Reset, nothing. So I tried going into APX mode, power+vol up(idk why) then, it wouldnt get past the 'Acer' screen after that. So I let it charge overnight now it doesn't show anything at all. The power button does light up, but thats it. what the heck just happened?
NOTE: I lent out my sdcard with the update.zip in it. would putting my sdcard back in fix the problem or is it bigger than that?
is this thread a possible solution to my problem? problems seem similiar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874345
can someone please help me find out what happened with this, I really dont wanna call Acer n send it in if I can fix the problem myself

Eh, well, need to know the condition of the tab. Sounds like it is stuck in APX mode. (Black display, white PWR light). Is this the case?
Generally, you might be able to PWR down, by press and hold the pwr button for several seconds. Then try to boot it normally.
Oh, BTW, Pwr and Vol+ is not how to get it to APX. That usually gets the stock bootloader which really isn't much of anything unless you have an update.zip on your ext sd card.
Were you completely stock? (not rooted or custom rom)
MD

Yes that's the condition, black screen white pwr light. It is rooted, thats it. Running ICS 4.0. I wont be able to get my sd card until wednesday so if I need that update.zip file I'll have to wait a few more days. Its completely off right now, I tried powering on and off a few times and I got nothing just a blank screen. Im unsure, what to try next??

Yeah, you're going to need an SD card. And make sure the tab is charged.
In the meantime, you can try a couple things just to see it you can get a different response. However, understand this.
1. You can probably forget any personal data that's stored on it. Photos, downloads, music, etc. Just to prepare you.
2. You probably have a corrupted bootloader partition. How it happens, with a normally functioning tab, nobody really knows.
You can try doing a data wipe. Usually we would wait till you get an SD card, but I'm curious if you can get anything on the display. To do this, with the tablet off, Press and hold PWR, while at the same time, continiously cycle your rotation lock left and right, quickly until you see "erasing user data" or something similar on the display.
Another thing, manually put it into APX mode. This involves using a paper clip, and press and hold the "reset" button near the USB port, then press and hold PWR. Count to 4 and release PWR, and 1 second later release the paperclip. Then plug your tablet into the PC, and see if the PC loads the drivers for it. You should already have installed the Acer USB drivers. If not, get them from the Acer site.
Understand, your chances of getting it going again, are less than 50/50. But, we all will give it a shot.
MD

This is exactly the situation I'm in... Black screen, White power light...
I was in the middle of an app, when tablet rebooted, wouldn't boot back up..
I was able to get into CWM recovery... investigated, and found that /system wouldn't mount... So, I was prepared to re-flash, so I first went to do a nandroid backup of my data folder... I also had an old nandroid backup, so I decided to restore that... After I did that, I couldn't even get into recovery anymore...
I've tried setting my tablet into apx mode, and trying to flash, but they always seem to freeze at "uploading image" (both with afterota unbrick and blackthund3r's tool)
Now, blackthund3r's tool will actually get the acer logo to show up, with "Entering download mode...", so that leads me to think the tablet isn't completely shot? It just gets stuck during the upload image...
Tried the erasing data as suggested by MD, but no luck, just black screen...
What is the sdcard method that you are speaking of? Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks in advance
---------
Edit:
Tried placing update.zip on sdcard for flashing, tried turning on the tablet with volume down...No joy
Hopefully someone has some other ideas for me? Thanks again in advance.
---------
Edit 2:
After a day of searching, finally came across this post.
Fixed and saved my tablet... Whew!

DREA100 and the infamous Triangle of death?

