Firstly I am no expert, however I would like share my experiences and knowledge of battery saving tips. This is probably best suited to novices like myself and some tips maybe obvious to some, but hey if they are, try the next one!

Tip 1 :
Turn off wifi, GPS, Bluetooth - when not using it.
Tip 2 :
If you know that you're going to be in a bad reception area (has 0 bar) for awhile, turn ON airplane mode. If you let the radio keep on searching for a signal, then it's going to drain the battery. For example, I would do this when travelling on the tube in london.
Tip 3 :
Turn off google's location service, unless you need latitude. - Settings - Location Services - Turn off all 4 boxes.
Tip 4 :
Dim screen brightness, I like to use a widget called brightness level, mainly keep brightness on 25%. Screen brightness is a big culprit for battery drain.

If your a facebook user, uninstall the official facebook app as this is a big battery drainer, I prefer to use :

At the risk of stating the obvious, there is another even more radical power saving measure possible:
If you are in a situation where you really only need to use the phone as a simple phone, then TURN OFF BOTH MOBILE DATA AND WI-FI COMPLETELY!
I know, people will say "but what's the point of having a smartphone", but as an example, at work my only use of the phone is to be contacted in emergency. It's so easy to toggle data, I often just switch it off.
You will find that with the latest firmware and data off, the battery life is truly amazing.
Agree mobile data does eat a lot of battery to and if your phone is just sitting there idle or you are in desperate need then turning it off could be an option.

It's a small point, but on AMOLED screens, it takes less power to produce black than anything else. If you're desperate to squeeze every ounce of battery out of your device, theme your apps darker, if you can.

Everything is set to sync and working in the background. nothing is done manually on my phone. gReader is set to sync every hour pulling images and snippets. BeWeather is set to sync every 6 hours. Built in lockscreen weather is set to sync every 3 hours. I have some other stuff with push notifications too.

Lockscreen is lightish blue, and homescreen is live wallpaper.
So it seems, I go against all this tip LMAO. Battery still last a whole day for me.
I hate turning things off and putting phone in airplane mode and all these tips to save battery. The S3 has a capable enough battery. Just use your smartphone to the fullest.
I'm pleased for you, if one day you wanted to get even more battery life, at least you know what to do! How much on screen time do you get? Screenshots?
Using juice defender is easier and a more consequent method of achieving better battery life.
I used to do everything manually but it felt stupid because I kept repeating myself. Leaving the house: turn off this and that. Arrive at work turn on something else again.
Why have a computer and perform the tedious and repetisios task ourselves?

Not saying I get the most optimum battery life, but it gets me through a day. I get around 2 hour screen time and 19+ hours. I just like to keep every on for convenience.
I will post a screen shot when I deplete my battery.

Again whatever works for you. Personally I prefer the manual approach. Think I found juice defender made things worse for me.

Good idea. Just a couple of points.
GPS uses no battery unless an application specifically is using GPS to locate you. In other words, it only uses power if its flashing away in the status bar.
No need to turn mobile data off when on wifi. The connection is not using power unless an MMS wants to come in.

thanks for the useful tips. Although my battery lasts most of the day also and it seems sometimes more frivilous to be turning apps on and off rather than to keep them all on and have your phone last a little shorter....

I'm only suggesting to disable apps you don't use such as email and exchange. As I only use gmail. The other point I made is to turn off background data. Classic example is Google currents. I just sync when I go into the app and have background data off which is a setting within currents.

When i reading long white pages with black text i often use negative colour widget. Saved battery and better for my eyes.

Tis a good tip. Actually, rooted users with the latest Siyah kernel can tap home 4 times and do this too.

That's not good life at all. You just let it set there... 2 hours of screen time for a 19+ hour day... I can get over about 60 Hours with 5+ hours of screen time easily

Can someone please explain how to configure ALL of the Juice Defender Ultimate options on the Epic?
I paid for the Ultimate version of Juice Defender and only some Icons are lit up. Icons such as "Night" still appear to be gray.
Given the big battery issues with Epic, this tools seem like a great workaround.
You may have tried this but since you have purchased it why not try removing it from the device and then reinstalling from the market. This should ensure that you are installing the version you paid for.
You actually have to run "Ultimate Juice" before you run Juice Defender. IT will pop up and say this is just a license, run Juice Defender or something like that.
@goddimus, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling already.
@kcarpenter, where would I run "Ultimate Juice" from 1st because it does not appear in my APPS screens?
The good news is that the default auto config certainly seems to be helping a lot with battery life. Need to test for longer, but 24hrs without charge and very moderate use.
i downloaded juicedefender and let it run in easy mode or w/e its called and didnt even get seven hours of battery life so i uninstalled it.
I'm really pleased with the results so far, I only want to know how to get control over the customizations it advertises. There is no response from the developer Latedroid.
When you think about it, it makes complete sense for the phone to not eat up battery when its not necessary. Its a stellar concept and checking around you can find some sort of similar apps.

