Is Multitasking Really This Slow? - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Check out the video on verge review, the multitasking is horribly slow and painful to watch. Can someone verify the performance of multitasking?
http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/15/3243546/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review

I also wanted to check with people who has the Note 10.1 if the device is actually so slow.
Verge video: http://youtu.be/sNkKc81Ug34?t=2m50s
Start at 2:50 to check how much it lags. Can someone try the same in his note and reply.
cheers!

I just tried exactly what you see in the youtube video.
Yes, there is a little little Lag, but not as horrible as it was shown there.
There was a little system update, the first time i started my Note. Maybe this fixed it.

It's lag in the sense that it takes a second initially for what you've written to be displayed. It captures what you're doing immediately the lag is in having it appear. There's some bugs in the s/w because there's a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes that's never been implemented before. Hopefully Samsung cleans them up with updates.
The Verge was pretty tough on the Note. TW is a love/hate proposition and if you hate it you really should skip the Note completely. It's what's tying everything together so you'll lose multi-view and other features if you run a vanilla ROM. I do disagree with their conclusion that's it's a Tab 2 with a pen. It's nothing like the original G-Tab in performance, the display, version of TW, materials, or feel in the hand. I have them side-by-side and you really notice a difference (for the better). Bottom line is if you're not in to the benefits of multi-view or the S-Pen and just want to use the Note like a typical Android tablet it may not be the best choice. Especially at a starting price of $499.

More like a millisec in lag.

You know, those guys of the Verge did some kind of silly gestures and they did it so fast... I don't think anybody will do that kind of stuff in a regular use...

They drew squiggles and tried scrolling the browser up and down. If that's too extreme for the Note, then that's pretty sad.

Jellybean will fix all that and make it smooth like butter.

Verge is basically an apple fellatio shop. I think they'd lose half their audience if they had a bad review of an apple product or a good review of any apple competitors.
For example:
Galaxy S3 = 8.5
iPad = 9.3
One X = 8.4
Macbook Air: 8.8
Thinkpad X1 carbon: 7.5

Can you write on one side (using SPen) and scroll a web page on the other side (with a finger), in the same time?
Thx.

Yes and no. It is true that when having applications side by side the context switch takes a moment. But it doesn't feel like the tablet can't keep up. In fact if you use a floating S-Note window there's none of this lag. Even if you have several floating windows plus a floating video plus two applications side by side the tablet is still totally responsive. There seems to be plenty of horsepower, so it's unclear why there is this delay with side by side context switch.

I agree with this. Playing a 1080P MKV video in Pop up play and resizing it and moving it around the screen causes absolutely no lag or stuttering. I'm guessing (hoping) that any lag that's happening in side-by-side views will be corrected via updates. It's certainly not the h/w (CPU and/or RAM) that's causing it.

Yes and no again. Only one window receives input at a given time. However, both applications do run simultaneously. E.g. if you have flash video running in the browser window and you switch to the note window the flash video will continue playing without stuttering when you scribble in the note window. There is a blue line at the bottom of the window that currently receives input.
BTW the verge guy also missed the fact that the keyboard can indeed be switched to handwriting (or voice)

I hope so, but if there's one thing I've learned about mobile devices over the last couple of years, it's this: **Never buy a device on the promise of future software updates.**

Very true. Never get a product thinking about future upgrades. I wonder how XDA devs would make use of the S-Pen in their customer roms.

Samsung promised today, at the NYC conference, that n8000 will recive JB.

I wanted to get the tablet, but I am not very sure now.
I will probably wait for 2nd version as I think it could have been much better. I don't want 7-inchers like Nexus7 which basically is just a e-reader with Tegra3. I think they couldn't optimize the software yet. And A15 SoCs like Exynos 5 is very near, I think it would be foolish to spend on even a quad core A9. Very much interested on the new midgard T604 GPU.
I am also pissed about some of their product design philosophy:
1. Why replace the default mail client?
2. PCWorld mentioned that you can't attach anything in outgoing gmail messages. The only attachment option there is for the Gallery, which means that you can't take notes (or create a document in the Polaris Office app) and then send it via your Gmail account anywhere else. What kind of screwed-up policy is that?
3. S Planner instead of default calendar. When google already creates something for you, why change it when you can't make it better? You waste time and money to develop something which is worse than the free app you receive from google? What sort of product managers approve such thing?
4. Those icons that Samsung uses look so cartoonish now. It's been a long time now, I think we deserve a change in basic layout. They should bring something fresh, it's just so stale. I am not going to compare to Sense 4/4.1 as it's a totally different discussion.
5. Why have so many useless widgets when I see it is causing a lag. There is obvious drop is framerate when there are many widgets in the homescreen.
6. Display resolution is not on my top priority, but would be for many other people.
7. Someone drop that fuc^^ng blip-blip sound. I know we should be able to disable it. My point is why have something which is irritating for many people.
Don't Samsung take feedback from users or from forums? Ok, so you want to skin the device and differentiate it, fine. We can get the idea behind having their own identity and their own apps. But what is the point to use inferior choice when you have something clearly better available for free? You don't want to use stock. Ok, good. then make something more refined. I was so excited about the S-Pen. It looks good, S-Note also looks very decent. But some other things don't look so promising.
/big rant