Ok.. So a friend of mine suddenly got a triangle with the exclamation mark picture on his phone. That's all it boots up to. So, he took it to T-mobile, they told him it's FUBAR, and sold him a new phone.
The fact that the thing boots to a recovery mode tells me that there's SOME way to un-FUBAR this phone. My friend is too technologically inadiquate to attempt to do any modifying, so I'm going to assume he was at whatever firmware level would hve been blasted out to T-mobile as of last Friday 01/15/2010.
If I boot the phone normally, it gives me the TriAngle. I pop open the keyboard and hit alt-L and the I get the Android System Recovery menu. at the bottom I get "E:CAn't open /cache/recovery/command"
I've spent all day bouncing around this forum, and many like it, downloaded all sorts of G1 fimwares trying to go back to RC29, RC28, 30, 33.. gah! The latest one I'm trying to update to is "signed-kila-ota-116143-prereq.TC4-RC19+RC28+RC29.zip" Which i rename to update.zip . I hit alt-L, select 'update from SD card' It goes through:
--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update package....
Installation aborted.
That's it... no more log than that.
I've done the Alt-W, and Alt-S.. wiped cache partition. I think playing around with the recent firmwares might be fun, but I'd like to get this bad boy reset back to factory defaults. I've read the forums here on how to do that.. but all of the procedures fail.
I can get Windows 7 to recognize the phone, but I cannot access the sd card while it is in the phone. I've been transfering data to it by taking the sdcard out, and putting it into a known good SD card reader. I've formatted the sdcard to FAT16, and FAT32 quick and not quick.
Seriously.. why is this so complicated? Now I need some serious digging assistance. Is there an interface that will allow me to directly talk to this phone via the USB cable? How can I force an firmware onto it? Clearly something is functional, or I would get no I/O. How can I get this silly thing back to where it was? I know this thread seems like a redundant one, but as far as I can tell, its not. The typical procedures posted here don't seem to work, but I'll be happy to run through any steps y'all suggest. I'll resign that it's been bricked if that's really whats happened.. but I'm not ready to throw this unit away yet.
Ask questions.. let me answer them. I know this team can get this phone working again.
Thanks y'all.

bingo !
sounds like your friend tried to flash something he shouldn't have. or messed around with stuff he shouldn't.
as far as taking it to the store, and accepting their suggestion to "GIVE US YOUR MONEY!" that was a mistake.
the phone is likely fine, and maybe you'll buy it from him for cheap, then fix, resell/use.
good luck, should be easy.
The "press camera and power to get to bootloader" procedure. I've tried holding the Camera while pressing power over and over and all I get is the triangle. However if I press power and the "back" button (swooping arrow to the left), I'll get the bars screen, and a Gray screen telling me to press send to restore.... Which is all good, but there's no progress or any thing to indicate that i've done something by pressing the send button.(based on cell phone standards, I'm assuming "send" is the green "call" button.
Is this normal?
No yeah.. he gave me the G1.. its mine. I just need to fix the little bugger.. .. well.. then laugh at him
Ok.. one more day (well ok.. couple hours) of fiddling with this thing, and i'm begining to wonder if Microsoft was involved. I'm not able to get this poor G1 to do anything new. I tried using a different SD card, hoping perhaps the one I got with it was bad... no dice. camera + power doesn't do anything useful.
I can connect it to the PC.. but i can't see the data card that way. adb devices reads no output, so its not correctly attaching to the PC (tried Windows 7 32bit, and Windows XP 64bit).. There's gotta be a good way to force a known good image onto this silly thing.
Is it probable that the internal memory has gotten corrupt somehow? I know someone out there's got the golden suggestion, please do tell if you do. I'd really like to use this phone.
--Rob
If you can get into fast boot (the tri color screen) there are ways to flash it... try getting into your tri color, then plugging in the USB cable and see if it switches from Serial 0 to USB at the bottom, if so you are golden to flash using the fast boot method.
There are guides around on how exactly to do that, as well a couple places that you can download the official RUU that will do all the hard work for you!
gah.. nothing doing. I can hit Back and Home, and end up with the tri-color screen for about 1/5th of a second, then a gray screen saying:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press Send to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel.
At this point, the unit is dead. I can remove the battery, and continue on my little quest.. but hitting *any* key at all (including the Send key) will not produce any sort of output. I've tried pressing Send one time, then setting the phone down for a full hour (watched a netflix show) nothing. I can't power it off either w/o removing the battery.
I would throw in the towel.. but from all the research i've been doing, it seems as if this one is behaving in a manner in which other forum users havne't posted. Maybe by continuing to try options and post results, a positive outcome will come out, and someone else who has a G1 behaving this way will have an easier time.
... or y'all can tell me that its toast and to bugger off.. ha ha.. either way.. I continue to google. If you can think of anything, please toss it out.
OH!.. tried an RUU.. found one called. RhodiumSPLRelocker Looks promising.. but can't see the device when attached to the PC... yeah.. guess the phone has to have a functioning OS before that will happen...
You would want a Dream RUU... I looked around a bit and couldn't find one. Maybe someone has a quick link?
Double check that your SD card is formatted FAT32 and see if you can get ADB to see it when on that greay screen.
I've formatted the SD card in FAT32 multiple times.. I even questioned if my Windows 7 32bit would do it, and formatted it on a laptop running XP 64bit. adb doesn't seem to see it ever.
I don't get why I can't get it into fast boot. I've been looking on ebay for dream G1s with broken screens.. heh.. I guess i'm preparing for the worst. really sad, becasue this G1 was actually pretty well taken care of. My friend didn't do anything he shouldn't. HE woke up one morning and it was like this. He lives out in the country.. so he gets pretty spotty signal. I'm wondering if T-Mobile didn't push out an update, and it got interrupted by signal loss.
By the by... I've been doing all this work w/o a SIM card. Does that matter?

