Old CWM on EMMC....question about flashing - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK so my wife just got a nexus 7 so now I can play around with her nook color
It is on some older stock B&N firmware and has an old clockwork mod recovery (in the v3 area I think) that was installed way back when on the EMMC. Is it on for me to flash current ROMs and then update to CWM v6 once I am on cm or something?
Or do I have to update CWM first and then I can flash away?
Also, is everything a bootable SD now for this? Is it OK yo have CWM on EMMC?

You can use the old CWM to flash, but some of the older versions do not do a good job of wiping things before flashing the CM rom. And you really should wipe your data before flashing CM over stock. If it is version 3.2.0.1 or newer it is ok. You can get the latest CWM (v5.5.0.4, both in a bootable SD and in a version that can be flashed to emmc) in my tips thread linked in my signature.

Thanks A lot man. just got it booted up into CM7.2 just to use as a stable base. I'll update CWM here in a bit, but i just wanted something other than stock on there.
i never remember CM7.2 being so laggy though....just really used to JellyBean these days i guess...lol
but thanks again. and instead of starting new threads asking stuff, how is ICS on this thing? noticably smoother? faster, everything work (HD youtube videos, HD video playback, and Wifi are my main concerns)

It is better than a while back. (Not faster than 7.2) Non-opengl is still most stable. Still no HD, Netflix. Wifi works good.

Flashing problem
hey guys, its my first post here:
i tried to put CWM on my NC from here: ^^ wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barnes_%26_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide ^^, The root was successful, but when i tried to flash CWMRecovery, its said that my SD Card need to be mounted. I didnt know what to do, so i format the SD in my Nook Color. After turning it off, it doesnt go on. Only when its charging or connected to the laptop, it starts first with the ^^raeding forever screen^^, then the the ^^n screen^^, then a yellow screen and then either it goes off or it tries to ^^clearing data^^ but stops by about 30 percent and goes off. I would be grateful for any help! FALLS JEMAND AUF DEUTSCH HELFEN KANN, UM SO BESSER!

Flashed Honeycomb fine, cant get back to CM7

So I've been using my NC for a while flashing roms no problem. I tried honeycomb emmc and it works but I want to go back to cm7. Didn't make a nandroid backup (wanted to start from scratch on purpose) . I can reflash honeycomb fine. I can also always boot to cwr from my recovery SD I made. What am I doing wrong to prevent cm7 from booting after flashed? I want to continue loading cm7 from emmc, not the SD card. Any ideas?
Should add I've tried cm7 nightly 114 and another 103 I believe, which was working perfectly before I flashed honeycomb. It displays the cm7 boot logo then just an all black but still powered on screen. Never makes it to the boot animation.
Kinda at a loss for ideas here. I'm sure it is something simple that I missed, but I'm not finding anything like this on XDA. Right now my nook is either booting to recovery and sitting there, or just a totally useless paperweight. I know it isn't bricked, I just don't know what else to try to get back to CM7.
shamless bump. I have spare time today to play with this.
Did you wipe /system and /data before you flashed CM7?
Absolutely.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
Are there additional steps I'm missing? This is the first issue I've had flashing the nook or any android device.
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
I seem to recall CM7 not booting for me after one of my play sessions. Although I hadn't loaded Honeycomb. The only way I could get back was to flash Nook 1.2 from a CWR sdcard and start over.
I just flashed nook froyo 1.2 that keeps CWR and still am unable to boot. If it wasn't for booting to my CWR SD, I'd be scared I bricked it.
What are some known good ways to get back to 100% stock? I don't mind re-rooting. Is there a RUU file or something?
I also recall having to remove the emmc CWR that ROMmanager installed (without really asking or making clear what it was doing).
In the DEV section there's a zip that removes the CWR boot and returns to stock boot. I'd try that.
I'm surprised there are no experts on hand to offer more guidance - it's a bit like sleepy hollow here!
I did try that zip if we are thinking of the same thing. IDK what is going on. I can't get it to boot on 1.0.1 BN, 1.2 BN, CM7....I'm really worried now.
Sorry this is not an answer to your question, but I wondered why you didn't like honeycomb and want to go back to cm7?

Honeycomb isn't a complete port... it has no hardware acceleration and doesn't do a lot of things that CM7 can, probably due to the nonavailability of the source code.