On the Engadget review
Mutlitasking seems fast. and they taxed the processor with a lot of windows open.
the verge is very biased site. If it is not an apple product forget it.
even when the theverge authors were at engadget same ****, they were biased.
even slashgear multitasking is way way faster than theverge

Xoom in Hand (My quick review), ask me anything you want to know

Display - Pretty good but not nearly as great as the iPad's.. nor is it as bright as the iPad. Pixel density looks A LOT like the iPad.. I can't really say the Xoom is any sharper than the iPad.. Whites look much better on the iPad.. they definately have a much higher color gamut and contrast ratio on the iPad. This is disappointing considering how much the Xoom costs off-contract. The Xoom screen looks nearly identical to what Samsung uses on their Galaxy Tab 7". Viewing angles are "decent" but again, not as good as iPad. I would say they are using a cheap PVA type panel, not IPS on this unit. PVA is still much better than TN at least.
Weight - Same weight as iPad.. so to me, it feels too heavy for it's size... but I think the Xoom is much easier to hang onto/hold because of it's widescreen nature'd body.
Speed - Depending on apps I guess.. or how optimized they are.. Angry Birds Seasons (the tablet version) runs like crap compared to Angry Birds on my Galaxy Tab.. not sure why.. Web browsing is a real treat.. Definately renders web sites faster than the iPad.. content is ready to explore at a much faster pace.. However, scrolling isn't as nice as it is on the iPad.. I don't know why Android can't get scrolling anywhere near iOS's Safari. Scrolling is choppy and clunky depending on how many pictures are needed to be shown on the screen at one time. Quadrant scores LOWER than my Galaxy Tab.. Could be Quadrant's not optimized well enough for the Tegra2 platform.
Battery Life - I will have to edit this in later.. my Xoom came out of the box with 77% life..
Interface/UI - I actually like Honeycombs UI.. the quick-softkeys are delightful to use.. especially to multitask with.. Flying between apps is instantaneous and snappy.. much faster than iPad's multitasking.
Speakers - Horrible placement.. they project all sound away from you being on the rear of the device when you're holding the Xoom.. so everybody else hears MORE than what you're hearing.. Otherwise they sound pretty good.. I would say as good as iPad.. and even louder.
Data Connectivity - Verizon 3g on the Xoom FLIES.. I've gotten over 2mb down and over 1mb up.. the modem chip inside the Xoom must be pretty exceptional.. my Galaxy S phone (also on Verizon) barely gets over 1mb down and about 600-700kbps up. Wifi on the other hand seems weak.. my connection is constantly dropping to my home's Wifi connection.. and the Wifi router is just 1 room away :/
Interesting Tid-Bits
The built-in "Chrome" Browser is GPU accelerated.. resulting in much smoother/faster rendering/scrolling.. When installing a 3rd party Browser like Dolphin HD, the web browsing experience plummets, which reminds you of your first Android powered phone and browser.. slow rendering and horrible, choppy scrolling. So with this said, if an app isn't taking advantage of the Tegra2 SOC, don't expect much performance.. this probably also explains the crappy framerates you get when running Quadrant.
I'll post more later.. going back to playing with the Xoom.

Thanks buddy, I appreciate it. So far i'm imperssed, honestly. I think it's a solid device. Worth 800 bucks? Probably not, but over 18 months, what the hell, I can afford to be an early adopter. I may invest in an anti glare screen. I can't tell if it's so nice looking that its glassy, or so poorly implemented that its a glare magnent, lol.
Either way, i'm happy with my investment, and I really hope google puts a lot of attention to fixing bugs and any other issues with Honeycomb.

I can agree with that, I don't know.. It doesn't outweigh the pros as of yet. The main thing that i'm eager to test at this point is the Battery, and some of the dual core optimized games and what not. What about you? Are you looking for anything in particular? Any other experience you can comment on? So far, by the way, tethering to my droid x is working phenomenally.

What I'm really looking for is a Tablet with an alternative OS (anything not Windows) with great battery life and gives me the tools to be as productive as a netbook.. Far reaching goals im sure though.
Does honeycomb have an easy way for selecting in the middle of sentences / words? I know the IPad has a magnify glass come up when you hold your finger near a word so that you can see exactly where the cursor is, does honeycomb do something similar? Also, how is the copy/paste in honeycomb? I know on my 2.3 phone, it's not that great and hard to select exactly what you want.
you able to find google body app... cant find it on market and it's not preinstalled???
Can you try viewing streaming websites on WiFi (justin.tv or ustream.tv) and see how the tablet handles higher quality streams?

