Screen protector necessary? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for what is quite possibly a really dumb question, but with the Nexus 7 having Corning glass, is a screen protector even necessary?

corning glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof and not shatter proof.
the galaxy note has corning scratch resistant glass and yet many of us have managed to scratch it with the stylus that samsung included with the device.
so i would recommend using a screen protector if, like myself, you are easily annoyed by even the smallest scratches.
i already ordered 20 screen protectors from ebay, simply because i dont like having any air bubbles or dust underneath them. this way, if i screw up the first one, i have 19 more tries to get it right.

Quite simply....yes its necessary!

I'll be purchasing one when someone posts a good review on here of one they received

I hate screen protectors.
They never feel right to the touch and I can always see the edges which is annoying.
I've had several smartphones starting with the D1 when it was first released and other than the random very minor hairline scratch I've never had any issues with my screens.
Considering my N7 will never be pocketed (my phones live in my front pocket) there is even less of a chance of getting scratched.
This is just my personal preference.

Can't agree with you more. I used to have one for my Galaxy Nexus, but I hated how I could see the sides and air bubbles. I just took it off and it's been scratch-free for literally months. I also don't use a case with it, just goes in my pocket and it's been fine. Sure, the occasional finer smudge, but it's comes off. I'm also not going to bother with a screen protector for my Nexus 7. I have, however, ordered a case for it.

Thanks everyone. Now I'm off to ebay to buy some cheap ones....

the screen is the device PROTECT IT WELL
Skinomi or zag or any of the other brand name protectors work well. The cheap plastic ones will make your touch less precise and scratch easy. spend the money 10-15 dollars is not much to protech a 250.00 device. I have hand the skinomi protector on my iconia a500 since day one . the screen is beautiful and exactly as it was new.
now what about some type of slip on cover that has a build in two way kick stand that will rotate for horizontal and vertical positon.. I WOULD Love that. I do not want this tablet in a CASE. just would like a stand built into the back of it . Even one that would Stick on the back with maybe two sided tape or velcro. if done correctly..

The thing I hate about buying expensive screen protectors is that $10+ easily adds up if you have to use several of them to finally get it right. I hate getting any dust or bubbles on the screen and that is usually difficult for me to get right the first time.

If you're looking for a very good screen protector I'd go with skinomi probably spelled that wrong or xo skin. Xo skin
looks the most invisible when its done drying but will lift up easily if you put it too close to the brezzle. Skinomi is also very good there just less forgiving if you mess up putting them on make sure to use lots of spay when applying. Don't get zagg after about two months of me owning it it has a yellow tent to it and there more expensive then the both I recommended. Whatever you decided make sure to look up online for coupons the usually have some you can use and that my two cents hope it helps out.

I usually hate using them as well. The feel is just never quite right and this screen glides wet. The only ones I ever considered are the ones that give you screen privacy as well.

I am on my 3rd http://www.skinomi.com/ screen protector since my iconia. they give you a 100% life time no questions asked warranty. I have kinda long sharp fingernails and i tend to touch it down there the middle far reaches of thumbs keyboard.
you fax them copy of your recept with reason you want it replaced and credit card number. they charge you a small shipping fee. i think 3.00 and in a few days you get a new one in the mail.. send the old one back in a STAMP envelope 44 cents .
They cost more but cheap and easy to get replaced . They come with special spray to put them on with and can be removed cleaned and reattached. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO BUBBLES NO CORNERS Coming up .And i use my tablet i would 3 hours a day. everyday if not more on days off work.
You Truly get what you pay for . I have heard same type of happy customers with Zag and a few of the others so i do NOT Want to make this all about the one i have . p THEY SHIP YOU THE NEW ONE FIRST. you ship old one back after you change it out. i paid i think 18.00 for the original one.

This is asked often.

Scratch Test: Does Your Phone Really Need A Screen Protector?

Had mine for under a week, already a fine scratch 4 cm long.

