Story of my Atrix - Atrix 4G General

Well, this is the story of the rise and death of my Atrix.
Bought this wonderful phone on the 6th of August 2011, after reading reviews of it online, for a cheap price of $146 with dock and a 2 year contract.
Lots of exciting moment, especially when the 2.3 update came, and again with the CM9.
However, I had LOTS of issues with the touch screen, and had to send it in for repair 5 times.
Well, all was fine till about 15 days ago, when I dropped my phone, and the digitizer shattered. Well, its fine, I told myself, I'll just buy one from ebay, well, it is easy to install after all.
Yeah, well the item arrived AFTER my warranty was over, but i was like "meh, I won't need it anyway"
Replacing the digitizer was very easy, however, after I replaced it, I realised part of the digitizer was not working =(
Yeah, ****. Well what choice do I have? I sent it to Motorola for repair.
Well, I went there and they were friendly and nice, as usual, but when they scanned my serial number, all hell broke lose.
"Uh, well you phone is out of warranty, including the 3 months grace period"
"Um, yes, well I know that"
"There will be an evaluation charge of $25"
"About how much will it cost?"
"Well, the parts about $150"
"So a total of $175?"
"Uh, yes, would you like to reconsider"
(I would love to, but I can't. My carrier is screwing with me, and I cannot cancel this plan. I am paying $30 for 12GB, and if I renew the plan, it will drop to 2GB. I have no choice but to keep my atrix)
"Um, not really. Just send it in"
Well, two days pass and I was in school when I received a call. (Yeah, I'm a student, still in secondary school actually)
Obviously I can't pick up, so I just let it ring...
Well, I tried to call back, but no one answers. (Dear Motorola, answer your phone PLEASE)
This goes on for a few days, but one day, I was lucky enough to pick up.
A little tired here, its 12.54AM and I have school tomorrow, so I'll cut it short.
In short, after consulting with their managers, Motorola decided they will not fix my atrix. Instead, they will replace it with a BRAND NEW atrix 2
Obviously, I'm chuffed to bits. Is the atrix 2 better? Not really. However, I do really appreciate the service shown here. Is it google at work here?
I have no idea. However, Motorola has just won a loyal customer.
The whole point of this post is simple.
1. Motorola, please don't allow flaws like the Atrix digitizer and wifi+bluetooth to get pass QC
2. Motorola, please pick up your phones. You are a phone company. Doesn't reflect well if your phones are useless
3. Motorola, thanks for being such a good company. You are really setting a good example here. I cannot describe how much I really appreciate your efforts here.
4. Goodbye Atrix forum. You all have been really nice, and I am sure this phone will continue to exceed your expectations, and I am sad I won't be here to witness this.

Lucky American.
Why no one is ready to pick up my Atrix and swap it with anything non-nVidia crap based?

They're seriously allowed to do that? Replace your phone with a completely different one that's largely accepted as being worse?

1. The warranty is over. They are not bound to do anything.
2. I agreed. I would not want a phone that has no warranty that has failed every 2 months anyway.

nVidia makes all of their SoCs closed-source. It shouldn't matter if you run stock, but it makes it makes it much harder for devs to work their magic.

if your thinking of buying a droid x and rooting it then think again http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2010/07/14/droid-x-actually-self-destructs-if-you-try-to-mod-it/ . if you dont care to root it then disregard this. if you try to even root it you will brick it!?!?!? why would they do that????
If you'd rather not support your product if someone else meddles with it, that's totally fine. Void their warranties; don't kill your own product to spite them.

It is fairly easy to jailbreak an iphone these days... my dad jailbroke his 3gs a few days after he got it and he is the guy who's VCR always flashed 12:00...
It's all fear mongering. It's the same protection as Milestone devices and the Droid. All of them have the OMAP3 eFuse.
Look up Steven Bird's blog (I can't post links yet) he explains it. Said that it's more than likely not to brick the phone. He's got donations up and going now to try and get one to test it himself.
Yup, this FUD has been debunked. Enough with the eFuse DROID X Talk Already
The response from Motorola was that it wouldn't "brick" the phone, but if the efuse was triggered it would render the phone unusable until it was repaired with motorola software. Which pretty much means the folks here at XDA will likely find a way around the efuse without too much trouble

