[PROJECT]Digging into WP8 Emulator - Windows Phone 8 General

Hello XDA members!
I installed the leaked WinPho 8 SDK, and (as OndraSter said in an another topic) the ROM images are VHD files.
Currently, I can only open and mount Flash.vhd. The other 3 is not valid VHD.
I have found lots of REG files inside this and will try to unlock, but there is a tons of reg.
Found changes from 7.5:
There will be new ring- and alert tones
Power Point Presentations can be view in Portrait mode
Windows Live renamed to Microsoft account in account manager
If you set password you:
dont get a new "window" to set the password, just expand screen downwards
you can show the typed caracters

Charging while turned off?
I found some interesting files in boot partition:
battery_100.bmpx
battery_255.bmpx
battery_500.bmpx
battery_755.bmpx
battery_1000.bmpx
battery_charge_normall.bmpx
battery_errorr.bmpx
battery_inside_empty.bmpx
battery_plug_100.bmpx
battery_plug_255.bmpx
battery_plug_500.bmpx
battery_plug_755.bmpx
battery_plug_1000.bmpx
ffuloader.bmpx
mobilestartup.exe
pluggedin_battery_loww.bmpx
resetphone.bmpx
resetphone.exe
unplugged_battery_loww.bmpx
I live in a strong suspicion that new Windows Phone 8 devices can be charge without booting complete OS (becouse of EFI, maybe).
I cannot open bmpx files, becouse I could not find any program to do this.

I have no idea what is this.

They are actually valid, those are differencing disks images and Flash.vhd is a parent for them.

Can you share how exactly you did the setup

Sorry for that trouble. I can confirm ONLY that vhd-s are okay. So I can mount it. But I don't think they are usable with virtual pc

Finally, I can start the emulator (do not ask how )
I will modify the first post to tell the (maybe little) differences between 7.5 and 8.

Good Topic
I hope the experts can find more changes and inform us the new changes coming with Windows Phone 8. I doubt there will be anything substantial to inform by Microsoft, although I am expecting some surprises.

You can run flash.vhd in VirtualBox, by setting the guest OS to Windows 7 and upping the graphics memory and enabling 3d + 2d graphics acceleration.

ie shortcut sync
any sign of sync of ie bookmarks to Skydrive to then syc with desktop; also sync of recent web history?

Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift

Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:
Pawel062 said:
hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again

So Any luck running/installing any other programs on SnapVue?
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

HINT ! - Access WinMo from Vista side

Just a hint for all the real developers out here.
in the Vista Part, one can click a button to "install SSL certificate to WinMo-side"
It's done via a button that can be accessed from Vista Communication Manager (Shift soft-key upper right corner, press advanced settings)
What happens there is that Vista connects to the WinMo side without setting up an ActiveSync connection. It has file access. It installs a certificate in WinMo.
So.. there's a CALL there that actually has access from Vista to WinMo.
Maybe people can dissasemble that part and do something really good with it ?
There IS access from Vista to the WinMo part without ActiveSync running.

please read more threads before posting one
my enter bootloader app (i posted a thread on that) accesses the WM part just fine without any activesync.
that happens through the EC driver (stands for Embedded Controller). you can do quite a lot with the EC driver (from changing various settings to getting ROM version, entering bootloader is just one of those things). though i would think that file sending works a bit different, but interesting, i'll look into that.

I should do better posts... I knew about your tool.
I just want to say that without ANY hacks whatsoever, there IS a connection between Vista and WinMo at "file transfer" level. Just like the hint I gave about the microphone.
I'm not a developer. I try to help guys like you with some remarks. A factory clean Shift does filetransfers via that button, somewhere my "gut" told me I should post about this , as I haven't seen any post addressing this "option" Hope you use it to our advantage.

update
I tried to send some files over to snapvue using this option
the progress bar completes, then vista says cert install failed. the files are not there in snapvue.
what kind of sertificates you tried to send to WinMo-side? Could it be traced what happens when you run this command?