its not the green send button -- its the red end button
see below extracted from http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/05/how-to-unroot-your-t-mobile-g1/
Load the DreaIMG.nbh File
1. Download the Original DreaIMG.nbh file:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XXSQ0T7W
2. If the file downloaded above downloads as a .Zip file, please unzip it first then put the DreamIMG.nbh file that is inside on the SD card, NOT in any folder. (If you did Section I the phone is off still, take out the memory card, put it in the MicroSD adapter and plug it into your computer to transfer the file over, since your G1 won’t turn on right now if you did Section I above. Otherwise if you did not need to do Section I above, then you can just put it on the SD card normally using the usb cable and the phone).
3. Turn the phone off if it is on.
4. Turn on the phone by holding the Camera button and the End key until the bootloader screen turns on.
5. Hit the End key to start the update. DO NOT INTERUPT THIS PROCESS.
6. Once it is done, hit the trackball to restart the phone. You now are on the stock firmware RC29

You mention that you can access fastboot by pressing the back button while turning it on, isn't that how the hero gets into fastboot? maybe your friend tried flashing a rom that was meant for the hero. if you have access to fastboot you should be able to flash a new image from there, just place the image file in the root of your card and follow the fastboot instructions
Also if fastboot isn't doing it for you have you tried adb? if you don't know what that is look it up I've seen a couple guides on how to do it and they are really detailed.

[q] help! Bricked samsung intercept!

