My "why does this work this way" rant thread. - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

I really like the stock browser. It is fast and looks great. However, why the he'll does it take a full 3 seconds for the Bookmarks list to load each time I click the Bookmarks icon? It is just a list. Nothing is being calculated.
Why? I just hate it when I love everything about an app except that ONE nagging little thing that is so f'd up you wonder how other ever got through.
Ok that's my app rant. What's yours?
Sent from my awesome Note 10.1

Ok here's another. In the s-notes app there is no option for UNDERLINE or STRIKE THROUGH when working with pda files. I mean, c'mon how does something so basic and obvious get left out?
Sent from my awesome Note 10.1

As long as I'm on a roll. In s-notes we get an option for one lined notepad background and it is some weird kind of parchment color. No options to import our own backgrounds. I mean what if I want to take notes on a picture of my girlfriends face? Lol, so limiting.
And how about letting us design our own templates?
They could have done so much with s-notes but they chose to do so little. Sometimes I think they are designing toys for children and not serious tools for adults.

Is there any link to report bugs to Samsung? or request for some basic features?

One thing I wish it had was a feature that was on the HTC flyer. I liked being able to annotate and draw on any screenshot right at that moment instantly.

Actually you can. Just hold the button on your s-pen down and press it to a web page (for instance). As soon as it snaps a picture of the screen release the button and lift the pen - boom, annotate, crop, whatever all you like

The delay probably has to do with the fact that it's syncing your favorites. Since I use Chrome on my desktop the browser on GN 10.1 is syncing the as evidence by both a local favorites and the synced one.

Battery life is great on this tablet. But why in da "?;; does it take so long to charge to full capacity? I wish it was like prime, in 2-2.5hrs. It'll be fully charged from zero.

Ok, I'm in!
I wish the stock browser and Chrome could be set to ALWAYS get the desktop version of a website... It seems to randomly jump to mobile versions, which looks stupid on a tablet.

this is probably the biggest issue i have. i can charge the tf700 and dock faster than i can charge just my galaxy tab 10.1. and it seems from posts here that the gn101 isn't any faster. granted this should help with battery health/longevity, but dagnabbit sometimes i need a quick charge.
this is where having multiple tablets comes in handy.
man, started charging at 1:30 at 64%. it's 4:00 now and i'm finally fully charged. it charges fast up to 80, but that last trickle charge is a killer.

You can also just hold the screenshot button. One touch and it just snaps and saves but if you hold it, it snaps and opens the editor for some really cool s-pen scribbling.
Such a pity though that it seems its the only way to bring up that editor.

Why
Typing on a context box like posting here I have to tab down 3 lines to see what im typing or the text goes IP under the URL bar.I also have started seeing lag issues aftwr using browser for over a hour non stop.
are we all rethinking our purchase of this expensive toy looking tablet maybe? ??

I really hate that I have to multitouch the keyboard to make it split or float it keeps typing while I do that

1. After using bookmarks on the stock Samsung browser for a while, it automatically sorts bookmarks (seems to be by most used), and then my synced, Chrome desktop browser bookmarks get re-sorted. Very annoying! It should only sort when I ask it to.
2. Browser will not remember "Desktop View" setting after closing the current tab. Mobile view is useless.
There's my 2 complaints.

Not being able to sync S Planner tasks with google tasks is just stupid... It annoys me to no end.

After checking, rechecking, and then tripple checking my stock browser settings, i get annoyed when somtimes, every link i press opens in a new tab, when ive set it up to open in current tab..........im pretty sure its a bug, as it seems to only happen after long use of the stock browser

Check if you have "google instant" activated in the labs. That started happening to me after I checked that option and when I unchecked it stopped

Why can't the screen support a higher resolution! If hardware counts.. I hate looking at the nav buttons.. Ew..
Also, you can use s-note with a picture of your gf face or any other photo.
Why can't we customize that window that appears when we take out the S-Pen with our own apps!?
Why no NFC?
Why S-Note laggy with highlighter?

