(TMO) Preferred network settings - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

I'm still having a hard time trying to figure out why I'm not getting the data speeds I'm supposed to be getting. I've searched all over and this is my last hope. I'm thinking it might have something to do with my APN settings or my preferred network. Can you guys that are getting good speed results let me know what you're using? TIA

Is your phone saying 4g or is it saying edge or g?

It says 4g but I'm getting the same exact speeds as I did on my Sensation and they're supposed to be faster on the S3 because of the radio, right?

It may just be the area you're in. My Amaze (and SGSIII) are both HSPA+42 handsets and got faster speeds than my Sensation (which was a HSPA+ 14.4 handset). If T-Mobile hasn't turned on HSPA+ 21 or HSPA+ 42 (which my area just got a few months ago) you're not going to see a difference in speeds
To summarize:
It may be the network, not the phone.
Throwing bricks since 2008.....and proud of it.

It's not the network. Other people are posting screen shots in here from my exact same area getting 20+ consistently.

I'll be watching this thread. The speeds I get vs the coverage maps do not make sense. I'm in a dark green area with full bars and I get 2-3mbs lol. This area is supposed to have 42mbs too.

I get close to the same speeds, maybe a little faster, as i did on my sensation. im not in a 42mps area though, just reg hspa+

Well I went to olive garden for dinner tonight and seeing how it's right by the mall and main business area they must have better towers. Only 3 miles down the road but I pulled in 20+ easily. Guess most of the other places I go don't have as good of signal. Weird thing outs earlier I was getting better speeds inside then out. Like less than 1 outside but 9mbps inside.

Anyone getting subpar 4G service (Philadelphia)

my 4g signal is coming in pretty weak and the speeds i am getting are fairly slow. when doing a speed test with the evo and my old g1 my results are:
Evo 2,700kbps on 4g
G1 3,800kbps on HSPA+
I know HSPA+ is fast but i would would expect the 4g to be a bit faster, when i use my clearwire usb stick on my laptop i can pull speeds upto 17mbps. I even tried it in different areas around the city with no change. I know its still an emerging technology but i would like to see if anyone else in a 4g are has had this issue. any thoughts?
Ive given up on 4g and Im completely happy on 3g with this phone, saves battery too.
Ive gotten 4g signal ONCE and ive had the phone for a week, in a 4G market. Still love the phone just not buyin the 4g hype. I dont even call it evo 4g anymore, its just...Evo
edit::: in Hawaii (oahu) btw
I hear ya, 4g seems more of a novelty at this point. I love the phone but im tempted to return it and stick with tmobile for now.

Im right over the bridge in NJ and getting 2mb. isnt it capped anyway? its fast enough for me.
I'm around the philly area, and when I do get a 4th signal it will go from 2mbps to 5mbps
I'm near the Baltimore area and so for the most signal I have gotten was one bar and I hit 3500kbps but on average just the 4g icon is lit and I get about 2000kbps. Also when testing you should tether to a laptop because doing the test from the phone isnt very accurate.
I work in King of Prussia, PA and my 4g signal for the past two weeks has been anywhere from 2 to 3.5 mbps. Inside buildings it is worse. Just remember that when 3g first came out it wasn't as good as it is today. It just takes time for a new technology to become a great technology.
Im getting like 2mbps here in new jersey too...

I'm thinking the same thing. Did you port your number?, what happens if you did and you decide to go back?

