Bring my Droid X Up To Date? - Droid X General

So, I've got a Droid X I am planning on giving over to a friend of mine. Its too old and I'm too busy to bother much with selling it, plus he's a good guy and his current phone is like the saddest thing ever (a half broken ZTE piece of garbage held together with tape and running like Android 1.6). I haven't messed with the Droid X in over a year, and because of its locked bootloader, I know its somewhat complicated, with "2nd init" ROMs and the like.
At this point I'm not too sure what I'm looking at with it. I goofed around last night and got it somewhat up to date, with an AOKP-ICS ROM on it. It was already rooted and I have CWM on it as well, so its not a bad starting point.
The phone doesn't have any data / phone plan attached to it at all, which is usually OK in the short term since I can get it on WiFi, but now the WiFi just isn't working. I can SCAN for WiFi networks, but when attempting to join any, the phone immediately gets kicked back off the network.
Tested it on like 3 different networks. What's weird is it was working fine last night.
I'm showing a Baseband Version of BP_C_01.09.13P and a Kernel Version of 2.6.32.9 built on August 20th, 2011.
Build version says IMM761.
Mod Version says aokp_shadow_build-39,
The CWM I have installed on the phone is only 2.5.0.8! That seems really old, but again I don't wanna update it if it'll break things
I would like to update it as much as I can but I know I need to be careful so as to avoid breaking things.
Any advice is appreciated. I planned on putting the most functional / stable ICS ROM I could find onto it, which I would imagine is a matter of some debate. Is there some really good ROM I should look at, like a "final" build of CM9 or AOKP for this phone?

I would start off by SBFing back to .602, just to get a clean start and root.
Check that everything is working then flash Recovery Using Droid 2 Bootstrapper.
I don't believe there are many Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs that are fully working.
I highly recommend Vortex Reloaded (VXR), though. It is a fully working Gingerbread ROM with excellent battery life.
From there, you can update ClockworkMod Recovery to the latest version using ROM manager.

[Q] Can we apply the Android system update (Gingerbread?)

The other day, my phone prompted me that an Android system update was available, to update to 2.29. That number is scarily close to 2.3 so I'm presuming this is Gingerbread?
Anyhow, the problem is, it can be downloaded but I can't seem to install it. The first step of the install process is that the phone restarts. The problem then is that it boots back into Windows, and once you've reloaded Android it's forgotten what the bell it was doing and tells you the update is ready to install.
I figured there may be problems like this, since the phone isn't running Android as it's primary OS. Does anyone have a solution to this, or is it just a case of waiting til someone releases a working version of Gingerbread and then replacing the Froyo I'm currently using?
First of all, 2.29 isn't Gingerbread. Secondly, it won't work because it's for the device that your Android build is emulating, not a HD2. Just forget about it. Your only updates will come from here.
So yeah, you pretty much said that yourself

[Q] .605 OTA root Questions

I had recently updated from Rooted .596 to .605 OTA.
Previous History:
Rooted Froyo - Bootstrap, Loader, and superuser.
Then upgraded Froyo ->.573 gb root leak (Kept for 1 year)
sbf Back to froyo 2.340 and then sbf to .340 (.596 build) (2days ago)
Currently: .605 OTA (I still have bootloader 30.04, Not Entirely sure why)
Goal: Gaining .602/.605 root and modding to Vortex Rc1.
I had recently tried the one-click rooting D3 (Psouza4's 1 Click Root) which was said to work for the DX.
When it goes on the first step to restart my phone, my phone goes straight into bootloader. It seems to get stuck there because it says it Waiting for Phone to restart. Which is step 1.
What should i do from now? Should I enter bootloader and sbf back to .602 and then try One-Click Rooting again?
My main goal is to have root and gain clockwork mod recovery and then intall Vortex rc1 for .602/.605. Unless someone recommends anything beter.
Also I have no idea whether my phone is considered deodexed or odexed.
I am new and can upload pictures if needed.

