So... is this the flicker problem - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sometimes while watching the screen, every now and then I get a flicker, I only noticed it when I was staring at the screen reading a book, if so I am sad because my OTG cable just arrived and I was having so much fun

Your life is ruined.

well... at least it works and theres no other horrible problems so I can still play with it until google send me a new unit :silly:
Reckon I should wait a few months so I guarentee a unit from the new batch, or just do it now?

You know what. As I was reading your post I started to see tons of flickering. Thanks a lot. Lol jk. Better now than later. I'm still in my 15 day window

I'm stuck dealing with Asus.
I'm leaving the country for a 3 week vacay so I can't deal with a 4th exchange from Google Play.

I think it's worth a shot. My replacement is perfect, much like many of the initial batch / recipients. Risk you take, right?, jumping on that first wave. Seems like things have settle down, think the negative outcry is just more easily heard thAn the positive.

Definitely going ahead and do an exchange now. Got my replacement unit today and this one doesn't have a flicker problem at all. My last one had really bad flicker.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Well I only got it last week so that makes it better if I submit that its faulty at this point..

might seem like a stupid question, but where the hell do I go to organize a replacement

I've seen the flicker on mine and called to replace it. I was told to try a factory reset to see if it was hardware or software. I said I'd try tomorrow and call back/set up replacement if it doesn't work. What do guys think? Could it be software?

Who has a non-defective Nexus 7

I'm sort of freaking out of all these issues I see in the forums. I received my nexus 7 last night, and it seemed ok but now I'm reading of all these problems. I'll have to wait until later in the day until I can check.
So while I'm waiting I wonder who has actually gotten a good Nexus 7. If you go by most of these threads you'd think no one.

Mine is defective. It doesn't have any screen separation, light bleed, rattling sounds, or lag. I'm gonna have to return it.
I got two good ones.
Mine is perfectly fine. Bought from GP store. 16GB model. No light bleed, no separation, no squeaks or creaks. Only issue is flicker when light set at 0 when reading in bed in the dark. But this occurred on all my other tabs as well so no biggie. Only flickers if wifi is actively doing something.
I ordered two, one on the 5th and the other on the 17th. The one I ordered on the 5th has the lifted screen issue, but the other N7 is perfect. No other issues on the first N7.
No issues here

Mine is not defective. no screen issues, no creaking, no battery issues, its nice and shiny (for now) and it works. got mine from macmall
Perfect, picked it up 2 days ago, new shipment to Staples.
Got mine from Currys and no defects or issues so far.
Mine is pretty good. im not going to look at any defective threads it might jinx it.
These threads account for like .01% of all the nexus 7's out there. So add another maybe 1% that might have a problem that don't post it on here and that makes 1.01% of thousands of nexi out there with a problem

I don't think that's accurate. I purchased my N7 from Sam's Club on Friday the 13th and didn't notice the screen lifting until today. Just got back from returning it.
People who are saying "no problem here" need to wait a while and then make absolutely sure that their display is flush on the left side.
As for whether or not this is the minority defect you're claiming it to be, right now I'm only listening to those posters who have discovered the problem and used their replacement tablet for a week. Seeing as the device has only been on sale for a week, these people don't exist yet. They're the only ones who know what to look for, and I'll be waiting to see how this develops before re-ordering.
Sorry for not staying on topic, but it bugs me that someone is dismissing my experience as an anomaly and blatantly making up stats to do it.

True, but that doesn't mean that I saw a ghost because someone told me a story. The screen was in fact lifting ever so slightly on the left side. I was concerned that it might get worse over time, so I returned it. Also, I had a single dead pixel near the top of the screen and part of me was looking for a reason.
I agree that most people who do receive a "defective" unit will never notice it, and would not complain if they did, unless it gets worse.
Whew I feel somewhat better

For those who say their device isnt defective . Can you test your digitizer? See if touching the lower part of your screen cancels out each other or if multiple touches causes some points not to register.
Please report back ... there's a know issue with the digitizer not registering on the first batch of N7's from the play store.
Here's the programs to test with :

Where can I buy a Nexus 7 in UK that will ship to EU?