I have no experience with Android 2.3.. but there seems to be a pretty nice/decent cut and paste built in.. I haven't used it yet.
I have had an iPad since july of last year, sold it yesterday in prepartion for the Xoom purchase today. Walked into Verizon purchased the Xoom and walked right out no hassle, no activation required. Here my Mini Review so far, with some comparisons to my previous 32gb ipad.
Hardware:
Nice heft, feels really solid and has that industrial feel. I do not feel I am going to drop it because it slips out of my hand... i always felt that way when holding an ipad.
its a 16:10 screen so it is wider than it is long. Should be perfect for movies.
Screen is a finger print magnet like ipad.
Software:
Gmail- is incredible on this thing. Drag and drop, color labels, etc. the workflow with gmail is priceless and so fluid. I cannot speak of the general "email" app because i only use gmail.
youtube- way way faster loading videos on this than it was on the ipad. it has some eye candy, which is always nice.. esp for android.
browser- Browser is great! and it loads pages faster than my ipad did. also it has tabs and THEY DO NOT RELOAD ON SWITCHING!! I had 8 tabs open... flipping through them flawlessly! As always using google account you can sync bookmarks and such between desktop and xoom.
Havent tried the music app yet
The gallery is like your standard vanilla android gallery.. loaded all my picasa pics from the cloud.
Other apps- there are very few "tablet apps" in the market. The 2 I did DL was pulse and accuweather. Pulse was pretty basic but did take advantage of the fragments. Accuweather is slick... but they need to polish up some pixelation i saw tapping the background "live" water.
Apps like facebook and kindle scale up nicely. While some apps dont like the speedtest app.
Speaking of speed test, i did a load on my wifi connection at 15mbps down and 3 up and i pull 14mbps down and 2 up. My ipad could never pull above 10mbps. I also noticed my signal holding strong than it did on my ipad.
Workflow is great!! This is what i have been missing on ipad... background task, unintrustive notifications.
Thats all I have right now... so far I am liking the decision i made. But i know i will be missing my apps the ipad had!!! Android cant match it yet... it will take some time.
If Xoom battery life is anything like G Tablets (Also Tegra 2) it should have pretty damn good battery Life

samsung galaxy 10.1 major disappointment

I have owned the samsung galaxy 10.1 for approx 2 weeks. I sold my IPAD 2 to purchase as I have always been a fan of android phones. So far, I find the galaxy to be very unpolished. For example, the screens lag when navigating and apps force close to much. When I scroll up and down on the UI, its not smooth as butter like the IPAD. When I change the screen orientation, its very choppy. The IPAD runs circles around this device. I wish it wasnt the case as I wanted to like it. Even the on screen keyboard is hard to type on. Try copying and pasting a sentence. The arrows you use to drag across the words never line up with what is being clicked. I am not sure how anybody finds this device to be a pleasant experience unless you are in denial and I am not talking about the river. Maybe Ice Cream will fix some of the issues. For now, the tablet serves as a perfect example of what happens when technology is rushed to the market without consideration of quality.
I feel better now.

Not sure if you are trolling here, but eh, I'm bored so I'll bite.
Those of us who find the Tab to be a pleasant experience must be in denial huh? Don't you think that's a pretty presumptuous and arrogant statement? How do you know what my experience with it has been? Or anyone else's for that matter?
I would usually sit here and try to help you solve your lagginess issue, maybe seeing if you have some sort of rouge process going on or if you are even on the latest firmware. Maybe point you to some of the great custom ROMs the developers here have given us. But, nope. You speak for everyone and everyone must be having the same ****ty experience as you, and if we say we don't we must be lying.
I will tell you though that my experience has been fantastic. The only time I get lag on the homescreen is when I have a live wallpaper up. I've never had any browser lag or lag anywhere else. I have a ton of widgets on my screens too. No lag. Of course though I'm totally lying, but you knew that already right?
I'm finished being sarcastic. Honestly if you aren't happy with the device, go sell it and get an Ipad again. Nobody is stopping you. The Tab is a fantastic product and I would go so far as to say it is the best tablet on the market as of this very moment. But it is not for everybody, especially for people who have no idea what they are doing.
Posting threads like this serves no purpose other than being a troll and drawing the ire of members like myself.

I bought mine a couple weeks back too, and my experiences are similar to yours. I still can't understand how a dual core device can be this laggy! I'm hoping its all due to the Samsung bloatware, so I'm going to load up a custom ROM over the weekend and see how that goes... you should try it too
I really like the additional screen space coming from a 4.2" Xperia Arc, and Honeycomb is a lot zippier now than it was back in April when I had the Xoom for a couple of weeks. I still believe its a better tablet than the iPad2 though. That thing seems so zippy because all it is is a magnified iPhone. There's almost nothing running in the background which gives it the appearance of being a lot quicker and better battery life. Load it up with widgets and lets compare them then.
My biggest problem though, is the lack of a good pdf app. I've tried tons of them and they are all really slow to load, very jerky pinch to zoom, and slow scrolling. Hope this improves with ICS
And to the poster above this, I don't get why you even bothered posting if you're going to be so incredibly unhelpful

Lance,
I have watched my brother in law's ipad closely, and you are right. It is faster and more responsive (once tweaked) than my SGT was out of the box. However, the others are right too.
I have rooted and tweaked my SGT and it now makes my ios friends raise their eyebrows. You happily partied all over your ipad, making many changes suggested on user sites like this one. Now you need to do the same with your SGT. If you are unable or unwilling to do that, you are not an idiot or a molester of small animals, you are just one of those people that the ipad was designed for. So get another one, and enjoy it.
I prefer my Android gadgets, because they are more flexible. I am not locked into iTunes, and I have access to my 650GB music library that is not as compressed as AAC. I have a FREE SDK that works rather well, when i want to write my own apps. There are a few paid apps that I depend upon for day to day stuff, just like I would for iOs devices. For me, and many of the others in this form, that is what they want.
Sent from a distant planet with the aid of my towel.