not true certificates, mind you, I wanted a way to avoid using a sim card to send usbtool over.
what happens is probably the shagcontrol (yeah, I mean the shift control center but this name is funnier) starts communication over crappy udp protocol with winsock2 (1 try out of 5 failed to fully send and in general was very slow) to EC driver then somehow magically the bytes get sent over to WM. probably the WM IPC driver is responsible for receiving, no idea, haven't checked this yet specifically.
update though, if you create a folder named Certificate under Windows/Settings, shagcontrol will report that the transfer was successful and that you should switch to SnapVue to finish installation. bad luck though, SnapVue *****es about the cert not being valid, and I don't see the file anywhere (probably gets deleted automatically). I heard someone was able to get their hands on a file transferred in such a way but no idea how.
Could it be possible to create service that watches this sertificates folder and creates automatically copies of new files to somewhere?
I think that this sertificate tool is made for administrators and those sertificate-files are not meant to stay on any folder because then user could easily copy those sertificates to other devices. So there is possibility that we can not transfer files this way but maybe using same route to destination.

service, OK, the problem is you'd have to get the service onto the shift somehow.
what I wanted was fully eliminate the requirement of a sim card and usage of gprs/hsdpa to copy the usbtool over
though I guess if you really want that you can abuse the shared internet connection for file sending in the way danielherrero discovered, *but* not sure if that works with an invalid APN.
right, it gets under \Temp as user.cer, sometimes.

Omnia 7 as a portable USB drive

- Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
- Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB (and not the other ControlSet01 or 02 if you have them) and then search for ZuneDriver.
under VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00
In Device parameters
- Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1 <- this enable Windows Explorer to show the device when pluged in
- Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
- Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1 <- this enables Windows Explorer to detect the device
Plugin the phone to pc, close zune and The result will be this:
(sorry for my bad English)

Haven't tried this hack myself but with the zune software I think it's not really necessary and quoting once again joe belfiore:
"Windows Phone is not a mass storage device. It’s a Zune device. The data on the phone must be consistent, and needs to be able to identify items in storage. We don’t want the user to have to do that stuff manually. Yes, some may want to. But we wanted a synchronization system that was simple and easy and does metadata mappings automatically"

I have absolutely no problem with it, sync is working perfectly and it's something different at least compared to mass storage where you need to copy all data "manually". Nevertheless microsoft will probably implement a way to use WP7 also as such a device.

i do. i want to be able to transfer any file to/from the device. zune software can't help me, because it accepts just a few file types (like media and pictures).
what if any applications need to use files of a certain type? how can i supply it with files then?
i just don't understand.
I have a problem with it too. I don't use Windows on my PC, I use Ubuntu, so cannot use the zune software!
Either MS needs to realise that they can't force people to use their OS or at least give people an option.

most likely an app that needs such files knows very well that it can't get them over zune, and provides the way to feed it (most likely a cloud solution, or something).

I HAVE tested a nice tool . you can get in Windows store :
search for:
Pocket File Manager
it is a real file Manager.... some less fuctions are missing but it is very very nice.. and all they have told me it is impossible.... it is possible how you can see it
it works fine and great .... it can follow: send every file by Bluetooth... you can open every file it is legal docx, rar, zip txt . jpeg, mp3 , mp4 ... realy legal ... it opens what is on the device! !!! and you see a great file structure and you can use skydrive........ everyone who says it is impossible im think that they doesn't try whats possible ...
I have find somtehing interessting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290261
maybeee it should us help to get a Explorer to wp8
Have you looked at the description? It is limited in exactlly the same way as described around here all the time.
Limitation (Please read it!):
Windows phone has some limitations which prevent third party applications from accessing parts of files system. You cannot access video files, music files, Document folder. So, until Microsoft open it, please do not ask us to implement this feature. It is impossible right now.

It can access SkyDrive, FTP servers and it's own private storage. You CAN NOT access the phones Documents Folder and other Folders. You can launch an Office Document and edit it but it will then be saved to the Office Hub and the Explorer Application will still retain the old version prior to editing.
So while this does look like it works around it a file explorer in the way that people are demanding is still not possible.