Hi.
I'm looking for a Nexus 7 but I can't seem to find any place which can ship to Denmark, I stumbled across Clove but £224 for the 8 gig version is just too much.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

Got mine from eBay with next day ups delivery to central cph a week ago and its perfect

my honest answer is DONT!!!!
At the moment there is to many hardware issues with the device.
-Screen separation
-Screen Flicker
-Light bleads
Imagine. on average (on xda) people are replacing their n7 about 2 times.
how much money youre going to spend on postage just to get a good unit?
Fair enough you might get a good unit at first time but you never know.
just wait till its going to be released in your country.
I was planning on buying online but decided not to just due to the cost of sending it back (for example had my Galaxy nexus shipped back twice and had to pay for it).
Oh well, I might wait.
Does these problems really occur that often
What did you pay for yours on eBay?

well if you look through the topics there is more issues than positive things here.
main problem on n7 is screen flickering. this is definitely hardware issue and everyone has that, however, not everyone is so OCD about it. I'm on my 3rd one now and I have screen separation (it doesnt bother me that much tho as i can sort it out myslef), however there is "microscopic" flickering. 95% of people I would show it to probably wont even notice it yet to me its just friggin pain in the ass.

Because those who are happy with their device, don't post. They're busy enjoying their devices. Don't discourage others who will more than likely get a perfect device because a select few who have problems. It is very unfortunate that you have had problems and I hope you finally get one that you are pleased with.
As for the flicker. It is not 'definitely' hardware. The one x had similar issues with the tegra 3 GPU. It was solved with an ota update. I had that issue and my one x is perfect now. We in the one x forums were certain it was hardware. Loads of flaming and difference of opinions and it was sorted with a small update - I hope you guys with issues will get the same treatment.

Screen bleed. RMA?

Ive recieved RMA today, device is nearly perfect. The only issue is the screen bleed. ive attached one screenie with auto bright and other at max.
Do you guys have the same? Can you post here?

Ouch, that looks horrible. I would have definitely RMA'd that as well myself. Mine is also "nearly perfect" and has two very small areas of backlight bleed but nowhere near as dramatic as yours and I don't think that I'll be RMA-ing mine for that alone.

Pretty much normal for LCD displays, you can always get screen bleed to appear when viewing in the dark and at high/full brightness, it is a limitation of the technology. When you have it on auto or sensible brightness and use the phone normally can you notice it? If the answer is no, don't worry about it.
Regards
Phil
I can see it ocasionaly. For example, when I started up I saw google logo and could see it perfectly...

I wouldnt be surprised if the RMA was returned because of screen bleed and then they sent it to you and hoped you wouldnt notice. Every RMA is probably an old return since they dont even have new ones to sell.
Did you get the RMA right away or did you have to wait awhile? If it was right away then it must be a faulty return.
It took 5 days. Now that you say this.. Phone had some dirt and had finguerprints tho "i was the first one to open it"

I bought three Nexii on November 27th and all three had screen bleed. I can't see OP's pictures to compare but each phone has a ~1/4" area of bleed with one phone having two. This has only been visible when playing a movie and a black screen is shown at the beginning. I don't notice it at boot up, for instance.
I don't know if this bothers me enough to RMA yet. My thinking is to punt the issue into next year, wait for supply to catch up with demand, and then RMA for a new unit. Two of my Nexii are going to relatives so unless they notice it, I don't think I'll bother RMAing them.
I remember seeing someone mention in a thread that LG can't seal an LCD to save their skins and that person is knowledgeable, in retrospect. The issue looks exactly like some adhesive wasn't applied or pressed down evenly during assembly. I wouldn't be surprised if assembly by hand is the cause of the problem, due to expediency in order to fulfill existing orders.