I understand how you feel, and I felt the same way when I first handled the SGT 8.9 the UI lag was horrendous .. I felt the product manager of the device should be sacked (or worse done to him) for ever allowing such a device out the door in such state. To make matters worse for me, there was an ipad close by and the UI flow was like watching man utd beat arsenal 8-2 .. I promptly returned the device.
However my opinion has since change since coming here lots of people have filled me in with some tweaks and work around which resolves most of the laggy issue. (You can check out the SGT 8.9 Q & A section its a sticky under this section for people experience with the device)
First of if you can't be bothered to root your device, try the ADW launcher ex, everyone who tried that said its greatly improves the performance and eliminates the lag issue.
You can also if you are feeling adventurous root the device. And install some of the numerous roms around.
just try and take advantage of the open nature and make it yours. Soon ipad owners would be looking at your tab and feeling the envy.
Just my 2 cents

Please go get your ipad back dude. I have none of the issues you speak of. This thread is a total waste. I don't even believe you own a tab.
By saying "you like Android phones" I'm assuming you mean in comparison to the iPhone. Most of the same issues you’re experiencing in an Android vs. iPad tablet comparison apply to a phone comparison also so your statement's kind of confusing.
iOS is so "buttery smooth" because it's locked down like a prison with Apple exerting Orwellian control over the entire eco-system. I bought my G-Tab and paid more than an equivalent iPad because, for what I do, the collection of individual apps works better than the homogenous equivalents on the iPad. And I did that knowing the iPad had a better display and that the UI and navigation were smoother and more mature.
This forum is fascinating because of the disparity in experiences everyone has. I've had two G-Tab's (Wi-Fi and 3G) and never had a force close on either and I have over 50 apps installed. There's occasional stutter and lagginess but I'd say it appears (for me) less than 5% of the time. One huge difference between iOS and Android is that Android, with its limitless ability to be tweaked, can get hosed by people using badly written apps and the use of memory managers, task killers, battery monitors and the like. Every XDA forum I participate in has people *****ing about some function being hosed and then go on to elaborate about all the crap they've done to their device and ****ty low-rent apps they're using. And they don’t understand why their phone’s getting crappy battery life and has tons of issues no one else seems to be experiencing. I guess freedom comes at a price and it can be abused.
I've had a G-Tab in one form or another since August and have been really satisfied with it. I took my new 3G version on a trip over the weekend and it performed flawlessly and got fantastic battery life with 3G active continuously and download speeds of 8MB in TX (vs. less than 1MB for an iPad). I sat across from someone using an iPad on the flight home last night. The local video he was playing was gorgeous. Compared to mine, his WSJ app looked like crap as did Solitaire and a bunch of other stuff I saw him use. Meanwhile, I was streaming Hulu, HBOGO, and TV shows from my home server using the planes Wi-Fi. I can also play music I have stored on my home server, the Amazon cloud, or from the 2K songs I store locally using my $9.99 Rhapsody monthly subscription. All while reading magazines and newspapers using Next Issue and Press Reader. I’d gladly trade options and versatility for “buttery smooth” any day. iOS is great for a subset of device owners because of its constraints and consistency. But those restrictions are why I chose Android. Android can become smoother through s/w and h/w evolution but iOS will never become more open. Hopefully OP bought his G-Tab somewhere with a liberal return policy so he can return it.

The stuff you speak of is why I have ran Linux exclusively on my PC for close to 5 years now. Yet I think the OP has a point and was just letting out steam. I too was extremely disappointed when I handled the galaxy tab (in my case it was the 8.9) right from boot the experience was horrendous and the UI lagged SOO much it was embarrassing. This first impression was a real turn off for me and I can understand the feeling of someone who gets a device with such awesome hardware only be bugged down with software. Sure you can always improve with tweaks and mods but if android is ever gonna replicate its success on mobile on tablets. Then the out of the box experience most be killer. Having and awesome out of the box experience and ability to further tweak should not be mutually exclusive. The experience I got on my galaxy s2 even with default rom was exquisite. Just breath taking. Even without Modding or installing a custom rom. That's what I expected from honeycomb. Hopefully most of this out of the box issues would be fixed with honeycomb 3.2 and ICS.

I must agree with OP. Its a f****g ambaresment how a product can be released in the state it was when it was in the box. Now after tweaking and rooting and flashing and using it for a couple of months its useable. But it still lags, not all the time , but try installing something form market and then go to homescreen, right then its laggy as hell.
But we all know this by now, so i agree with the rest of you that we have no need for this thread. And if OP just read a little before buying he would have found this info about the tab. Anyways welcome hope you get your tab sorted.

Same experience here.... I've even rooted my tab and it did improve but not as much as I would of liked, this was a month ago though, so i don't know if anything better has comed out. I've thought about getting an iPad but..... I just can't if it can't play flash.... How the hell could you own a tablet and not watch a simple flash video. So if anyone can give me advice on how to make my 10.1 as smooth as some of you have said, then please do tell me how. I love my Gtab but the lag does really bother me enough to have had to remove all my widgets....

