HDMI adapter Genuine vs. other - Galaxy S III General

Hi all,
1st week into my S3 and well chuffed with it.
Seen the option to be able to play movies to an HDMI telly using an adapter.
There is a geniune branded one on fleabay for £20+ GBP and then a non-branded on for a fraction of that price ( ~£7.50GBP )
Just wondered whether anybody has experience either way to suggest whether the cheap option is worth it or not.
Thx

If the cheap one says its also compatible with any other phone than the S3 then it will be a 5 pin MHL connector one, and won't actually work with your S3, even though the seller says it does... The S3 uses an 11pin MHL connector. The cheap ones work fine if you add a 5 to 11 pin MHL adapter add-on ..you can find the adapter add-on for about $10 on ebay

aaah okay so I either find an 11 pin MHL or just go for genuine SS. I'll browse fleabay to see whats out there.
EDIT : This was saved in my fleabay faves, it definately says 11pin but metions S2 & S3. Would YOU trust?

Amazingly I can't even find any of those adapter tips on UK eBay, and if I set to search other countries they trying to charge on average £20 delivery so the cheapest I can find one for is £27.
So can someone point me in the right direction to get one at a reasonable price.

Guys! am I missing something here??? I'm correct to assume my S3 is 11-pin right??
Lets go back to my ebay link : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130752544096?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
This item is £7.59GBP inclusive of shipping and clearly states S3 & 11 pin in the body of the text.
So is this item good to go ?

Would the Galaxy Note one work?

Am I right in thinking that the 11 pin SGS3 MHL cable is compatible with the S2 and the Note (i.e. backwards compatible)?
Don't confuse this with the S2 and Note MHL connector working with the S3 - I know it doesn't.
Can someone actually check with an S3 MHL connector and an S2 or a Note and confirm please?

TV-out on the Galaxy S

So, what kind of cable should I get and where can one get it ?
A bit more googling turned up this link, which seems to be the right cable: http://www.blahdvd.com/Hw/Samsung-Original-Samsung-Micro-USB-TV-Out-Cable/AATCX10CBEC/product.htm
Still in the UK though, I wonder if they're available somewhere closer to home :/
the Nokia N95 TV Out cable works perfect.
I believe we have a winner (price-wise): http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.31498

I don't think its possible to do HDMI out I'm afraid.
Can confirm Nokia cables work perfectly, I have an old one that I'm using.
They can be purchased cheaply on Ebay.

You don't think buy your not sure, hmmm lets hope you can do it, the 3 colors seem to me so old now.
I gotta have to go to shops look for a hdmi cable and try b4 you buy.
Can anyone else confirm this, if it works or not for sure?
The phone will only output analogue audio/video as far as I am aware. While you might be able to find a headphone to HDMI lead, the picture won't be any better.
Ordered a lead this morning from eBay, £1.94 delivered from the UK rather than H.K.

Beware of aftermarket USB cables

I picked up a couple aftermarket usb cables of Ebay for my tab so I could connect it at the office and use them in the charger for travel. I realized today I cant connect to my PC when I use the aftermarket cables. Just a heads up
You have to get the cable that matches your tab model. The pin outs are not the same between models.
Where??? I always got my accessories for my phones on Ebay without issue.
I believe what the OP is saying is make sure get charge and sync cable. I'm guessing the one he bought was only capable of charging. Fewer pins to connect = cheaper costs.
The pins are different for different models. When I bought a second cable off ebay, I couldn't get the cheapest, because it wouldn't work for my model. I had to buy the at&t model.
I bought a couple of these usb sync/charge cable recently from the eBay and gad no problems with them. They came with proper boxes wraped up.
If yoy need the link, let me know and i will send it to you.
Thanks.

Or you could just order an OEM one:

Galax Tab Sprint Cable
I have the oem cable and this aftermarket cable from ebay.
I've been using the cable from ebay since I got it.
The cable works fine and is longer.
Again I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tab

Just (arrived yesterday) got an after marked cable from ebay, just tried to use it and my Tab appears to shut down (black screen, no response from buttons etc).
Luckily I have my original cable with me but now that's doing the same (into a PC and mains).
Is this a massive coincidence of have I just goosed my beloved Galaxy Tab?
I bought a number of cheap retractable cables from ebay and they all work well for sync and charge.

so theres any diference between the samsung cable and a generic one or its just a problem picking up the one needed for the model u have?