Screen protector means you can be rough with it

I learn from the mistakes of others. I have two friends who didn't use a screen protector on a Galaxy Note and a Galaxy S 2. Both got minor fine scratches that can only be seen if looked for. They're desk jockeys.
I work "in the field" often off-roading to get to my sites and my hands commonly get dirty from fine dust and sandy particles. There's no way I'd use my phone and Nexus 7 without a screen protector. If a desk jockey can get minor scratches imagine what a finger with fine dirt swiping across a screen will do.
So my lesson I learned: spend the money on a good screen protector if you're OCD about a perfect screen. Over the years I've learned how to apply wet screen protectors on so that they're not even noticable. (Zagg, Bodyguardz, and Skinomi). The trick is to apply a lot of solution to the sticky part.

I ordered a KaysCase Screen Protector. They are made for the device and fit perfectly. They are almost invisible and feel just like the glass itself. I got it on amazon along with my Aduro membrance case for my Gnex.

No screen protectors foe me, ever. I'd rather risk and/or deal with scratches than have a screen with a protector on it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

I don't have a screen protector on my Nexus and I've been fine. I'm careful enough, and if it happens to pick up a scratch or two as time goes on, that's alright. I'd rather not deal with the protectors, I like the screen the way it is.

I'm not 100% if screen protectors actually stop smart case covers from putting the nexus to sleep/awake, because it ever since I put a screen protector on, the sleep/awake function doesn't work effectively.

anyone using these without screen protectors?

so its been awhile, we have gorilla glass, i'm picking up my replacement epic today. should I go naked this time? just wondering I know I read a while back that a number of people were going naked. did the screens get scratched? I've dropped my phone once or twice, but it does have a case around it.
just figuring why waste the beauty of the screen behind a cheap protector if I don't need to. but hate to scratch the screen on the phone.
I haven't used a screen protector at all. Screen is still flawless, but I also baby my phone. The only mark anywhere is on the plastic on the side when I dropped it in my garage. Ended up face down but not a single mark on the screen.
i Just put one on because it helps avoid fingerprints but the screen is really strong even naked
GHOST ARMOR !FTW!
Well I've droped my phone and nothing happend to the screen
But the only thing that is "kind of" annoying but not a problem at all because it common sense it will have it is fingerprints that's all the screen protecter going to do

Nekked.
Had a screen protector on mine but removed it after a couple months. Couldn't get over the better responsiveness! I put mine in my pocket and make sure it's the only thing in my pocket (no keys, coins, etc.).
Screen doesn't have a scratch on it.
I use Ghost Armor on my epic. Just feels nicer than those damn plastic sh*t you get from RadioShack and best buy
I have had mine gor only 4 months but I do have a really faint line in my screen near the top from droping on my floor screen down.

I go naked and have a plastic flash drive also in that pocket - which I try to keep on the back of the phone with the screen face down on my leg.
I have 2 identically shaped scratches about 2mm long, one deeper than the other. I can't see them unless the conditions are perfect...and can only feel one if I run over it with a fingernail. It shouldnt have scratched but something abrasive (like sand) must have gotten into my pocket or on my finger and I didn't know. It sucks, but I much prefer the feel of the real screen and will be upgrading in a year anyway.
So, FYI, it can get scratches regardless of how you baby it. Have to decide whether its worth the risk or not.
I use mine w/o any cover, but I do notice slight scratches on the screen. I can only see them with it off and held at the right angle, but I can see they are there.
IMO, it all depends onhow rough you are with your phone
Do you take it where it can get sand across the glass? Dropped into dirt? Rubbed around with a bunch of hard objects?
Tried an invisible shield but couldn't stand the tackiness. Took it off and just going naked - yeah fingerprints and oils from your face tend to make a mess of the screen, but that happens with most protectors too. Quick wipe on the jeans or shirt and it's all good

Even just a few grains of sand in your pocket can cause those minor scratches so I keep mine in a holster.