Root your tab is only the first step. You need to flash custom rom after you root your tab, then only you can feel the difference.
I just got my tab last week, wifi only version. I can say I'm really satisfied with the performance and I love my tab. The basic steps are:
1. root your tab
2. flash custom rom
That's all you need to do to feel the difference. You can ignore some of the gimmicks, for instance supercharger, overclock kernel and etc that have been mentioned if you have no freaking idea what they are about at the moment. You will pick them up along the way just like I did.
The one tip that everyone here would tell you - READ THE FORUM!
For instance, the first sticky post in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android Development is a good read and good resource to get you started. Here's the link if you have no idea where it is (Seriously?): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171089

I agree with you on most counts, except that I don't have any issues with the onscreen keyboard and don't get force closes. There are some things you can do to improve the user experience (alternate launchers, overclocking etc), however it still won't feel like the iPad.
That being said, there are things you can do with the tablet out of the box which you can't do with an iPad:
- Adobe Flash support
- Emulation apps availability (SNES, DOS, Scumm)
- File / Directory browsing
- UI customization
- Non-market / store applications installation
While I would love the overall UI performance to be on par with the iPad, given a choice between the two I would rather have the above functionality instead. There is also the possibility of Android's UI performance improving in the future with all this functionality retained. In case of Apple, apart from limited UI customization perhaps, the other stuff is just not going to be available ever.
PS: And all that's just out of the box, if you root your device there's some far more interesting stuff you can do with the tablet!

My biggest problem though, is the lack of a good pdf app. I've tried tons of them and they are all really slow to load, very jerky pinch to zoom, and slow scrolling. Hope this improves with ICS

You have probably tried it already, but EZ PDF is pretty good. I am comparing it to GoodReader on the iPad and I don't have any issues with loading / scrolling / flipping / resizing.
Of course, this maybe dependent on the size and content of the PDFs you are using, so YMMV -- I mostly read book-sized documents, mostly text, and it works fine for me.
I recently bought a GalaxyTab and I have to confirm, it is quite laggy - In comparison to an iPad.
There are several things which can drastically improve the situation:
Use ADW Launcher EX
Custom ROM, Like Task650/Phantom Extreme Stock
Overclock (although, this didn't change a lot)
I found that the first two points are the most important. ADW Launcher makes the whole Homescreen and Applauncher absolutely smooth, just like on an iPad. And no, the stock launcher isn't.
It's great how many possibilites we have with Android, but be honest - I'd rather have ICS without any new features, but just great performance increases. Thats why I switched to Windows Phone in the first place - I don't want apple, but I want smooth scrolling, smooth transitions. And now, just because Android has much more possibilites doesn't mean it has the right to be slow and choppy. Take a look at the Windows 8 Developer Preview. My god, this isn't even an ALPHA and boy it's SO SMOOTH, I cried almost when I saw that.
The only reason I bought my Galaxy Tab is, that Microsoft still needs about a year until their first tablets are out - And I hate waiting
So please Google, get your Team together and tell them to START OPTIMIZING.
PS:
ezPDF is quite good - But the UI is horrible, and I miss the feature to insert Pages into a PDF. Mandano seems a lot more polished and faster, but misses a lot of annotation features.
I agree with the original poster. My tab is rooted, custom rom, adw, etc. My wife's ipad is a far smoother experience than this tablet. Would I switch back to the ipad prison? Not in a million years. My tablet does so much more than the ipad. If an example is needed, how about my choice of swype or thumb keyboard.
root your tab and wait for an ICS port... ICS is said to have hardware acceleration. That is the only thing Honeycomb lacks and that is why its not as smooth as the iPad...
OR
Flash a custom ROM such as Overcome 1.2.1 (didnt like 1.2.2 or 1.2.3) or w/e other one suits you and then come back edit the OP with the overall news... don't judge this book by its cover and remember its NOT iOS
A newbie when rooting is involved but i was wondering if you could give me an idea of what tweaks you have made? i'm considering rooting my device but unsure of what i could do to make it better.

Flashing a custom ROM is the big one, will make a huge difference. I am using Task650 & Phantom's "In Paris V4". I also installed pershoot's kernel and overclocked.
The experience
I love my Galaxy Tab in comparison to my previously owned iPad but the reason is simply because I like playing with roms and hacking to get the most of my device. On my iPad, I felt too restricted and forced to use software I didn't like. Yes, some of the apps are better on the iPad and yes, the interface is a bit smoother but it's nowhere near as attractive and it's far too limiting.
A friend of mine equated the iPad experience with being put in a padded room where he can't hurt himself and everything if fluffy and safe feeling. It made me laugh but somewhat sums up the experience. Personally, I'd rather not be spoon fed the experience but would rather create my own and make it about me.
My hope is that ICS will be a significant jump. realistically, Android tablet manufacturers should be trolling these forums for employees who can tweak up their software.. Why they don't do this, one will never know.
Either way, I don't think attacks on the Op are warranted. These forums are here for people to both vent and discuss like the adults we are.