[Q] {Q} trouble with a stock 1.3.0 nook color

ok so after 3 days of trying, i keep getting stuck on a boot-loop I am asking for some help.
before I begin, I have successfully rooted and installed cm7 on 2 nooks that came factory 1.2,I have searched google and these forums but can't find anything with my specific needs.
I have followed the directions on this thread to a tee:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
i am using a bootable cwm card (2GB) (cwm version 3.0.2.8)
after installing ManualNooter-4-5-18.zip then ManualNooter-4-6-16.zip I remove the sd card and reboot and I get a boot-loop with the "n color" screen animation. It has not booted successfully yet.
I have already used the 8 failed boots method to restore to factory and re-registered the nook.
Then I redid everything again and im back at the boot-loop.
any ideas
i do not have an answer but this answers my question of whether I want to run manual nooter on my 1.3 or try cm7. the cm7 steps seems more intimidating
Well i tried several more times last night with no luck. Then i got brave and just wiped everything (data, system, cache, dalvick) then flashed cm7 and gapps straight from my cwm boot card. I somehow
Ended up with a fully functional nook. App market works. Rebooted several times to be sure. I even tried usb host with my homemade adapter. Mouse, keyboard, and sandisk cruzer all work splendidly thru a powered hub.
My only mistake was i cant find my backup of stock 1.3 rom. Is there one floating around?

If I'm understanding correctly, you're trying to go from CM to 1.3, correct?
From what you've described, I suspect Clockworkmod 3.0.2.8 is your problem. If you look carefully as you format /data in preparation for reloading the BN 1.3 firmware, I think you'll see that the format is actually failing. That version of CWM doesn't handle the partitions correctly.
You want 3.2.0.1. See the edits at the top of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735
If you're already on CM7.1, you probably have the correct version of CWM installed. You can save yourself a step by formatting the /data and /system partitions using that, then continuing on with the rest of the procedure for restoring BN 1.3. I went through all this myself a few days ago while preparing to go to BN 1.4.1.
I forgot to mention in my last post that i realized i was using the wrong cwm image and i burned another card with cwm 3.2.01.
I was still getting a boot-loop so i wiped everything and went straight to cm7.

I didn't read your post correctly.
I had a stock nook that i want to install cm7 on. Not the other way around. I asked about a stock 1.3 file just in case i need to do a restore. The nook is done. Its running cm7 just fine and i have given it back to my friend.
I really need to get myself one :-(
I usually mess around with my sons but he's at his mothers for the weekend with it. After christmas im getting one. Dont know if it'll be a color or a nook tablet but im getting one for sure!

If you intended to install CM7 from beginning, then why you wasted time messing around with ManualNooter?
Im still rather new to working on nooks. I thought that it was required to use manual nooter first. Im still not sure.
Can someone clarify for mr. If i just bought a nook and i want cm7 on it, whats the best procedure?

The only boot loop issue I'm aware of is related to Adobe AIR and Flash. The fix is to uninstall them and then reinstall from Market.

I hope you do use Windows at some points.
Let's put it this way.
You bought a PC with Windows XP pre-installed, get home, you don't want XP, so you install Windows 7 on the PC. You just whack the XP.
Same theory applied here, B&N shipped their NC out with the original stock ROM, which is Froyo-based OS. You want to install CM7, which is Gingerbread-OS ROM. You just whack the stock and install CM7.
oh I get it know. so its pretty easy if you want to go straight to cm7 just wipe and flash.
After reading some posts from the nook tablet section, i guess i'm getting a nook color.
what a shame about the locked bootloader :-(
i didnt technically solve the boot loop issue, i just erased everything, but should I mark this as solved and if so how?
The current Nook Color bootloader is not locked. The Nook Tablet's is. I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out, though. The bootloader on the Motorola Droid 2 is also locked, and there's quite an active Cyanogenmod community around it. The only problem is that we're stuck with whatever kernels B&N release, so ICS may be a long way off. I suspect the NC will remain the tuner's machine of choice, but the performance on the NT is very nice. If you can live with a rooted B&N ROM, it's a nice device for now.