Last year(late 2010, maybe mid November), I rooted my phone and flashed recovery with no problem s at all. Some time after that I added Apps2SD and that went smoothly with no problems for about a week. I purchased an 8 GB SD Card for more storage room and after I partitioned it and switched the cards my phone started acting up so i rebooted it. After that I was stuck in a boot loop, so i tried to flash it back to stock but it wouldn't take to it no matter how I tried, whether it be through recovery or SW Update. So then I tried Odin Multi loader(cant remember which version but at the time I made sure it was the one meant for the Intercept) after I flashed it with the Stock through Odin, the phone bricked. Now it will not turn on in any way(recovery or other) the only thing it does do is vibrate when I plug it in to a computer, and it will occasionally show battery life through the touch screen and keyboard buttons by lighting them, but as soon as the it is unplugged it is a brick. I see the little bit of functionality as a little bit of to be able to fix this phone whether through ADB or another function but I desperately need help with this. Can someone please help me fix this phone?
note: I currently have a Samsung Transform as my main phone so if the Intercept can't be helped then it's not that big of a problem.
I have the same problem! Please help!
When you root a phone you put the rom, and recovery onto the sd card. changing sd cards disrupts this process. Put the old sd card in and tell me what happens.
The phone doesnt come on at all
see if you can get it into download mode with the battery out.
Pull battery
connect to computer with usb
vol down + camera + end
If you get into download mode this way flash the stock.tar using SWUpdater.
Nope, it doesnt work, thx though
Ok I've got the same problem with my intercept as well, So i just like to add (maybe its just me) that when i plug my phone to the computer the phone shows that its still functions right (without the screen on), I'm able to make calls, and receive them as well (with the touch of the answer button) but just the screen doesn't turn on, AT ALL!, so KJON i don't know if your having the same problem as me but I'm just a noob and i wouldn't know what to do. But there's some ammo if you need it.
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM! i dont even know where /sdcard/sdx/zip/ is!
My phone is also a samsung transform and not and intercept and whenever i press vol down+ Power, only the function buttons at the bottoms light up but not the screen
i am a noob.
help?
noooooob here...i didnt wanna start another thread since i have this same problem, so i hope someone reads this..
couple days ago i bricked my sprint intercept i was using SWu and forgot to take the Binary files for the Moment out so now i cant get my phone to DL mode, ive been searching since saturday night and have tried every Button combo posted and nothing, my phone will not turn on and ofcourse it isnt recognized by my pc BUT, ive noticed that only when its plugged in to the computer after trying to power it up several times it´ll vibrate then the 4 touch buttons will react to either the call or end button, also it makes the low battery sound and if i press the camera button it makes the volume sound but i CANT get to download mode, can i bring my phone back or is it done with? help please! and thanks in advance...
well, i would say boot into rrecovery by making the phone off either power button, or remove and replace battery.
next, you will need to press and hold in order: power/end call, call, and volume down.. this should boot recovery mode.
lastly, use the red scroll device to go to reset facory defaults or factory recovery, use common sense while looking. select with clicking and use arrow back button to go back to recovery main, then reboot to system. easy as pie.
Have you tried ODIN or ADB?
I have flashed the Intercept numerous times, soft bricked more than once, I was always able to recover using either the stock bootloader, CWM recovery, or flashing the ROM/Kernel directly using ODIN or ADB.
If you are still having these issues drop me a line and I'll gather some links together that should get you back up and running.
If the phone will not boot at all, even with a charged battery, I would definately try contacting Virgin Mobile and escalating the issue. I've had plenty of luck replacing devices claiming that the device just dropped dead without notice. They are usually good about sending out a replacement phone, and on rare occasions even giving you an upgraded unit if they are out of stock.
Good luck!
Did you use Odin or the swupdater?
Bug difference. Sounds like there's a missing boot loader.

not sure if anyone knew about the hard reset, i contacted acer and played dumb, though i told them what happened.
i was instructed to
Power down the device
hold Vol Up + Power for 3 sec
continue holding Vol up, and keep switch the screen lock back and forth until "erasing cache" comes up on the acer screen
at which point you stop and let it run its course.
said it would take 30 minutes. i fell asleep, 2hrs later i checked it, still same. recontacted acer, another tech said to do the default hard restart with the push pin
worked like a charm
in process of rooting, installing CWM and making backup lol

Did you get it from a local retail location? If so, I would just march back there with my receipt and not give too many details - i was working on a picture and it broke and I have no idea what is wrong, etc - they should just give you a new one.
Have you tried clearing the cache? There is a combo with holding power / volume up when booting and using the rotation lock switch, not quite sure how it is done but i think you just hold both and flip the switch like mad - totally sure I have seen the process posted here somewhere.
If you got it via online order, you still should be able to just return it.
Or call acer - they might be able to work some magic.
Best of luck, hope you get it going or at least get a new one. Really sounds like you have a defective unit, I rooted mine the day after I bought it, have had it for nearly two months and multiple rootings/unrootings/rom flashes and have had no issues at all.