Yes, we get that. But I think the point the OP was hammering home was the fact that the Note is in its prime when it comes to handling multitasking....whereas other devices with different architecture/screen/resolution might not do that great of a job.

The only (that I can think of) in regards to why we don't have this level of multitasking would be because of **Battery Life**

i wouldn't say that at all. if people can be productive on their iPhones, and our screen is 2.5x larger, having the ability to split screen has tremendous potential.
it would be fantastic to say, web browse on one side and take notes on the other, or sms info to others. one big problem with this, in my quick testing, is that the keyboard is just way too big.
ive been saying for ages, we need a keyboard where you can select what percent of screen width to use, much like samsungs one handed keyboard

Really practical. The very day you could see the real multitasking on your device you would love it to the point of answering yourself how in the hell has been able to survive on your life until these moment. Because it not consist on wacht a random number of videos at the same time but on to be able to swype onto a random number of task on different points of progress without closing.
OTOH, the N900 screen is 3,5" and performs multitasking really nice.

Multi-window?

10 inch is great for multi-window multitasking especially considering the lack of tablet optimized Android apps. But is it available on the Nexus 10 out of box considering Samsung's own Note 10.1 does split-screen, if not can it be upgraded with no root or in any other way?
Could be a dealbreaker. The 2,56k Nexus 10 is perfect for multitasking and lacking such awesomeness would be disappointing.
Something like Galaxy Note? It would be great but no mention of it in the reviews.

It's unlikely. The thing with nexus devices is that you need to forget who manufactured it.
Unless the standard android build tree implements a multi windows feature, no nexus device will have it.
It's a trade off, because devices like my S3 and the Note etc come with fantastic Samsung features like the notes app, multi window, smart stay, additional code licences and such, but you sacrifice update frequency.
The point here is that this device gets pure, unadulterated, Android, and all the features (or lack thereof) that comes with it.
Either way, ill be buying one, and waiting for ParanoidAndroid to come along so I can get rid of the crappy Phablet UI, which I personally think is a mistake on a device like this.

That's too bad. The crowd clearly wants multitasking and the 10" screen and high resolution is fitting for split screen, a big hit and miss by Google. Or maybe Samsung wants to keep it in house? Disappointing either way, splitting the screen into 4:3 for Chrome and 1:3 for Twitter/chat/music/calculator/notepad etc. would give enough pixels for both. To not have that option on most tablets is kinda shocking. What else do you wish to use the big screen for if not comfort?
I'm on GB on my phone. Is there a simple way to switch between apps on JB?

Yeh, the problem, is that Samsung's multi-window feature is just that, Samsung's. They paid and spent the time to develop it in house, it's their own functionality, it cost them time and effort and is a selling point for their own devices such as the Galaxy Note 2.
As for JB, there is the "recent" menu, which is usually surfaced as an on screen button on some devices, or a press and hold of home on others, for switching apps. It's really no different to that of GB, except that it gives thumbnails of the apps instead of just icons.
Samsung cheated their way to multi-screen view... only one app is in the foreground, so it's not really multi-tasking. They did a serious hack job of the android os in order to make it happen. If you want it done right, wait for Google to do it.

Yeah, but this is a Samsung tab, and as much as it runs "pure Android", they could've easily throw multi-view in and sell it with that feature, it's pretty evident THIS is the device to challenge the iPad, not the Note 10.1.
It also doesn't take a genius at Google to develop split-screen tasking, don't think it requires too many resources either. HW's ready, SW's ready, we are ready. Where's split screen multitasking on the 10" tablets?

Mobo player let's you multi screen, when watching a video you can hit the home button and it will bring you to the desktop but have the video playing in a resizeable box... Was actually really nice ,made me want it on all the apps :'(
Sadly, I don't think Google wants multi window functionality in Android. In general, they seem fine with Android for tablets just being a dumb device for media consumption. I think the tablet UI change is an example of Google dumbing down the UI by wasting screen real estate, etc.
Additionally, A developer from Google threatened CyanogenMod when they showed interest in using and improving a 3rd party's implementation of multi window for ICS. Google is worried that supporting multi window will make it harder on app developers because there would be even more size and layout variations that developers would need to test and support.
I personally think it is very important for Google to support this. Windows 8 tablets already have support for multi window.
Back to my original point, a 7" fits Google's current direction of being mostly a dumb device for media consumption. However, 10" tablets needs to be something more than that to justify the price and lack of portability compared to a 7" tablet.
Damn, the new multi-view looks better than ever!

While I agree i dont like the UI on a nexus 7. For example isnt the native apps on a n7 single pane, like gmail on a phone?
On the nexus 10, gmail, talk, email, and the like are all 2 pane applications. My only complaint about the UI on the N10 is that the home back and multitask buttons allways stay in the middle of the screen. i think they should be to one side or the other for easier access with your thumb.
Also i would love to have multi window support on my n10 which is how i came opon this thread, but i will wait for google to implement it. while the different versions of android (touchwiz motoblur etc.) have come a long way none of them are as smooth or operate as clean as stock android. When and if google creates multi window support it will work flawlessly.
This is standard on the note 2 now right?