I was using screen protectors when I bought it. Then one night I dropped my phone when I was in the bathroom after dropping it two or three times before and that night however the screen broke. I have insurance and therefore was able to replace the screen for free. Then I bought cheap protectors at Wal-Mart..Bad Idea. Response was horrible and you had to cut them,etc..Just a very bad idea. I finally decided that if I'm paying thee outrageous price for the phone and have only had to use insurance once..Then I might as well go naked because if I need to replace the screen I'll just do so. Why pay an additional cost ? If finger prints are an issue which they're only noticeable imo if you're watching films or the phone is off then just carry a cloth. Wipe as needed.

Thats what he said!!
I use a invisible shield myself, I like it. Besides a few little bits of black fuzz under the screen protector.. Its a ***** to apply it though, and you NEED to leave it off for 24 hours like it says or you'll probably be trying to get a new phone... like me....
cant help but circulate my video. that was probably causes by the damn invisible shield solution...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvosH8UZrWw
I dropped mine and it scratched, bought the Realook screen protectors from Amazon and you can't even tell it's there.
I use www.stealthguards.com , They haven't let me down yet, and are much better than my Zagg on my Evo. Plus they are cheap as hell, well, free! You just pay shipping.
I had the screen protector (phantom Skinz) case and holster (seidio) and have since removed them. I've been naked and without protection (lol) for about 6 months now....not a scratch. My right pocket is reserved for it and nothing else. Phone still looks like its brand new out of the box.
If you need a screen shield I would definitely recommend Phantom skinz. Awsome product and unlike a lot of the others that claim to be "barely visible", this one actually is.
Nothing on mine.
I got those stealth somethingerother protectors kits when they were giving them away in pairs, but after putting one on the back cover to see how it felt, I decided against using it.
I've actually run a serrated knife across my screen (violently) and had no scratches at all, however on the other hand one tiny (.5mmx4mm) line appeared way up top by the indicator within a month or so of ownership. No idea how that happened.
Oh well.
I ran Zagg Invisibleshield for the first month, but had to ditch it because the orange peel was so bad and so was the tacky feeling. I've been bare ever since. Just got the wife an Evo Shift and since I was already ordering a set of Realook protectors for her I went ahead and got a set for myself. Ideally, I will sell this phone when I am ready for the next (dual core) toy, and why waste $100 on an insurance replacement if I don't have to?
i might have an extra protector at home, otherwise i'll just probably go naked, not gonna spend 17 bucks for another sprint one and figure at worst case, i'll only have the phone another year and a half. with the way sprint is going with wimax, probably only going to be another 6 months so I can live with it, plus I really don't like the feel of the protector.

Xmas Came Early

Well i came across a box while trying to help my wife wrap packages for the kids, tf101 32gb! Of course i won't let her know i saw it. So in anticipation i was looking at getting a few steps ahead. One is a screen saver, im looking at the Lexerd, i really don't like the idea of soaking the screen with fluid. Also recommendations for an sd card, i was looking at a 32gb card. I know not to buy off fleabay because of knock-offs. Looking forward to Xmas!

In my opinion, the only reason for a screen protector is for it's anti-glare properties (for the anti-glare models). I use one, just for that purpose - it also keeps the screen cleaner and allows your finger to slide alot better...
Personally, I opted for one of the more expensive anti-glare models for my Transformer and love it - it's the SGP Anti-Glare for the Transformer (Steinheil).
I forget what I paid, but remember it being expensive. Works great though.
I believe in screen protectors, i have plenty of scratches on my screen protector for my phone, a small investment will save the screen. Ill have to check out the other screen protector. Hopefully there will be some good deals on sd cards in the next week.

Its ironic really, because If you didn't have the protector you wouldn't have scratches... Atleast on devices with gorilla glass. Like the other guys have said, you can't scratch these screens, or rather you will have to go our of your way to try. The only need for screen pro is for anti glare, otherwise, all you are doing is paying for something that is vulnerable to being scratched. The cleanest, scratch free screens you will see will be on tfs that are neked.
But I understand your stance, you got to do what you feel is right. Have fun, I love this tablet, I know you will too.