I really hate that the OEM cables are so dang short. I'd love to find a couple of longer ones.
Sent from Galaxy Tab with XDA app
I use my OEM cable tho it is short, I use my USB cable extension from my logitech wireless mouse, It works just fine.
Of course when syncing I plug it direct to PC
I bought two different from DealExtreme a couple of months ago.
Both are working fine on my Dutch operator-free stock rom Tab.
The cables are a bit thinner then the original but for me works fine both charging and pc connection.
Shipping is free but some packages get lost "somewhere".
So it is just a risk you might want to take.
Only $ 2.90 to lose so for me better then eBay
Example: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/designer-s-data-cable-for-samsung-p1000-1m-length-51931
Bought there very cheap other accesoires as well:
http://s.dealextreme.com/search/p1000
When your at it I think you prefer to order a 2Amp car charger for example as well.
AliExpress also has lot's of items:
http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=charging+p1000&catId=0
Be sure to use a "gold supplier" if you want to have more guarantee that it actually be delivered.
Thans from another dutch guy who borght his stuff at mobilesupplies.nl for reasonable proces. Two charges a Docking station and a bluetooth keyboard in leather case.

Confirmation of UK specs

Quad-band 3G confirmed by Clove (this is from their blog post today)!
Samsung Galaxy S II UK Specs Confirmed: Exynos Chip & Quad-Band 3G!
Thursday, April 14, 2011
This has been a hot topic of conversation over the last month or so but finally we have confirmation of the Samsung Galaxy S II specs that remained to be clarified.
Having spoken to the UK Product Manager for the Samsung Galaxy S II, we can confirm that UK stock will ship with the following:
1. Samsung Dual Core Exynos CPU (not NVidia Tegra 2)
2. 3G frequencies are 850/900/1900/2100 (Quad band)
3. Display is Super AMOLED Plus
4. Box contents: Handset, battery, charger, USB cable, headset, Quick start guide.
If you have an outstanding pre-order with Clove for the SGS2, you will be receiving an email regarding this confirmation of spec within the next day or so and you will be given the chance to cancel the order if this is not the specification that you were hoping for. However, we hope that for the majority of you this will be good news and we look forward to shipping your order as soon as possible.

In Norway both the Arc and the Optimus 2x comes with HDMI cable. The Arc even comes with a 16gb SD card.
That said, I don't care much whether or not these things comes with the Galaxy S II. If you can buy such an expensive phone, you should be able to afford some minor accessories.

It to be expected that they wont give a HDMI adapter or a MHL Cable. Samsung's alternate solution is to use their certified accessories such as the ones mentioned above.
Even if we can afford it, the problem is that no one have this cables in stock, and some others want a reasonable price, not 28pounds for a cable that the real value is 1$ and we will see months later on dealextreme, but not at the launch date.
Great to hear. Now all we need is confirmation that the bootloader can be unlocked.
No, I think this cable / adapter will be available in the UK region soon after the release of the device. Its the regions like Singapore, South Korea and India that will have to wait as no one will be wanting to spend 30-50$ on a cable to hook up to a TV...
Yes, its a great feature to have but the demand of it will be less, especially in India, hence the retailers will not care to order it right away.
Thank you OP. That certainly did make my day I already have preordered with them and this was exactly the specs I was hoping for. Now we only need to wait and see whether the bootloader is actually open.
side topic: whatever happened to the "thanks" button here on xda ?

How long before LG gets it together and release a slimport adapter?

It doesn't seem to exist anywhere else but amazon and not even amazon has it in stock anymore, where are we supposed to get this adapter from? I'd love to have one, but no body has it available. Can't figure out where it'll be come from next, anyone got any clues I've missed?

Just ordered one on Amazon. Why would you want LG to manufacture this? It is a licence free and royalty free tech. Hopefully down the road we will see them for < 10 dollars.

Whatever you do, Don't buy the super cheap ones off Amazon. Buy the more expensive Samsung one. I've bought several cheaper ones of Amazon and they always break or have super bad quality. They have "Samsung" branded ones on Amazon for 20$ but then you run the risk of getting counterfeit. I ordered this one straight from Samsung http://m.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-H10FAUWESTA over 8 months ago, and have used it across 3 devices (S3, S4, and Note 3) and haven't had any problems. Good luck!

No problem, glad I could be helpful. Another thing I would recommend is the Samsung smart dock. Found herehttp://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009QW3TBK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1382314772&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70 it has a whole bunch of features. It is a USB hub, MHL adaptor, dock and headphone jack all in one. It's a bit spendy but an amazing little gadget. You can put your phone on it and just plug an HDMI cable straight into it and it works. It's pretty freaking cool.
