Universal Search Function on Galaxy Note 10.1 - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Has samsung restored the universal search function (ability to search anything in the phone like apps, etc) on their tablets especially Note 10.1 ? I have the galaxy tab 2 10.1 and this function is still not there yet....

Can any one who own the note try to confirm this ? Are able to search for apps ( ie camera, gallery ) or just the web ?

If you are talking about the google search on top left corner, the answer is no, it does not search in the installed apps, only web.

Thats weird... most android device other than samsung will allow search for apps in the device

Universal search is there (at least on the N8000). Only a couple of things come preset. You can change it in the setting in the upper right corner.

Can confirm it searches locally. I have the GT-N8000.

Could you please clarify? I went and check the help. It says that I should tap Google on my homescreen, then Settings in top left corner, and I should see "Searchable items" but it's not there. Any ideas?

I have the N8013.

Which model exactly?
There are 3 GT-N80xx units - N8013 may have some crippling thanks to Apple choosing to litigate rather than innovate.

The setting to select what to search is on the top right (see screenshot) when you open up the search function (which is on the top left on the home screens).

I'd guess they forgot to update the help pages on the 8013 so it still describes the option. Like others have said the U.S. version(s) have it disabled due to litigation.

Does that mean that we could flash a stock ROM from a different country and have the option working on the N8013?

Because the model number is different (8013 vs. 8010) I'm not sure. Entropy can probably advise you. I'm sure there will be third party ROMs that address it pretty soon.

Oh I see, I tought that the 8013 model was like the 32gb WiFi only version everywhere, but I understand now that it means it's the US WiFi version... meh I guess I will just wait a bit and try a custom ROM down the road, I don't really need to search apps, I barely use the fonction on my SGS2 anyway.
I don't see many advantages in rooting/flashing as of right now.

What about the Search apk? Maybe someone with an international version could extract it and we'll see if it works on the US version.

I had it on my GS3... and with the update, it was removed.
I put it back in with a ROM with these instructions: HERE
Anyone willing to try this on the Note?

I have the 8013 and also do not have local search (very frustrating)

I have it.

Samsung Galaxy S trick:Change brightness with a simple swype!!!

Yes it works!
You can change the brightness from the home screen without change any option or install any application.
Press on the notification bar (not open it) and after shows up with the date, just swype left or right to adjust the brightness!!!
Here is my video on youtube to see how it works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFABj8LvD3g
Welcome to 2010 lol. (sorry!).
I think the correct way to do it is just to hold an area on the notification bar (not swype). left is less bright, right is more bright. (at least on latest fws it works like this).
This has been known since éclair. You must have auto brightness off for it to work though.
Thanks for sharing anyway, original thread has probably been lost in the folds. I'm sure there are plenty of new sgs users on here all the time. It is still one of the best smartphones on the market today, and now it's dirt cheap.

I think that it takes a few days for it to gather data. Then, when it has enough, and sees a pattern it will start to present you with the cards.
I haven't had it long enough to take, so I don't show cards yet either. But from what I've read that's the deal.

for talkback you need to click the little settings icon in bottom right corner of google now...a whole bunch of settings come up, go to places and set as you like. also check use google.com instead of native to get images with the results cards,.
the google now will recognize after a few days that you leave to go to a certain place each day, then ask if you wanna set it as your place of work, it then starts to give you updates as to when you should leave to arrive on time and such.

That is because of the drawable settings , I noticed this also and I'm trying to fix it , I'm close to solution.
EDIT:
Here you go , this one deletes voicesearch.apk also and installs the Google_Now.apk (Velvet) modded so it only shows a Search icon and mic icon in left corner and not the 2 google icons.

