Start up the phone and allow it to setup.
Shut down/turn off the phone.

CLOSE the FlashTool (it'll conflict w/ the rooting toolkit in step #6).
NOTE: The build # WON'T change after flashing the insecure kernel. This ISN'T an error. Continue to the next step.
Start up the phone and enable USB Debugging & Unknown Sources.
Download/run the 2011 Xperia Rooting Toolkit.
Shut down the phone.

I was able to finish setup using wifi
My Rogers Service isn't connecting
When I try to search Mobile Networks, it's not finding any network
When I go to manually enter my APN settings, I get a "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" as soon as I click on "Access point Names"
I've rebooted multiple times.
I even went through the insecure kernel flash, root, then flash back to the .587 kernel and the same thing happens.
Any ideas? Or should I just go back to CM10. I wanted to play with the stock image for a while to compare how fast stock and CM were. Just for my own knowledge and experience.

The generic rootable .431 firmware I created has an insecure kernel ONLY used to root the phone.
Once rooted, you MUST flash the proper kernel back or else the phone won't work.
(If you don't root, you must STILL flash the kernel to fix all the errors.)

At first once I went back to the .587 kernel (the last step), I still had a couple of those errors. I rebooted once more and now they are gone.
After running custom ROMs for so long, it's actually rather nice to be on stock (rooted). I don't hate the Sony UI in ICS as much as I did under GB. And it seems a lot smoother than CM (9 and 10). I wonder how long I'll stick with it....the "tinkerer" in my guesses about a month...LOL

What did you get during the rooting process? Watch the video. It must complete and reboot multiple times.
You must CLOSE FlashTool before running the Rooting Toolkit.
sry dude ... was my mistake i forgot to install adb drivers ... now i have root in my arc but i cant save contacts anymore i dont know what i uninstall DAMN!!!! someone have the list on ICS which apps do not uninstall? oh god

Hi,

Any ideas on what to do?

FAQ A.K.A The Basics
What is root?
Root is basically being able to run as a superuser in linux or admin in windows, giving you the ability to go deeper into the file system. It is a pre-requisite for most tweaks.
WTF is bootloader locked/unlocked?
For many people root is enough. However, if you want to change your kernel (for overclock etc.), try leaked builds or have a taste of custom roms such as Cyanogen Mod by FXP, you must unlock the bootloader.
What are ftf files?
They are essentially firmware files. They can be flashed with flashtool, and are used for recovering from a bad flash or getting updates from other regions.
List of ftfs can be found here.

Unlocking the bootloader
WARNING: You will lose Bravia Engine 2 for photos FOREVER! Before you start, do a full backup of your phone data with backup and restore app. Remember to take out the SD card after backup or you will LOSE ALL DATA. Unlocking the bootloader WIPES THE INTERNAL MEMORY (and SD CARD if you don’t TAKE IT OUT). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
First check if your bootloader can be unlocked. Type *#*#7378423#*#* and click service info. If it says bootloader unlockable, you may proceed to unlock it.
Follow Doomlord’s excellent guide here. Feel free to ask questions if in doubt.
Relocking the bootloader
If you want to use PC Companion or Sony Update Service to update your phone, you must relock the bootloader. Follow this thread by alivanov79.
Rooting the phone
DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit (the very easy way)
1. Follow DooMLoRD's guide here. It's that simple.
Flashing kernels (unlocked bootloaders)
1. Download Superuser zip and place it in the sd card.
2. Install flashtool from HERE.
3. Open up flashtool and select fastboot option by clicking the lightning icon.
4. Turn off your phone and hold the volume up button while plugging in the usb cable.
5. Download Kernel with CWM.
6. Select the kernel you downloaded in flashtool.
7. When the phone restarts, continuously press the volume up key.
8. You should end up in the recovery. Use volume keys to move up and down while using the power button to click.
9. Choose install zip from sdcard >> choose zip from external sd card >> navigate to the superuser zip you downloaded earlier.
10 .Reboot and you are done!
The After Root Guide
First of all, congrats on making it this far. You have proven to yourself to be a daring and adventurous individual. :victory:
Moving app data to SD card
1. Install DirectoryBind here. Choose the latest in alphabetical order.
2. Open up your game and install the data on internal memory. (skip this step if you have already done so)
3. Use a file explorer to create a new folder in your external SD card. Name it "Game data" or whatever.
4. Copy your whole game folder(eg. com.ea.games.nfs13_row ) to the folder you created on your external SD card, eg."Game data". You can use a computer if you want to. Remove the files inside the game folder in the internal memory but leave the game folder intact.
5. Open DirectoryBind and grant superuser permissions.
6. Add new entry by clicking the settings button, a.k.a the 3 dots at the bottom right.
7. Hold on the box for data path and point it towards game data in the "Game data" folder.
8. Hold on the box for target path and link it to the empty folder in internal memory.
9. Do not check the "Transfer files" option.
10. Click add.
11. Turn on the button beside Root Access OK. It mounts the game data at boot.
12. Click settings >> more >> backup database
13. Done!

