Nexus S 4G??? - Nexus S General

Ok so I have a Samsung Epic 4G touch. This device is HORRIBLE. Ever sense we got bumped to ICS the battery life is beyond horrible. 3 hours max of battery life on ICS.
Sprint offered to send me a Nexus S 4G to replace this POS samsung made.
My question is other then hardware specs (The ET4G is superior) how do you guys like the phone? Have you guys officially got Jellybean yet? Just an overall point of view.

The Nexus S 4G didn't get Jellybean officially, but plenty of roms based on the Jellybean sources are available.

I would get the nexus then. Battery life on it sucks compared to the new phones out there but its better than that. And its free. Go for it as long as you don't get stuck renewing a contract its a no brainer then.
Also you have to except it doesn't have a physical keyboard of course.

Pretty much the best parts about the Nexus S is the screen contrast and if you get a kernel that plays well with voodoo sound enhancements. The dac in this bad boy sounds better than Iphones or ipod

I would use this time to learn how to unlock and flash things to your new nexus before it arrives. It is easier and different then other android devices. Don't be a turd and use one of those one click turd solutions .

With a good ROM, kernel combo you can get decent battery out of the 4g. I got this phone being ignorant of all this stuff. Then I found out what it can do and I will never go without a nexus again.

I have the Epic Touch and I tried a few ICS ROM which were based off the OTA update and they all sucked. If you know much about flashing you should try the AOSP ROM that's based off of JB. I here it's much better than the OTA ICS update. Also, are they allowing you to keep the Epic Touch or do you have to send it back?

I bought this phone off contract for 100$ to save my employee upgrade.
I had the S3 and until they launch LTE in my area there was no sense in owning an LTE device. Saved 100$ and have a phone that I can really play with lol.
I manage a full day of Average use but it is a brand new device with brand new battery. It will probably start declining eventually but for now I like it.
I did install JB AOSP on it and let me tell ya, this thing is so damn smooth now it is hard to believe its as old of a device that it is.

The devotion that Google has to the Nexus brand makes anything the Epic went thru irrelevant. I would definitely get the Nexus S 4G if it came to Sprint. I'm not concerned with dual core seeing as how my Epic runs blazing and handles games amazingly. It suits my needs just fine. But I might consider the Evo successor as well.

Should I return Evo for Nexus S 4g?

So I just bought the Evo Thursday unaware I can't root the phone. That was the main reason I bought it was to root it, but now it seems im screwed. I need help deciding should I get the Nexus s or keep the Evo, I did some research and the Nexus sounds great and I know it doesn't have a sd slot but it has 16gb built in. Im using a 8gb card and not planning on upgrading. So what should I do I hate a stock phone and most of my apps is for a rooted phone. What would you do?

you should wait until devs find an exploit for evo, its way better than the NS4G
You got 30 days to return it so you could wait, there are some rumors that a few devs are close to getting root on the Evo 4, or just go ahead and take it back. It's really up to you. I liked the Nexus but the fact it didn't have a removable sd card makes me not like it, maybe thats a dumb reason but thats why I didn't like it.

I have both, the NS4G is without a doubt better. There was a issue with the performance of the radio for some people, and that was a major gripe for some people that I think would stop be me from fully recommending but it's a getting updated to Android 2.3.5 with fixes to the radio on Monday.
It's waaaayyy too late to get the EVO 4G. The NS4G is half as old and the tech while slightly better/same (and in the case of the GPU, way more), will get STABLE updates through 2012 I bet. You'll feel a lot better having a NS4G late 2011 - early 2012 guaranteed.
Way better is a little bit of a stretch, but you will be better off with a ROOTED evo. But its anyone's guess when s-off will be achieved with the new h-boot so if you need to be rooted the Nexus is a good choice. I own both phones and I wouldn't keep an unrootable GB evo, no way. I got lucky and scored 2 new in the box s-off evos last weekend so my Nexus is on the nightstand till we get the ota to hopefully fix its only downfall, a horrible radio. Upside of nexus is no workarounds for GPS to work running aosp, it always works and no battery issues that I've experienced. I've tried every GPS driver and fix on my evo and android sytem just kills my battery. If I don't install maps and turn off location and GPS battery life on the evo is as good as the nexus.
Just wanted to chime in since I do own both phones. I'd get a nexus for now and if you don't like it, you will have no problems getting a mint s-off evo down the road.