Can I PLEASE get some help on how to customize Ultimate Juice Defender? Auto mode seems to work pretty good, but if I can squeeze more out of the battery based on personal profile, it will be even better. My fone is a Samsung EPIC (Galaxy S) The "WiFi" and "Schedule" icons and their settings for example seem grayed out and say "Do nothing" in the summary area. Only 4 of 9 features seem to be enabled in some way. I paid for Ultimate.
All I am asking for is an explanation of how to use the app. All of the documentation I find talks about what the app can do but nothing about how to configure each feature. What would be ultimately great is a new version of JD that actually has a much more usable and intuitive configuration UI.... or dare I say, more "normal" looking config UI.

ultimate juice definetely rocks. on the stock rom.
after flashing baked 1.0 and installing UJ again, i lost 25% in 15 mins. uninstalled UJ, and i'm getting 12 hrs of heavy usage.
go figure....
I have been using juice defender with the UJ add on since I have had the phone with the suggested settings the first time you run the app. The only things I have edited are under the app setting I completely stopped google talk from sending or receiving data at any time. Also noticed that I use less batt when connected to a wifi network so I have locale handling turning my gps on and off when in known hotspots. Attached a screen shot of how JD is saving my batt.

What I need, and reason I started this thread is to get some help understanding how to configure all JD options. In my JD view, things like WiFi, Timeout, Night do not allow making any adjustments.

@OP....this may be an obvious question but on your JD settings screen does it say Enabled or Disabled?
If it is disabled that is the only way that I know that you won't be able to adjust your settings....If it is disabled, just click on that Disabled button to enable...

I have a couple of questions about Juice Defender if someone could be so kind...
1) Is there really just no way to run Google Talk with this application?
2) I use the Google News & Weather app which refreshes every hour, last time i used JD, it prevented this from happening. Any workaround?
JD is Enabled (blue button with green ON light).
@cognitivel0gic, what Standby option are you talking about? I don't see anything that says Standby on my version. Are there different versions out there? From the Help button, mine says "Evolution 1.8.8 beta". I'm using JD on Samsung Epic (Galaxy S)
And what about that activity log I see in the help screen? Does that keep growing forever??? Is there ANY documentataion for this App?

No problems with the market. I disable GTalk and GVoice.

I opened this thread to see how people is using Google Now nowadays. I found myself excited about the launch of it, but now I found it pretty boring and useless. First, I sometimes use it for weather, the other functions are not really working. Everyday I'm going to my workplace, at the same hour, working in the office between 9 am - 2pm and 5 pm - 8 pm. I have the location history enabled, the house address and workplace address both added, I see the statistics in my dashboard and my current location in latitude (no check-ins however), but Google never advised me that I need to leave from home to be in-time at work or reverse. The only things I got was some live scores and some random mistakenly notifications like "78 minutes to home", while I was only like 200 meters away.... Also, I found that if I search my job address in Google Maps, the location is correctly shown, but in dashboard, I'm getting that briefcase (workplace icon) wrong positioned with around 80-100 meters. Otherwise, Google Now is answering to all my questions and working pretty good, but I don't find it really smart...
Google Now works well. It is just that Google Maps have a long way to go. Many routes it shows are not the fastest, etc.
Like you i was pretty excited about the whole thing, the problem is that the tradeoff in battery life simply isn't worth it for me.

i noticed that when i'm with wifi enabled, if i look at battery usage, wifi is always connected even in standby (with wifi disable option active)
double checked and if Gnow is disabled wif act as it was supposed..
It would be great if there was some way to change the location poll frequency to maybe every 15 minutes or whatever, rather than the default.

I see no huge changes in battery life since I activated the location and search history in my phone just for Google Now. The problem is that the check-ins are not regular, I'm getting bad locations sometimes, so Google Now can't give me information about when I need to leave home because of traffic or so.... Nothing. Got one notification in a whole month and that one was wrong as I said in my first message. No idea what I need to do instead. Check in at work at the same hour daily? Why the pin sometimes is flying like 500 meters away from my location (that's what I see in dashboard) while the google maps app is showing my location with 16m accuracy even if I'm in a building?

Exactly, the poll frequency is not fixed, google is doing checks when it want so that's why I guess I'm not getting reminds about job etc

You can change the way each card works and when you want them to appear, also changing the priority of the weather card to low also helps.
Not sure if that's what you meant

Menu -> Settings -> Google Now -> Switch to OFF. then you can delete the location history and search history in Google Dashboard and disable the latitude and all the rest of stuff or you can simply reset the phone and don't activate it again.

