3G internet in Germany (O2 or others?) - Networking

Hello,
in august I'm going for 4 weeks to Germany. I would like to buy O2 Freikarte for calling and being online. I have seen that mobile internet in Germany is expensive (in comparison with Slovakia) and have counting and rounding of traffic (Taktung) to next 10kB. So I assume that this would have significant impact and it would consume lot more data (for example if weather widget refreshes itself and use 1kB or less, O2 will count 10kB).
It seems for me, that the best pack for me is "M Plus": 15€/month, 1GB, 7,2 Mbps. But if I use whole 1GB earlier and I need to call via Skype, so 64kbps is not option for me, is it possible to refresh data limit at full speed for some price?
In Slovakia I have also O2 and I have internet pack for 11€/month and for this price I get 2GB data limit at 14,4 Mbps and then [email protected]/s. But it is possible to "refresh" whole monthly limit at full speed for only 3€ (when you use all 2GB and don't want to being limited by speed). Also rounding is to closest 1kB.
Or can you recommend me something else/better than O2 Freikarte and M Plus internet? Thank you very much

Hello kamelot.sk,
it must be O2? Then is the "M Plus" option a good decision. But if you need more than 1 GB in 1 month you should choose the "L" option because then you have 5 GB fullspeed. If you buy the "M Plus" option and you have consumed the first GB you have to pay 15€ for a new "M Plus". In that case the "L" option would be cheaper.
If you go to a big City you can look on eis03sn1.eplus-online.de/geo/portal/umts if your destination is in the orage narked zone you can also take e-plus.
When you want to take e-plus i would prefer blau.de The internet option with 1 GB cost 10€, the 3GB option 15€ and the 5GB option 20€.
I hope this is helpfull for you.
Sorry for my bad English.
Greez from Germany.

BCBO1991 danke schön
I'm going to München, so it should be covered by e-plus. 3GB Blau.de internet option seems good to me. So then I can buy 9 Cent Tarif and 3GB internet option...
Has Blau.de shops where I can buy SIM? Or it's only available via e-shop?
And what "Datentaktung" blau.de has? 10 or 100kB? Thanks.

You can buy them in München but it is possible hat you have to whait up to 24 hours until the activation is completed.
Here is a list oft shops where you can buy a card:
www.blau.de/tarife/9cent/aufladen/aufladestellen
The "Datentaktung" does only matter if you don't buy a flatrate.

Thank you very much for information and great advice. I'll buy blau.de SIM when I come in München.

correct me if i am wrong, but i think e-plus doesnt have real hsdpa - just 3.6 mbit/s umts.
I think Vodafone and T-Mobile have 7.2 mbit/s hsdpa.
I dont know if it matters to you, just want you to know.

Thats right, but they have hspa in certain Citys. For example Berlin, Frankfurt Main, Köln, Stuttgart and also in Munich.
On my last visit last year i had 7,2Mbit connection in Munich
Here is a link where the upgrade oft the network is explained:
mobil-surfen.eu/2010/10/eplus-endlich-mit-hsdpa-72-mbits/
Sorry for the link to a German website but i didn't Fund one in English.
Best regards from Germany

In Munic you have with all carrier a very good connection. T-Mobile and O2 are anyway much more expensive than Blau.de (e-plus).

Bad Advice
I have blau.de
You can now say thank you for whoever gave you the advice to take blau.de, and who did not read your post well or who answered when he doesn't understand English well.
I am looking for another operator, although I already have a number, and it is very annoying to change my number (if that is required), for the only reason that I have registered for their 1gb plan, and have used up all the bandwidth during the 1st week, and it is impossible to do anything before the end of the month!
It is not very smart to request your customer to wait for the end of the month to be able to buy a higher option, or pay more, almost as bad as answering to a post and giving advice while totally disregarding one point of the request: to be able to refresh bandwidth.
With blau.de, the answer is no. Even if you want to upgrade to the subscription that pays more, you have to wait until the end of the month because of these idiots.

Newbie q ref UK service providers - is one better / best?

Hello, I want to buy an XDA to replace my PDA & Mobile. My wife and I currently on vodafone ( joint plan, 200 free mins / pm ) until 14th April so considering either buying used and running the software you've constructed to enable it on vodafone, or buying new from 02 or going with a 2nd hand XDA to another network.
No real need to change her 'phone and have seen 2nd hand XDAs on e-bay at c. £140 - £180 which compares favorably with the purchase price new on a new contract with O2.
However, for UK only use, is one provider better than any others?
We live in the Beds / Cambs / Northants area so should be reasonably covered by all. Only Orange used to have a few flat spots around here.
Many thanks yr comments.
Regards
Charles
is one uk network better than another
Hi there, does anyone have an opinion as to which network is better than another ref calls and gprs, or are they all about the same?
We spend most of our time around the midlands london areas
Many thanks
Charles
Having left Orange to get an XDA2 with O2, I can only say that I've been disappointed. O2's customer service isn't a patch on Orange's, and the coverage is generally slightly worse (although this could be an XDA problem).
I wouldn't recommend O2 to anyone, but will move to Orange as soon as I can, once I can be sure I can get GPRS etc. working. I've never used T-Mobile or Vodafone.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks yr candid comments. As I'm currently with vodafone, I feel my 1st steps will be to buy an unlocked new /2nd hand xda to run on this n'work and see how it shapes up.
Yr comments appear to mirror others I've noted ref O2 cst svs being poor.
Thanks again.

