Rooting from Linux without CWM? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to root my N7 directly from Linux, but I don't want to replace recovery with CWM. I like CWM on my phone, but I understand it won't allow OTA stock upgrades which I expect will be important for a while on the N7.
I've already unlocked the bootloader, but I haven't seen any instructions for rooting from Linux without replacing the standard recovery with CWM.

Can't you just flash CWM, root, and then reflash stock recovery?

There won't be any OTA that is not quickly (if not before it is released) will be available is a flashable download on XDA and other forums.
You are not going to miss anything.
You can as already posted, reflash the stock recovery, but again, whats the point.

Ok, so what's the real word on the OTA for rooted users?

None of these random workarounds posted in the dev section by random users who just seem to be guessing at things. Is there any word from a real dev working on allowing currently rooted users to install the OTA without un-rooting or flashing things through fastboot? Either by modifying the .zip itself or by creating a method to flash the provided .zip? I'm tired of seeing posts that read along the lines of "Oh, do this in post X then this in post Y and it SHOULD work, but if it doesn't check post Z and hope things work after that."
Download the nandroid backup that was posted. Restore it using Clockwork, then while still in recovery, choose mounts, and then mount /system, then flash the superuser zip from Koush's rooting tutorial, then you will have the OTA stock + rooted + stock recovery + stock boot + everything.
This is how I was able to upgrade.

Yes. You're restoring a nandroid.
Read this post, pretty much you're rerooting again and another step so it doesn't keep going back to stock recovery. Easy.

From the nandroid backup OP:
"Edit: According to xda member Luxferro the new update introduced /etc/install-recovery which may have not been in 2.3, but anyways, it runs this on bootup, and if the MD5 of the recovery doesn't match what is expected, it reflashes the stock recovery back over, so if you dont want the stock recovery to be flashed everytime you boot if your on clockwork or another non stock rom, just rename it to prevent it from running on boot. And for those of you who want to return your phone back to stock this nandroid will do that for you since it also flashes the stock recovery."
Just wipe and flash Paul's Gingerbread ROM.

Pretty much every time you flash an OTA update you're gonna lose root.
If someone took the time to modify the OTA update so you don't lose root, then it's not an OTA update anymore

Never heard of superboot, but you can try my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13762825&postcount=17
It's not a 'one-click' solution, but that's how I kept my root with 2.3.4.
Any way Not need to return FRG33?
Or some version of Froyo, no, as of now you HAVE to. When Gingerbreak works (if it ever does) for 2.3.4, it will be hard to miss.

flash custom recovery via adb, flash su from recovery, then reboot. The stock ROM will erase the custom recovery and replace it with a stock image. Your phone will be the same as it would be with superboot. Stock, rooted ROM with stock recovery.

Not quite, as superboot also replaces your boot image with an insecure boot image, which su does not.
Granted, but I highly doubt the OP really needs insecure boot given that he thinks downgrading is too much of a hassle. Without more info, I assume he just wants root in order run Titanium Backup , or Drocap, AdFree or some other market app that needs root to work for (what I also assume is) legit, non pirating reasons.
Just going from my own experiences, the easy one-click nature of superboot is a safe first step into modding and rooting for those afraid to brick their phone. I get the attraction and understand the reasoning, but you have to take the training wheels off eventually.
I was successful root nexus one...
And I use install-recovery.sh put app to ext(4G), And everything looks well...

Root XOOM on 4.0.4 without CWM?

I have a question about trying to Root the WIFI Xoom without flashing a Custom Recovery. With all the problems of going to 4.0.4 resulting from Custom Rocovery. Can root be acheived with standard recovery from XOOM?. Either flashed to device ADB? I pretty much want to stay stock rooted with no Custom Roms although bootloader is unlocked.....
bump for answer
Easy answer no...
Long answer possibly with rsd but as nothing is set up for this a custom recovery is your only real choice.. They are easy to flash n if u want stock just remove it n you can get ota updates

So I guess I could have just flashed the stock recovery from Honeycomb and tried the update. I will root again and in the future use that method. Thanks.

[Q] Is there a way to be flash the 4.3 OTA and still be rooted?