He means that the Google is checking your location randomly instead to checking it every 15 minutes or so.
The big question is....how to make Google Now know that I'm starting the work at 9 am, so I will get those cards saying "30 minutes to work" or something like that. Google knows that I'm working as I'm getting those fancy graphics in the Dashboard (https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0/dashboard) saying that I'm working X hours per week and Y hours I'm home, but the data is not accurate perfectly. I reset the data but same story now. Not sure if it's because my location sometimes jumps some kilometers away even if I have the wifi and gps enabled. Do I need to use Latitude and autocheckin or something like that to get accurate data ?

More exactly, traffic cards.
I will try for the next days to click on "Update" here exactly when I'm arriving at office, maybe this way I will make google learn more about my locations...

I'm using Tasker to turn off Mobile Data when on Wifi, set my phone in "Work" mode when I get to work (Silent, no Bluetooth), disable PIN lock when I'm at home, disable USB debugging when I'm away from home and reboot every morning.
The greatness of he program is that you can do pretty much anything with it. I currently I use it for 2 main things. I have set up a profile so automatically launches carhome ultra when it detects that I am connected to my cars bluetooth and I have it plugged into a charger. That way when I jump into the car I just have to put it in its holder and plug in the charger and I am good to go.
I also have created a 3 short cuts that have automated my "wifi calling" profile. One shortcut automatically forwards my number to a google voice number The second toggles airplane mode (so I don't kill my battery searching for a signal), activates wifi and logs me into groove ip. The final one automatically unforwards my number.
On my old G2 I also had a profile that launched a screen dimming program and clock/alarm program when it detected my home wifi and ac power. I used my phone as my bedroom clock
Hope this gives you some ideas
I have an NFC tag in my car and when I scan it, turns on Bluetooth, and opens the Assistant app. Then, depending where I am (checks if my Last WiFi connection was my house) it will ask where would I like to go. I say a place and it says ok let's go to %place name% or if I wasn't at home it will prompt me if I want to navigate home

I have in the past to automate tasks but with nfc task launcher I don't need it, of course instead I need nfc tags but it's more convenient for me.
Where to start?!! I currently have 14 profiles and over 25 tasks! I use for all sorts eg:
Sunrise and sunset - Gets these from a yahoo api every day and updates a minimalistic text widget
Sleep mode - Check in and out of Sleepbot, does all the sound etc too and sets a variable which I use for some other profiles that I only want to run when I'm asleep.
Car mode - When I am in the car it sets the ringer, turns vibrate off, sets screen to fully on and opens car home. Also uses the sun info from above and it it is dark outside will run Screen Filter to drop the screen brightness right down.
Car exit - When I leave the car it automatically stores the time and location so I can navigate back to the car (useful if I park somewhere unusual or in a big car park) and another widget keeps the time in case I am on a meter.
Work - Sets the sound when in range of work wifi
Various locations - A few like the gym and badminton club which check in to foursquare, go silent, enable secure lock screen and, when leaving, remind me to turn of my heart rate monitor.
Frost check - Check the weather evey hour at night and if it ever drops below freezing, pops a notification so in the morning I know if I need to allow more time to de-ice the car
Games/Gallery - When a game or the gallery is open it stops the screen from locking which is especially handy when showing photos to people
I also use a lot of these with NFC tags such as the sleep one and car.
And others! I'm always playing around with it and the scenes function allows you to create entire interfaces!

I am in the UK but they will ship to Canada. Alternatively, look for similar tags on eBay Canada but make sure to avoid Mifare 1k tags, they don't on the N4

There's a ton of things you can do with Tasker. I'm just using it to change my wallpaper. I've got a different one for sunrise, morning, daytime, sunset, and evening. Additionally, when it rains or the weather is overcast, I've got different wallpapers.
I think one of the best things about Tasker is cell triangulation for location. Basically a rough gps of your location to use all the profiles and settings at different locations and essentially no battery cost as it just pulls data your radio is anyway.
The only downside is your limitations are there because not all apps have plug ins. For example I'd like to setup a task for Rom toolbox to backup apps but that's not possible, I think.

Download nfc task launcher and buy through their store, not sure if they ship to canada though.

I'm not going to say yes because I haven't done it BUT I'm sure it can, I'm pretty sure the primary function (detecting another nfc device) is built into android so tasker should be able to take that trigger and toggle wifi ap.

+1! I am using Llama until tasker gets a Holo UI theme lol. Which is being worked on from what I saw from AndroidPolice.

