Help Needed - Verizon Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hi..
My company deploys a number of these tabs and has apps that we write and test. We are aware of the ICS push that is coming out and want to do some preliminary testing on our apps before it actually pushes from verizon.
I am able to flash root and do almost anything to android devices but seem to be having issues getting it workingon this Galaxy tab. It is a model sch-i905 with 4g radio.
I can get super user via many of the fixes but when I install clockwork recovery via the rom manager it kills the recovery mode. From there I have to flash the stock recovery/rom with Odin which restores the issue.
I need to get to recovery to flash a ICS rom so that I can test the app. Does anyone verizon users know of a working recovery version and flashing method?
Thanks very much for your help..

Although I have not loaded CWM on my Verizon 4G, there are many posts warning users not to load from Rom Manager. That CWM is for WiFi only devices. Check out this article: Root and Clock Work Recovery for 3G and 4G Tabs
Hope this helps.

Extensive googling pointed me to this.
http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/
Which has a working CWM recovery file that I flashed with Odin.
Does anyone know what the best rom is to use for "stable" ICS Wifi testing?

Few questions:
Do you have a 3G or a 4G device?
Did you try using the files from the link I provided?
How did you get ODIN to recognize your Tab?
I am waiting for Verizon to release ICS before rooting so I can have everything working on the device.
Thanks.

My Korean's not good enough, wife isn't technical enough and translator doesn't do a good enough job but on the first link I can't figure something out. The top part is his guide to rooting but at the bottom, S3-3G-RootingRom.tar. Is this a custom rom, is it the factory rom, just very vague.
Never mind... found it!

how i did it
Hi guys. thank you for this wonderful post.
I followed the instructions as under and achieved root. I dont know the Korean language but got a Korean model S3 3g. model SHW-M440S.
I first downloaded the files from [email protected] link above :
Rooting Korean SGS III (3G and LTE) - zip files and instructions (in Korean)
files downloaded were:
odin3_v3.04.zip
cfroot_recovery.tar
CWM_SuperUser_0.92.zip
First installed Odin on my PC.
Then shut off the phone and loaded it in download mode by Pressing volume down, Power and home (main key) at the same time.
I was faced with some Korean language text. i Pressed the VOLUME UP button and the phone entered download mode.
I loaded the file Cfroot_recovery.tar in the PDA section of ODIN and hit start.
The installation was successful and phone rebooted.
Once phone rebooted, i copied the CWM_Superuser_0.92.zip to the SD card of the phone.
I then shut off the phone
Restarted it by hitting the Volume UP , Power and Home key simultaneously.
Within the menu i selected 'install from SD card' and then pointed to the CWM_Superuser_0.92.zip file.
The file was installed. I rebooted.
Then downloaded superuser and titanium backup from the market.
loaded up titanium backup and it was given superuser access!
I have not downloaded or installed the
S3-3G-RootingRom.tar.torrent
OR
S3-LTE-RootingRom.tar.torrent
as i do not know what ROMS they are.
Anyway, i hope people find this useful. I am looking for an ENGLISH language only ROM for my Korean model SG S3. If anyone has any success with finding out, i would highly appreciate a post here
Best regards

I messaged the guy who runs Blue Premium website and asked a few questions. One I asked was are there any custom roms that we can use right now, like CM9? I know you have your Presto ROM but I assume it is all in Korean correct? He answered...
"PRESTO ROM is indeed in Korea, but you always CAN Change the System Language. Crazy kamui figured out that custom ROMs can be flashed onto Galaxy S3 - Korean version if you change the kernel section. However, CM9 and AOKP don't work that way, so don't try. Actually we're Testing Several Things to Korean Galaxy S3 to Port CM9."
So its seems for right now Presto ROM is your only one. Let me know if you try it out and give some feedback.
You guys/girls are awesome!
Sorry, been slacking a bit, but Ill update now!
I don't have my phone yet, so I have been a bit slacking...Im sorry
Ill keep up to date!
Links have been updated on first post....Thanks to p33k and sambauer for doing some searching.
I'm still curious how they know the rooting and ROMs work with the LTE versions, since it is not released yet. Maybe they have access to one....?
Anywho, if one of you try out the custom ROM, let us know!
For the Factory ROM and Kernel, anyone post the Firmware numbers for it so I can add that? Thanks!