I am having some issues with an AOSP 4.3 rom. I would like to stay on 4.3 but with the complete stock rom directly from Google. Is it possible to have root on the ota stock 4.3 rom? I would rather be back on 4.2.2 stock/rooted than rooted 4.3 with too many glitches
Due to some security changes in 4.3 root won't survive an OTA. You'll need the stock recovery to update via OTA. Subsequently, you'll need a custom recovery to flash the latest version of SuperSU and have root again.
What's your current state?

I'm on a rooted 4.3 AOSP ROM with TWRP 2.6.0.0. Did a regular wipe while I was 4.2.2 before I flashed. Can you flash a custom recovery on unrooted ota 4.3?

Yes, you can.
Did you also flash the latest bootloader and radio? That's important, specially the radio (to avoid compatibilities issues with ROMs).

So theoretically if I revert to stock 4.2.2 I can update to the OTA, then flash a custom recovery (I assume I can do that via the toolkit?), then flash the root file, I'll be good? Do I need to relock my bootloader?

You can find them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43528263
I'm not sure if these zip files are flashable, though.
I'd strongly suggest you to download Google's Factory Images from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#occamjwr66v
And extract both from there to be safe (bootloader and radio images).
You won't be able to flash these images from TWRP. In this case, you'll need to use fastboot commands to flash them (but it will be safer, in my opinion).
If you're not familiar with fastboot command lines and don't have the Android ADT Bundle either please let me know, I can walk you through.
[EDIT] I found another link for the radio (a.k.a. baseband) and bootloader. Here it is:
https://www.copy.com/s/JniBu/4.3 files (mako)
I'm 100% sure these are proper versions but since they're images you'll have to flash them via fastboot.

I've never really done fastboot before. Is this way easier than flashing stock 4.2.2 and going from there?

I kinda wanna revert to 4.2.2 and OTA update to 4.3 so I can be 100% stock. I don't know if I can trust the dev who's making this AOSP ROM. Does my bootloader need to be locked to update?
bootloader will need to be unlocked. thats easy, you dont need a toolkit, you wont learn anything that way. you will need to install fastboot to your computer. you boot into your bootloader, connect to your computer via usb, start fastboot, open a command window, type.. fastboot devices(this is to check if fastboot sees your device), then type.. fastboot oem unlock(then look at your n4 screen to press yes or no). this will unlock your bootloader. download your recovery to your computer, stick it into the same folder as fastboot(do this before you start), then type in the command window.. fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img(this will flash your custom recovery). then, in the bootloader, press your volume keys to scroll to the word recovery, press your power button to boot into recovery.

No, you don't need a locked bootloader to update via OTA.
Out of curiosity, how are you going to revert to 4.2.2 if you've never used fastboot command lines? You're in an AOSP 4.3 ROM right now, with 4.2.2 bootloader and radio. Do you have a flashable 4.2.2? That's the only way I can see it happen (unless I'm missing something which is probable).

I'd never suggest any toolkit because you won't learn anything from it. I'm not sure how's current state of toolkits so I can't comment on their proper functioning with 4.3.

Yes, it is. You can pretty much flash any baseband on stock or ROMs. The question is, is it worth it? It may work flawlessly but it could also cause issues. I'd do it but I'd keep my eyes on it if something goes wrong all of a sudden.

[Q] Regarding 4.4

So, I got the OTA notification, and before I do something stupid, I have a few stupid questions I'm on stock 4.3, rooted, unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, xposed framework and franco kernel. I read in other people's threads that in order to not brick, I should go back to stock kernel, stock recovery and I'll lose root and unlocked bootloader, correct? If so, is wug's kit still usable on 4.4 to get root/unlock back? And regarding xposed, anything I should do about that, like go to stock framework lol or the framework doesn't affect the update? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to risk a brick, and THEN ask many questions Thank you very much!
First of all this won't brick your phone. You have a few options:
1-download the ota zip, go into recovery, do a full wipe and flash the ota zip. (This is the quickest and easiest method. After doing this you will still have your custom recovery, and the contents of your internal storage will be untouched.)
2-Flash the factory images. (Your phone gets completely wiped, including your custom recovery.)

Just go into Wugs and flash the latest firmware directly, you won't have to change anything else.