I actually got a scratch on my screen and I have no idea how it got there. I am pretty careful with my devices. No scratches on the other non gorilla glass devices I own so I am not sure how this keeps happening. It is only on the bezel part so its no big deal to me. I'm thinking it was in my backpack and slipped out of its case and got scratched. Sand or small stones can scratch gorilla glass as I have seen a couple of abusive videos on youtube prove.
I also found a scratch on my Infuse 4g on the black bezel part so I am now in the mindset of screen protecting my current and future phone's and tablets even if they are gorrila glass.
Now if I could only find a screen protector that feels good and looks good to me. I want the same kind that they put on the xperia x10 phones. Any of the protectors I have tried since are horrible to me. I just end up ripping them off and ruining them.
Anyways, you got the best xmas gift you could have hoped for. That is until you get greedy like me and want a prime lol!
So you didn't get scratches on the screen, just the bezel...which isn't gorilla glass and there for not what we are taking about. Or you are mistaken at what the bezel part of the phone is. The bezel will get scratched, along with everything else that isn't gorilla glass, unless you get a full device wrap.
So for clarification, are you referring to the actual glass or the material around it?, which would be the bezel. because I would like to know what you did to scratch the screen of any device with gorilla glass... Perhaps tried cleaning it with a carbide coated shammy cloth lol.
Seriously though, I have yet to meet anyone who has damage there screen in a scenario that a screen protector would have saved it.
Sent from my Infuse... Love it!
Personally, I think scratches are more of a problem with phones since they are slipped into our pocket (with coins or keys, etc).... With a tablet, I would think that it would be pretty tough to scratch it, but I'm sure it could happen - Gorilla glass isn't indestructible!
Non-issue for me, since I use it for the anti-glare'ness, so I'm proteted just in case anyway, but that wasn't my goal....
The best screen protector!
I paid $150 for mine. It came with a keyboard and an extra battery. Joking aside. I must be one of the lucky ones who have never scratched their screen. It has fallen off the couch multiple times. I set my glasses on it all the time when it is undocked. The cats have walked across it. Still, nothing but finger smudges. Anti-glare would be nice though. Might look into one of those.
If whatever it is can scratch the Gorilla glass, it will go right through a screen protector. Other than glare, I see no reason for a screen protector on the TF. Search for Gorilla glass here and see some of the videos on things people have done to their TF screen without damage.
First of all, welcome to the club! My TF has been a lot of fun to own, I can't really imagine not having a tablet at this point.
Secondly, add me to the list of people who don't really believe in a screen protector for a tablet. My Transformer is never in a position where the screen is exposed when I'm not using it -- it's either closed up in the dock, or closed up in my Asus case.
I use these on my screen every day to remove smudges and dust: http://www.targus.com/us/productdetail.aspx?sku=TXA00212US (Around $8 for a pack of 3 ... I keep one in my bag, one at home, and one at work)
And for times when there's too much caked on the screen to be removed by those pads, I use a couple of Sight Savers cleaning pads (box of 50 is about $3 at Target) -- after dusting off the screen of course. Not a scratch on my baby!
Its a large screen and I have a protector on it. The screen protector is on there because it is a smudge resister type because the Transformer gets nasty quick. Not there are never any fingerprints... plus it protects the screen.

What you are really going to want is a case. Roocase available at Amazon for about $25.00 is an excellent accessory that keeps the screen protected and gives it a touch of class when carrying. It is also a nice stand. http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Multi..._1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1324114272&sr=1-1-catcorr I think you'll find you can do without the screen saver once you put it in a case.

Well, it all depends what you are looking for...
Have you ever tried an anti-glare or anti-fingerprint protector before though - again, the protection is really secondary, the real reason I use them is becuase they keep the screen clean and more importantly, they allow your finger to slide so much easier...
The last thing I want is an always-on case, especially since I have the dock - it's really it's own case... So, it all depends - but I'd highly recommend that you try an anti-glare protector before writing them off completely...
mine had a screen protector on it for like two days, i couldn't stand it, felt like i was touching gel, cost $14.99 at bestbuy and $10 for them to apply it. been using it without the screen protector since and it feels a lot nicer and smoother touching the screen.