Or they could, I dunno, download it from Motorola's site. Really, all they're doing is a checksum and giving you the opportunity to flash an RUU if they don't match. No Moto repair required.
Wow Motorola, way to go... u just scared off about 3/4 of u'r customers right there. Talk about BS limiting a user on what he/she is able to load on to HIS/HER own phone. Ridiculous!
It's not FUD. It may not "brick" the phone, but it's another attempt to stop the end user, the person that legally purchased the phone, from tinkering with it. Just as the quote I posted above says, they're not inventors. They are profiteers afraid of people, at home, doing what they do better than them.
My friend and I had this conversation the other day. He stated that Sprint has a right to protect their network and any phone they sell you with a discount for buying a plan. He is correct, to a point. Sprint doesn't want us using our phones for more than they give us (despite claims of "unlimited" data) because they have to protect their profit margins. They also don't want us tinkering with our phones because we, tinkerers, could break them. Insurance doesn't cover "tinkering". Sprint is taking a huge up-front hit by selling us the phone as cheap as they do but they recoup that cost by locking us into 2-year contracts. They need to keep us in those contracts to turn a profit. So, I feel they have a right to protect that until the contract is up.
Or, on the other hand, those that purchase their phones outright, without contracts and without subsidies, should have the right to tinker all they like... including the consequences.
E-fuse, what?
I still don't believe it was FUD because of the reasons I mentioned above, but it was successfully bypassed.
EDIT: The e-fuse wasn't bypassed. They got root, which isn't watched by the e-fuse. Putting a new ROM on the phone would, though. Getting root is a start, though, and should allow them to figure out how the e-fuse works. Then I'm sure they can bypass it. It'll just take some more time.

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

Whats the deal with the locked bootloader on some Moto devices? I hear the term but I'm not familiar with what it means (EVO owner). I assumed it had to do with not being able flash ROM's and/or root. Can anybody explain?

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.
The Atrix has already been rooted:

I wouldn't be shock if Motorola backs off the boot loader block. Pretty funny huh. I was talking to the guys in best buy mobile and they claimed it was verizon that was locking down the boot loaders. Of course these are the same guys who were shocked when I told them I had a OC nook color w/ froyo and honeycomb.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

Also praying for no locked bootloader. Hoping to be rooted within the first few days
All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

Couldn't resist the offer for a free upgrade to the Charge and 4G was just switched on this week in my area, so it was a sign.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone, devs and anyone else who helped make this device much nicer. The Fascinate was a great phone and I thank all of the devs. Without them, it would've sucked and I never would have gotten one. But it was time to move on to a dual core beast. And man, did I miss the reception, call quality, and build quality of a Moto phone.
Should get my Charge today. Been on a stock build for about two days and its horrible. Really makes you appreciate all the work you guys have done.
I too will be receiving my charge today I believe. Its been an enjoyable 5 months flashing this phone but time to move on.

Er, duh. I understand that nitsuj. I have the issues I mentioned in my previous reply. I didn't actually believe that vzw would go so far as to send out better devices to compensate for, what I thought are, "acceptable issues". If vzw considers that to be a valid excuse to send me a new device, count me in. Like I said, I've got another year with this phone. I can't afford to miss calls from my wife who is at home with our special needs child, or the facilities that I manage.

On my 2nd Shift and I am done.

After my last post about needing to run to stock to get my phone fixed, sprint took their time to send me a replacement, might I add my mother has an evo 3D and 2 days before mine broke her's did the same. I got a replacement yesterday finally after being told it was sent more than a week ago (I live in florida so that's illogical)
My replacement is now having the same exact issues of flickering, half touch screen not working and random dead spots on the digitizer for the half that does work.
I am simply done with HTC, I was told that due to the issues I had with them hanging up on me, dropping me after saying I was on hold and having my replacement take 2 weeks to get to me after being told it was shipped on the day I went in only for it to have been shipped few days ago from me receiving it, I may be either switching from sprint. He did put a flag and ticket up for me on my issues though, he seemed to be the only tech that cared. He said I should now be able to get a new phone entirely, so I may just switch to the samsung epic, it's old but It's better than this ****.
Sorry but I needed to vent about this crap, thought some of you might have gone through the same, I am just starting college again and this was not the time to be dealing with this crap.
That sucks, I've never had any issues with HTC myself. Had a HTC G1 before this and it's still working even with a half cracked screen. Every phone is going to have some defective ones made. I've known a lot of people with Samsung that also get defective phones. Sorry you had a bad experience though.