Are you even serious? BE2 is a big Deal!! without it, your screen would just be a regular low end device screen. The fact that our SP's screen is already inferior to S3's super amoled, and you will still remove the bravia engine? what's wrong with you man. Don't encourage people here to lose their bravia engine.
Guys lets wait for a proper root. It will come. just be patient.

You lose ONLY for photos, not for videos. It's NOT a big deal, since it oversaturates the photos anyway.
I actually prefer it this way, but unlike you, I respect other people's opinions.

Sorry if my post offended you, what im just trying to say is, not everyone wants to lose their BE2, if it's cool with you then its fine, for everyone else I suggest wait a little bit more. here's a bit of infro from GSMarena btw:

The TFT screen is backed by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, which enhances contrast and sharpness, brings down noise and saturates colors to make them more pleasing to the eye. The reds in particular tend to really pop out.
The contrast is only average and colors are hardly the best around. Brightness levels are pretty decent, though.

AFAIK, you need to backup your TA, before you unlock your bootloader so you can restore it afterwards. Saw it on ZL's forum before. SP's forum is a bit empty, not much info and instructions on tinkering with our device. Im still waiting though

When purchased the phone in india in 1st week of may...when i checked the status of bootloader unlock allowed it said Yes. However, there was a s/w update to the firmware .211 after the update when today i saw the status it says bootloader unlock allowed No...do you think after the firmware upgrade they disabled this option????

I guess No.
Did you try any script available for root of other devices in our Xperia SP device. Cause i tried it, which end up in bootloader unlock allowed status to No. After that I reflash the stock firmware using Sony Update service, then I got back to the normal status bootloader unlock allowed status to Yes.

I did try many rooting tool available in XDA where it said tht it might have worked with SP maybe tht caused id....to reflash the stock rom do i need to use the repair tool from pc companion???

It doesn't work without root. Read the thread on backing up TA.
Will put it up once the phone can be rooted without unlocking bootloaders.
Root for locked bootloader is available now based on perfmon exploit by doom lord. You can try it..

older Xperia devices sometimes got issues after unlock of bootloader (BRICK after FOTA update) - you have been warned
why to unlock bootloader?
u can flash custom ROMs/Kernels
u dont need to worry if the new firmware can be rooted or not as with unlocked bootloader u can always ROOT ur device
Sony gives sneak-peaks/preview builds of latest OS which requires unlocked bootloaders, as they did with Xperia 2011/2012 line, so who knows may be Sony may give early builds of next android OS
Most of this is taken from lollylost100's his tutorial from ARC thread (all credits for that concise tutorial go to him, i have elaborated on a few things and added device specific changes)
btw i dont have this device, most of this testing was done remotely on a users phone... so thanks a lot to him for helping out!!!
[ before we begin unlocking bootloader ]
get the IMEI code for ur device: type *#06# in phone dialer to find it out, note only the digits (no dashes)
download the fastboot package with usb drivers (alternate drivers if the ones in package dont work OR this)
IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 8 you will need to enable few things to allow driver installation
make sure u have a windows PC with USB cable to connect the phone
power down ur phone and keeping the Volume Up button pressed connect the USB cable to PC this will trigger FASTBOOT mode and windows will start driver installation, extract the above package and point the driver install to that location (usb_driver) folder
once drivers are installed just disconnect cable and power on device
[ how to unlock ] (official way)
Go to: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and read everything!
At the bottom click 'Start Unlocking the Bootloader'
First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

