Have attempted to search forums for this and have not found anything... I understand this might be a limited use case...
The ability to create a wifi hotspot is gone from the build of android running on the N7. Is there a way to add it back in?
At first this might seem bizarre since the N7 doesn't have any 3G to share. I would like to be able to transfer files to the N7 using wifi but without relying on another device. I can use AirDroid to transfer files, however without the wifi hotspot feature this is a moot point. Sadly the play store seems to only offer apps that create a shortcut to the built in hotspot features and don't work.

As it stands, for me to transfer files wirelessly between my laptop and N7, I would need a wireless network. I don't currently have a wireless network to connect to. Instead, I want to use the hotspot on the N7, connect with my laptop and then use AirDroid or similar to transfer files.
I suppose a similar way to accomplish this would be with an AdHoc network, although I believe Android will not connect to these with it's default configuration.
Because Bluetooth doesn't exist? I'm a little confused on what you're really asking. =.3
Sure, I guess the end result is a little like sharing files over Bluetooth. Except without Bluetooth, obviously.

i just purchased an CPO 2009 Acura TL with the tech package, it has the ability to use my phones data plan for stuff (AcuraLink), and when it was trying to connect to my phone, it was failing.
im not sure, but can our phones sync/share/exchange the network access via bluetooth? my car has bluetooth set up, where i just turn it on and it accesses it without a problem, just wondering why it wont sync up the AcuraLink stuff.

You doing wifi hotspot? Maybe you have to pay the extra money to tether...
He's trying to share internet through BT. It's not the same as WiFi hotspot. AFAIK, the feature isn't supported by default in the OS and/or in Sense overlay, you might need an app (Barnacle or one of those) to share internet over BT.
Sounds like you want blue tooth tethering. I'm pretty sure it's possible to do with our phones. I don't remember if I did it with a specific ROM though or if I just used an app for it. I feel like some roms might have it built in, I just don't remember which since I never use it.
Try out Barnacle or Wifi tether though, if it was an app that let me do it then I'm pretty sure it was one of those. I don't think either of those is on the market btw, so you'll have to search for them.
Update: Zipsnet ICS has it btw, and it seems to be functioning properly for me. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure alot of the roms I've used have it available. It's under the tethering settings.

Not sure whats the trouble with my N7. My Win 8 laptop fails to see it in the MTP mode. It does see it sometimes if I change to PTP but then the data copying capabilities get limited.
I was trying to capitalize the "WiFi Direct" to move files from my Note-2 to N7 but looks like there as well are some problems. I can pair but I can't transfer no files.
Are there any options other than the USB OTG? I personally hate carrying extra stuff, however small it be. Since the phone would always be with me, its the most logical thing to carry all the data (have odd 40gigs available) on the phone and transfer to the N7 wherever the need be.

Bluetooth is slower than a snail.
The issue is some frakked up rights issue. The devices pair fine via wifi. The transfer gets rolled down by some "Transfer not allowed" $hit. Even NFC doesn't seem to be complying.
I am very sure some custom ROM would get that fixed but then what is the point? I need pure google experience.
May be some app on play store?
In the worst case I'll sell this thing off. The Note-2 is good enough for most of my needs except for movie watching (and book reading (and internet browsing (and timely updates (and simplicity (and.....:silly))))

Good option while at my home but not when I am on the move. Transferring big files is again a hassle. Not to mention the data network dependency. I just need something which can workout directly between the Note-2 and N7.

Nexus Media Importer is another possibility. It will import files from a flash drive to your Nexus over an OTG USB cable but will not transfer files from the Nexus to the flash drive.

Thanks to both of you but unfortunately thats not what I am looking at. I wish to have direct transfer, without needing any extra wifi router to be dependent upon. At home I have this Belkin N600 to which I can attach my 1TB USB drive and all the data is available over the network. Accessing stuff at home is not a problem. On the go, I don't have high speed internet or my LAN. Thats where I am seeking possibilities.