My cousin and friend have the epic and I really liked it, they didn't have any issues with it since the gb update, but if I do get the NS4G I will take it, just don't like not having a keyboard even though I barely used it on my shift. The possibility of me getting another shift is high also but I am going to complain til I get a new phone, 3 phones with same issues is bull.
It's not a problem with the shift that I've seen very frequently. I've gone through 4 shifts. I say you should give the Shift another chance. It's the best phone Sprint has short of a nexus prime and if you're like me, you don't want a nexus prime because there's no keyboard.
edit/note: Make sure you try and get a Sprint store rep to send you a REPLACEMENT rather than going through asurion. Make sure you express your extreme dissatisfaction, time lost, and the fact that you are considering cancelling your account. This is the biggest thing that is hurting Sprint right now, customer retention, so I'm pretty sure that would help. If it doesn't go to another Sprint store, call Sprint customer service, ask for a supervisor, and express your extreme dissatisfaction with the service you received at that store.
That is what I plan to do, guy on the phone said I can ask for a replacement fine due to all the flags on my account from the last week.

Cool. From what I've heard getting a replacement phone is almost as good as getting a brand new phone.
If you have issues with the 2nd phone and you have asurion take both phones in to the Sprint store and they can swap bad parts for good parts. Just call Sprint customer service ahead of time and tell them to schedule an appointment for you.
I already sent in my original and I got this replacement here and more parts of my digitizer are slowly not working, I have just enough response to answer calls.

Get 1 more replacement. Trust me I had to go through 3 to get a good shift. Also make sure you hack it up and see how far you can overclock it. If you can get past 1.6ghz you've got a good cut of the wafer CPU.
Both my original and this replacement could do 2.0ghz and be just fine, it's the screen that kept giving out, my flex ribbon in my first broke while I took a nap then this phone's digitizer took a dive right after activating it, then it worked fine, put a screen protector on it. To which it stopped working, then wouldn't work without the protector on now wont work at all.

Yeah I found a place here that will put the screen protector on perfectly here, you should be able to find one in the mall once you get a good working Shift.
I really don't want those kids touching my phone....

The more i think about it the more i dont really care.
Honestly, i dont do much with my phone because im stingy with my battery life and ram lol
I honestly dont know why i want a more powerful phone, so I'm just gonna give my shift a good use until its time to upgrade or use my insurance.
If i get offered a nexus though, im taking it.
Not willing to ditch this guy yet, I didnt think I was gonna need/like the slideout keyboard, but now I love it lol

The Shift is obviously not the best phone Sprint has. Don't be a schmuck, get the Nexus.

Maybe... maybe straight hardware wise... but if you're looking for a phone with a good amount of development I think you'll be disappointed with it. Same goes for the E3D and the Design. If I were getting a new phone I'd wait until the Galaxy Nexus is released. There may be phones with better hardware but hardware is kinda like benchmarks - good for comparing your e-penis but doesn't necessarily determine how the actual user experience is. The pure Nexus experience really is nice and the Galaxy Nexus will have a lot of great development for a long time to come. Personally I'm really pleased with my Nexus S and don't think I'll grow tired of it before my next upgrade in 10 months.

Can't find it right now, but I'm pretty sure I saw a comparison (maybe phonedog?) of the Galaxy Nexus vs e4gt and nexus was REALLY laggy going from portrait to landscape compared to e4gt. Of course it was stock vs. stock . . .
Seems to me that development for the shift is great. Seems like e4gt is a really popular phone, hmmm .. . - is development worse because of something intrinsic to the phone?
I have owned my Shift since the day it came out. My friend has one and so does my brother. All working, no problems what's so ever. I love this little guy and I'm sorry you were having bad luck with faulty hardware.
My dad has a Samsung Epic no problems I guess.
I really want ICS but like the physical keyboard to get the Nexus.