You cannot seriously believe they do this? They have separate batches for new sales and RMA.
I agree with everything u said. Mine has 3 bleeds 2 on top and one on the top left. Im not going to RMA my N4 though its a non win either way so many people get stuck in a RMA cycle. If your phones are good other than light bleeds ID stick with them. But that's your call good luck with everything.

You have one year for manufacturer defects. Please hold off at least a few more weeks on RMA so people whose devices develop issues that seriously affect functionality can get a replacement quickly.

My guess is that it's common practice. I know I've RMA'd devices to other manufacturers and gotten back "refurbished" devices. I'd be surprised if the refurbish process is any more complicated than booting it and looking for cracks in the glass.
A certain percentage of all electronics will be returned. A subset of those are perfectly functional devices. This is a function of having variable intelligence in the population. Now, rather than spend resources to determine which exactly of those returns are actually pristine devices that the mouthbreathers couldn't decipher, if the percentage in a sample is high enough, the company might well choose to mail out any that aren't obviously damaged and take the chance that the device will satisfy the customer. If it doesn't, they can always mail another.
Hiring a worker to mail things is a lot cheaper than hiring and training a worker to diagnose complex devices. It's also much slower, which means more labor costs. Even if they have to mail a device twice, it still comes out cheaper and faster than diagnosing every single return.

Raise your hand if your N7FHD was working with no issues out of the box.

Just want to let future owners read stuff other than the people with issue. Ying and yang type of thing.

No issues on the first 32GB I bought.
Bought a second one.
At first I thought it had issues with the GPS getting and keeping lock.
I installed Fasterfix. Manually set my GPS server to time.gpsonextra.net
With GPS Status app, did a reset to clear A-GPS data. Downloaded new data.
Rebooted just to be safe.
Since then I have yet to have problems getting a lock and keeping it. Not getting the "freezing" problem that I've been reading about. Don't know why.
Maybe I got something that works . . . twice in a row?
Having had bad experiences with ASUS, I'm really, really, really quite surprised.
.
I think... Weak battery because the battery is small anyway

Was browsing deals through the Living Social App, and the device rebooted on me. Not 100% certain if that's reboot bug people have been reporting, or simply an app malfunctioning. At the moment, I'm going to chalk it up to a misbehaving app.
I preface this by saying that I returned 6 first generation N7 tablets before finally giving up and not buying one. I purchased my second generation N7 12 days ago and it only has two small "issues" but I don't consider them serious enough to exchange:
1) A small amount of light bleed at the "top" of the tablet (the side where the front facing camera is)
2) Buzzing noise coming from speakers
All in all I am happy with the tablet.
Yup, no problems here. 16gb from Amazon

Random Black Screen Flashes

I have owned a Nexus 7 2nd gen for a couple months now and have just started to get random flashes of black (occurs for not even a quarter second) ...
I am wondering what causes this...
I have not damaged the Nexus in any way and bought it brand new..
I have only used CleanRom and PA ROM...
The functionality of the tablet remains great, but the flashes are very annoying ...I have tried clean installing multiple times but the flashes still happen...
Any feedback/solutions would be a big help...
Thanks

I had that happen soon enough for a return to be viable. Do some more Google searching and you'll find people who fixed this as a hardware issue. They had to open the back and fiddle a connection. Didn't sound to hard but I just went to best buy instead.
Happy hunting, sorry I don't have a link.

Yea I would exchange it before it is too late. Doesn't seem that troublesome but if it got worse, or worst, disconnected entirely, it would bring bad news.

Just because you bought it off ebay doesn't mean it doesn't still carry the 1 year manufacturer warranty on the hardware. It would require you to send it in, but worth a shot.
Once you pop the back and start fiddling with hardware, you run the risk of doing enough damage where Asus will void the warranty. I think I would check with Asus first before resorting to hardware modifications.