No, it seems that some 1.3 based NC units will bootloop if 4.6.16 is used to root them. I'm not sure why. Even after repartitioning to original nook partition sizes, or using CWM 3.2.01 (which supports the new partitioning), it'll still bootloop if 4.6.16 is used. Might be because of the different kernal included, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know for sure. They root fine with 4.5.18. Haven't tried one with the new 1.4.1 compatible nooters.
To the original poster;
I'm having the same problem here, installed 4.15 successfully, installed 4.16 and am getting stuck in boot loop at the rainbow nook color screen.
I'm not understanding the 8 boot fail procedure though. Is this when you let the boot loop run through 8 times or when you get to the point of when the boot loop starts, shut the NC off and power it back on?
Also, to install cm7, all you did was put it on your sd card, and installed it through cwm?
The 8 boot method if i recall correctly is when you boot the nook and wait until the splash screen shows up immediately hold the power button and shut it down. Repeat 7 more times. If you did it correctly it should take over and do a restore on its own.
If you want to go straight to CM7 I dont think you need to go thru with this procedure because if you create a bootable cm7 card and insert it in your nook while its off then power up, it should boot you into cwm recovery. Once in the recovery you can flash cm7.

Thank you good sir! I was stuck in boot loop forever and couldn't find a clean explanation of the 8 boot fail process. I always tried to turn it off when the rainbow nook color screen came up.
I got it reset, made a flashable CWM SD card with 3.2 and then flashed CM7 on there and it works great!!
That was very frustrating, thank you!
Dont mention it, Glad to here I was able to help you out. I felt the same way when I was in that situation. Lots of googling to get a clearer idea on what that 8 boot method entailed. CM7 really makes it feel like a totally different device.
To all the devs that work on these projects, thank you

[Q] Has rooting messed up my wifi? :(

Hey guys,
Since I've had my Nook Color (installed CM7 as soon as I got it), I've never been able to connect to my wifi, I always thought it was my router's fault. The other day I got my girlfriend one, and installed cm9 on it for her. It connected to wifi straight away and browsed the internet with no problem. I thought maybe CM9 thus had a fix for wifi and installed it on mine, but alas, still no internet Has anyone had problems with their wifi on the Nook and been able to fix it? I REALLY want to connect, I just don't know what else I can do. Would messing with the partitions possibly cause this? It's definitely my Nook that is the problem, cause I did the EXACT same installation of CM9 on both of them, and only my wifi isn't working properly. Also, mine tends to freeze quite often on CM9, and hers does not?
ANY help will be really appreciated!!
Thanks,
Rudi

See if you can go back to stock and set up wifi first, then install CM.
Look here for how to do it easily:

I've got some new information:
1) If I triple boot using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448186
Then my wifi works.
2) If I revert back to stock, then my wifi works.
3) BUT if I try to install to emmc using this method:

Then it doesn't work??
Does that give any clues to why it isn't working? I really want to install Cm7 internally than on the SD card. Also, my girlfriend's nook runs CM9 smoothly, mine keeps freezing
Thanks for the help so far, really appreciate it!

Are you doing a factory reset with your CWM card before you flash CM to emmc? The freezing makes it sound like your old data is carrying over.
Yea, I've done a few factory resets by holding in the n key when powering on. I've also cleared the Dalvik cache, /data and /system in Recovery.

What version of CWM are you using to do the clearing of /data? You must use version 3.2.0.1 or newer or /data will not clear properly on the newer Nooks.

The reason the bootable cards are working is because they start with a clean /data. The reason stock works is because the /data is setup properly to run with stock. I still believe there is stuff carrying over in the /data on emmc. I don't know more to tell you other than to keep trying to clear /data on emmc with CWM. Watch for error messages when you do.
You are using the CWM on the bootable SD from the eyeballer thread aren't you? Not the one on the dual boot card or emmc?

It's weird though, because I've been clearing it constantly for like 3 days trying to fix it. Maybe I need a later version of CWM? Where can one find the latest version?

I'm still on the triple boot on SD (on which the wifi was working), but now when I turned the screen on from sleeping, the wifi isn't working anymore! It just goes "scanning....connectng...disconnected" and loops like that. I've tried forgetting the connection, and turning my wifi off and back on again, but it's still not working. CM9 tends to do that. Try CM7.... You know it may be your nook is defective somehow.
That IS with CM7 Flip, I hope it's not a problem with the actual Nook, cause there's 0% chance of getting another any time in the near future. It also often freaks out, as if it is getting many ghost touches. I have to turn off the screen fror a while to fix that. This is such a downer
ps, I can't seem to figure out how to use that new CWM. I'm used to making a bootable SD with the eyeballer IMG file, but this one is just a zip. How do I use it to make the bootable SD? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I really don't understand

OK, that zip was meant for flashing to your emmc. If you want to use it in a bootable SD follow these instuctions. Put eyeballers SD in your PC. Unzip the downloaded racks CWM zip. There will be two files in the root, uRecImg and uRecRam. Copy those to the SD. On the SD will be two other files, uImage and uRamdisk. Rename those to .bak. Then rename uRecImg to uImage and uRecRam to uRamdisk. Now you can remove the SD and put in the nook and boot. You should now have the new 5+ CWM.
Thanks I'm still a bit confused though, don't you make a bootable CWM SD so that you can boot into CWM from the sd card and THEN flash CM7 or CM9 to your Nook? How would I flash CWM to emmc?