I'm sure this wasn't an anti-glare protector though.. Sounds like a Zagg protector, which I never liked either....
Even with the anti-glare type, there are good ones, bad ones and horrible ones! I've had the best luck with the more expensive brands, but also found a model at 5 Below for my iPad 1 and they were great too (for $5!)... Then of course, is the really hard part - getting them on properly, with no bubbles or anything like that!
But, if all goes right, it really does make the touch-screen interface that much better...
Lol screen protectors are a waste on tf101, they, are also much softer a good therefore scratch much easier than the glass underneath.
Seems some are fooled into thinking that because their protector is scratched, those scratches would have been on the screen, which is nonsense

The other reason I don't care for screen pro is because they tend to make the screen more dull, especially with anti glare.

Is it necessary to have a screen protector? Pros & cons?

Is it really beneficial? What are the pros and cons? Does it affect how clear the screen is? Does it affect touch sensitivity?

I use an anti glare type for several reasons, 1) Keep it from being scratched, 2) To reduce sun glare, yes it does reduce the screen brightness the trade-off its worth it imho. 3) Finger prints smudges are annoying as hell and I cant keep cleaning the screen. 4) Finger glide yes fingers tends to stick to the glass but with an anti-glare protector they just glide. My 2 cents
Thanks, Blackwidowman!
Fingerprints are such a pain, with the screen protector; fingerprints don't stick?
I always use a screen protector my smartphones and tablets. I just get a clear one, and I don't notice it once it's on. To me, they are too much money to risk scratches.
Personal preference really, for some the added protection is well a worth the change in look and feel. For others like myself there's just no way we'll sacrifice the clarity of the display for any amount of protection.
Since my First android phone (HTC Desire) i dont use one and have No scratches.

Never used one on any phone or tablet. I just look after my devices. I mean what would you be doing to scratch it? Using a shard of metal instead of a finger. Phones I can understand, putting it in the same pocket as keys or coins or somthing. I just never put anything in my pocket with my phone. But a tablet, not exactly pocket size. If I take it out with me, it is in a bag (on it's own) or in my hand. I have had it a few months and not a single mark on it. As for fingerprints, much easier to wipe of glass than plastic. Some decent screen wipes make easy work of them. Or a few breaths on the screen and a glasses cloth.
Basically, take care of your tablet and you won't need any kind of protection
I dont think I'll ever need it for my tablet. No scratches without a case or protector. About fingerprints, I never see those.

Well this may not be a issue on the screen protector on the tab. The one i had for my charge did nothing but hold in all the oils from my hands causing the screen to have a constant foggy film over it. Just something to keep in mind.

LOL! Me too. I a stressed out just thinking about mine arriving. Ugh, I may ask a friend who is good at this to do it for me.
I've had my Galaxy Vibrant for a year and half and my Galaxy 10.1 tab since July and I've never used a protective screen. They both get heavy use and I carry them with me all over the place and nary a scratch. There is a reason why they use gorilla glass.
I personally hate screen protectors. I haven't used one in I believe 6 years.
Given that it's kept in the Samsung Book Case, the only time I anticipate my Tab will ever come near anything that'll scratch it, is if it hits the floor, at which point it'll basically be a written off screen - and fingerprints? Well I have glasses anyway, so a spray or 2 of glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth once a week or so and everythings perfect.
I've also generally got quite dry hands, so with a screen protector on I can't 'swipe' across the screen because the plastic gives much more resistance than the glass of the screen.
Similar thing with my smartphone, nothing shares a pocket with it and so far I haven't had a single scratched screen...in fact the most damage I've done to any phone in the last 3 or so years is that I've lost the H and C from the back....
Some sort of screen protection is a must for me. I just find ways to scratch and break stuff.
I suck at applying the cling type protectors so with my DX and Rezound I have Otterbox Defenders and with the GTabs (I've had two...sold one and missed it) I have Gumdrop cases. Both these companies have a clear membrane for the screen which works well for me.
Although I object to screen protectors because they mess up the beauty of the display, I decided to get one due to the fact that I hate the finger prints i leave on the screen. I went to the mall and installed ghost armor on it and so far I like it, a lot, surprisingly. The display is still as beautiful, no finger prints and it actually feels nice.
it is supper hard to put one one it takes allot of time and paitnce i used my tab for a few months and i was fine without a saver i jest got one for fun but it is like heck to put on and i have a few bubbles in it lol
I love the skin-like feel of Zagg protectors. I now put them on all of my devices. No fingerprints, tactile feedback, and accident protection.
I put their leather skin on the back of my galaxy tab and the orange peel protector on the front. Feels elegant and solid.

