[Q] Do you think Google will rotate the home screen? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got my Nexus 7 today and it's awesome, except for the home screen not rotating? Do you think Google will release an update to fix it or will we have to rely on a third party app?

Third party app is the best way to go.

Download Rotation Locker its free if you want Landscape

Use Nova Launcher. Not only is it awesome, but it does home screen rotation.

Yes, it is great.
Auto-rotate wasn't enabled to begin with so I had to go to Nova Settings--Look and feel--Screen Orientation and select it (just pointing it out to save people a few seconds )
Also, the My Library widget is still usable (I'm not familiar with ICS/JB launchers, so maybe other launchers support it as well?).

I want to be able to have the launcher switch orientation based on how holding it. Any apps for that?

need a different launcher...nova or apex are good substitutes

Its kinda crazy that the homescreen does not rotate. Oh well, at least plenty of options to fix that with.

Didn't work for me on the N7.

Rotation locker works great. allows any setup you want based on how you holding it.

I'm a fan of Nova Launcher and that is what I'm using to rotate the home screen.

No you don't have to. Just select the Forced Auto option and it rotates everything just fine. The only down side is it doesn't rotate lock screen.

Hmmph, that did not seem to work for me when I tested it last night.
I used the widget to select "auto" - is there another way to do it?
ETA: ahhhh... a long press did the trick, not a short press. Thanks!

Lock "lock screen" in portrait ?

Hi all
Anyone know of a way to lock or select an orientation for the "lock screen" in portrait mode thats compatible with ADW ?
i just read this at modaco:

Thanks for this, I had the same question...lol
Lock portrait with only ADW solved
You can lock it into portrait mode using only ADW, no external apps/widgets required.
I came across how somewhere here on XDA and reposted it here:
http://forum.pocketables.net/showthread.php?t=7317
to do it in adw...
hold phone in portrait mode
menu --> adwsettings --> system preferences --> check system persistent
that does it for me.
only thing is when you reboot... need to go back in uncheck it, then hold in portrait rotation and go back and re-check it.
Im refering to the lock screen not the home scteen, i want the lock screen set to portrait.
ADW can kinda lock the home screen but not successfully between reboots
anyone figure this out on the stock official froyo? its really annoying that i can now have a fully portrait phone, with the exception of the lock screen.
Widget Locker. It's a paid app but it does the trick.
I found that the most recent version had some bugs with the Streak but if you email the developer he will organise to send you version 1.2.5 which works well with the Streak.
i got the widget launcher apk installed and configured. i guess it will do for now but it doesnt feel very native. every now and then the default android locker will flash for a second. i was hoping a setting in build.prop would have it.

Have you asked the developer to send you version 1.2.5? Like I said, the version on the market is buggy with the Streak but I had no problems at all with 1.2.5.
Kris
so widget locker latest version will rotate lockscreen and lock screen slider, please confirm, on official froyo? thanks..
yeah i had 1.2.5, it crashed on me several times so i just uninstalled it. widget locker doesnt really rotate it into portrait, it more replaces the lock screen with another program, that happens to be portrait only, that you can customize to look pretty close to stock. i think i might wait for a better solution.

You sure you haven't been using 1.2.8? 1.2.5 works perfectly for me to give me a lock screen in portrait.
What exactly do you want anyway? Do you just want the lock screen in portrait or the home screen? Or do you want a lock screen that actively rotate when you rotate the phone?
I installed screen suite locker to replace normal lockscreen but old lock screen kept coming up too, so I downloaded no lock to disable default lockscreen completly.
Works just how I wanted it portrait lock screen no default lockscreen

Just download ultimate rotation control , enable pre app , set lockscreen orientation ( potrait ).
U also can use forced auto orientation for lockscreen, u can use your lockscreen in all orientation.:good::fingers-crossed:

I'd like to know if this is possible too.
Set Orientation https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.eyesfree.setorientation
Pull down the notification bar and press the screen with spinning arrows icon, it will change to a padlock once it's pressed.
I have my DPI set to 160 which puts it in tablet mode, and still the lockscreen is only in portrait. I don't want an app that locks the orientation because I'm still about 50/50 on using portrait and landscape.

The Set Orientation app lets you set it to auto, the lockscreen will rotate with the tablet.
This does work. However I use widgetsoid in the notifications drawer, and with screen krien. enabled, I can't adjust brightness. Just and fyi, but figured someone else must use this combo as well. The screen orien. also makes some apps tough to use in landscape, such as songza.

You could also flash a ROM like Paranoid Android which gives you control over what interface each app uses like phone, phablet, and tablet. This is probably not the solution you were looking for, but you did say any way to make the lock screen rotatable.

How do I rotate my home screen/app drawer with Paranoid Android?

