I want to make a clean start on my a500. (3.21)It has slowed down over the past year. I want to erase everything and reinstall apps using app monster. I was thing of flashing my a500 with ICS, but I am not sure whether this only installs the OS alone, but also the apps.
I am curious about ICS as I have waited patiently for OTA upgrade but haven't seen it.
Any tips are appreciated

if you want ICS OTA make sure you have the acer enhancement app from the market thats the only way you can get it OTA
I think that if you just hit the privacy tab in your settings menu and choose factory reset it will do what you are wanting. As far as upgrading goes... Yes. ICS updates will only update the operating system, and yes , your apps and settings and clutter would still be there. So if you feel like you are truly bogged down and need to just wipe it all, do that reset. And then after you'v'e used your monster backup, go to the Play Store and grab the Acer Enhancement tool that Gears mentioned. You'll be set. But do yourself a favor and do some kind of backup first. If you are all stock, it might pay out to get root and then get Titanium Backup or other just so you don't lose something that you may have forgot about.

I do have all my apps backed up with App Monster. I am hoping this is all the backup I need. Are you suggesting Titanium Backup as an option. I assume you need root to use T. backup.
BTW...... How can I backup the passwords and settings I have for all the different networks I have connected to?

Titanium Pro version will do all of what you would need and more, but requires root. You have to buy the paid version to be able to save your wifi settings, bookmarks and more advanced stuff than just apps. Totally worth the price if you can't do a backup in recovery. But be sure and save your photos and documents manually. I don't think that Titanium gets those.
I looked for a free way to collect the wifi info. There are a few apps on the play store for this. So if you have already paid for the full version of App Monster then you might just want to find one of them. It might not make much sense to own 2 backup apps...
You can do a factory reset then there is another thing that shows other data folder and you can chose and delete the ones you want

I just had a bad experience with MyBackup Pro. I just re-flashed from Sky Raider 2.00 to 2.01. Everything worked beautifully after re-booting under the new ROM. So then I attempted to Restore my apks+data with MyBackup Pro. But after that finished, I never saw such a mess after a re-boot. Thank God I had a nand backup... So now that I'm back where I started from, is there an app out there that actually works? I'd like to try this again.
I'm not sure why MyBackup didn't work. I heard some good things about it, and that is why I decided to try it.
I've also heard of Titanium Backup...but has anyone restored SUCCESSFULLY after a ROM upgrade with this utility?
Just posted this in another thread so I feel like a broken record but yes, I used Titanium to backup pre-2.2, installed CyanogenMod 6, and restored apps+data (NOT system data) and everything seems to have turned out fine.
When you say you've never seen such a mess after a reboot, what exactly do you mean?
I use titanium everyone I write and install a new rom,for sky raider and cyanogen..great app.never had a problem

The "mess" I talked about was some apps that wouldn't run. I would get errors instead. Outlines for some widgets instead of widgets. Wallpaper didn't change, but icon placement was as it was before re-flash. POP mail account lost config. Etc. I didn't make a list. I just said enough of this and did a nand restore.
So if I use Titanium, what should the procedure be to be sure I get back everything as it was? Or am I asking too much? Will I still have to reconfigure some things?

I use Backup Pro and haven't had any issues. I have had a few oddball apps not backup but never one that I bought or downloaded from the Market.

I've only used it a few times so I'm not exactly a pro, but here goes. There's a tab that says backup/restore, that has a list of your apps and whether or not there's a backup of the app. If you hit Menu and go into batch mode, that's where all the good stuff is. Before I flash a rom I'll go into batch and back up all user apps and system data. You can also schedule backups to be performed while you're sleeping or something, just so you always have new backups.
To restore, you can go into batch mode and restore apps and data. When I went to CyanogenMod6 from stock, I restored only apps and app data. I didn't restore system data because I'm pretty sure if you restore system data when moving between roms it causes a lot of problems (I'm not an expert though, might wanna ask someone more knowledgeable).
Another thing to consider: if you have a lot of apps, Titanium is a giant pain in the ass unless you have the donate version. With the free version, it asks for confirmation when restoring each app, so that can be very bothersome. The paid one does everything automatically.

I am unable to use Titanium Backup. It says I need to have BusyBox, which will not install saying that I do not have "nand" access or something (a bit of a noob here).
I've also tried to backup through ROMManager, but all it does is reset my phone and tells me that it cannot backup, and gives me a long list of things to try. I have done most if not all, to no avail. Help?