Today will be the third time I am taking it back to ghost armor in the mall. So far at least 2 specks of dust under the protector each time...can they get it perfect or should I just get my money back? I freaking hate the mall by the way...

They F'ed it up again. They went thru 2 protectors this time since I told them perfection or bust (which was their whole stock at the time). The guy told me it was imperfections in the screen protector...really...seriously? They don't refund their labor cost either, bunch of BS, I do NOT recommend ghost armor. I got what money I could get refunded and I'm never going back.

I got this : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y09J68/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
Took me one try to apply it and it's perfect. I applied it in a hot steamy bathroom

What's the verdict on screen protectors?

Do you use them on your tablet?
I do.

Same here, the screen is too valuable on the tab to get scratched imo ...
I've ordered this one for my SGS
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VWR2GO/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
The review I've read was saying it was pretty good, barely noticable, wich is a must considering a big plus on samsung's products are the screen.
I'll see if it's worthy, if it is, I'll order this one for the tab:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...TJV_2?ie=UTF8&m=A1E9T6XPH2ITJV&n=&s=&v=glance
(anyone has it already?)
I had one on originally, but got the newton rings and sent it back. I never bothered putting one on my new tab. I actually much prefer the feel of it without the screen protector. I have a case that covers the screen when I'm not using it, so I feel the risk of scratching is minimal. The protector just felt sort of rubbery, while the bare glass feels really smooth and slick. Could be the brand of screen protector. But I don't see much of a benefit of putting one on at this point.
But I do have 4 kids, so maybe you don't want take my advice on using supplemental protection...
Yep, don't feel right unless i do. I use a zagg from best buy, since they have never died on me.
Nope, I just use the official Samsung "book cover" case. Why would I want to cover such a sexy, smooth glass screen with a piece of plastic?
I did, and took it off weeks after. No matter what protector you use, it will diminish the quality of the screen. I tried the Zagg and BodyGuardz and when I took them off again, I realized that the screen is too sexy to be hindered. It's Gorilla Glass people; it doesn't scratch that easily. I have my tablet with a TPU case and I have no scratches so far. Just be careful where you put it and you're good to go.
I'm a huge fan of Matte finish anti-glare screen protectors. My tab is sporting one, so is my Galaxy S2...other protectors just get covered in fingerprints as well as not having one on... you should try it. Some people like them some don't... IMO best type of screen protectors.

I've had mine since they first day that Samsung sold the Tab and have never used a screen protector. Not a single scratch or mark on the screen.
Tablets are different than phones. Generally people chose a case that closes over the screen. It's not like you're going to put it in your pocket and get the screen scratched by your keys.
If your case doesn't close to cover the screen or you don't use a case all the time then it might be recommended to use a screen protector. Otherwise the only thing that should come in contact with the screen is your finger or a stylus. Unless, of course, you drop it.
I have had mine since launch with no screen protector and no scratches. It might be a question you have to ask yourself, as far as how much wear and tear will your tab see? It's not like a phone I keep in my pocket and carry everywhere (although I do take my tablet just about everywhere) that can get scratched by keys and the like.
+1 on matte protectors. Also, get a full body protector (sides and back are not scratch resistant!)
I, personally, can't stand the matte ones. It makes the screen look too grainy

+ 1
I use a bookcase and screen protector. I usually take care of my electronics but somehow I managed to get some small scratches on my screen. I am not sure if they came from using my dagi stylus or from the cloth I use to wipe it with (dry booger perhaps). If you plan on using a stylus I would go for a screen protector. I am currently using one from Belkin but wouldn't really recommend it. I applied as pr instruction but it has an oily look to it. I spoke to their customer service and they said they would send me a new one but haven't received it yet (2 weeks).