First, try running a factory reset in recovery, and if that doesn't work, SBF that thing.
rootzwiki . com/topic/5307-guide-root-or-unroot-your-droid-x/
(remove the spaces, it won't let me post external links until I have "approximately eight posts")
In summary, look up "Pete's Motorola Root Tool" (I believe it's the one I used, long ago). There's instructions for other operating systems in there too if you're on a different OS.
wiki . rootzwiki . com/Motorola_Droid_X is another decent source of data. After you root, I assume you're aware of how to install CWM, and from there you're set! I would suggest making a nandroid backup before flashing any new ROMs.
While I love and respect XDA forums for their awesome content for android, they are very greatly lacking in DX support, I would peek around rootzwiki a little, as that is where most of the DX developers post their stuff (as far as I can tell).
As for your phone being deodexed/odexed, if you don't know, then it's odexed. That, of course, will be fixed with any ROM you install, though you can simply install a stock deodexed rom if you want. Being odexed is hardly an issue though, it's a very small performance drag, nothing compared to the general bloat of stock DX apps.
As for what you should install, Vortex is a pretty solid stepping stone, very popular, and ridiculously stable with great battery life. I would suggest testing the waters with Liberty/CM7/MIUI/CM9/AKOP/Rubix(when it comes out)/anything else you can find. Liberty/Rubix/Vortex are all very similar, with subtle, mostly thematic differences, you should definitely go through them. CM/MIUI/AKOP are all 2nd-init (I believe, but that's a story for another time anyways) and come with tons of random/awesome features, but sometimes at the cost of others (camera quality [if it was even an option] was the biggest "flaw" in my opinion). I hope this is helpful and isn't too rambly.
Best of luck in your endeavors, and don't forget nandroid backups, and keeping SBF handy just in case. Let me know if you encounter any other errors.

[Q] New Droid user, looking to install a ROM

Hi folks, I'm new to this forum/site, just looking for a few pointers. I've been using a BlackBerry Curve (8330) since 2008- it's been a great phone and hasn't ever significantly let me down. However, I was given a phone about a year ago (Verizon Motorola Droid Razr M, XT907) and it's just been sitting in a closet here since I got it. Decided to finally get with the times and would like to start using it, hence why I'm here.
I'm wanting to put a custom ROM on it, though really don't know where to start. There appears to be several different ones, not sure how each differs from the next. I have experience installing a custom OS on my BlackBerry but am completely in the dark with Droid phones. Came across a few sticky threads on how to go about installing ROMs and such, just looking for suggestions at this point I guess.
I reset this Razr M to factory stock- twice just to be sure. My main goal is to remove all the unnecessary bloatware that comes pre-installed on this thing (if possible)- Amazon Kindle, Amazon MP3, Audible, Backup+ Media, NFL Mobile, etc. I won't be using about 75% of the preinstalled applications.
The phone as it sits in front of me-

So, my question(s) are mainly- Does it matter which version I'm running in order to be able to install a custom ROM on here?
Would like to eventually root this, though not a priority at the moment. Is it required to be able to put a custom ROM on it?
I see KitKat being mentioned often along with JellyBean and Ice Cream Sandwich, something or other. No idea what any of those are. Could someone elaborate a bit?
Thanks much in advance, apologies for being the n00b.

to install a custom rom you need an Unlocked bootloader and custom Recovery like TWRP

Installing a Custom Rom will be installed over stock, and will not contain bloatware.
If you just want to remove Bloatware, all you need is Root access.

Stock vs Lineage ROM

Considering modifying stock HTC 10 with Lineage. I don’t use Google. Unfortunately that’s tied to Pay by phone. The only feature I miss. Other than that what benefits do people find going through the root/install Lineage option? Sprint makes it difficult due to firmware, but I can deal with that if there are enough payoffs. Reasons to install Lineage these days?
I love using LOS and it is the pinacle of ROMs for any phone. For Sprint and HTC there are a few different options that you can use with this phone. However if you are new to phone modding and rom flashing, I would approach this topic gently and start with something more fundamental. OMJ makes great stock roms for your phone that you may want to try flashing first just to learn. Moving to lineage os will take quite a bit more knowledge and practice with ROM flashing and phone modding. You will have to have sunshine first of all and you will have to have modded your firmware to go straight to LOS. If you are comfortable with those things, LOS 15.0 for example will take the stock rom size of 3.2gb down to about 450mb for a bare bones aosp stock rom. I love LOS and it is where I want to be with my devices for unbloated roms without any bloat. They are fast, snappy, have great battery life, unlocked tether, and you will reap the benefits of having a bloat free rooted and unlocked device without all that sprint spamware. Using a tool like magisk or xda on a pure android phone unlocks tremendous potential and many options for your device like audio engine mods, theming, gps spoofing, the options are limitless. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will do my best to help.
Well, I'm not new to flashing ROMs. Would i still be able to use Pay? I realize i'd need a slim version of Gapps. This is the only feature i'd like to keep. I don't use it, have used it and it's quite useful in case i lose my wallet. Know what i mean?
I mean, i've done quite well without Google. Here's my apps...without ever logging into a G sccount.
Well, I've taken the first steps. Unlocked bootloader, Installed TWRP and rooted. Seems phone makers have made ROM installs more complicated these days. What's a good source for getting around the firmware issue on these sprint phones when installing Lineage? Is there a good solid tutorial? I mean, the Lineage OS site is good, but points out the firmware issue and says to search XDA. I can't seem to find a simple tutorial on that aspect. Thx.
Oh, also... I'm no longer on Sprint with this phone. I've had them unlock the sim and I'm on Simple Mobile. Does that make a difference? Is this still considered a Sprint phone as far as flashing goes?
OK, I installed Lineage OS. Weird that Oreo version isn't available. Anyhow. Everything seems to work fine except home button/Reader. Not a deal breaker as onscreen buttons work fine. Is this because I'm on different firmware? I'm on stock Oreo firmware?
Great to hear that your making progress with no hiccups. I'm just patiently waiting for the Pi update for lineage on this device. Now if you want root, you can flash magisk and even start playing around with substratum to do some theming!
Thanks. Does your home button/reader work?
I guess the issue could have been avoided if I'd RUU'd back to N before installing Lineage. Are there any other issues I might have? If not, I can live with onscreen buttons and wait patiently for Lineage on Oreo update.
Well, that didn't last long. I was getting the dreaded password upon entering recovery. When backing up I noticed could not mount data. So I've taken the plunge and installed unofficial lineage for 8.0. Seems okay. Got my home button and fingerprint reader back.