I have the att note 2 and I can watch a movie or video in a window while texting or whatever. You can move the video around on the screen too. Had it on my international i9300 too.

Updated software for 10.1 + 12.2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZP0Bos0plE
I noticed this video posted yesterday by GSMArena giving a quick review of the new Note 12.2 Pro. What struck me was that it doesn't appear to have the new UI and button layout that we have seen on other 12.2 Pros. This would strongly suggest to me that the new UI software update has been added as an after thought and should mean that we'll see it on our Note 10.1s.
There are other recent videos where people who have been sent review odules of the Note 12.2 don't have the new UI or the "Recent App" button... http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-NotePRO-12.2-Preview_id3537
I'm now really confused as to what Samsung are playing at. Have they released 2 versions of the Note 12.2 Pro? One which looks exactly like the 10.1 with updated software and another version which has a new button layout as well as new software? Or, are these review models "old" prototypes, that have been ditched in favour of the new design/software all together?
We might not see the magazine UI any time soon, actually.
*** To me it's a big plus since it was only "pretty" without much function. At least from what I saw throw CES footages. ( I do not need to see all these samsung widgets update with their push on their Samsung hub goodies.)
The the UI is refreshing, but we might see stuff that leans away from that of what we saw at CES.

Google doesn't seem to like the new Samsung stuff. However, I must say - the Samsung Touchwiz aesthetics are the next in line for the "worst looking interface", right behind iOS 7. It needs to update ASAP.

Join the club. The manual is what you need to go by and it has the new "recent apps" capacitive button in it.
It doesn't mention M-UX by name and instead introduces the concept of "Content home screens [M-UX]" and "Classic home screens [TW]. So it's possible that the sample in the GSMArena video was pre-production and the decision about moving from menu to recent apps for the capacitive button wasn't finalized yet. That sample also could have both Content and Classic home screens available but GSMArena set the home page to a Classic home screen.
Samsung should have introduced the recent tasks button on the N10.1-14, called it the Note|Pro 10.1, shipped it without M-UX, and then introduced a "Premium Suite" to bring it up to the level of the other 2014 premium tablets that were announced later. From the leak we appear to be getting 4-window Multi View and I'm assuming the rest of the updated Multi View features with it. So they'll either have to customize the N10.1-14 compared to the rest of the 2014-line to retain the menu button's function or damn the torpedoes and keep the existing icon and make it perform the "recent apps" function and hope existing users are capable of figuring it out.
Here's the Note|Pro 12's manual if you want to review it...

Then Lucy's going to have some 'splainin to do. The UK watchdogs and tribunals won't be thrilled that a feature Samsung's marketing on their e-commerce site was never intended to be offered. And in a reasonable time after it was added to the site thus influencing people's purchasing decisions.

This is what makes me think it even more likely the 10.1 will see the newer software too. If the 12.2 was originally made unning the exact same software as the 10.1, then there is no reason as to why the 10.1 wouldn't get it.

Yup! I just want it to come out now! Lol. And though I would love Magazine UX, the main reason I want it is the optimization of the software. Check the review below.

The review is of the exynos version, the reviewer is incorrect. If you notice on boot it says P900, that's the exynos version, also when he shows the right side there is no sim card slot. All wifi only (simless) versions are exynos.

Big thx for the links. But that magazine ui is pathetic in my opinion. It's just some square widgets for Samsung apps only and flipboard shortcuts. Zero added functionality or efficiency improvement over regular android home screens. There are way better tools to configure and customize your homescreen in the play store.
It's just another thing I'll disable/uninstall with titanium backup. Thx for nothing Samsung they should have put all that design and programming effort into refining and tuning their apps like s note etc. Samsung is making products that fit my needs very nice in terms of hardware and Android fits my needs in terms of software anyway. But on the software side Samsung is just throwing stuff at you. They never stick to anything. They release a new design and instead of improving it, they throw it away and start from scratch usually going into opposite directions. At least that's how it feels...
The Android launcher is amazing. And all the custom launchers in the play store make it even better. Stop trying to fix it Samsung. It ain't broken!
Looking forward to Bugfixes and performance update though.

Android sucks on displays over 7-8". As it is, Google's done nothing to help maximize the additional screen real estate and improve the user experience on large format devices. If fact, throwing a phone UI on a 10" tablet actually makes it worse. M-UX is Samsung's attempt at improving the Android tablet experience. Edge-to-edge widgets at least make better use of the display and size to increase the amount of info that can be shown on a single page and within a single widget. How well it works, how big an improvement it is, and whether it's a good or bad idea comes down to execution (both initially and over time). So to your point it could be a disaster or it could be great. I'll withhold judgment until I get to see how it works with the way I configure my tablets.
I can't think of a worse device for Android purists to buy than any Samsung Note-series. In edition to the normal Samsung gee-gaws it's got all the S Pen and advanced Multi View stuff piled on. KNOX now makes it worse because you place your warranty at risk to root and mod a Samsung device. People who don't like Samsung's s/w shouldn't buy Samsung devices and then complain after the fact. It's not like they didn't know what they were buying. It's like buying a diesel car and saying it's "awful" compared to a car with a conventional gas engine. This may be shocking but I like some of Samsung's s/w editions a lot more than some of their Google-native equivalents. There wouldn't be a Note-series if it were up to Google. So people should buy what makes them happy and if they're purists they definitely bought the wrong device if they're in this forum.