Thanks for the video and reply I love what im hearing because I had a MT4g and all I used was CM7 because I cant stand sense so this is perfect for me. The only real plus I have for the EVO IMO is the screen size and camera but I dont take many pics maybe a couple a month if that so I think I will do the trade in.

FWIW, the Nexus S line is pretty old too, but still younger than the EVO.
My vote is for the Nexus S 4G. You already said you don't like Sense. So it makes 'sense' to just get the NS4G. Like others have said, you have 30 days so you could wait and keep the EVO and hope for root if you are sold on the phones hardware.

Great idea and if/when all is fix I can root because sprint will charge me 35 extra to restock
Here's my two cents.
On topic, Nexus s.
Off topic a bit, if at all possible go with the evo 3d.
It is the 4g with more ram and processor than the nexus s and the 4g. The 4G is a year old and past its prime. The NS is 6months old and not as good as the 3d.
Back on topic for a lower price the NS4G is the way to go.

I owned two Nexus 4g phones and sold them both (returning to my Evo 4G) for the following reasons:
-radio issues = miserable battery life! No joke, 5-6 hours with moderate use. I get twice that time with the Evo 4G. (The new OTA update is supposed to help with WIFI and 4G, NOT 3G, which is where part of the problem lies.
-feels cheap! flimsy, hard, slippery plastic does not feel good in the hand.
-the screen is not better than the Evo 3D. Nexus colors are over saturated, so skin tones are RED, etc. I guess some people like that, but I prefer more accurate colors. And the screen have a green tint.
I suggest you do to a Sprint store and try them out side-by-side. That is the only way to really compare them IMO.
If the ns4g doesn't have synergy then it just isn't cool.

EVO was easily replaceable as there are plenty of high end slate styled phones on Sprint. Epic on the other hand fills a niche. Honestly, I've noticed a lot of Epic users out in the wild lately. I used to never see anyone else with my phone and now it's been every place I go I seem to see another person with an Epic. Even at a year and a half old, it holds it own and even bests a lot of the newer mid-range phones out there.
To the novice consumer the Epic is the cheaper keyboarded style galaxy s2. The Og Epic never got much advertisement, but since the Epic Touch has a lot of people head in to check it out, see the Og Epic, are like "oh cool it's the same phone with a keyboard and cheaper" and bam, it becomes more popular then when it was released.

I am sort of in the same boat. In spite of SERO, opening a line in a family VZW account would cost about the same or less and I never go beyond 3GB of data use (that with double data promotion). Went to VZW store, played with the Nexus, but despite being well aware of specs, updates, ICS etc just did not feel that it was that much better than what I already have. Also, realized that I will really miss my KB, and the dev community is still in its infancy for Nexus @XDA.

A lot of my friends had gotten Epics and I was the sore thumb who went out and got an Evo Shift back last April. That phone went kaput on me and I decided to hop on the epic-wagon after using other ones first hand. I won't ever get a non keyboard phone, and the epic is the best of its class...Its the ONLY one of its class now. Sprint has no plans to release any other keyboard phones yet, which is highly disappointing. We might see one when LTE comes around, but...in the mean time, I'm happy that the Epic has such an awesome team of devs here (Things over in the evo shift forum really started to die!).
Long story short: Long live the epic.
I think the possibility of us getting ics is pretty good actually. It used to seem out of reach but now the hyped nexus update has been halted and Sammy is posting new rdf files, not to mention the increasing amount of epic buyers lately. If you ask me, I think the probability of us getting ics is higher than many think. Our phone will easily support it.

Yeah I might get one either that or the Galaxy Nexus. We know your a Sense Fanboy lol. A lot of other users on here are too even tho they'll never admit it. I'm more of a AOSP Fanboy just because of functionality. If you like Sense go with the Evo LTE like drob311 did. I'm sure it'll get plenty of Sense roms and hardly any AOSP roms.
Always have been. Has a lot to do with the TP2 days. I've run just about every kind of ROM since starting to mess with Android. But came to the conclusion that I just like Sense Best.

I'm more of a AOSP Fanboy just because of functionality. If you like Sense go with the Evo LTE like drob311 did. I'm sure it'll get plenty of Sense roms and hardly any AOSP roms.

Considering HTC makes pretty much all of their phones with Sense you don't see that as a issue? I've gone through 3 shifts now so what makes HTC phones that much better? They feel well built but crap out and break down easily. Doesn't live up to the quality I expected from HTC...