Did you try and download the Factory ROM and Kernel?
Im trying to get the LTE versions now, but they are "img" files.....not .tar
***Edit
Hmmm, I just tried doing the 3G ones and they are zipped up files.
It is only the LTE ones that are .img files.......
This is strange!
Is there any other mirror link for download the I9300XXBLFB (4.0.4)? As hotfile regular download limit 30 minutes per download and my area internet is slow so unable to finish download.
Thanks

I used it on my Korean 3G model SHW-M440S.
It is not the LTE version. Also, i have not installed the rom. I just followed the steps as per my previous post , short of installing the ROM given.
I then downloaded Rom Manager and Titanium backup and both were given access to root and worked flawlessly. The only problem with the root manager is that i cannot install clockworkmod recovery as ROm manager does not give an option for my phone (it gives two options. 1- Samsung Epic4G and 2- Samsung GalaxyS i9000).
Thank you everyone else for the pointers. I shall await a little longer before trying out the PRESTO Rom. i do remember spending almost an entire night trying to fix up my Korean Galaxy model S when i put up a European Galaxy S rom on it and it wouldnt work. Took me a while to figure out the problem was that the Korean Samsung Galaxy was different than the European versions and their ROMs would not work on mine .
I have checked my applications and there are two apps installed one is called 'SUPERSU" and the other is "Superuser" . Only SuperSU is active as it shows titanium backup/etc in its app list.
I continue to ponder this issue till i solve it. Any pointers would be highly appreciated.
Yeah I had same problem with root manager. I just uninstalled it. I had backed up my Rom via cwm recovery after rooting so I hope I'm ok. Then we have the factory roms. Cwm let's u do all the things manager does but less friendly.
But I'm a newb when it comes to this just switching from ip4. Please correct me if wrong.

I have never used CWM, so I am not too sure what it is or does.
Im guessing it is a backup program?
sambauer, have you tried updating your superuser app?
Just go into the app and you should be able to update it no worries....I had a similar problem with my tab when I rooted it and just had to do the update and it worked like a charm. Just check out the menu within the app and update it.....hopefully that works.
A tip for anyone and everyone - only use ROMs that are built for our phones. There are always problems with ROMs that are not specifically made for the Korean Galaxy phones.
That being said, PRESTO ROM is made for the Korean 3G, it should work fine.

(or can you buy them unlocked online somewhere?)
And IF I do get the quad core are there any roms for it yet? I guess I should sit back and let the smart people figure it out and check back lol....
I rom ton's of phone's but I've never had a samsung or a foreign market phone.
Will it even function as a phone in the US? and if so on what carriers?
Sorry for the spoon feeding request but a clear reply to above might stop lots of new threads asking the same thing.

I can tell you what i experienced with my Samsung S2 which was purchased in South Korea. I frequently travel to other countries and used that Korean S2 without any problems with local sims from China, Pakistan, U.K. and The Netherlands.
There are some issues though..
1- any text message more than 80 characters automatically becomes a MMS.
2- You have to program your mobile number into the sim, otherwise before sending any sms, the phone also asks to fill out a 'from' field.
3- the Korean keyboard is ever present and becomes quite an inconvenience for some one like me who does not speak Korean language.
4- you cannot use mainstream ROMs meant for the same model of phone that are not specifically designed for the Korean model.
Other than this , all is well Now that i have purchased the S3, i am forever looking for a compatible international custom rom for it.
I hope you can make a better choice now more suited to your needs.