after u have verified that u can unlock bootloader, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue"
you will get numerous prompts, read all info and if u agree click on "Accept"/"OK"/"Proceed"
finally u will get a "Create Unlock request" page, enter your IMEI (sometimes the last digit needs to be removed for this to work), name and email address
You should now receive your unique unlock key via EMAIL, SAVE THIS KEY SAFELY
Extract fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open fastboot folder
Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
Select 'Open command window here'
Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB Cable) [make sure drivers are installed as explained above)
In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the phone is correctly connected
Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key which u received earlier.
You're device should now be bootloader unlocked

before u relock bootloader u have to be on pure stock kernel (flash only the kernel.sin using flashtool), else the device WILL NOT BOOT after relock
Steps:
now start Flashtool and click on BLU button
u will be asked to connect device in flashmode
once u connect the device u will get a prompt to "Relock"
click on it and when prompted disconnect the device

relocking bootloader on c6833 worked perfectly without any issues. flashed c6833 .532 ftf then updated successfully via OTA. now have UK .257 on device.

S u can install custom roms without unlocking bootloader jus by root and Cwm.. But u can't flash a custom Kernel :thumbdown:.. So first root your device then install Cwm and then u can flash custom roms.. U ll be in stock Kernel only..

@DooMLoRD can you please make it possible to unlock the bootloader on devices where it says bootloader unlock allowed: no. For example, on the xperia m, you cannot even install cwm without an unlocked bootloader. Can you make this a possibility? Im sure all xperia devices would benefit from this as i believe it is slowing down developement especially in the xperia m. Thank you

that would mean hacking the bootloader.. and Sony have protected it VERY WELL!!!
the last time this was achieved was for the 2011 devices... in the last 3 years no one has been able to hack that bootloader...

you can only lose your TA partition if you unlock your bootloader, flashing a firmware ftf file does not touch that. please search and read the available threads on how to flash a firmware file and what you can and cannot check, the only things that people sometimes uncheck is wipe data, cache etc

Actually I'm new to Sony Xperia line. So i m a bit scared about all this TA thing.
I have watched some videos but none has an option to exclude ta but mine has. I m still not convinced. Can you confirm that you have done it with your phone and did you have an option to exclude TA in your flashtool software...

Just use a tool (or my guide if you're not a Windows user) to backup your TA partition and you won't have to worry about a thing (except losing the backup ).

Actually the problem is that i m updated to the latest firmware which cannot be rooted at the moment. So i want to first revert back to previous firmware and then root and backup.
And in the guide i didnt find the option for exclude TA in the screenshot.

When ive flashed ftf files, i have never checked anything in the exclude section of the flash tool, leave that as it is.
There are 2 versions of flashtool, one is an official from Sony, this tool does not have the option and can only be used with a unlocked bootloader. The flashtool that can be found here in the forum can be used wether you have unlocked or not, it was originally designed back when the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 came out.
So to conclude
1. Make sure you have the latest version of flashtool installed.
2. Download your preferred firmware.
3. Open flashtool and click the lightning icon at top left.
4. make sure bootmode selected is Flashmode.
5. Select your firmware file when prompted.
6. Flashtool will now process the file (give it a minute or 2 to do this)
7. It will now prompt for you to connect phone in flash mode.
8. make sure your phone is turned off, in order to connect in flash mode while holding volume down
connect the usb, keep everything held down until the flash starts.
9. Follow onscreen instructions, it will take around 5 minutes for this to flash, flashtool will tell you went to
disconnect and reboot.

Or just wait for a root exploit to show up for the latest version. I mean unless you're planning to flash CyanogenMod or something now then why worry about it?

And the Sony's official flashtool require some login details. i went through a new user option. But i didnt receive a confirmation email.

You missed something, you're supposed to edit the configuration file so that the program will allow use without a login. But it only works for unlocked bootloaders.

Sony's flashtool only works if you have a unlocked bootloader, go ahead try and use it if you dont believe me, the software will actaully tell you, but hey go ahead.

OHHH!! Thank You for correcting me...
I m damn scared right now...to flash even a stock rom on new device.. This was not the case with samsung. They didnt have this bootloader thing earlier, dont know about current gen samsung phones.