One more update then - LAWYER UP!! Class Action....

I am willing to pursue a class action lawsuit on behalf of all of us who were sold defective Nexus 7 (2013) tablet's and have useless touchscreens.
I am giving them one more chance with an update to repair the problem and then I'm taking it to my company's lawyer.
I have sent it in once, they told me they "re-calibrated the screen and digitizer"......no improvement.
Still having sticky keys, phantom touches, long presses.....It is absolutely a useless tablet as I can't type like I normally can.
If you would like to pursue litigation, please join me.
GOOGLE, YOU HAVE ONE MORE CHANCE!! MAKE THIS RIGHT OR WE WILL END UP IN COURT - GUARANTEED.
Its no worse then what we saw (actually far better) with the Xoom timing out touch events after 15 seconds.
Don't get me wrong... It is certainly annoying... I'm just not certain that it meets the criteria for the type of litigation you are suggesting.

Has Google refused to remedy your problem, either with a new tablet or an update? It's not as if the entire product line is defective - far from it. As with anything that's manufactured, there will be some items that fall below standard. I doubt you have the right to sue over this. I understand you're pissed but a CAL isn't going to happen.
Let us know what your lawyer says. I'd be surprised if you found one willing to take the case.

It's MY company's lawyer...
He doesn't have a choice....LOL.
....Are you guys really willing to be robbed from and then let them get away with??
As a business owner myself, I know how I would handle it if I wished to preserve my reputation.
We'll see, but having to resort to an older tablet to send emails is unacceptable.
I may simply demand a refund and go buy a Samsung......
If nobody else wants to get onboard....
I can't understand why you wouldn't but I'll get my money back and move on....

Good luck with that. Unless you have multiple warranty replacements, they'd probably just laugh at you.

If the entire product line was defective and Google refused to remedy the situation, then a CAL could be justified. Have you exhausted all avenues of approach yet? Demanded a refund? A new tablet? Those are your best options at the moment. I personally don't have a problem with my N7.

I demanded a refund just now from Google. Less than a month old - NOPE.
I was put in contact with ASUS. They want me to send it in and I have to pay the shipping.
Ridiculous. I'm going to buy a Samsung right now and sell this POS.
As if Sammy is any better... Good luck with bloatwiz...

Google's return policy is 15 days after the date of delivery, You missed out on the chance of getting a replacement or a refund.
Your best shot now is contact ASUS again and demand they pay for the shipping for a defective item, try to demand talking to a manager might help.
Am sure if we get Andy Dufresne involved he will fix it for us for a few cold beers each on the rooftop of asus factory for the defected units

Regarding the CAL, if you missed the return/refund window for Google you can't really get anything from CAL.

+1 Someone say his Nexus isn't working properly and that is willing to take action, then the thread suddenly floods with people with "perfect" Nexus, and saying it's not a big deal.
If you don't have any problem with your Nexus, hooray! good for you, a lot of us do have problems.
PS: I was the owner of a Note 8, 0 problems, I though, well I had the Nexus 7(2012) and it worked fine, plus is pure android. So I jumped to this Nexus for the screen and pure android... now I'm starting to regret it, just know my keyboard started with the ghost touches, is incredibly annoying...
Let me say something. This guy is right we are getting the shaft. I been building computers and a tech for 20 yrs. I have had every top of the line tablet out there. I still love my IPAD 4.
I have bought 7 Nexus 7 2013 from 3 different places and the seventh still is messed up. Now you are going to say that is normal. Bullcrap.
Out of all of the top of the line tablets I have I never had to take them back and replace them. Once would be fine but 7 and still not working is not freakin right.
I have had the Asus TF101, Asus TF300, Asus TF700, Samsung GALAXY Tab 1, Galaxy tab 8.0, Toshiba Thrive, Toshiba Excite, HP touch pad and more never had a screen problem like this. I have a I7 3700K overclocked on air at 4.7ghz evo 212 cpu fan.
You should never have to replace more than 2 times to get something right, I would have to say that their product line is 85% bad on the Nexus 7 2013.