You haven't read well enough. You don't need WiFi router nor data conection with 'fast file transfer'. it uses wifi tether from your phone and sends files directly to your tab. Try it, its free.
I have tried to search for an answer to this with no real success. I believe that it is possible to connect a USB 3G dongle such as Huawei E1750 to an MK809 such as Justop K9. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm that? Then I would like to know if it is possible to then share that 3G connection via wifi tethering to other devices.
Basically I'm trying to combine 3G modem and wifi router into a hdmi stick/dongle. If anyone has tried this I would be interested to hear their experience. If it is someting that is really not practical then I more than likely will give it a miss. I would need to use this as my "main" internet connection, although I wouldn't consider myself a "power user" I do stream youtube and online such as BBC iPlayer. I have had good experience with wifi tethering using my old HTC HD2 (flashed with android 4.0) and can get 4Mb connection speeds which allows me to stream no problem.
If this works well I would then be connecting a usb hard drive and using webdav server app to share the contents to my other devices.
I would appreciate any guidance! :good:

I think it could be done as long as the router has a connection but just a bit of info, I watch YouTube quite a bit maybe 4-5 20/30min vids a day and in the past 7 days YouTube has used probably 12gig of data. Since everything is HD. I know a lot of dongles have data limits. IPlayer doesn't work great these devices for now you have to use the flash version and its a little buggy. Its best to get it from xbmc add on.
Oh and the 808 doesn't have tether not sure about the 809

It's a virgin media contract I'm looking at. Supposedly truly unlimited according to vm themselves and can be used to tether. I got my dad one and he uses it to tether his laptop and ubisurfer when away. It works very well when I've tried it myself.
Thanks for the tip about tethering on 808. I imagine this is just a software limitation? It was possibly never considered when the rom was built. I think there are Google play apps that will enable this on phones that didn't have it as an original option. I'm hoping it will work in a similar way.
Xbmc will be on my list. I assume it's possible to side load flash onto these things.

yes that would be interesting. I know that a lot of usb devices are supported. tried a webcam on it. Works perfect in combination with skype. for wath I read. its also possible to use a usb to lan adapter. maybe an option for the poor reception.

Thanks for that. It is nice to hear a positive review about the Justop K9 as I was considering one anyway. This project might just save me some money having to buy other equipment. Would you be able to try whether you can install one of the free non root wifi tether apps from the play store? Obviously there would be no internet connection, but if you can establish a wifi hotspot and connect a phone to it then it's a good sign.
As for the USB to ethernet, I have a couple of those connectors spare. I'm aware you can use them on various android devices to give them an internet connection, but I don't know whether the reverse is true? Is it possible to share a 3G connection to the USB, and via the ethernet connection to a separate wifi router for instance? I can't find a good answer to that. I'm gonna have a play with my TF700 and see what I can accomplish!

No need to install an app, android 4 onwards supports wifi tethering natively. Just needed to go into the 'more' menu and set up from there. Managed to connect easily with my Sony Tablet but, as you say, couldn't browse as the stick wifi was being used to tether.
Spoke too soon on the on demand stuff, seems itv player, 4od and 5od have been messing around with their encryption so the xbmc add ons have stopped working, I'm sure the devs are working on it. Iplayer add on still works and there is a work around using firefox anyway.

Can it be done? I tried foxfi but it crashed when I tried to enable AP.
I can use my phones tether option, but when I do my ftp app says "please connect to a network"

To clarify, I want to share ftp from my phone, connected to host AP on my nexus 10, and access on my nexus 10. I have been able to connect my laptop and tablet to my phone AP, and successfully shared files (apache2 http server) from my laptop to tablet, but this requires my laptop to be constantly on, also my phone.

If you host the FTP on your phone, and want to connect the Nexus 10 to the FTP to share files, then all you do is on your phone turn on wifi tether, and connect to the wireless network the phone creates from your N10. I dont think it is possible to make a tablet an access point that doesnt have a cell service internet connection. In order for the Nexus 10 to be an "access point" it would actually be just a repeater from your routers (or phones, or whatever) internet connection. But you already have that on your phone and by making your phone the hotspot you just connect your tablet to the phone like it was connecting to any normal wireless network.

No, I just want my Nexus 10 to be able to HOST [read: have IP 192.168.43.1], to be able to connect my phone to it [192.168.43.105], so that my FTP app will see I really am connected to wifi.
In tether mode, phone has 192.168.43.1, however the app doesn't recognize it as being connected since it's in tether, and not regularly connected to wifi, and will not start because it says Please connect to a network.
This is why I would like my Nexus 10 to host an infrastructure network.

This is because it configured your wifi radio for a different mode that allows others to connect. I dont think it is possible to have the same radio be configured in two separate ways at the same time.
WHy not just do what the majority of people do and get a dropbox for free and host the files there. Your tablet and phone will both be able to access it.