I read somewhere earlier that Sprint was having a problem with the 4g network, a sprint rep told a guy over the phone (yes the are not always right, but in this case it seems to be something going on). Everyone around the US seems to be reporting similar problems with the 4g network.
I'm in Seattle, and when I do get 4G, it's about 1800kbps. In comparison, mt T-Mobile 3.5G on my N900 got about 3800kbps. So far, I'm very unimpressed. Might be taking this thing back if it doesn't get any better.
That being said, the 3G service seems to be very fast and responsive even though I'm only getting about 1000kbps.
as jus10 mentioned, sprints 4g is getting hit extremely hard. they were expecting it and that is why they have not crashed but theres only sooo much bandwidth. so with everyone saying 4g is bad right now, just use wifi for now haha.
we are basically beta testers for 4g. it has never been used in this large of scale. but anyways it will def. get better and better but hey anything faster than 3g is good.
im hoping it gets better cause it saddens me that tmobile hspa+ is faster. as i stated i can can pull 17mbps down on my clear usb 4g stick which makes me think they might need to push out an update for the evo.
I didnt port my number yet cause i wanted to try out sprints network before i commited lol.
also the 4g isnt capped on the down side, only on the up.
What are you guys speed testing with. Also you'll probably see 4g has big advantages on latency and upload speed. Doesn't matter how big the pipe(bandwidth) if the pump (latency) is too slow. Latency will make a big difference in voip and video conferencing. I suggest doing some video streaming comparisons vs. Pure bandwidth tests.

When did you hit 17Mbps & is it easily repeatable? I'd just test both back to back in the same area to pin point the problem. Sprint could have the HTC Evo at a lower priority on the network over the data sticks and hotspots.
I can hit 17mbps at my friends house which is about 3 miles from me. tried the evo there and still only getting about 3mbps.
Did a quick test today, 250KBps (2Mbps) down. Thats outside, cuz inside I dont get signal at all... and I thought that Portland, being the most mature city for 4G, would be at least better than that... as someone said above, I also given up on 4G. Tether 3G through USB and I get 140KBps to 200KBps down on my laptop, which is more that enough for emergencies. Otherwise I just use wifi in my house & office. Can't beat 22Mbps comcast connecton
That being said, atm Evo "4G" is just a marketing term, nothing more.
here in Vegas,
This is at my house in whats considered a spotty 4g area. I have noticed over the past couple days the 4G service keeps getting faster. On the first night i was only able to get 2.3 Mbps down.
portland oregon
3g 1.78mb/s down at best
4g 2.89mb/s down at best with full bars

Houston 4G connectivity issues

Greetings folks, long time no see
Anyone having a difficult time staying connected to 4G in Houston? From my experience so far, all 3 locations I have tried it out... (BB, Work, Home) are all in "In-Building" 4G coverage area. NONE of them can connect "In-Building". If I walk outside, it will connect then drop sporadically, or not connect at all. 3G has connectivity issues as well, but I want to focus on the big selling point of 4G here.
Any other experiences to speak of?
-Rock
Guess I should have posted this in the Q&A. MOD: Please feel free to relocate thread.
I have the same experience in the Memorial City (I-10 BW8 W) and East Katy (Fry) area. I'm happy with the 3g speed for what I use the phone for and have only turned on 4g for testing.
Im guessing it might be an issue with both signals from the towers and radio on the EVO. I have called Sprint to express my disappointment with the 4G service. I hope that HTC will make some magic happen with software upgrades. I also have tried the newer radio upgrade but still have issues once im inside of buildings.
just like when the iphone came out there were problems the same is happening now. i was getting good speeds up until a few hours ago here in NJ. my phone says 3G but im getting edge speeds
Not Houston, but same for me...
I am in St. Louis, and although 4G isn't official here yet (last I heard was 6/21) I am seeing the same thing. Indoors, it is almost a crap shoot.
Outside, it will get one "bar" of 4G... sometimes. Never really solidly locks on 4G.
I think it is an issue with the EVO radio firmware, at least I hope so, because I have the luxury of testing it side-by-side with an Overdrive, and I can consistently maintain a 4G signal of 2-3 bars on the Overdrive, if I put it in the window of my office.
Sadly, the Overdrive is seriously outperforming the reception of the Evo in my experiences so far.