Use the 3.2.0.1 card to flash the new Racks CWM. It will put it on emmc for use later. Then you can boot to it directly using the keys at boot time. It's been so long since I have used stock I can't remember the key combinations. Or you can flash CM7 to emmc with 3.2.0.1 and use the boot menu that comes with CM7 to boot to emmc recovery, which is now 5+. Then you can use that to wipe /data or flash new ROMs.
Hey again Last night I tried for quite a while to get that CWM5 to work, by making an eyeballer boot sd, then putting those two files in the CWM5 zip in place of the existing ones. But when I turn the Nook on, it just hangs at the CWM loading screen (with the 2 skulls)?

Before flashing, did you do a full wipe?
CWM > Wipe data & factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and wipe your system partition?
I have a Nook Color as well, but I'm running CM7. I read somewhere that your CWM must be version 6.xxx to properly flash CM10 based roms. I believe that is your problem. Btw, CM7 has better performance on this old device.
flashing
i actually never flashed clockwork. all i did was use winimage to partition the card, then just dragged and dropped gapps and cm 10.1.2 20130815 nightly. then it broke after installing a few apps. ive been looking for CWM to wipe everything. from wut i understand CWM wipes it COMPLETELY unlike the 2 stock methods i used before. its like it just wont boot from the sd card anymore. it installs the CM but after its done it just boots up to nook. if you or anyone can tell me where to find CWM it would be much appreciated. i dont understand their site layout and the youtube directions dont have working links for CWM. any ideas? and thx so much for the response. i know from reading now that cm7 was wut i shud have installed instead of the newer extremely unstable cm9 and cm 10.2.
ALSO, im reading about CWM software is related to SD card size? i only have a 32gb sd which is not mentioned in any of the tutorials on how to use CWM. does it rly matter?

ALSO, im reading about CWM software is related to SD card size? i only have a 32gb sd which is not mentioned in any of the tutorials on how to use CWM. does it rly matter?

Sure thing. Here are the instructions for flashing CWM to your internal flash using a microSD card. You'll need a microSD card reader for this. Look on Amazon for the IOGear MicroSD card reader, I bought it recently for $6 in total.
Read this thread thoroughly, it is simple enough. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12797652
Also, I would suggest you install CM7 MiRaGe rom instead of stock CM7. It performs really well, and I have it overclocked to 1.2GHz stable. Here is the MiRaGe thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873

Nah, it works man. There's just a little bug you need to take care of. Go to the Mirage thread again, on the bottom of the first post, you'll see it says "wifi disconnecting? Read <link>". It's an easy fix. I had it too.

Returning to CM7 and Nook won't access Market

Hello XDA peeps.
I've had my Nook color for about 3+ years. Have had both my wife and mine running old versions of CM7 on the SD card without issue.
I recently dug mine out to set up for the kids (for a trip we're taking starting this weekend) and first installed CM10 (10.3 I think). loaded and was able to get apps running w/o issue but the poor old Nook and CM10 was so sluggish I felt it was just too much for this legacy device, so I reflashed to the CM7.2.0 [stable]
loaded just fine, but when I went to install GAPPS it installed fine, but will not allow me to access my account now.
no matter how many times I try, it tells me the password does not match for my account.
I know for a fact the password is the right one, and I can get on the Play store just fine on my Galaxy S3 using the same credentials.
I even reflashed the GAPPS to an older version and no luck.
Any thoughts? Really stuck here, since we're leaving Saturday morning and I want to have both Nooks up and running current versions of our boys fav games to pass the time. right now it has no app store, so it's pretty much a stripped Android tablet.

You said you were running CM7 on SD. How did you install the CM10? Then what did you do to get back to CM7? What wiping did you do?