[Q] Help With JB Energy™ Rom

Just recently flashed a friend's phone with Energy Rom. The rom looks amazing and is very well designed. There are just a few issues that he is having and I have not seen anyone else experience these problems in the tread. (Too few posts to post there)
Her camera is not working and I guess her Hotspot gave her a "timed out" message. . . . If anyone else has experienced this, please let me know if you were able to resolve this and how.
Thanks!

Are you on the 4.1.2 update? If so you will need to flash back down to 4.1.1 kernel because the new kernel is not compatible with the 4.1.1 camera

Energy ROM is based off of the the 4.1.1 build, the latest update has the XT907 at 4.1.2. So if her phone was previously on 4.1.2, then flashing this ROM could cause problems as the previous poster mentioned due to the new kernel. Not sure if the developer will update his ROM any time soon (which I loved by the way, and keep checking his thread for any updates),
also, Energy ROM can only be installed via SS right now, and given that the bootloader has been unlocked, I believe that all ROMs will be flashable via TWRP/CWM going forward - thus making SS obsolete for the XT907.
Here's what I suggest though:
unlock bootloader
install TWRP recovery
try out the DeadRage ROM, which is based on the 4.1.2 build: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/17778-romretail-deadrage-v12a-05092013-412-base/
if you really want to stick with Energy ROM with working camera, then you still can:
flash back to stock (4.1.1)
root
install SS
unlock bootloader
install TWRP
install Energy ROM on Slot 1
backup Energy ROM via SS
move Energy ROM to stock slot via SS
backup Energy ROM via TWRP (basically making a nandroid, and this can be installed going forward as a backup)
uninstall SS
Thanks!

no worries - we all were newbies at some point in time.
I have not seen a thread dedicated to the stock 4.1.1 kernel, but I did find this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017200
my advice at this point is to backup your apps/data via TiBu (and then copy that backup folder to your mnt/external1 directory).
so that way, after you pick your ROM, you can re-download your apps from the market (I always recommend doing this as opposed to letting TiBu restore them), then you can use TiBu to restore data ONLY from your apps. I do NOT recommend restore system data though when switching ROMs (however, I do restore WiFi settings and bluetooth pairings).
hope this helps.
All worked out great! I appreciate the help. I ended going with Energy 4.1.1 I have that stupid grateful dead image stuck on first power up due to rage. -Annoying!!

[Q]Droid Razr M, CM11: help configuring PagePlus 3G

Hello all,
I bought a used Droid Razr M on ebay a couple of months ago...(xt907). Then let it sit around for awhile
I recently rooted and unlocked the bootloader, following the recent forum posts for the kitkat update.
Just today I then successfully booted into twrp recovery, and installed CM11. Then booted into CM11 - yeah! This is progress!
I now have the goal of configuring the phone to work with PagePlus (Verizon 3G network).
I have found a good toutorial at howardformums, but the toutorial is for ICS, not for KitKat. My understanding is that the radio files, configuration, etc, is different and won't work with KitKat
I also notice that CM11 has some configuration options for which radio, network, etc, within settings.
I'm trying to figure out the specifics of the following:
1) Do I need to use CDMA workshop with CM11/KitKat to configure any settings?
2) I'm assuming I'll still need a donor phone to spoof this phone as 3G on network?
3) Can I just use OTA with CM11?
4) Are there any toutorials for CM11 with 3G providers? Or any distros pre-configured for this situation?
I've made it pretty far...just looking for a little help to make it to the next step...looking forward to getting this phone activated!
Thanks for any tips!
M

One question, if you know: If I installed and configured ICS on my phone, would I then be able to upgrade to kitkat, and maintain the configuration information for my provider? Would KitKat automatically configure this info?

I honestly do not know as I'm a vzw 4g legacy plan (love that unlimited data) I don't really read the threads about gsm and other network carriers...