I think I am picking up what you are laying down.
You want to start a wireless network between your N10 and your phone without using a wireless router or access point device.
If you were trying this back in the old days you would simply use a ethernet cross over cable between two ethernet cards and set them to have the same subnet.
Can't say that I know how to do this though with wireless networking.

This is the type of thing Wifi Direct is supposed to be for. The Nexus 10 supports that, it's under the menu in wireless settings. Not sure if your phone does, of course.
Also, depending on AP settings, two devices (clients) on the same wireless network can communicate with each other. It's relayed through the AP, so it will be somewhat slower.

You are being a **** man.. and I uploaded borderlands 2 in less than 3 hours to my drop box.. you don't need data tho, but you may need a cellular radio. Why not use a PC or a USB otg cable and connect the 2? Do it all the time with my N7 and HTC vivid

Turn on ftp server within es file explorer on phone. Connect to phone from tablet over WiFi. Phone assigns tablet IP address - in this case 192.168.43.131. On the tablet open es file explorer and define the ftp server that is running on the phone. Once done perform the ftp connection from the tablet to the phone. You can then ftp between the two for as much as you want.
I am paying for phone tethering app on phone. The apps I see in the market seem to identify issues with JB or seem just too old to depend on. Regardless, if you just want to ftp between the two you do not need tethering. You need an app that will act as a hotspot managing devices, security and IP addresses. Another option is a cheap portable access point. Again, you keep focusing on ftp - not the internet. The ap creates a WiFi network that your phone and tablet can connect to - no different than a crossover cable between two wired Ethernet devices. As long as the both are on the same network you are good to go.
BTW - you may think you've perfectly explained what you are looking for answers to. You have not so you should not be too surprised at some of the answers.

I think I explained my FTP doesn't honor tether mode, it technically can access wlan0 to get ip to bind, just the dev didn't allow it.

Instantly stream from phone to tablet? If that is all you need then the tablet does not need to function as AP - the phone can do it. All you need is the two units on the same network.

That's the problem, my main router only gets about 150KB/s when I stream it both connected to that. I need a router in my room, and my phone has a tether mode that acts as a router [192.168.43.1, gives DHCP IPs, etc]. The only thing, the program I used ["FTP server"] doesn't recognize I have a 192.168 IP, because it sees the regular wifi is off [and tethering is on, which I solely use as a router, not internet].
I will look into the other file manager mentioned, it sounds like it might be able to do what I'm looking for. thanks

If all you want to do is stream movies and music, try searching Play store for a DLNA Media Server. A quick search on Google turned up many. You should be able to forget about what wireless router, IP, etc, - your phone/tablet should show up to the network as a DLNA Media Server.
The other solution with ES File Explorer will indeed work as a file access component. I use it at home to access movies on my home network.

Is it possible to code an app that will allow a device (Android or iOS) to create a hotspot and link several other devices with each other, allowing files to be transferred with each other WITHOUT tethering the host device's data network? Just a simple router with no internet I suppose.
Adhoc won't work because most mobile devices will have issues connecting to an adhoc network.
If possible, I would like for the code to allow the hotspot to not only connect the devices via WiFi but not kill the mobile data connection when each device connects to the WiFi hotspot. Essentially connecting to the hotspot and data network at the same time; the connections working simultaneously but completely separate from each other.
In a perfect world I would like to get this coded cross-platform: ie Android/iOS and maybe even Windows/Mac.
A tough question I know, but thanks for any responses. My primary concern would be Android, because it seems like it would be more suitable to make this happen, and I actually own one.

Maybe disable data and try a hotspot app? If you have a wired and wireless connection on a computer, turn it into a hotspot, using apps like Connectify (on Windows).

Thanks, I've already actually been able to accomplish that with one of the many WiFi tether apps. I am actually wanting to know if it's possible that I can code a version of that, that doesn't require root, works on most phones, creates a hotspot (doesn't just use the stock one), and doesn't use data. I suppose I could deal with it disabling data. As long as it never ever deals with data while the app is on, because I would prefer to not deal with carrier issues.
Alternatively I wouldn't mind using Bluetooth as long as I can connect the host device to more than one client devices, where the host device acts as a server. Can Android connect several devices via bluetooth?

I don't think you can do multiple Bluetooth. Honestly you'd be better trying to do it from a computer/router.

That's the thing, we're trying to do this for our app with no extra devices. No worries I'll keep brainstorming.
You might want to check out an app called JoikuShare (sorry, can't post links yet).