I agree with you on some points. Google indeed hasn't done anything to improve tablet experience. But for me there is enough customization available through the play store to change that.
I also agree with Samsung devices being bad choices for purists. I have a different idea about Android in general. When I choose a product I primarily look at the hardware but I want to be in charge of the software. That's why I could never buy an apple product. You're not happy with the soft keyboard? Go f*** yourself. i got this tablet because it has exactly the hardware I want. But in terms of software you have less and less freedom with Samsung... Some of their stuff is amazing some of their apps are just annoying and bad. And that is OK as long as you can get rid of them or replace! M-UX seems a step in a different direction with deep integration. As I said as long as I can delete/change it I don't care what they do.
So I agree, it's nice that Samsung is trying. But like this with only a handful of options for the widgets it's just a waste of time and resources. I used the magazine app a few times already. But it's just a launcher for flipboard. It doesn't add anything it only makes it look nice. And I always choose functionality over looks. That's just how I am

So far based on the media the worst case scenario is you have to have at least one M-UX page and the rest can be "classic." The M-UX page doesn't have to be set as "home" either. I'm still reserving judgment until I can play with it personally. I have 21 widgets and 12 of them are Samsung's. If those 12 widgets have been made more interactive, provide more info, and are better aesthetically I'll probably be happy. If not I'll probably end up with one M-UX page (probably my home screen) with the basics like weather, e-mail, messaging, social on it and set the flanking pages up in classic just like they are today. I'm not saying M-UX is the answer to Android on 10+" tablets but I am giving Samsung credit for some innovation in trying to make content more suitable for large format displays. The jury's out until we all get to form our own conclusions based on some hands-on time.

See i use one single Samsung widget but that is the beauty of Android. Every device is unique because every user can customize it exactly for their needs. But I can certainly live with a m-ux page. Even if it's just to show it off to my apple worshipping friends
You're right. Let's wait and see until we have it in our hands. Maybe I end up liking it as well.

Came over to this reading about M-UX - nice quotations about androids beauty.
I use 0 widgets...only single 1 page of NOVA launcher with app shortcuts - stock rom, rooted - and heavy debloated. I really like to sit my apps in ram, not to be killed by heavy TW launcher and heavy fancy widgets and bloat - all of my apps that i really use open instantly where i left them - and i am really just a 10 apps user. (Yes, but most used one is JumpDesktop to remoting to my server - so 95% of work is done on Windows machine .
A review of TabPro 8.4 is out with some screenshots of the M-UX or whatever you wanna call it:

It all depends on what Samsung's included widget and shortcut wise in M-UX. If it's a lot of stuff that's highly used it should be cool. For folks that use a ton of third party widgets not so much. I wonder is Samsung's publishing a M-UX API so third parties can provide M-UX widgets also? I hope we get the revised notification panel and other menus. The one's we have just look goofy on such a large display.
It'll be interesting to hear the board's opinion of M-UX once more people are using it. Even in this thread it's pretty clear how varied people's use of apps and widgets are. Time will tell...

I disagree with many of the sweeping statements made in this post.
In the last couple of years ive seen play up their tablet support from almost nome to sections dedicated to tablets.
What in the heck is an android purist? Is this some sort of apple hybred? Ive been on android for four years and this is pure nonsense. An os is to serve you not you the os .
As for "worst tablet", of the seven android tablets i own this is the best experience ive had. My desire is to have the best tablet and tablet experience for my needs. I want extra memmory features "pure android" doesnt support. I have always thought a pen may be the best imput for a tablet. "Pure android"? I could go on.
What makes this tablet different than all the other large android tablets? Its the features? If this tablets features fit your needs then it may be the "best" android tablet for you. If not not.
Yes i would like more flexibilty from samsung to trim tablet down. I dont like button layout. No its not perfect, but its pretty darn good.

Android's been awful at scaling apps between resolutions and display sizes. It's up to the individual app developers to figure out how to get their apps to display properly rather than have the OS manage it. Here's an example of viewing two apps I use for local supermarkets in landscape, the viewing orientation by design for 10" tablets. Ironically both are produced and managed by WebGrocer on behalf of the respective brands. Do you think this is the user experience people with large format tablets should be having? Would you find something like this in the Apple App Store?
Which of these two navigation/notification bar approaches are best for a 10" tablet where the user's hands are typically closer to the bottom? The first one with tiny text placed at the top because it was originally designed for phones or the second placed at the bottom which was designed for tablets and now retired?

An Android purist, at least to me, is someone who thinks whatever Google feeds them is what God intended and anything Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony do to alter or supplement Android is the worst form of blasphemy. If it weren't for Samsung's additions to Android, especially S Pen and Multi View, I'd seriously consider Apple products. Yes, you give up flexibility and openness but at least the apps are consistent, well designed, vetted before being made available, and simply and predictably work. I'd never own a Nexus device because I think the UI is bland and flat and I think in many cases OEM's do a better job than Google with specific apps (EG: Gallery, Camera UI, Dialer).