Well right now you've got 2 options.
1. I just recently found out that it's possible to activate a sim meid# and get calling/sms working through *228 but you need to get the meid from dfs.
This is for calling and text only data will not work other than wifi
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=15221091
2. Downgrade to jb 4.1.2. Fastboot flash the ics radio
And perform the flash as instructed on Howard forums.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=15126290
Once everything is working on JB 4.1.2 you can flash twrp recovery and run cm11 builds before 7-1 and kitstalk rom is supporting the jb bootloader as well

In short... No when you ota it'll flash/patch the radio and the only one programmable to page plus is the ics one. Thankfully it stayed compatible up to the last jb versions but broke on the kk update

What is the best rom to use for Page Plus/selectel compatibility or should you stick with stock Verizon Jelly-bean?
Any of the jellybean bootloader roms have been working great for me. On the kk bootloader roms you can't use the ics radio so the 1st link is the only option and it won't get you data
Thanks for all the info and help, I may go ahead and try using the suggested roms, links, etc...
*However*
There is a topic over at howard forums discussing the possibility that PagePlus may add Verizon 4g plans very soon...there is no official verificaiton or announcement, but supposedly this could happen as soon as August? I'm tempted to just wait it out another few weeks and see if I could just use a "PagePlus 4g" sim with kitkat....
....otherwise I'll use one of the older builds
Thanks!

I too am interested in that thread but then again most of the kk bootloader builds are more buggy than the jb ones right now. I'm currently running carbon rom from 6-30

So, just to clarify, even though the radio files only work for jb, I could downgrade to jb, configure, and then upgrade to CM11 up to 6-30-14? If so, I found this nightly build I could try the following file: cm-11-20140630-UNOFFICIAL-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.zip

Edit: misunderstood the question. Yes that nightly is still on the jb bootloader and the m8 snapshot is the latest/last cm11 build to support it.
Also the phone can still be programmed on cm11. The important part is the ics radio and it can be used on the jb bootloader no problem but not on the new kk bootloader

Thanks for the tip...I took a break, but this will help as I finally try programming everything in the next week.

Hmmm...I just tried installing the special jb radio file on two different CM11 versions: one was m8, the other m7, and with both, it failed. I'll try another with an m6 version, but I wonder if that jb radio file (X907_Modem_SM_BP_1139.000.32.12P.xml) will only install with the earlier official verizon jb version (4.1.2)?
I'm running it right now on pac 8-11 and have used it on just about every rom available for the razr m you say it's failing to flash? That's likely a bad download. Can you unzip it?

I can unzip it, and I'm using Xubnuntu as my OS. I tried installing it using TeamWin recovery, and using RSD lite...both failed.
Just tried downloading it again (from link on Page Plus toutorial), and installing again with cm-11-20140720-NIGHTLY-moto_msm8960.zip. It fails in TWRP almost instantly.
Should I be using a different build? Is there another file I should flash first? I flash the cm rom, boot it one time, then try to flash the radio file...am I missing a step?
Thanks for the help...

Download the whole ics fxz and edit out everything in the xml except NON-HLOS.bin and erase modemst1 and modemst2 and flash that via rsd lite. I'm not sure why your previous attempts to flash aren't working but it's not the rom.
Edit: I made this with nobe1976's flashback zip. It'll flash the jb bootloader jb kernel and a jb bootloader compatible twrp recovery and I switched out the jb radio for the ics one

I'm sorry I should have mentioned that was supposed to be flashed via custom recovery, and you may have to reflash cm11 afterwards

Custom ROM flashing on SM-T337V and SM-T537V (Odin)

I've been working on a custom ROM for the Verizon Galaxy Tab 4 (SM-T537V and the SM-T337V) but haven't had much luck flashing them to my devices.
I've been trying to flash the 8" version using ODIN after making customizations to the ROM (removing apps, etc.). This worked fine on my Verizon Galaxy Tab 2 7", but it doesn't seem to be working well on the Tab 4.
My process: unpack the system.img.ext4 and mounting it, then modifying and repacking, using simg2img and make_ext4fs, respectively. Both of these are made as 2400M size partition.
I've tried ODIN 3.0.9 and 3.0.4 and flashing the system.img.ext4 alone vs batched with the rest of the stock ROM files, but always get the error: "secure check fail: system" when the system.img.ext4 starts to flash.
Yes, these are .tar.md5.
Any ideas how I can get this to work?
Bump bump. Anyone have an idea about how to do this?
More generic question -
Does anyone know why it would be difficult to flash a custom ROM from Odin? What is locked down by Samsung to prevent this?
I was able to do this easily with the Galaxy Tab 2, so I'm trying to isolate what may have changed.