i have tested the tool ! and it works .... it reads out some lokal files and the complete Photo and Video library!! it is a tool for lokal the link in the link it is development of it that will be release in future
but that what im testing it works everything what im saying.. and it is a file Explorer for local and for skydrive!!!! as i tested some other tool too ... it is a pdf Reader... not the Microsoft one! another one ... it can be read out the pdf files of sdcard and on local phone ... .. so im think it is possible to do a great file Explorer but we have to try it..
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/file-explorer/
Oh boy
I wish it were trued, but it aint.
Second, what Stevie said.
presumption
im think we can use one trick ... srry im not a guy who can much develop
but the idea is maybee great?
if i can Open a file of the Folder of the pocket Explorer so maybee Folder Pocket Explorer\docs\Alice in wonderland.docx in word mobile 365 /15 opend it ... but the Office hub can't find the file if im opened...... but in the functionality it opend................ im think the "lock" isn't realy a lock....... im think it is something like a key in the Windows regestry of wp8 ...that disable the Show of other Folders... but every tool can be Access all the Folders that are on the phone...... if it was a real access lock it isn't be possible to open a docx file in word from a Folder outside it is registered in Office hub ... in the tool it is added the photo hub ...
im think a clever developer shouldbe can solve the Problem without to Bypass the "lock" of MS ... Note ... In Real Windows 8 it has security informations .... but if the locked for some users you can't see the files and you can't opend it.... but im think in wp 8 there isn't this the Problem ... the Problem is it disabled in the regestry to Show something that can be accsess all the Tools
No the developers can't bypass this, as far as I am aware. It isn't just the registry key (you may be right about that one), but the runtime itself does not allow these kind of things. I have been looking for way to break the file associations, and there seems to be none, other than jailbreaking and hacking into system settings.
Yep tested this one today on my new Lumia 520 and it even does not show the music folder -_- ... Stupid limitation from MS.

[PROXY] Nokia Fiddler2 Scripts for SAMSUNG and HTC - No hardware (screen size) limit

This fiddler proxy script will enable you to install all nokia apps with a few exeptions (they will download but not install : PlayTo the normal version, the beta version does work and Here City Lens, but Here Explore does install). I noticed Here Drive+ isn't downloadable anymore no matter which proxy you may use. Apps that do install but don't work on a Samsung Ativ S are Nokia Beamer, Ringtone maker and Nokia Camera.
First off, install fiddler2 : http://www.telerik.com/download/fiddler, open fiddler2, go to tools > connections and check the box "allow remote computers to connect). Close fiddler2 for now.
Then unzip the zip file in the attachment with the name of your phone's manufacturer and copy the CustomScript.js (remove the .SAMSUNG or .HTC in the name) to C:\USER\<your account name>\Documents\Fiddler2\Scripts.
Open cmd and type ipconfig, you want to copy the IPv4-address to your wifi settings>tab your Wifi station once>enable Proxy>Server/URL.
As port you use 8888.
Open fiddler2 again and browse on your Phone to Windows Phone store (not the website, but the app), type in Nokia or Here, and select an app you want to install and select install, when the store goes into Status (you notice that the app is trying to install), turn off the proxy and let the app install. Close the store and re-enable the proxy if you want to install more Nokia apps.

I don't have the hardware-ID of an HTC, so I can't make a fiddler script. If one could provide me with the this hardware ID (520170500 is the hardware ID for the Ativ S and 520170499 is the hardware ID for the Nokia Lumia 920), I could make a script which could do just that what you're suggesting.

That's because the HTC doesn't need a hardware-ID to install all nokia apps, tested with a HTC 8X and it installs the Nokia Camera just fine. You can try switching HTC for Nokia and vice-versa. And change this :
Code:
if(oSession.uriContains("Windows%20Phone%208X%20by%20HTC"))
{
oSession.url = oSession.url.Replace("Windows%20Phone%208X%20by%20HTC","RM-877_nam_att_205");
}
to this if you have a Lumia 1020 or remove this at all
Code:
if(oSession.uriContains("RM-877_nam_att_205"))
{
oSession.url = oSession.url.Replace("RM-877_nam_att_205","Windows%20Phone%208X%20by%20HTC");
}
In the Samsung script there is a hardware-ID of the Ativ S and the Nokia 920.
so would nokia camera now works with ativ s with this trick?

I can't install Here. But I did it many times before...
Has MS introduced a second verification when the application is "waiting" in downloads?
Just FYI, you don't need a script for easy url replacing, just type "urlreplace SAMSUNG NOKIA" in the command bar at the bottom of Fiddler

The script also replaces the device model...
BTW I can't use it.
interestingly enough, if I change just my OEMID from HTC to Nokia and nothing else, I can download Here Drive + to my HTC 8x without issue. I just did this after I reset my phone last week.