Editing the multitasking apps

I was trying to add the maps app to my mult-itasking bar and couldn't seem to find a way to do it. On watching a couple of YouTube videos I see there appears to be an edit button at the bottom of the bar on those notes which doesn't appear on mine.
Am I being really dense on not being able to see how to access this button?

the edit button only appears when you have too many apps for that bar.
Samsung have made a list of what apps can be used in this mode, maps is not one of them.
A hack is being worked on to allow all apps to be used in this mode, please see the sticky thread.
It was because I saw maps on the list of apps in that thread that I was trying to add it. Never mind, just a minor thing. I'm just curious that, if the edit button only appears when there are too many apps on the multi-tasking bar, how do you actually add or remove apps when it isn't there? Or do apps that can be use this facility (on unrooted phones) automatically add themselves there?
Thanks for your help.

ah actually good point, maps is one of the apps.
Are you sure you have maps installed?
Yep, have maps installed.
Maps should then default to being one of the items in the side-bar
Yes the maps is there, and also it looks like there are omly 12 applications supported as of yet,you can remove or move them back when you hit the Edit button and drag any of them to the right lane or back to the left.
Must be a glitch on my phone then. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the maps app to see if it would make a difference but no luck. Any ideas gratefully received.

back on-topic...
maps definitely is not there, weird.
I take it you have not modified the firmware at all? on a completely stock rom?
Maps is installed as a /system/ app you see, and it is that specific package name that is allowed for multi-tasking, if for some reason you don't have it installed as a /system/ app there is a slim chance its under a slightly different package name and multi-view just won't see it.
Edit:
can you post me a screenshot of the page displayed when you go *#1234# in the dialer.
Here you go.
Maps is here, and *#1234# results

It would be very easy, if you wanted, to unbrand that device and put the latest UK unbranded firmware on it but at the risk of voiding your warranty (although tbh it shouldn't).
If you are interested in this just PM me and I will give you the simple instructions.

[Q] System App / S-Pen for cutting things out ?

Hey, I debloated @_alexndr ROM by myself and now after a few days I realize one thing:
I can't use this handy little feature to press on the S-Pen and cut out what's interesting for me, so I can
share it.
Basically what is working:
The cutting out animation is working BUT the window with all the options to customize and share is missing.
I think there's a system App I deleted which is supposed to deal with this.

That's exactly what I was talking about !
Is there any way to make a txt file by the device itself, so you don't have to type out all the apk's ?
Or can you just make a few screenshots of your system/app & system/pirv-app folder ?
As an alternative you could make a screenrecord and put it on youtube (or whatever).

Completely forgot i can just list them in terminal. I probably havent uploaded them in the right order. But here you go, also i have renamed some of them. Well, here I am again.
Unfortunaly I can't figure out what app or apps are missing on my device.
With the pictures given me by @celderic I compared my apps with his.
There were a few apps which I was missing which I put back to system/app or system/priv-app.
Sadly no changes !
So I checked all apps which I would combine with this feature and opened up the apk's to search for evidence.
As far as I can tell, PhotoRetouching_FHD_H.apk is responsible for what I'm looking for.
Funny thing is, I had this all the time on my phone so why does it not work ?
I can't tell and I can't think of anything I can do more, so basically this is a dead end unless someone wants to help out.

New firmware, AND4

So i was dinking around on sammobile, saw the latest firmware for the p900, problem is, its only a china firmware, i said.. "What the hell..." and went ahead and installed it on my US p900.
Works like a champ! Its all in english, im not sure if thats because i didnt wipe before i odin'd it. But reguardless, im up and running with it.
I had to change the text prediction to english. Everything i was typing was english, but the prediction suggestions were all chinese. But i just changed that in the keyboard settings.
In the stock browser, if you search from address bar, it returns results from some chinese search engine. It looks like you cant change it. Oh well, i use chrome and opera anyway.
The keyboard has some new features that i really like. Options for clipboard, handwriting, mic.. Etc are right on top, can turn prediction on and off with a toggle above tab..

So the alternate symbols are gone on the new keyboard? I'm not sure if i'd like that. I guess the common ones are there but some basic math symbols and brackets are missing in addition to other punctionation marks. Guess thats what the Sym button will have to be used for (currently don't use it much with the older keyboard).

Thanks, yes fully aware of that but the discussion was on the new keyboard layout being described above so I was asking relative to that discussion. Had he still been using that firmware and the option not be in there to turn it on I was going to suggest next to try xposed and that alt keyboard symbol module.

I know from messing with missing keyboard symbols, both the "language" and handwriting recognition "language" need to be "English US". If one is UK, symbols would disappear. This was reported by many when I posted looking for my symbols. Just fyi. Wonder if that rom had the mag UX that US users didn't get.