Thanks, I appreciate the advice on doing this the correct way. I know what my mistake was now, it was the fact that I also restored the system data. I'll try this again tonight when I get home...

If you go into Titanium, there is a button that says "problems", click that and there should be a button that should install busybox for you.

gmonox is on point. I went through all of this yesterday after getting Froyo. My apps all reinstalled and seem to work just fine with one exception. I had a NexusMod Live wallpaper that wouldn't work. Sad too because it was my favorite because it was Cyanogen inspired and just used the cyan color. Other than that, everything seemed to work fine.
MyBackup Pro still has issues under Froyo. The permissions banner will not go away after backing up. I have to reboot my phone to get it to go away. My task killers don't work on this.

I currently own an HTC Hero, and will most likely be getting an HTC Desire HD.
Now, I have almost 150 apps on my Hero, and I really dread the hassle of re-installing and setting up everything to my liking. It has taken me almost a year to set this up the way I want it.
Would it be possible, using Titanium Backup, to make a backup of EVERYTHING possible on the Hero, and then switch the memorycard to the Desire HD and restore it there, maybe without the app settings? I am thinking that this could be a problem because of the different specs, but I do not know too much under-the-hood-stuff regarding Android.
I am hoping to not have to go through the market for that many downloads.
Any thoughts on this?

Market apps will automatically re-install when you sign in into your new phone. For the rest there is Titanium backup
I planned on doing the same, but doesn't Titanium require root?
I can't remember what it's like to not have root, the thought is scary
Try Android commander for the PC, Plug in your hero, goto application manager, select all the apps and click backup, then when you get your new phone selsct all the backed up apps and click install Hope it helps

It does need root that is correct but I'm sure, as stated there are other ways to backup apps. I'm not sure about if you have your apps on ext partition though. I wager root wont take long and then comes recovery roms and then customs... mmm custom

Now we just need a root confirmation. Yes, the thought of owning an unrooted phone is scary. Not sure what to think of it. I hope it will not last long.
All I ask is root. I can wait for the custom ROMs. There will be plenty to play with.
You just need to pick your apps from /data/data, copy them over with adb, and do a fix_permissions

I used Titanium to migrate my app settings from Milestone to Nexus One, but they're on similar versions of Android and both are HDPI devices.
I can tell you that Market apps don't always reinstall automatically if you're going from one phone to another. In any case I suggest a fresh market install of your most important apps, and then restore their data by Titanium if necessary. If this causes a crash, wipe their data again. Less important apps, could just try restoring them directly. Run Titanium's Market Doctor when that's done.
I also suggest using apps like BookmarkSB, SMS Backup Restore, Call Log Backup Restore, etc to transfer those records. May work better than trying to Titanium restore data across different OS versions, and doesn't require root. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

i am being flashing different Roms all the time to try out various Roms, but everytime i flash the rom by full wipe, iam having nightmare in restoring all the apps. i have around 200 apps and i also have the titanium backup, but as everyone know i have to press install 200 times to restore all the apps. it is making me crazy.
i want to know how u guys addressing this, is there any way out or have to live with this nightmare
Latest market or android version sync your market apps when you launch market the first time. At least it did that for me stock kl7. But DON'T go to your downloads open market and press back leave the apps to get installed from notification bar if you press my downloads after a few you get a error saying you don't have space on your phone and if it stops once forget to continue it later they disappear so if you fail with it. code factory reset it and try again it is faster. Done 4 or 5 till i succeed. But works on market apps only rest manually.

Are you talking about apps from your myapp list in the market? Or apps from titanium backup? If you have free version, you will have to install apps manually. If you have titanium pro, it will install all 200 apps automatically with no user input.
Does anyone else find it very time consuming to have to reinstall all of your data after every rom wipe? I find my self never leaving a rom for awhile because of the whole set up process including the Google set up.
It takes me an hour.

Nandroid? I only have 1 one my phone and thats 2.3.3 stock.
They take long to make, then they just sit there wasting space. Its not like you can just go back to them lime nothing, because by that time they'll be outdated.

Titanium is definitely ics friendly. If you have pro (or on free.. idk), set up filters with your must have apps. When you clear data ans flash a new rom, it will verify your TB account and restore settings, including filters. Just toggle the filter and do a batch restore. I was in the same boat you were til I started doing this.
And yes, TB also has a feature to restore apps or data, extracting from a nandroid backup.