Most custom roms now a days are usually zip flashed roms. Probably has to do something with Samsung not flashing unsigned firmwares in which you can do so. I never use odin but only for cfautoroot. Thats my guess. Maybe it has to do with how the rom is built in order to flash it.

Thanks for the tips! That's basically the answer I've settled on as well, after lots of testing. I'm not sure why the Tab 2 would allow unsigned ROMs to flash, while the Tab 4 seems to dislike me repackaging the /system partition and flashing it.
I'm assuming there is no way to re-sign a ROM in the same way as the stock signed firmware, so I guess I'll have to explore flashing with a zip. In order to do this, I would need either Clockworkmod or TWRP on the device, right? I don't think it is available for the Galaxy Tab 4 yet. Is it possible to flash a custom recovery on the tab 4 that is meant for another system, or does that basically always brick it?

What size is the tab 4 your talking about? Sorry I only own the tab s 10.5 and both of our devices got ported to twrp. Not sure why there isnt a custom recovery for some tab 4 devices but there are developers in the tab s thread that ported cwm to the tab s. Maybe someone can build on for the tab 4? And what version of twrp are you talking about/ tab 4 varint? It probaly would boot into recovery is what I think. Sorry as I do not own the device or know any of the model numbers :/

It's the Verizon Tab 4 10.1" (SM-T537V) I've been thinking about porting CWM for my Tab 4 but I don't know if it's possible or if I'm up for the challenge technically. Maybe the S is similar enough to flash onto the Tab 4.
Would all the Tab 4 variants have the same recovery? Or would they likely be different?

I believe the recoverys should be the same as they are the same size and almost identical devices. If the recovery was built on the wifi tab 4 10.1 it most likely will work. Idk if it will though. People that on the tab s forums that recoverys for our wifi tab s work on the lte also. Idk. I think as long as they have the same chipset (exynos etc) and size it should he good. I cannot confirm this though and ill have a look at the tab s forums to see if it really does. Idk if it will.

Ok, good to know. I couldn't find any places where people were referencing using the wifi Tab S recoveries on the LTE / Verizon versions, but I'm probably just missing it. Any idea why the Tab S bootloader is unlocked / able to have a custom recovery installed? It seems like a lot of newer samsung devices don't have this ability. Was it through some workaround like a Loki equivalent? Thanks again for all the great info!

Only wifi and lte models such as sprint perhaps verizon and unlocked lte devices have unlocked bootloaders. I think we had custom recoveries because either from the firmware release or someone got their recovery. Img pulled for beanstown to port. We had root on both 8.4 and 10.5 inch the following week after launched and custom recoveries by ds troy (recovery builder for twrp) few weeks later. I dont know whats up with your guyes tab 4s not getting recoveries. Are your tab 4 chips exynos? Because the tab s have exynos chips. We have developers working on kernels and roms even though they dont own the tablet. Must be how much sources are availbe? Idk if verizon bootloaders are unlocked but sprint and wifi ones are.