I actually have the CM10 on the root of the device. I thought I had put it on the SD card, but didn't. (just found this out by accidentally powering on the tablet w/o the card in it)
So, currently downloading the CM 10.2.1 update (from 10.1.3), and perhaps it will fix the sluggishness.
I have a third stock Nook that I have not touched in years that I'm going to flash on the SD card...see if I can't get it to CM7.2 w/o any issues.
but previously I had wiped the card twice and attempted to Reinstall CM7.2.
I think the fault lies in the steps I was following to burn the SD card.
Told me to add the gapps AFTER installing CM7
I was pretty sure in the past I put both on the same SD at the same time.
or it is possible the Google two-step verification/authorization is not compatible with the older Market app. I can get on the Play store just fine on CM10 (but it did have me open in the browser to verify the device).

I don't think CM10.2 is going to help. CM7 is the best for NC. I would wipe the internal CM10 you have on there and install CM7 to internal. Be sure to put the right gingerbread gapps on there too.

yes, thank you. I feel anything higher than CM7 just boggs the processor on these dated tablets. For a kids' tablet, it's just fine and will run most of their games/books and it remains snappy. CM10 just feels overloaded. It is sluggish and slow to respond. I'll try to get it moved back to CM7.
I've been trying to flash the other Nook, but after much effort, I have not been able to get it to boot into recovery.
I have the same card set-up, but I cannot get it to start with the card....constantly goes to the B&N root.

Sometimes it is difficult to get the NC to boot from an SD. See my NC Tips thread linked in my signature and read section A9.

Thanks Leapinlar,
Still running into issues. now on BOTH Nooks.
I was pretty sure I remember something about an updated B&N ROM that was signaled with a Green sticker on the box, which the troublesome boot one has.
I am using the generic_sdcard_v1.3.img + cm-7.2.0-encore.zip + gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip all being burned via Terminal on Mac.
The only thing that has changed since I was dabbling with these in the past was the CM release.
I am not able to find my original bookmark of the tutorial I used to use (2+ years ago) so I think there might be a flaw in the instructions I'm following now. (for instance, the instructions I'm following now, the dd= command isn't proceeded by 'sudo' and without the sudo command, it errors out when trying to write the generic SD image to the disc (says disc is not available or locked).
gonna keep trying, because I want to get these up and working for our trip...we have 36+ hours of driving over the course of a week, so I know they'll get bored of looking at sights, reading books, watching DVDs, etc. Mainly for my own sanity, since I'll be driving.
**EDIT* i found the original tutorial I used years ago in my trove of bookmarks. It was the original GlassKeys tutorial. gonna give that a shot and report back with my success/errors.
Well, one thing, if you are going to use that old original image file you need to rename the CM zip to begin with update-. That will not help with the booting issue, but will make it so that image will recognize the CM zip.
I have an updated image zip in my updated instructions for NC SD installs linked in my signature.

Thanks. should have mentioned that I did rename the file to "update"
got my old CM10 to boot into Linux penguin and it seemed to be doing it's thing, after formatting the SD card following the GlassKeys instructions, but it is now booting to CM10 still by default and if I hold the "n" key for the boot menu on Cyanoboot and try to boot from SD card (normal or recovery) it just stays on that screen until I power it down.
as for the second, untouched Nook, I did the GlassKeys instructions to the SD card for that and it loaded to Penguin and went through all the install procedures, but now it still boots to the B&N emm setup screen.
wish I had never taken the other to CM10. now I have two Nooks that aren't acting properly.
thing that bugs me is the first one was running fine, just market wouldn't recognize my sign-in...now both are jacked.:silly:
SUCCESS!!!
So thank you goes out to leapinlar!!!
I dropped what I had been doing on my system as far as the files I was burning and read over all your FAQ and tutorial.
I downloaded the files in your how-to and had the tricky OE ROM flashed in a jiff!
The second one is installing now on the peguin screen and JUST now loaded to the CM7.2 bootloader screen.
Still used the GlassKeys instrucitons on how to burn via Terminal on OS X, but used your files (generic-sdcard-v1.3-CM7-9-10-10.1-10.2-11-largest-Rev8c.zip )
My original issue, I have found through all this, was that the Market wouldn't allow me to sign in...well that is an issue with the 2-step verification for my Google account I had activated (someone tried to hack my account, so I had it on). Once I turned it off, I was able to open the market and sign in.
Thanks again for your help leapinlar....check this one off!
Going to update both tonight with our boys' fav apps and games and get ready to hit the road first thing Sat morning!
If you want something newer I found that cm10.0 was pretty fast on nook color. Better than cm7. Anything newer I also found was to slow and laggy 10.1+. If interested the last nightly cm10.0 rom and gapps are over in the development fourm.