Google Market - Tablet Apps

I opened up market today, hit the tablet section, and I was so excited as a ton of apps showed up. but, then i realized that the same 20 apps just kept repeating.
Any one else see that?
Ha yes....same with me. I had checked earlier so when I checked this afternoon and saw tons I was very excited. That is, until I looked closer
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I see the same thing but at least there's 4 more apps on the list!
What a sick, sick joke, Google.
It just keeps scrolling ad infinitum!
It'll pick up soon enough. A lot of apps already on the market, even though they should work fine on honeycomb, will have things like "android.hardware.telephony" features enabled, which will by default hide it in the market from honeycomb tablets (which lack telephony). It's a shame that the devices were released so soon after the Honeycomb API was released, but give the devs a week or so to test and tweak and a lot more should pop up once the they've amended their manifests. I quite like how Android is the complete opposite to Apple when it comes to launches, but I can see how it could be annoying .
There's definitely a few new apps in that list, trust me
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
it just got updated with a list of feature. limited atm, but it's growing
It was a glitch and quickly patched. However, I had that glitch a few days go, not today.
Google is tweaking the Market app almost everyday it appears.
Spare parts question
I have a Tab and I use an app called Spare Parts that resizes (scales) phone apps to work on the Tab. Have you tried it on the Xoom?
For me the list was at least 40% longer. I installed like 7 or 8 new things. I am tempted to try the updated Thumbit Keyboard, but I am unsure. I am cheap and even 2$ would be terrible to waste.
that keyboard is awesome. You shouldn't regret it.
Tell me if anyone else notices this. Whenever you are searching apps in the market and click on an app, and then you go back it puts you all the way back up to the very top of the app list forcing you to start all the way from the beginning all over again! When you hit back it should bring you back to where you left off instead of starting all over at the top of the list. And it does it every single time too! Its annoying! Especially when you are just looking around at apps to download, you might get very far down on the list and then... BAM! You will have to start over when you click an app to view more info about it. Who feels the pain on that? This needs a fix ASAP!

I went and bought it. It's really just like $1.67 but I figured it would hold me over till SwiftKey released their tablet version (it's in BETA currently).
...this is actually really nice. Glad I found it, very easy vs. the default keyboard. It has a settings option for what screen size you have, just pick 10in and it adjusts accordingly...very happy with my purchase.

I bought it too. It gets the job done. I find that it seems to repeat my letters alot so I have to type at a steady pace. We'll see how it works out. I feel like it's designed for smaller fingers/hands than mine.
I am a swiftkey guy so I can't wait until they release it
I bought Thumbit too. I like having multiple keyboards to choose from. Sometimes, I'm at table and the stock keyboard works well. Sometimes, I'm holding it in one hand with a stylus in the other and the slideIt keyboard works well. i use thumbit if i'm sitting on the couch holding it in two hands. All worth it.
I am waiting for swype though.
My biggest problem with non-stock keyboards is that the windows doesn't show the rest of the page, but rather an input window of sorts. That is, if i'm entering information on a webpage, using the stock keyboard, I can still see the rest of the page and navigate around it, but using anything else, I can't./

I see 32 apps none repeated.
Woke up to 11 new apps in the Tablet section of the market this morning.
Oddly enough, I feel like a couple of them don't belong there yet.
Evernote, which actually isn't tablet optimized (small icons, no multiple fragments for easier navigation, etc), but works.
and Bonsai Blast, which also works but looks like crap because it's just stretched and not in HD for the tablet.

Very annoyed at this point with the browsers on this device!

So obviously I go to XDA everyday to look up information and post things. Well this has been huge chore for me with this device.
First off I have found that the dolphin browser slightly edges out the android browser for being the fastest. Even the dolphin browser can't handle quick replies and posting from the XDA 2010 browser very well. When I switch to the classic theme I am able to get more done. If I try to blaze away in the the 2010 theme I will get double button pushes and a ton of mis spellings.
This brings me to my next gripe. Say I write a block of text in a quick reply window and there are mis spellings (which there will be with a software keyboard) trying to fix these mistakes makes me want to throw my tablet at the guy sitting behind me a work. The little green arrow never lines up with the cursor, and when I go to move the cursor it is just all over the place and 2 seconds behind my finger presses on the screen.
I would remedy all of this by using the XDA App but it crashes constantly.
Also trying to do things such as login to Facebook and browse around make the device want to roll over and die. JESUS MY CELL PHONE HANDLES FULL HTML WEBSITES. I can honestly say that if the text editing were better I could live with not being able to run the 2010 theme. But why the hell does Facebook chug so hard? And why cant this damn thing load the 2010 theme???? Its a text website with minimal pictures!!!
so LOL
In editing that last post I realized that even though the arrow doesn't line up with the cursor it still functions correctly, you just have to deal with its random behaviour I guess. Also if you zoom considerably it helps a lot with text editing. Who woulda thought?
This still doesn't explain the poor performance on a lot of websites.