Installed Paranoid Android 3.0+ and I'm trying to figure out how I can enable the home screen and app drawer to rotate. Any suggestions guys? I also don't want it to hog too many resources or have any bells or whistles with it. Just a simple app that'll let me rotate the home screen and app drawer, that will preferably launch at boot.

Is your rotation sensitivity good enough? I always have the problem of not being able to return to portrait mode after rotating to landscape mode; the only solution is to go back to homescreeen to return to portrait mode.

Double Tap to Turn Off Screen with 3rd Party Launcher

I've seen a few people mention reluctance moving onto a 3rd party launcher because you lose the ability to turn off your screen by double tapping but there is a way you can do this with Nova and or other third party launchers with gesture controls.
1) Download a free app called Screen Off from Google Play and set it up
2) Set your Double Tap setting to launch Screen Off
Your screen will now turn off just as if you were using the LG launcher.
Alternatively, and with no need for a third party app, just double tap the status (notifications) bar

Actually it doesn't (unless you're rooted maybe?)
Gestures that you can setup in native Nova do not include screen off.

Correct.....
The only way to do this is with a third-party app which I explained to everyone (thank you by the way for your thanks) in a different topic here.
For me, I just have xposed>gravity box
and go to nova sett.>gestures(need prime)>double-tap>shortcuts>gravity box>screen off.
DONE.

I have not been able to get the double tap gesture in nova to work at all. I've tried setting it to multiple different actions or apps, and no matter how fast or slow I double tap nothing happens. All other gestures work fine. For the time being I've settled with double swiping down to activate Screen Off.
Has anyone else had this problem with their G3 and Nova?

Look at my post above (post 6 in this topic) and click on the link I give.
This will take you to the topic where I mention what app to install and what actions you need to carry out in order to make it work.
Works fine for me. So far I have never pressed the power button on my G3.
Action Launcher Pro supports Double Tap to lock screen feature.
The problem I am facing with nova, apex...etc that I have exchange security enabled by my employer, all the guesters and third party apps that i tried is locking the phone with the Pin not just shutting the screen, the double tab on the stock launcher shuts the screen but does not lock the phone.
Did anyone find a work around using third party launcher or app ?
Thanks

Sorry Shortcuts
KK Launcher is pretty comparable to Nova and Apex, and it has native support built into it to double-tap your screen to turn the screen off. I've been using this launcher with my Nexus 5 for a while now and have been quite happy with it (compared to Nova). (I'm supposed to get my G3 later today, so I can't speak as to how KK Launcher performs on it yet).

I believe the latest beta version of G3 TweaksBox has a setting to get around the security features when using Exchange. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792242
Thanks a million, its working like charm, now i can use whatever launcher.
I have Nova as well and works fine just double tapping the status bar. Seemingly works better than LG'S...
Seams like there are a lot of different ways that everyone has to do this.
For me, I have been using Tasker to get double tap off with Nova Launcher gestures since the G2. Tasker is such a great app with about a million uses, I highly recommend everyone check it out. I have it setup to auto connect to different wifi's depending on my location, adjust screen brightness/ringer volumes depending on the time of day, and many others.

+1 for Nova. If you got the $50 credit, get Nova Prime (paid), although test out the free one first to see if you like it.
I like Action Launcher 3 better than Nova but the latter is as good as it gets if you want to set up the phone old school. Realistically everyone should have a second launcher installed off the market just to get the backup for a corrupt stock launcher. You don't have to use it but if the stock launcher is hosed Android will start the phone up with the second which will allow you to get through your day and deal with the fix later.
Perhaps someone else will flesh this out for you but the reason people are saying install another launcher may be because you didn't used to be able to rid yourself of the search bar without root on Nexus devices. Not sure if this has changed since I only screwed around with it when it first came out for about the 5 minutes it took to figure out I hated it and haven't looked back since. Maybe that has changed though...

You should download the screen off app and bind the double tap to turn off the screen. That for off and the fingerprint for on, you'll never have to touch the power button (but double tapping the power button for quick camera is still pretty awesome, so you probably will - lol).

You can use nova/screen on to turn it off and it doesn't require root. To turn on, you can use the fingerprint sensor.

Twice. Once when switching themes and once with an app conflict that hosed ADW. I normally have multiple launchers installed as I like to switch things up but it also comes in handy when the chips are down.

That doesn't make any sense. I've been using it for a few days and I've had no problems with Imprint at all.
Update: I take that back. So, I just played with it a little bit and you're right. If I power off via the button, imprint allows me to power on and unlock immediately. If I double-tap to power off, when I touch the sensor, it still asks for the pin code.
I personally like the Google Now launcher. I don't see what's wrong with the search bar at the top, personally. I'm not a fan of the newest skin they put on it, though. The launcher, as a whole, though us functional and minimal, which is what I prefer. Having google now with a swipe to the right is a bonus.