A question about tariffs (UK)

Greetings All.
I am finally thinking of upgrading my ancient Nokia to a Magician. Taking tightfistedness as a given, as a UK resident, my question is what is the least money I need to part with to acquire a Magician? If on pay-as-you-go, price is easily seen. But I am a little confused about tariff options: I would consider a phone on a tariff to cost:
[handset price] + [no of months] * [monthly rental]
where
[no of months] = least no of months before I can get the contract cancelled
Unfortunately, I don't actually know what this last number is with the UK companies: is it 6 months? Less? More?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, including what buyers have found to be the typical "total price" as defined above.
Regards.
I have found u a sim free himalaya for sale at Amazon. I wouldn't go for the magician myself due to it only having 64mb of ram and the himalya having 128mb of ram.
http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y06Y2078550Y1436518/202-4701076-6303825
Anyway check out the link I have given you.
s1nn0n
Thanks for the link. Is the ~£370 mark the standard, therefore for the Jam? If so, do the tariff equivalents also level about £370 after minimum contract?
And since I don't actually know this despite having lived here all my life, what _is_ the minimum contract with the various phone firms (T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone, etc.)?
ive had the xda 2 and i have recently got rid of it and got the imate jam
its alot better signal wise/ battery life wise/ size wise/ faster/ better cam
id choose it anyday over the xda2 as its just too heavy and big compared to the jam
i brought mine sim free from expansys for £407 near enough
simple to set up on o2 payg online
Look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=15279
Contracts are usually 12 months. I have seen some 18 month contracts too.
the Jam's camera is basically the same as the xda II's anyway, I don't know why the Jams is so poor its suppoed to be 1.3MP there is so much noise in the pics they look worse than the XDA 2's.
As for the signal, the new 1.18 radio upgrade not only increases the signal of the XDA II so it's much better than before it also has increased the battery life by a considerable amount i've noticed.
Personally, i'd go for the XDA 2 any day over the JAM, I can't stand that they have halved the amount of RAM in the JAM compared to the XDA II. Size isn't everything!
id stay clear from the contracts and go onto o2 online pay as you go. 300 free texts, 1mb free gprs, works out at giving u 40mins of calls compared to contract and all for £10 / month.
sims are only like £5
So everyone who buys a phone from, say, O2 or T-Mobile absolutely _has_ to pay the 12 month contract? There is no option to, say, cancel after a minimum time and still keep the handset? Excuse my n00bness on this issue...
u dont even have to buy a contract with this one
http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y06Y2078550Y1436518/202-4701076-6303825
they are sim free. NO CONRACT! u can change phone and switch networks whenver u want.
just simply stick in an o2 online sim card for £5.
1.18 rom on the xda2 didnt do much for me still couldnt get signal at work
now i got my jam i got 1 bar all the time
camera quality is crap i the dark but with the new patch its improved daylight photos alot they look very clear now
and no the 64mb ram doesnt make any difference when you have a 1gb ultra SD card i use that for storage
128mb would be nice but its no problem at the moment
also you dont look like a fool with it to your ear no more lol
gaz
Agreed, s1nn0n. The only reason a contract idea is being entertained at all is the possiblity of getting a better overall deal on the Magician handset.

you have to usually have them for 12 months or sometimes 24months but you can pay the contract off upfront (pay the monthly charges all in one go)
yeah maybe.
but they are still expensive on contracts.
also the IR on the jam works just like an ipaq unlike the xda2 which doesnt do anyhting at all lol
look at the below link, id just put that in a sim free phone. works out much cheaper and a contract wont give u anywhere near the value.
THE SIM IS FREE NOW!!! lol
http://shop.o2.co.uk/cgi-bin/o2uk/j...Details.jsp?prodID=consumer:O2:TALKALOT:GROUP
urs must a been dodgy thn.
mine works fine.
Thanks. In that case I shall factor [12 * monthly cost] into the price. Right. In that case I shall now scour the other threads for where good deals on the Magician are available. Thanks for the XDAII suggestion s1nn0n, but I think until the XDAII evolves further, the Jam is for me.
I bought from www.mobilejoker.de with a 1GB SD Card (65 Euros), 40 Eueos delivery and 15 Euros Cash on Delivery charge and it came to £380.
You'll get the MDA alone for less from them or Ebay's German sellers.
seriously the imate JAM is pants.
the xda II also has MP10 on it now and wm 2003 se
there really isn't much difference.
JAM is smaller but xda 2 has more memory.
That doesn't sound too bad, 27. But what on earth is this 15€ C.O.D charge?
I agree with s1nn0n in that the Jam has less memory/functions/etc.. I have computers to do my work. The phone/pda is just for simple carry-around utility.