Go get a Samsung and experience the radios crashing, and you will realize HTC is the way to go... Even the almighty galaxy nexus had the loss of service bug, due to the radios crashing, and I forgot to mention the random airplane mode bug... Sprint and sammy have screwed up every phone that's been released by sprint, not just the moment, but EVERY Samsung device. It's very pathetic... I'll personally be sticking with HTC...

HTC doesn't make their phone perfect either, isn't that why your on the Evo LTE right now? All brands of phones have their flaws. Look at how nice the samsung screen resolutions are. All I'm saying is don't paint a perfect picture for HTC because it's not all peaches and roses.. Your looking at Samsung from a biased standpoint because of your experiences with the Samsung moment.

Say what you will, but HTC phones don't drop signal like sammys (requiring a battery pull)... You should get a Sammy, you would fit right in with that crowd... And also, I had many moments, a few intercepts and I have family members with epic touch, sg3, nexus s 4g and the g nexus... All of them have serious complaints, the main one being loss of signal and the airplane mode bug... Imagine this... You are on a road trip with your kids, you get in an accident, you go to call 911 because someone needs medical attention, you realize that your phone has no signal and the battery needs to be pulled. While you are pulling the battery, the person who needs medical attention could die in the 2 plus minutes it takes for an unrooted phone to boot... All phones have their flaws, keyboard phones even more so... Like I said, upgrade to a crapsung, you will love the pure crap for a product that you were sold... Sorry, but if you ask anyone that's owned a Sammy and an HTC, almost all of them will say that HTC makes much more reliable phones... And stop talking about me being a sense guy... I run ALL the Roms that are released, sense or aosp, doesn't matter to me...

Normally I would argue, but, it sounds like you are thinking about getting a Sammy, which means you won't be around the shift forums anymore... Samsung makes the best phones ever, I highly recommend them...

Sticking with Sprint.
Thinking of optimus g or evo lte.
Any input?
Btw, I don't want to wait for HTC one. Impatient I guess.

Just fyi my best friend upgraded to the evo lte, the same time I got my nexus. We live in a area that has abundant lte. He has never once(with the exception of being at the sprint store) been able to connect to it. He can stand right next to me, me having full bars lte, and he is still on 3g. I've checked the settings in his phone. It's set to CDMA/ LTE but he hasn't been able to connect to it. Sprint gave him some BS about him being too far from the towers lol. Not saying you will have the same issue, just putting it out there.

Swiperrat went EVO LTE and is hating that decision, if that tells you anything
Love my EVO LTE
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
Note 2 or s3. Evolte and optimus g are both a hassle to do anything with rootwise. Hell the Optimus g just got jb ota yesterday, its been on ics since launch. The evolte has had a ton of ppl bail to the s3 and note 2 due to its abundant dropped calls and poorly handled lte handoff which leaves you with next to no lte even if you're hanging off the tower. Lg=bad track record of updates and support, no change on new devices, plus its locked up. HTC= waning support and getting more and more locked up. Plus do you really want to give your hard earned money to a company who threatens developers with lawsuits for hosting sense roms on their site? Hell if you really want htc or lg, do it right and buy an iphone. Both companies have turned into mini apple control freak Nazi's with their firmwares
I like to break stuff!
Hold out for galaxy S IV release ! - What's a couple of months when you've waited almost 2 yrs )
Thanks ALL,
My brother has the EVOlte and has complained about the lte connections. He works across the street from me and there is a guy here at work with me that has an iPhone 5 with Sprint, gets LTE all the time but my brother has no such luck.
Ugh...

NO!!!!! I can't wait any longer. If I did wait, I might go for something like the HTC One but...dude, I really don't care too much. I know that having the latest and greatest is helpful in the long-run but consider how our current platform has held up.
I think the SIII is going to get some more attention from me.
Hmmm

Have you tried the newest MIUI I just posted for the Evo? It's pretty sweet
Plus there will be a new jelly bean miui late tomorrow or the next to check out. It is a little laggy but not as bad as some of the other jb roms I have tried plus so far I have not had any of the camera issues like I have had with other jb roms. The camcorder sucks but I am still looking into a possible fix for that also. This has to be the best jb Miui to ever grace our elderly evo's.
There's an app called VideoCam Illusion that has worked well in the past on ICS/JB ROMs
Actually no...but this phone is adios in about an hour from now...

Not anymore they use mhl now which adds the dual ports to an extension it cuts down on costs and parts to break in the phone. Plus MHL uses standard hdmi cables instead of a special micro hdmi > hdmi.
I like to break stuff!
Yes many cables to do the job of one. Mhl to phone, usb from msl to power, hdmi from mhl to tv.