I've seen the same and that UI that they knocked up would get me to purchase it... They've made massive amounts and not even bothered to update the UI

Man I can't wait to get my N4 (if it ever ships). I hope they do update to Holo theme though. I'm not going to use any non Holo apps; I hate when a UI doesn't look unified ;-(

I agree the interface needs work but waiting for that is daft. It's all about automation and once the tasks are created you don't see the app itself very often. It's not pretty but I think that is vastly outweighed by how incredibly powerful it is.

hi ,
I own a nexus 7 32 gig wifi only tab
it runs on stock JB 4.2.2
it was functioning perfectly until last week
suddenly the amount of battery drain was too high
with 8 hours the whole battery drained from 100 to 0%
in the battery stats "screen" was the highest battery consumer
i did a factory reset but still the problem persists
Now according to the battery stats,
google play magazine service is the highest batery drainer.. 89.2 %
i couldnt disable the service
I dont have any idea about how to proceed now with the issue... please help
Try uninstalling the updates to that app it should help

try searching in the "All" tab rather than "Downloaded", this is because I think it comes preinstalled as a system app, rather than a separate download.
very weird that it is now using that much battery, are you trying to sync something constantly? Instead of uninstalling updates, try just clearing app data and cache if you don't use it.
in typical use, the screen is supposed to use the most battery, turn it to manual and set it to a lower value to use a little less.

am confused now
after returning from work i checked the battery stats
i got two kind of results, one from "battery " in settings page and one from battery doctor
according to inbuilt "battery" stats screen was the highest consumer of battery
but according to battery doctor android operating sys is the highest
pls find the attached screenshots
still the battery drain exists... please help
This is very simple to do and I've found it helpful in conserving my battery life.
1. Open up Settings>General>About Phone
2. Scroll down to "Build Number" and keep tapping it until it says that Developer options has been enabled.
3. Hit the return button and now navigate to Settings>General>Developer options
4. Turn Developer options on
5. Scroll to the bottom and check "Do not keep activities"
6. Tap on "Limit background processes" and select "No background processes"
Thats it!
Note: Some apps like Netflix wont work if "Do not keep activities" is checked.
I've done this on plenty of phones and its helped with the battery life on all of them.

I wonder if i change limit background process to no background process does the app will turn off if I open the other app? And will app need notification like email or whatapp no longer working? Thanks
It's odd that developer mode/options were already enabled on mine and yours weren't.

This could end up draining more battery. Normally things are held in ram so they start up faster, if you have to copy something to ram every time you run it opposed to it already being there, you are going using more cpu power which means using more battery.

I agree, if you rarely use the phone, it might be a good option. For most of us here, allowing apps to stay cached will help performance and constant re-loads, especially considering that there is plenty of RAM.

Agreed. I went ahead and did this just for grins, and everything was slower because nothing stayed up in the background. I'll take the hit in battery life (if there is one) for better performance.

I just use the phone for a few social networks, internet browsing, checking bank info and for tweaks/mods. Hell, I still dont know how to use half the features of this phone (I know I'll never use them lol)

Agreed! Looks like its doing more "harm" than good for most people. I thought I was an "average" user, but I guess I'm not normal
I thought that doing that will ultimately result in draining more battery because of stuff being stored in the RAM
EDIT: After reading post ahead of me (using an app to view this so it only showed the OP and not the comments) I see that I was right lol
I guess I'm another heretic as I also find killing the background processes most of the time saves battery life. The key is whether it is an app you use infrequently and whether the background process engages in polling - especially useless phone home kind of stuff you don't want it to do anyway. In either case I've found it's better to just kill the app's background processes.
Try an experiment: check your battery level before bed and in the morning 7 - 8 hours later with all your background processes running as you normally do, to get your percentage loss. Then do the same the next night after Force Stopping all active app processes that are shown by a 3rd party Task Manager (the native one doesn't show you them). Compare.
This is useful to know because this is what your phone leaks in full sleep mode (if in fact your background processes actually let your phone sleep!) I get 0 to 2% per night loss depending on how strong and steady my LTE signal is, though of course a lot of other factors and settings come in to play. YMMV. Btw, I haven't tried the OP's method but I will. Thanks!

Unfortunately the "Do not keep activities" option doesn't allow the back button to function within an app - as soon as you touch it, it kills the whole app, so it doesn't do what I had hoped, (ie I agree with the consensus that it is useless).
However if anyone knows how to trigger a "Force Stop" (nuke) of the active app so that its background processes are killed as well with one button push, I would be grateful to hear it.

Anything pulled from storage takes more drain on battery compared to pulling from ram. Just remember that.