Do not touch the bootloader at the moment, there is a reason why people are not unlocking their bootloader as doing this breaks camera functionality. Don't be scared, it is quite a simple procedure.
Flashing with flash tool will NOT break your phone and you can airways force a repair with pccompanion.
Just try it, it's perfectly safe

New Samsungs are worse, you can't restore them to a state where Samsung can't detect that you've been running custom software on it.

Unless you have a TA backup in which case you can do whatever you want.
I'm too much of a ***** to confirm the following theory, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if someone who flashed the wrong TA-backup was able to start the phone in fastboot mode, unlock the bootloader again (perhaps with the unlock token matching the new TA), and flash his own TA from CyanogenMod or something. (Do not quote me on this please, not taking responsibility for someone breaking their phone trying this.)
Restoring a ta that did not come from your phone will result in a hard brick, nobody should try it EVER

Hi all,
I am kinda new here and would like to put a question, hoping it's not a repetition (I have been browsing though this forum thoroughly, but apparently couldn't find a proper answer). This is the situation:
- bought a used Z2
- Z2 was from UK O2 operator and it had operator lock and unlockable bootloader
- network operator lock has been cleared with unlock code
- O2 customized firmware has been wiped away by flashing a recent 5.0.2 stock lollipop
- unlockable bootloader still exists so cannot upload any customized/rooted .zip system
Clearly, the only thing I can do to modify this phone is to upload .FTF firmares to it, due to unlockable bootloader. Right now, I see available online only unmodified stock .FTF firmwares.
THE QUESTION: is there ANY way to create a pre-rooted .FTF file (modding not strictly necessay but rooting essential) so that I can upload it to the phone?

You can't modify .ftf files as they are signed by sony. easiest solution is to root your phone with kingroot , install nut's dual recovery and then flash any stock prerooted zip (or a custom rom if you want) you can find on this forum. kingroot will be gone when you finish the .zip install too

Wouldn't just installing kingroot be enough for a simple rooting of the stock fw?
All I need is the ability to run some apps which need root (e.g. ad-away, set dns, etc.) and nothing more. Is the latest version tested on Z2 running 5.0.2?

Kingroot works fine on 5.0.2 but by itself will not disable sony RIC and you won't get a writable system. Nut's dual recovery will disable RIC on boot, just install it after rooting and you should be good to go.
I suggested flashing a preroot zip just because i don't like kingroot app to manage root permissions and it's hard to replace it with supersu. flash a preroot zip and you'll end with a clean stock rom+supersu+nut's dual recovery and fully writable system

Drop bk to kitkat, root and recovery no problem using practically any tool, I used Z2 dual recover installer, once it reboots to recovery you flash su update from chainfire, rooted and recovery done.
Then just use prf creater to make an ftf into a flashable rooted room, yes you can add root and recovery to that too, flash that from recovery, job done.
You can use lollipop ftf to do that if you wish.

Go back to kk? why? it's a waste of time nowadays... the solution i mentioned won't even need to touch flashtool it's easier and quicker...
Just one last question: reading thrads about 5.1.1 it looks that it's due in a few days.
Would it be better to root now (as kingroot is still untested on 5.1.1 ) and then flash 5.1.1.ftf or just wait for it and then root?

Very true and if all are happy then it's all good, just don't forget to check ya phone afterwards for all the intrusive crap that kingroot throws on ya phone, tried it and it definitely didn't root my Z2 or a load of others.

Sure, i also don't like kingroot. Like i said before it does root fine but doesn't disable ric, flashing nut's recovery after solves this.
And if you flash a preroot zip after there will be no traces of kingroot on the phone. Downgrade to kk and flashtool is still not necessary...

I have been though your procedure and, I must say, kingroot and nut's recovery installed well. Now the phone is rooted. Also added Purify app. There is just one problem left.
At the moment I have a stock 23.1.A.1.28 FW installed, just wanted to make a try with a 23.2.A.1.62 to see how the whole process goes. Instead of preparing the full .zip file, I already had a ready one, so I uploaded it into the phone, plus another .zip for gapps. Then, trying to start recovery, the phone does not enter recovery, but boots normally.
I know that nut's recovery is installed well, as, after installation process, it showed up a recovery (philz's?) with grey keys, and I also went though its menus to check it up. Right now these are the ways I tried, failing, to start recovery:
- immediately after switching on the phone (after vibration), pressing volume up
- immediately after switching on the phone (after vibration), pressing volume down
- starting manually (any of the 3 proposed recoveries) from NDR UTILS app
- starting manually from XZRecovery app
None of these methods work, the phone sometimes makes a double reboot (i.e. stays at "sony" first screen goes black and then goes back to sony screen again) but always ends up with loading android system. Is this maybe due to my locked bootloader? In this case would the only option be every time doing FTF upgrade+kingroot+nut's? Or is there some sure method to boot the recovery and install whatever I want?
After all, if it started once, I believe it can start again....