Hahaha
Well, I'm back on Official 14.1
I need my speakers and there are too many crashes for me to use 15.1 as a daily. I do understand that 15.1 is not even beta yet. That guy has obviously done quite a bit of work. Nice to see the HTC 10 has not been forgotten.

Is it worth upgrading from 7.1.1?

I spent a good few years rooting my Android phones, installing ROMs, etc. Quite a while ago I stopped, due to being pretty happy with the performance of this phone, and lack of time/interest in doing it any more. Consquently my phone is running 7.1.1 and ony has a security patch date of September 2017
I realise this is not a good state of affairs. I'm not a coder or anything like that, and I've forgotten most of what I learned about the specifics of this phone a long time ago. If I want to install a new ROM, it's going to mean a lot of reading to bring myself back up to date.
So, aside from my dire security situation, is there actually anything that is going to make my life better by installing an Android 9 or 10 ROM, over and above 7.1.1? Or is it just window-dressing? I'm looking to keep this phone for a while longer yet, and have just ordered a new battery for it, so I thought a software refresh might also be nice. I just wondered whether anyone wanted to offer an opinion on whether it's worthwhile, given it will involve a lot of work for me since I'm so rusty!
Why not just upgrade to stock pie and wait for the Android 10 update coming next year. You don't need to root to get more up to date software.
I've decided it's not worth rooting anymore because I want working Google pay, no bugs, etc. There isn't really anything I need root for and the stock oxygen os is perfect in my opinion.

Just re-read my initial post and I wasn't clear. My phone is rooted/ROMd already. This is why I'm so far behind with software updates, because I got sick of flashing updates all the time. I have a couple of apps that require root, such as an ad-free Youtube with background play (which I'd really like to keep), and Titanium Backup. Aside from those, my phone doesn't really need to be rooted I guess.
I pay a monthly fee to have those features on YouTube. I couldn't go without background play anymore. I would almost root just for that.
As far as if it's worth it, security updates are probably a good idea. I don't recall any major things that Android 9 has that 7.1.1 didn't when I first got the phone a couple of years ago.
I have my banking info to worry about though so I stay stock and keep updated (over the air updates the easy way).
setspeed, I don't know what ROM you are rocking there but for me, on official, pure Oxygen OS I don't find it at all hard to update:
- I download the ROM, Magisk uninstaller, latest Magisk, latest TWRP (I noticed that some blu spark version works best with decryption).
- boot into TWRP
- flash ROM, magisk uninstaller, Makist, TWRP
- boot into sys and re-download whatever Magisk modules I had installed
OxygenOS is only updated every month or so, this procedure takes 10 - 20 minutes at most, so this is not really too much for me to do.
I cannot pin point you the exact big improvements being introduced since 7.1.1, but you can trace the important ones on Wikipedia.
On another note, not having security updates since September 2017 is like walking in front of the shooting range and expecting not to get shot.

Man, i'm basically in the same situation and i make a post just today for the same reason. I want to update and unroot. What can i do? i'm at oreo 8.1.0 and os 5.1.1. Maybe is better first lock the bootloader and then make the OTA? but even if all go smooth which i doubt, how can i restore my backup without titanium without the root? is a f...ing mess
Just dirty flash the latest Oxygen OS (full zip). Then wipe the cache and you should be good to go. That's basically what I've been doing for quite some time with every update (plus Magisk).

that's probably the worst suggestion i've ever heard. You suggest to dirty flash from nougat/oreo to pie and do it straigh away...maybe even with a twrp 2 years old. Sounds good man..then i good to go..to a store and buy a new phone