So if I end up not being able to flash a custom ROM on this, is it possible I can just build a script to change everything on my ROM's system files using my root permissions? Not sure where to get started with this, since I've been so focused on the ROM until now. Maybe some sort of batch file run through adb?

you can do it via ADB, just make sure to issue the "stop" command first. you can batch all this with the help of "su -c" which runs a su command without interactive shell

Yeah, thanks! That's what I've been working on recently. Mostly just stripping out bloatware and changing a few things. I'll post the full command here once I'm further along.
I'd like to be able to change the SystemUI.apk but haven't been able to successfully deodex it yet (the deodexed version loses the notification panel!)
make sure you use apktool 1.5.2 and see what the results are
then try apktool 2.0.0 RC3 if no luck

Also, try deodexing with QuickDeodex, it tends to create good results for me. experiment with different Smali, baksmali in the tool's resources folder. sometimes you need smali/baksmali 2.0.3 and sometimes you don't. it's a crapshoot.

Did you ever solve the custom ROM challenge - or did someone else solve it elsewhere, please?
I can get one for $95. used but I only want it if it can be changed to a custom ROM with Google, MS, etc. bloat, spyware, etc. purged.
Thanks!
How can I get the file download

[T900XXUBOH4] Let's Root the New T900(12.2 wifi) LP Stock Rom

Hello all,
I'm determined to get root for Lollipop. I've seen several other Samsung devices that, like ours, lost root in the 5.1.1 update. These devices also have twrp working and attempting to flash root results in a bootloop.
Based on what I can gather, modifying the kernel by setting selinux to permissive should do the trick in allowing root to be flashed safely.
I'm setting up a vm right now, so I'm going to attempt compiling an insecure kernel in my ubuntu vm.
If anyone would like to test, that'd be awesome! I actually haven't made the jump up, so I figure if anyone has and would like to test, I might as well ask and save me time in dl'ing the firmware and odin'ing up.
Thanks

I just made the update, but haven't gotten to twrp'ing it yet. Here's the kernel. You actually need to flash it via odin as a PDA. The kernel output is automatically a boot.img, which we can't really install. So i converted it into a .tar which we can flash through odin.
Edit: It just boots right into twrp for me, it won't boot system
Remember this is a test. If something terribly wrong goes happen, I'm not forcing you to test this: IT'S ON YOU.
That means that we need a flashable stock kernel as well. So we can flash SuperSu and right after the stock kernel and we should be fixed. In a way the same auto root does.
After flashing your kernel I couldn't boot into system. But I am able to flash TWRP with Odin and boot into TWRP. So I flashed SuperSU and wiped caches. I flashed back self made kernel.tar.md5. But still couldn't boot into system. Just flash whole thing again.
Now with the second try TWRP sticks and I was able to flash SuperSu and flashed my stock kernel back. But now I have bootloop after the startup sound. B.t.w. I used SuperSu 2.46
What's next?
If I remember right, bootloop after startup sound means some of the files in your ROM are corrupt...
The device loads in this order: Bootloader, Kernel, ROM. So if it won't boot at all, then the bootloader is corrupt. If it only boots to splash screen but not boot animation, then kernel is corrupt. If it bootloops at start animation then ROM is corrupt.
In other words, it's getting closer!
Edit: @andrewnelson23 Did you download the kernel from Samsung Opensource? If so I tried to edit their kernel following the changes here https://github.com/glewarne/S6-UniKernel/commit/4e3880c912ade3468f3f42189acb1d8d205901fb but it wouldn't compile for me...

It hits splash screen and will not go further. Actually this is the first time I've just done a kernel edit so forgive my incompetence.
Yes, I downloaded from Samsung source. The sprint note 4 had the same issue, and I believed the dev simply used a few menuconfig edits to disable selinux and root checking. First up, I need to build a kernel from their source to confirm that I'm actually doing it right. Then I will only try removing the selinux(with menuconfig). If that works I will attempt disabling the root check stuff. If it doesn't work, I'll undo the selinux stuff, disable root check and see if that boots. We'll see.

also testers look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...test-root-kernel-t900-touchwiz-5-1-1-t3199349
An option that might work is KingRoot
Once you are rooted you can use Super-Sume to remove the KingRoot apps and replace them with SuperSU
Kongo Root doesn't work. I have already tried.