I'm in Houston. After doing the PRL update I got great coverage, everywhere except my downtown office (15th floor...so thats to be expected)
had connectivity issues the first day, here on the Northside, but if you update your profile, prl, and take your battery out a few times you may find a change..i did
THIS NEEDS TO BE SETTLED! I think I have an objective view.
I'm in Houston, TX so we have 4G coverage with ClearWire. I got my EVO on Friday, along with everybody else. I went to Best Buy to look at some accessories, while I was there I was chatting with the ClearWire rep running the demo and trying to sign up new customers. He was inside with store with his Clearwire USB dongle and laptop. We decided to run some speed comparisons, so I downloaded 2 speedtest apps from the Android market, one of them being for Speedtest.net. The best speed I got on my EVO with 4G enabled (and 1 bar of 4g) was about 2.25 Mbit down, and 1.1 Mbit up. I ran this test multiple times with me standing next to him, then putting my EVO next to the USB dongle to make sure I was getting the same signal. The rep's laptop, again running the speedtest from Speedtest.net and us using the the SAME servers, he got at least 6 Mbit down and almost 2 Mbit up. The best he got that I saw was like 7.2 Mbit down. He said that earlier that day he got as high as 10 Mbit down.
This is just telling me that it's either the processor that is limiting the speed, or it's the 4G antenna in the EVO. I saw that his 4G signal was pretty good being a bit outside the city, in Katy at Fry Road and I-10. I live just outside downtown I do get 4G inside my home, but again 1 or 2 bars. With my limited investigation I'm going to have to conclude that the network speed is NOT ClearWire's fault, but more like a hardware limitation on the EVO. If someone modded the phone with a better antenna the speed might improve.
About the existing 3G speed and with EVO is WOW! 3G response is soooo much faster on the EVO that it was on my G1. Another comparison is my home AT&T U-verse: I get 5.71 Mbit down and 0.94 Mbit up. I'm trying to think of a way that I can get my TV another way and get ClearWire for home instead of U-verse.
More likely clear is capping us to maintain QoS for direct customers.

Hmm, I'm inside my house on Katy "Fry Rd. @ I10" and have 2 bars. Walk outside the front door no change. Typically outside around the Katy area I get about 2-3 bars.

Just a little upset for the reason being that Sprint would state that their 4G is 10x faster than EVDO. Taking the lower results of EVDO(600Kbps) and comparing it to the higher 4G(6Mbps). I have yet to see 3Mbps downstream on their 4G network in Houston. I have tested Clear's and Sprint's usb side by side and ofcourse it's only capped on Sprint. So on that point its not the same.

I can see that, but even 3G on this phone seems way faster than other phones. I'm sure it has to do with the CPU beign able to render pages much quicker than previous devices.
That said, my 4G speeds are averaging about twice as fast as 3G
Drove down 45 from the medical center to Spring yesterday and got 4G all the way. As far as the downspeed goes, I agree, it's probably QoS since Sprint's 4G network is still in its infant stage.

Thanks for this info, I think you are right, something is capping our throughput. I hope Sprint come out with new firmware patch to resolve this. I am not happy with my less than 2Mbit download speed on 4G!
Well, I wish I was seeing the same coverage as everyone else. I can't get 4G inside at all. I got all the updates last week, but see there is yet another PRL update I was unaware of. *Finders crossed.
I don't think wimax will ever have good indoor coverage. The frequency it runs at is much too high.

Since I work for Clear, I can tell ya'll that we do not cap anything. Also, as far as Sprint goes, they just use and resell our service. I will, however, be willing to be that there may be something with the device that maybe a firmware upgrade may fix but honestly who knows.
I have yet to see anyone get above 4mbs on the Evo...I think it has something to do with the device.

I'm in Dallas where hspa + is already available, but using three speed test app the fastest download speed I've been able to get is about 2.5 mbs.