A500 suddenly died

Hi all,
I thought I'd consult the brains trust to see if anyone thinks this is salvageable. Was using my A500 about 2 hours ago, suddenly the screen powered off. Thinking nothing of it, I held down the power button to restart it. When powering back on, nothing appears to happen except for the power button lighting up. No screen on, no vibe, nothing except the power light on.
Tried power cycling a few times to no avail. Tried the reset button. Tried the Vol+ Power and Rotation switch reset. Nothing.
Out of morbid curiousity, I plugged it into the PC and switched it on and I get an APX driver being installed. So, clearly something is happening here.
It has done this once before and came back to life of its own accord very shortly afterwards, this time it's been dead for quite some time.
Any suggestions? It's well out of warranty now, so I doubt Acer would be interested in it at all.

In the Dev threads, or possibly Q&A, there is a thread called "stuck in APX mode". In there I believe are some steps to see if you can recover.
But, if you're in APX mode, you could probably try NVFlashing the bootloader and recovery the old fashioned way manually.
But look up that APX thread first. Will probably have the answer. I'll see if I can find it in a little while, if you don't find it first.

Thanks MD. I looked up the threads you suggested, and after a lot of screwing around I have installed the APX drivers and used blackthund3r's APX Flash Util 0.3 (The link is broken to the current version) to attempt a recovery of my tab.
Its now sitting at an Acer screen, "Entering Acer Download Mode" while the flash util is sitting at:
Nvflash started
[resume mode]
It's been there for about 10 minutes now, no progress to report. Is it worth just sitting it out, or now that the damn tab shows SOME signs of life, can I just restart it and reset to factory?
And then most bizarre of all. I declared no progress, rebooted it. It went back to APX mode.
Re-ran the blackthund3r tool, it didnt do much so I bailed that. Restarted tab and attempted to load recovery (vol + and power) and it booted normally.
What the hell...

And then most bizarre of all. I declared no progress, rebooted it. It went back to APX mode.

erm for now i would make sure you have all backups of data, cpud etc,.. just incase. you can just sit em on your computer i always try to keep a nandroid of all 3 of my devices each month or so.:good:
edit: and of course keep the link for the thread MD recommended.
Gee. Sounds exactly like mine....
The only thing I haven't tried is an update .zip, but I don't hold out much hope.
Considering parting out at this point....
Yeah, I dont have high hopes that it will last a whole lot longer. Up to this point it has been running Acer OTA updates only, no custom ROMs and no root.
I restarted the tab a little while ago and it went back into APX mode again and stayed there. Some more furious button mashing and attempted restore-mode boots, and it booted normally.
I made the point of wiping it this time using the Vol+ & Power & Rotation Lock trick and its been ok so far.

I have a cousin in Jamaica. She might possibly help (chicken foot and some frogs blood...voodoo you know)
Here's What I think.
You got some corrupt data or a partially bad devblock. This might explain the strange behavior on boot.
Like the tab really doesn't know how to boot.
Personally I would do 1 of 2 things at this point. Either;
1. Root that thing, and try running Timmy Deans root back to 3.2. This should reset your partitions back to normal. Then work your way back to an ICS rooted, Bootloader, and custom rom.
2. Leave it alone, and don;t turn the tab off. Clearly some partitions are messed up at this point. The toggle of the lock usually wipes user data. But the core issue is still there.
If it were me, I would pull out the nuclear missile and go for it all.

Tried the update.zip - nada
Tried timmiedean yesterday, went into Acer Download mode OK, failed....
If dolps is like mien, the first time he tries to go into recovery, it will crash again...
It's baaaack!
Tried blackthunder flash again, failed.
Went to turn off to get out of APX, and it booted!
Now boots, boots to recovery and boots to primary.
I have no explanation.
We will see.
I am suspicious....