The XDA app is working fine for me, and judging by other people's signatures, it's the same for them too.
On the other hand, the general browser stability is pretty poor over all. Dolphin and the stock browser will just quit on me without warning. I was loving Moreno browser on my phone (Droid X), but, while it renders perfectly well, it FCs too much.

I use opera, no real issues except with load time which feels slower.
As for keyboard I'm using the hacker's keyboard. I love it more than ASUS or default.
You can draw the green arrow around after it appears if you're having issues getting it to position correctly.
I had a problems with XDA where I could not navigate to the previous page.
Most site work fine but on XDA and Yahoo when I hit the back button, it only refresh the current page and stay there. This is both the default and Dolphin HD browser.
The only one that let me navigate to previous page is Opera, I use it when I don't need flash.
On a positive note I just update to Prime v1.4 ROM today and it seems to be much better. It's letting me navigate back.

Im using the prime rom as well and haven't experienced any force closes or problems navigating back. Only the editing problems and overall slowness.
It feels like I'm using Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 6.
That said, most problems can be solved by rebooting.
Its a shame this is such a miss, given it's the primary reason for the device to exist for many people.
I can say it got significantly better with the 3.1 update and a modded rom, but its still not where it should be.

I did too, back when everyone was 3.0.1. The zoom and a500 played smooth in YouTube app while my TF struggled, although my video quality was much better.
I wondered if zoom and a500 had different HQ settings, wondered if all were actually using 720p, if HQ mode was really 720p for all the devices, or some were 480p scaled to 720p. That would explain to me any performance differences. With 3.1, this now called HD.
My YouTube app at 720p full screen on TF 3.1 is very good, no need to O/C to improve this app. Browser is another story, but I'm not convinced it uses H/W acceleration (yet).

Interesting thoughts. The responsiveness increase I noticed was in stock browser and home screen usage.
Just an update.
I am currently using Opera forced in desktop mode only. This is the fastest scolling and zooming browser there is. The only thing I hate is how opera functions when selecting text off of a page to copy. It is really cheap. I also like the fact that I can add any search engine to the browser. I couldnt stand how every time I did a Google search it would search through Google mobile, so I just added the main Google search and all was fixed.
Typing on forums has been a breeze for the most part with opera, now if I can just find a way to use the Native copy and paste on web pages it will be almost perfect. At least when editing text or web page URLs it uses the native highlight feature.
I gave up. I really hope by tf2 both device and os have ironed out kinks.

Slow Text Entry?

Is is just me, or is the text entry kind of pathetic on the browser of the tab
any desktop site, like.. Facebook , or XDA, typing lags always a second, so the words and letters typed will show up after you actually type, its not smooth at all...
*laughs hard*
I think there might have been a few discussions about this. Yeah, it's an issue. Dolphin or Opera Mini will work better.
So I think I may have a fix for this. I was digging around in the keyboard settings, and noticed that the Tab ships with "Samsung Keyboard" as the default. I switched mine back to the stock Android keyboard, and it's much better. Of course there are a bunch of replacement keyboards you can use as well, but the stock honeycomb keyboard seems much more responsive than the Samsung one.
So far the Android keyboard, Swiftkey, and Swype keyboards haven't made anything better for me.
I've seen some people say disabling OpenGL in the debug settings helps, but they also say it has some other performance side effects. So... I guess I'll be using Opera Mini for a while.
The Bookmarks widget though makes it real easy to use the stock browser bookmarks (synced from my desktop Chrome browser) real easy with Opera though, so I like that.
ya so far swype is tne worst. But problem ive been having is if i type too fast the keyboard suddenly closes and im constantly having to reopen it.... Its fuggin annoying.
I've been using thumb keyboard and no lag. Its able to keep up with me
i really don't think its keyboard related
I'm using stock hc keyboard
Divineblue try doing a quick reply here on ur tab and you'll see the lag
Its fine in Google search and mobile sites but just des on desktop sites like facebook etc
lag disappears in opera mini but its a slow loading browser and I can tell decreases page quality, also can't get facebook desktop to load, no user agent option
so the hc browser really sucks then and ia behind this text lag
Is this lag a general problem with HC? Do you guys think that it will be fixed?
I got this tab on friday I love it so far but this text entry lag is driving me insane.