XDA mini S or Vario (o2 or t-mobile)

Hi
I've just ordered the XDA mini S on a contract from o2.
The contract is called online 100. I get 100 mins and 500 texts for £25. I've opted for the £5 a month option of an extra 4mb data.
I've just noticed that tmobile do a similar contract on the Vario. They give 150 mins a month and 600 texts for £25. But for an extra £7.50 you get their web 'n' walk plan which is unlimited data access.
I have had an XDA II for the last 3 years and loved it. Unfortunately it broke recently and I automatically looked at another XDA but I'm now wondering if I should go for the VARIO.
The main selling point being unlimited data access... that has got to be a huge bonus.. rather than £5 for 4mb from o2 then £1-£2/mb after that.
MY QUESTION IS.... What is the difference between the XDA mini S and the Vario and is there a good reason to stick with o2 and the XDA mini rather than going with tmobile and the Vario??
One last question is the VARIO II the same size as the original VARIO?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Nic Teeman
I think at that price diferential the only question is one of stupidity - 2GB per month for £7,50 vs 4MB per month for £5, having been a loyal O2 customer for ten years I am leaving, unless they wake up and offer a decent package - I would put up with 250MB per month (it would suffice) but not at their stupid prices, if looking at switching take a look at the vario-III, some people are reporting this device when switching networks for £60 - well worth investigation - Mike

Nic, There are no hardware differences between the two phones. The only difference you will see is the ROM loaded on the phone and the aditional software that each vendor include in that ROM.
Go for the cheapest plan that fits your needs.

[Q] Seems to have found the 16 GB version...

..but, am uncertain about the "validity" of this online shop.
Anyone have experience with this merchent?

there is no 16 giga version for the omnia7
Thats wrong. There is such a version - for example in Germany.
If this site got the 16GB Version is a different matter tough.
These shops have the 16GB Versions http://geizhals.at/eu/a582829.html
watch out for the German T-Mobile Branded Omnia 7. It's not released right now, we have to wait 2-3 weeks.
Not 2-3 weeks. I just got an email that the place where I bought it will send it to me on Friday.
Most sites on the Internet says 16th or 18th though.
Where did you buy it, the most shops i asked about the 16GB version said 2-3 weeks.
I bought it with a contract on an ebay store.
I guess thats not what you are looking for.
But on amazon.de there are for example a few shops with a delivery on 18th.
If you search on google you will see the other stores with 16th (I have doubts that they really get it delivered by then, but thats what they say)
Anyone found one outside of Germany? Also, are the German ones unlocked and usable abroad?
Starting to get tired of waiting for the Dell Venue Pro.

Yeah maybe compared to the 8GB but the PAYG HD7 is only £380 and also 16GB, even if you pay to unlock it you won't go above £400 .
I might have to wait for the Dell Venue Pro afterall and upgrade the SD card.

I've got the German Omnia and it is definitely not locked to T-Mobile, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it with o2
The phone has no hardware branding but software branding with some uninstallable software and a customized search within IE (instead of Bing you get a Google based Telekom search). The biggest problem so far is that the MMS settings are locked to T-Mobile and are not customizable, so I can't sent or receive MMS (for me, it's no big deal, but for some it is...).
Furthermore, you can get the phone from other stores as well: Geizhals (local price search) has an overview of several shops that have the phone and are also cheaper than T-Mobile. The shop with the lowest price (handyattacke.de) also mentions that it might be possible to ship to other countries, but you have to ask them ("Lieferung in weitere Länder auf Anfrage."). Might be worth a try

LOL! Thats pretty funny... No offense, but let me guess, your german was coming from google translate or something like that? At least you´ve tried it!
Was today in a T-Mobile Shop in Germany and was asking the guy there about the Omnia 7. He confirmed me that all the T-Mobile branded Omnia 7 which are sold in Germany have 16GB memory and are not locked... That means you just have to find a Online Shop in Germany who send it to Europe to get a 16GB one. The only things you have to accept are the mms problem, startscreen from T-mobile for 2 seconds and the T-mobile Search. But Im sure with the time somebody here solve that problems...

This device doesn't support UMTS 900 MHz which is a must-have here in Europe. All current phones sold here support it. Oppo is apparently not 100% prepared to launch this device in Europe. It's not as simple as take a phone that's sold in Asia and just sell it here, other manufacturers have variants for a reason or just make multi-band devices.

This is official info from their page:
http://europe.oppostyle.com/home/8-find-5-white.html (Specifications tab).
It supports 900 MHz only on very slow 2G (edge speed). And in Europe many carriers use 900 MHz for UMTS/3G so all phones support it.

Thanks for spotting that. Rather odd being as at least as far as the UK is concerned both Vodafone & O2 use the 900 MHz band.
Russian version of this phone include UMTS 900 Mhz support.

Must say I'm struggling to get a response from the CS team on the new euro website. I submitted 2 simple questions on Tuesday morning and no reply as yet so if anyone here can help with these I would really appreciate it:
1. I live in the UK and am curious to know where in Europe they are shipping from. I really want be able to order and receive the phone within a couple of days max and not the 7-23 days they say are standard. I'm expecting and fully willing to pay for this.
2. Does the phone ship factory sealed?
Any help much appreciated