First, is this a SOD?
I can kill it by booting into recovery and get it back by using Blackthunder flash tool to go into APX and letting it sit for 20 minutes or so. Close the program, unplug, reboot and it is back. I would like to use timmiedean (td) and go back to square 1, but it fails at the image detect ( displays ICS 4.0.3 Civato as the current image, a red X for the new image). Has td been proven to work reverting from ICS? Will a boot recovery reflash and a new ROM flash solve this? Is there another way to get out of ICS back to HC?
Any suggestions/comments welcome!
EDIT: I flashed FLEXxx V4. Shut it off, problem still there....
Really frustrated. Trying to use the timmiedean tool, but it requires that the unit be shut off in the middle of the process, which kills it. Does anyone know the whereabouts of the blackthund3r revert tool, or the .apx package for his flash tool. I can't find it...
I'm done with this one. On Ebay for parts.... GONE!!!
Have an A100 now, rooted, unlocked,. on Relix
1 more A500 coming next week

Phone boots to blue screen

My G2 suddenly just stopped working yesterday. When I try to power it on the phone either freezes shortly after the boot screen, gets to the homescreen then shuts off, or boots to an all blue screen. I can access TWRP but haven't been able to fix it with anything I've found. My pc isn't recognizing the phone so don't know if I can flash another rom. Also tried factory reset with no luck. Any help please this is driving me crazy!!!
The same thing just happened to me! Someone please help us! IS there a solution to this?

Ok, since there is little to no information out there I thought I would share how I created and fixed this problem.
I received a new phone under warranty because of a failing sim card reader. Naturally, the first thing I did once I received it was root it. Next, I thought I would be slick and use flashify to flash a custom recovery (TWRP). Little did I know, with the new version of Android, our phones have a locked bootloader. I freaked out when I saw some weird error messages about it and tried to power off the device in the middle of it booting. BIG MISTAKE. In hindsight, I am assuming that it was re-flashing the factory recovery when I powered it off.
It gave me a solid blue screen for two hours, unless I held the power button for 10 seconds, which would just repeat the process from black screen to solid blue screen repeatedly. I tried to reboot into recovery for 2 hours by holding volume down and power. 2 HOURS!
At that point, I realized that I may have some luck getting it into download mode by powering it off, then powering it on with volume up and power and plugging in a USB cable. VOILA! It booted up normally (somehow) and I got it running the OS.
After that, I made sure that I did a factory reset by reverting to stock using the LG Software Upgrade tool.
The moral of this story is, if you are going to try to install a custom recovery on 4.4.2, make sure you know what you're doing. It turns out an app called AutoRec did the trick for me.

I didn't get the blue screen but I kept getting the security error screen on my d802. To turn it off, I kept holding down the power button for about 10 seconds after the screen went blank. This caused the phone to remain powered off. After that, I was able to boot into download mode. Maybe this method will work for your phone.

Don't know of any other methods because holding down the power button got the phone to turn off and allow me to get into download mode. From download mode, I was able to restore a stock 5.01 ROM to my phone via LG Mobile Support Tools.
LG G2 Bluescreen then no boot after disconnecting battery
Found my LG G2 with a completely blue screen. It would not turn off. Took it apart and disconnected the battery. Reconnected the battery and there was only a blank black screen and the phone would not boot. Zilch. Even with pressing the power button with the volume down to boot into recovery.....still zilch.
I sucessfully got my phone to work again using a hair dryer trick on an LG G3, which I found here.
1. I took the back off the phone, disconnected the battery, and removed the SIM card.
2. I then used a hairdryer on high heat and blew the heat over the uncovered areas for 10 minutes.
3. I let the phone from hot to warm, reconnected the battery and put it all back together with the SIM card replaced.
4. I booted into recovery and restored a TWRP backup, and my LG G2 is working like a champ again.