I use the thumb keyboard and stock browser. It lags like crazy, no different than using any other keyboard.
Has this been reported to Google?
Because of this issue alone, I postponed my purchase of any Android tablet
Web browsing accounts the most for my usage pattern. And I really hate any slow down for doing it.
See if this is fixed in the upcoming Android 3.2 (if it made to GTab) ... or hopefully ICS.
Is it at all lack of power from the Tegra or is it a glitch./-/
I bet on problem with Android Honeycomb.
It is really strange if Tegra does not have enough power on this!
We have a lot of Tegra phones and they don't have this issue. Sure, this is different OS, but that should show about "power".
Probably we need to wait for Android tablet Honeycomb that does not using Tegra.
And see if the problem still there.

Problem with facebook

Don't know if its just me but is anyone else finding Facebook unusable. I updated it the other day for her and now she keeps complaining to me that its takes about half an hour just to scroll threw it as all the pictures are to big and keep taking up the whole screen
It's Facebook's new timeline update. It's how it is. Lol.
Think she will have to get used to it about time her fingers did some work anyway
Yeah, they didnt really take into consideration how the pictures would look on larger landscape devices. I'm sure it looks ok on phones, but tablets....yeah that's a different story.
Had a quick look on it today every picture takes ages to scroll threw. The only good thing is at least she will leave my tab alone now

Friendcaster is by far the best Facebook app, and FAR better than the official one.
Better interface, faster, easier to navigate, integrated Facebook Chat.
Only problem at the moment seems to be inbox messaging, though I believe that is being sorted.
I tried out Friendcaster and the UI is nice, and seems faster but the photos don't work. They are all pixelated. Also, I had it open and was switching between that and FB for android. Friendcaster was missing a bunch of posts that FB was showing. Not sure what the issues are. Why can't something just work the way it should?

Do you really think that was at all helpful? The iPad is not the end all and be all. I vastly prefer my Galaxy Tab because I wanted a full featured tablet computer, not a giant iPod Touch.
Getting back on topic, I agree that Facebook really screwed up their latest update. The pictures aren't handled right at all. It seems they've forced the app to behave like it's on a phone and are snubbing tablets all together.
However, if you don't mind viewing Facebook in portrait mode, it's fine. The photos are only screwed up when viewing in landscape mode. I hope they get their act together and fix it soon.
My friends have iPads and they complain about the same issues. The application does the same on both devices. Its just reformating the mobile page contents...

Because whoever is responsible for developing their mobile apps is utterly incompetent. They have always sucked and Facebook really doesn't seem to care, probably because they want people to access the site via web browser so they can shove all their ads in their faces.
well, if you have a tablet, FB is perfectly usable in the browser. As far as the ads, would you rather pay to use FB instead?

Neat Multi View Feature

If you go in to recent apps, you can grab a multi view capable app by its header and drag it on to the screen. It turns the app in to a pop up window. So if you're using the browser in full or split view doing this turns it in to a pop up preserving all your info.
You can also do that by dragging down your current active window from the left or right top corner, drag it down to the center of the screen. Need so practice before u get it done, but when u do it correctly u will feel so easy haptic feedback.
If u got root and have an app like MW Commander which u use to make every app multi window, it will also enable this pop up view for all apps.

Barry!!!! Long time my friend [emoji1]. That's quite a nice feature actually, you don't have to leave what you're doing.

Hey there. Are you getting a Note 5? It's really an amazing phone and you and I both go through enough phones to know the difference. Samsung's pulled a bunch of features and settings out and I miss some. But the benefit of thinner and lighter s/w paired with uber fast memory and storage is a smoothness and tightness you'd expect from an iPhone. It's pretty too.

I get that to work less than half the time. Great in theory, not so great in practice.

I'm actually leaning towards getting an IPhone 6S....I know I know. But we will see, I may change my mind. I know the Note 5 Is a solid phone.

this feature was available on the note 4
You would access it by opening the side panel (thats now gone from the note 5) and then simply tapping the app you want. It would bring it up as a floating app.

And it is really useful too. I use it a lot e.g. when I need to quickly refer to a note I made while browsing and I do not wish to even minimize the browser , there are a lot of such instances.
I know
You can still do it now but it takes extra steps.
Looks like Samsung is going backwards. Or did I buy the S6 by mistake?