I love matte ones but again the rainbow effect annoys me, so I found this SGP Ultra Fine - they advertise it as NO RAINBOW effects (link)
Does anyone here uses this and know it to be true or know if any other screen protectors do this?
I'm quite annoyed at the fact that the screen isn't oleophobic, attracts too many fingerprints !
Cheers
Never used them on SGS or Tab. Screens still look as good as new.

Nope... I have the Samsung case which protects the tablet well and as others have said it's Gorilla glass, so it doesn't scratch easily. The screen is too nice to cover it up.
I also don't have one on my sgs2 which is always in my pocket (nothing else in the same pocket) and it doesn't have any scratches after about 7 months.
I really question the use of cases and screen protectors for phones... In 2-3 years you are likely gonna change phones anyway... Why rob yourself of the smoother and better looking screen? So that it's still in good shape when you get rid of it? ? ? I'd rather enjoy the phone to it's full potential while I use it with the risk of getting scratches than keeping it in pristine shape for when it ends up in a drawer or in someone else's hands.

Many times 2-3 years is a longer time than I think is actual. More like 1-2.
But on point, because a device without scratches on on the screen can bring twice as much used than one with scratches.
Just my two cents.

Screen Protector Needed?

I have just received my nexus 4 today and I have kept the screen protector on it for now - is it worth getting a proper one?
I used one on my one s but got fed up after noticing a degradation in screen quality so I just took it off. It also got really oily which bugged me a bit.

Depends how anal you are with screen protection. I have a BSE on mine and don't notice any degradation.
I also have a screen protector on mine and notice no real degradation in screen quality. My protector can get oily at times (especially if you take a lot of phone calls and put it against your face) but its nothing a microfiber cloth won't fix easily. Worth it to me, as I'm very anal about scratches on my display. Those you can't wipe off with a rag.
I noticed a few scratches after I took it off my HTC but it didn't seem to be noticeable when the screen was on. Shouldn't bother me too much if I do get any.
How much did that BSE one set you back? Was looking on Amazon and a pack of 3 is around £6... Probably won't be the best quality.

You should always have a screen protector no matter what screen you have.
Avoid pregnancies, use protection.
Edit: I meant to avoid scratches..

And that is where babies come from.. I mean, scratches.
I use the one from sedieoonline. Honestly the best protector I have tried. Its a dry application. Feels just like the original screen and doesn't have the orange peel look afterwards. I'll prob never use another brand again.

Never used one on any of the phones I owned and never had any scratches on the screen. Guess I was lucky or very careful how I was handling them.
well i have a 2.5 year old desire that i religiously used screen protectors with, the phone slid screen down off a motorcycle when it fell out the mount and got dropped onto every side/corner possible i dont know how many times, although the top and bottom corners of the bezel are scratched and dented the screen is still unmarked,
im not taking chances with the nexus 4, i ordered screen protectors the same day as i ordered the phone,
so far its landed face down twice and the screen protector has a decent chip into it which you can feel with your fingernail but the screens fine, in my opinion the protector has done its job and will be replaced for another tomorrow,

Well, as far as I'm concerned the Nexus 4 has Gorilla Glass 2 in the front (not quite sure about the back, as I've heard it scratches quite easily) so I wouldn't worry that much about scratching it... but keep in mind that it is glass so scratches still happen. I would suggest to look around in the "The Best Screen Protector Thread" in Nexus 4 Accessories to see what users have to say. Anyways, your phone will always be safer with a screen protector on, but if you really don't want to use one then just use a case with raised edges to prevent it from touching any surface...
Just my two cents :silly:

Yeah thanks, I'll have a look and see what I can find, just don't want to be spending silly money on one!
I know that gorilla glass is pretty hard to scratch, but its inevitable at the end of the day... I heard that its tiny grains of sand from dust or whatever that scratches it.