Or you could use es file explorer. Just go to the app manager button on the central screen, by pressing it it shows up all ur apps. Choose which ones you want and back them up. After flashing just restore using file explorer in the same manner...
The apps can also be found on the sdcard under backups/apps.
Astrofile manager does exactly the same job.. your pick.

Does anyone partition using cmw? I think its possible to some how do that, like save Ti as the drive, so all you have to do is just sign in to Google rather than having to download it.

just save a copy of a TB apk to your SD.
Thats if the custom rom that has a file explorer preloaded. If not has to download also from market
Another annoying thing Google doesn't add to OS besides a restart option is a built in file explorer

TB pro has an option to create a TB update.zip This will allow you to flash/install TB threw CWR

thats ridiculous:
1. im pretty sure ive noticed mine being around 6 minutes
2. they arent a waste of space since they are a back up file. i keep 3 always deleting the oldest one.
3. you CAN go back to them at anytime like nothing
4. i make mine every wednesday while im showering (which takes more then 6 minutes)

Wrong. Even the free one lets you create a flashable zip.
Moreover, you could make it build as a regular update.zip or even make it install as a system app or an user app.

Noob question...flashed phone for first time yesterday and performed a backup using titanium free. When I flash a new rom don't you usually have to wipe data first? Would this not wipe the backup from your phone?

It stores a copy in a folder called TitaniumBackup. If you wipe the SD card (or storage for us) that is different.
It is a hassle having to reinstall an app like Chase that requires a confirmation text. TB (Pro for me) makes restoring login info, etc a snap. Worth the $.

Noob replying to a noob (so pardon me, if i stumble):
When flashing a new ROM, you wipe - system, dalvik cache, data and boot ( perhaps not reqd.) Wiping SD card not required when installing new ROMs, unless it's the first time, and you're putting CWR on a Nexus S... However, some developers do recommending a full SD Card wipe as well. I assume you copy the Titanium backup folders to your PC, and copy it back before restoring.. Haven't tried that yet..

Probably will have to buy Pro, since it's getting to be a pain to restore my apps, with the permissions for each one...
Somehow, TiBackup doesn't seem to restore my homescreen settings, though I remember reading somewhere that it should do that as well..
Also, learnt the hardway not to try restoring Call logs and Messages when moving from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM... Boot loops with 2 ICS roms (Nexusbeam and Brainmaster's )
So, what all can you restore using TiB with your eyes closed?
I am still new to this phone, but with the Evo we had a zip file that wiped the system, data, cache, etc instead of remembering which ones to wipe. Maybe there is something like that for the Nexus?
I only restore apps, so I am not much help outside of that. With TB Pro all you have to do is click batch and restore all the apps with data automatically while you sit there and wait. I generally restore user apps only, maybe someone else can chime in with advice on restoring settings?
There is also an option to save backups on your drop box account, but I don't.
I am a flashaholic, one of the reasons I bought a used NS4G was because I was bored with the Evo. Titanium Backup (Pro) makes it fast and easy to restore apps and data when flashing new ROMs.
Is there a way to make a full backup of all the installed apps on my phone? Because I want to test some ROM's and I already have much applications...

Use titanium backup or ROM toolbox for app back up, titanium is nicer in my opinion.
Also before testing any new Roms its a good idea to make a nandroid backup first (via recovery) so after trying some new ones you can always go back without having to reinstall/setup anything much

Titanium Backup is the best, but it has a high learning curve, and its not very intuitive to use. For newbs you can try My backup root https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupRoot&hl=en Theres a free version that does everything you need. saves text messages, calls, etc.

Like they said, Titanium Backup Pro. For me the best, I bought paid version and I'm happy about it. With the free version you can do pretty much the same, but while restoring apps on a fresh ROM, you are going to have to confirm installation of every single one application. Instead of batch installation in paid option.
Other than that, TBP lets you uninstall system apps which lightens your ROM.
Have fun with trying out ROMs, with every new one I'm feeling like I'm getting a new phone
Titanium Backup is the best: fast and easy (but remember your phone must be rooted)!!!
MyBackup Pro works fine, though I prefer Titanium Backup.
TB could be a bit easier to use though. Many confusing options and the backup/restore menu can be hard to find if you don't know where to look. You can access backup and restore options from the checkmark icon on the top right corner. And be sure you don't have any app filtering options enabled in TB if you want to backup everything.