Nut's dual recovery works fine on LB (i have unlockable bootloader too) probably something you installed messed up the recoveries, did you install/update busybox from the play store? Nut's dual recovery includes it's own busybox which can't be replaced / updated.
Reinstalling the recoveries with the installer on your pc should fix the problem and make them work again.

it looks like the device was somewhat messed up. U were right that i had installed another busybox from gplay, nevertheless uninstalling it did not sort out any effect. Also nut's reinstall failed. Maybe there was some chaos still inside due to experiments done before using kingroot, like, for instance, trying towelroot.
This is how I acted to solve the issue:
- downloaded most recent fw with xperifirm (Telekom.de one, full of useless apps)
- completely flashed phone with .ftf
- reinstalled kingroot
- reinstalled nut's recovery
Now the phone is back again rooted and I deleted some stupid apps with root app delete.
I am now eagerly waiting for 5.1.1 release, hope there will be a vanilla firmware somewhere this week ))
Best would be to already download a patched .zip image.

It's all part of the experience of learning what's best, I always only use dual recovery because windows can install it directly and root at same time, there used to be plenty of rooting apps like kingroot but you don't see so many anymore, but I'm glad you're sorted, when ya get 5.1.1 just use prfcreater to make it into flashable zip then you don't lose root and have to go through the process all over again.

I am really happy: for a couple of months I thought I was buried behind that nasty unlockable bootloader, and now i discovered it's even better, as rooting it without touching bootloader allows the software to work at 100% of it specs
Coming from Samsung to Sony is kinda rough at first for nibbling but when the right instruments are present and clear it's worth dealing with superior hardware.
Also, must say that Sony is lately improving its behaviour, after so many years of mafia attitudes towards buyers

I've had Samsung, HTC, Apple, blackberry and finally stuck with Sony, I guess they all have pros and cons, Samsung phones are the easiest to mod and flash, Sony is quite daunting for newcomers very much like HTC. Can be tricky to learn.
Horses for courses and all that, I much prefer a rooted phone with locked boot, no particular reason except the drm keys etc, I do think camera is better on lb, than the quality on ul, although there is a drm restore mod on cross Dev, for ul, it does make xreality work, but it doesn't remove the missing key error in security tests.
I read on a page that once drm keys are gone, Sony won't honour the warranty, very much like Samsung and the knox counter, I'm not sure tho, but I do know I'll always remain Lb and stock based rom.
Only problem I have is getting wifi tethering working properly, it's doing my head in, 4 weeks of decompiling and editing and still can't get my phone to broadcast on any other channel except 1.

Btw1, when I reflashed last evening the phone was also complaining when I went to hotspot section in order to configure it.... I think they messed up something, but maybe 5.1.1 will have fix so let's see...
I have a couple of Mediacom X500U, which I discovered, besides being fairly nice phones after more than a year of use, that are basically rebranded HTC phones (this comes out of their factory hex code detected by Linux). Do you think they could be modded like for generic HTC or never heard about them?

randed HTC, but no, I don't think a HTC section would help.
I think it's an Italian release, dual simply phone, simply Google pointed to an Italian forum androidiani androidiani, run the link through a webpage translator and you may be in luck for root and rom, I think towelroot may root it.
Actually framaroot already offered rooting at the price of a horrible hack (3-4 reboots before device is ready when turning on or rebooting, plus device instability on heavy loads), never tried towelroot on it.
But problem is not about rooting rather than getting rid of horrible stock firmware. The latest fw edition by Mediacom was a total disaster (forums cry loud) and I thought it would be great to try to put some mod on the phones: this is why I had in mind to ask you if there is a general toolkit for HTC phones (like flashtool for Sony) which I could use to try to take care of it and experiment....