I've been getting 2-3 Mbps tops in Boston, a supposed HSPA+ city, though I haven't tried all over town or in Cambridge. But I was in Chicago last week and topped 7 Mbps in one location. So I just think it varies widely with exact location. Probably all it takes to call a city HSPA+ is a few cell towers with peak theoretical speeds of 14 or 21 Mbps or whatever.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well, seems it' still not quite up to snuff in Houston. Best I've been able to get is 3.94 Mbps down (I saw that kind of speed on my 3g Vibrant).
After some phone calls and other investigations, I am thinking that their "4g" network isn't as all encompassing as the coverage map shows.
Accessing the testing menu, I can see that I am on either UMTS or HSDPA network, both of which are 3g (according to Tmo tech support).
So, just to make sure my phone wasn't the problem (was already refreshed on the network a couple of time by tech support and even did a master reset) I went down to a Tmo store that was shown to be in 4G coverage area and checked out a MT4G and G2. Neither of them showed connection to HSPA ot HSPA+.
So, dissappointing for sure, but I guess the phone was free (replaced my Vibrant) I can't complain.
You can call tech care with your speed test results and we submit a ticket to have engineers check it out. It's at least worth a try.

Contacted tech support this morning and they are supposed to check out the problem in a wide area.
My wife gets her MT4G Wednesday, so I will have another phone to go by. Obviously if hers sees the HSPA/HSPA+ network and mine doesn't I'll know it's my phone or a setting of some sort within.
I guess it just bugs me since the MYT4G and G2 I checked out also display 3g network connectivity in what is supposed to be 4g coverage area.
I'm in Salt Lake City where the coverage map shows 4g. I have gotten 3 to 4 Mbps speeds before 5 am. However, during the day, I'm getting around 2 mbps or less. My big problem is the coverage. When it drops from H to E, the browsing locks up. It:s like I get 3/4G or nothing. Has anyone else experienced this?
My AT&T Captivate runs almost as fast on 3G networks during the day, but it even gets just under 200 kbps on E. What gives? One of my employees has the MT4G also and find that E doesn't work either.

Going through the build.prop files, I notice in all of the CM builds, that the throughput settings seem to be inaccurate. I can only assume this is because all phones they build for aren't HSPA+ compatible. I'm no expert (as wikipedia is my source here) but according to T-Mobile's HSPA+ specs, we're to achieve up to 21mbps download and 5.7mbps upload on their network. In the build.prop files for the MT4G, our ro.ril.hsdpa.category is set to 8. According to Wikipedia, this category should be set to 14 and at a minimum 10. I say 10 because i'm quite unsure of the MT4G's radio capability and documents I've read seem to suggest the G2 (similar to MT4G) is only capable of max download speeds of 14.4 mbps (which is category 10). However, setting category 14 doesn't seem to impede download speeds, so I set mine to that- just in case. On the flip-side, the ro.ril.hsupa.category is set at 6, which seems to be correct in supporting our max theoretical upload speeds of 5.7mbps. There are other factors that have to be considered as well, such as how many users are connected to a tower at any given time. HSDPA/HSPA+ is a shared data-link, much like your home internet connections. At home, I average between 2 and 4mbps downloads. There are times (usually REALLY late at night or early in the morning) where i've seen 8mbps and once 11mbps download speeds. I'm not quite sure I would have seen these speeds with my ro.ril.hsdpa.category set to 8 as it is in CM because that would indicate a cap in download speeds of 7.2mbps.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and none of this means anything. Just food for thought.

Just so you know just BC the tower is within 30 feet doesn't mean its faster. Actually it will probably be slower; think of the tower as just the placeholder the signal is focused outward and doesn't beam down beside it BC usually nothing is right under it. When I had Verizon there was a tower on my roof at my apt but I had no signal directly below.

Sorry YOUR area sucks. 8-9Mbps here.
Of course Verizon's LTE is going to be fast, there probably isn't any traffic really going through it.

Yeah, one of 10 areas that Sprint actually had rightish. Haha. What I don't get is, Clear is here and they have upwards of 5 - 10, so why have I never seen over 2, and 80% of the time, don't get one? I'm sure they throttle Sprint's traffic.

I'm on T-Mobile pulling down 7.5 to 10mbps on average(MT4G), on my 3G Moto Cliq XT I'm getting 3.5 to 5mbps. Uploads for both are around 1.5mbps

I'd be perfectly happy if I got 5/1 on 4G.

Maybe your not in a real good area, hell on my 3G with 2 bars im getting 1.4mbps down.

Yeah, .5 million people in the valley (Boise, Idaho), and 3G has been 30kbps for months. This past week, however, I've seen 600/600 on 3G in a few areas, but then it randomly drops to 1x, too.
I've gotten 7-8 down a few times here but it's usually around 6. That being said, I can get 7 down on one server and .5 down on another not thirty seconds later. It all depends on the server and how many connections are between you and it. Closer is not always better either.
edit: That is pretty damn impressive though, Sprints definitely needs to widen the bandwidth or do something. I would love pings like that too...

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I think Sprint's servers are just f'ed up.
I know!
It went from about 11 mb down here to like 2-3.
I have seen 8-9 in town but typically at the house I see from 2-3. I live right outside of Austin tx.

i usually see 5-7 when im on 4G around here.
You sprinters getting getting 6-10 down: how long does it take you to load say engadget.com (full site)?? K Now do the same on strong signal 3G. What's the difference in time.
Here in Chicago the difference is zero.
Speedtests are worthless....AS IS WIMAX.
(Note: I get strong 3G here)

im not even going to attempt this cause 3G in my area is worthless at this point, were talking dialup speeds or less lol.
Oh my that's fast. I could stream Netflix with my phone through my Xbox....in HD. So jealous.

Just ran 2 speed tests in downtown Chicago - full bars:
3G: .33 down, .23 down
4G: 2.49 down, 1.48 down
Yeah - that's premium data all right...

Anandtech's take on HSPUDA update

It almost seemed like every other test I ran would alternate between upstream throughput of 1.5 Mbps, and then 384 kbps, even in the same position. I took some photos of the Inspire 4G showing this behavior just a minute apart in an area with very good AT&T signal.

I am getting the same results. I cannot for the life of me get consistent >1mbps upload speeds.
I think it's fair to say ATT has the worst 4g network out of all the big players who are getting over 10mbps download and a constant 1 mbps upload while we are stuck with 1.5/300 with a max of 5/1 on a good run.
I'm using my phone around Seattle with the update and I can consistently get over 1Mbps upstream and about 3.5Mbps downstream

These are the exact same results I have been seeing, so I can relate. Either AT&T just has a crappy network (the most likely), or they have found another way to cap based on frequency of downloads/uploads. IE capping 75% and uncapping 25% to reduce overall loads on the network. Just my theory.

I get the same. SeaTown!!!!
Yea I agree we do have the worst 4g network, even metro pcs LTE kicks the *hit out of my atrix here in Dallas oh well, maybe in the future they will improve. Im getting about 6.56 down and 1.6 up right now in the late hours of the night and about 3.1 down and 1.1 up during the peak hours in the day, so its not too bad I guess.

This isn't AT&T's 4g, its just what we should have been getting with 3g all along. And the reason PCS LTE network rocks AT&T so hard is they just leech off Verizons LTE towers which actually have 4g enabled.

I thought Metro's LTE network was their own? As far as I recall they actually lit it up quite a bit before Verizon did?

Another Dallasite! I don't know where you are, but my iPhone 4 in the Park Cities gets about 5Mbps on average with 1.23Mbps on the upload side. My uncle's Atrix was just updated and he can easily pull 7-8Mbps at his house in Allen, which supposedly has less backhaul than Dallas. I know Plano is a weak-spot for AT&T speeds, however.
Also getting low speeds here:
3.5mbps down, 0.3mbps up

Me too, I'm gonna switch carriers when my contract expires next year. This whole Atrix fiasco is really getting on my nerves. Between the locked bootloader and crappy network speeds I've had about enough. It's too much to ask for the network to change so I'm gonna change networks and munufacturer while I'm at it. Screw AT&T and Motorola they both suck.
