What I've read so far include
>Screen ghosting
>Dead pixels
>Screen flicker on low brightness
However your mileage, will of course vary. You will get more accurate results once production models start hitting consumers.

It occasionally kicks puppies.

It was stated in a review a couple days ago (I'm not going to look up which one) that with more use, the screen ghosting issue goes away quicker and becomes unnoticed. The issue is mainly with the screen just needing to warm up after being powered off for a while or in most cases being the first time powered on.
Sent from my SGH-I777

Asus have also said they've not been able to replicate the ghosting on production units.
Flickering has been pretty common with tegra 3 devices but tends to be fixed via software updates.

Questions go in the Q&A section

I sure hope that those ghosting issues don't get worse over time. Or even better, may be Asus isn't talking out their a** and they've fixed the production units

-> Common problems of SGS3 <-

I was considering buying the Galaxy Note, but after I read the Note subforum carefully, I discovered few (major) issues with the device, which made me reconsider my choice.
Now I have the same situation with Galaxy S3. Before I purchase it, I want to know about all the potential problems that are known for this device. Maybe it has bad battary performance, maybe it has bad sound quality, maybe... ?
Please shortly list all the common problems (if any) that happen to be associated with this device.
not just building it up, but i can not say that i have noticed any big flaws with this device.
i have the Note right now as well, and i would pick the S3 hands down over my note, its faster, the screen is better, the battery is great compared to what i was getting on my Note and Skyrocket. and now with Jelly Bean/cm10 here this thing flys.
Gps is decent, Sound is much better than any other phone that i have had, and thats without Supercurio's Voodoo sound which should be dropped here soon.
Its a S3 forum, so yes you will get alot of people saying exactly what i am saying....its a great device. and if you HAVE to choose between the Note and S3 the S3 is a no brainer....
now the Note2 thats a different story when it drops......

I had a lot of issues and ended up having 4 replacement handsets and have just got a full refund today. Issues I experienced were; large gaps between the screen and bezel which allowed dust to settle on the edges of the screen, pink blotch issues when using the front camera, volume button and home button that stuck in when pressed, and all AMOLED screens suffer from ink marks on a black screen to varying degrees.
I think the initial production batches have suffered from poor build quality and I do think I will purchase the phone again in a month or so when the factories won't be over stretched to cope with demand. The pebble blue version which I had seems to suffer from a lot of issues which I put down to rushed production.
Good luck

I agree with everything you've said, except for the GPS part.
I don't find it decent, it's exceptional imho.
It seems to be able to get a solid signal within 5 seconds on a cold start.
It uses both GPS and Glonass together, which explains why it's so fast, but it's still impressive to see.
But back on the subject, I've always chosen devices I was pretty sure I'd be happy with (I'm doing lots of research and reading a lot of reviews on them before buying), but it's the first time that I really don't have any complaints at all (besides minor problems with easy fixes/tweaks, but the phone is really stable and fast out of the box).
Even the only thing I thought I'd be disappointed about, coming from an HTC HD2 (the build quality and design), I was pleasantly surprised about the build quality, and I love the look of the phone, even if it's plastic.
Of course that's only my opinion, but I don't regret buying it one bit
These threads are a common problem in the S3 General section....if you look down I'm pretty sure you'll find threads already created, discussing the problems you've just mentioned

I have been using Note for last 5 months . I bought it from Ebay . Till now I didn't face any problems with the device.
It depends on the device you get, some device may have manufacture defects and that's rare.
Worst case if you get such device you can get it replaced as you have warranty.
So stop thinking about odds and go for the device you love
The GS3 has had an unusually bug-free (relative to most other smartphone releases) launch.
Hardware Problems:
Crackling in audio output when phone display is off (phone is in idle mode). Can be fixed in software by setting sleep mode to Idle Only from Idle + LPA.
Some screens are faulty and have pink areas
Some cameras are faulty and cause pink blotches in images
Software problems:
Cell standby battery usage is misreported and over-inflated
Creating an SMS longer than 3 messages converts it into an MMS. No way to disable this unless modding.
Email client (not gmail) mail body field text selection is bugged. Text gets deleted randomly when moving the text selection handles.
Music player sometimes plays the wrong song (one from a previous playlist) when you click on a song.
Music player also has some problems with organising songs into albums, creating duplicate albums with the same name.
The quick scroll alphabet column (in contacts and music lists) has a delay when sliding finger on it for the first time after app load
That's all I can think of right now.

I'd say the marble white version was relatively bug-free as a launch handset but the pebble blue version probably has just as many launch defects as any other handset. For example, I ended up going through four faulty pebble blue handsets until finally giving up and getting my money back.
Physical home button - hard to reach, hard to press, looks stupid, feels stupid
Wake up lag - Push the power button and wait 1.500 ms for the screen to appear
Only 1 GB RAM - Not enough for a top phone in 2012... This is not 2011 anymore, Samsung!
Nothing else.. Everything else is top class..
Yea that lag is sooooooooo long I fall asleep! And I have to get a long stick to push that dam home button! And the battery it last way to long! Why can't it just die after 14hours like the rest? If you didn't know I was being sarcastic!

Siyah-Kernel greatly fixes that issue. CM9/CM10 even more, it's probably well below 0.5sec

I think you are just too picky about the phone being built perfect it's not going to happen for any phone. The chances of getting a perfectly built phone with no defects at all is lower than getting some minor defect such as "the gap being too big between the bezel and letting in dust" I can't believe they even let you return it for that reason. Good luck on your quest of finding the perfect phone.

My returns were all due to pink blotch issues with the front camera which is unacceptable. I've never had a phone that takes pictures with a pink blotch. In addition to that pink blotch two of my devices also had large gaps. Bits of dust actually got stuck under the screen which, again, is unacceptable for a £500 phone. Samsung must ensure the bezel and screen are correctly sealed so that dust does not build up in inaccessible areas. I've also never had a phone where I could see black dots and whirls on the screen when viewing YouTube videos at night. I'd rather have blacks that are not so deep but are consistent in colour.
Thing is, general build quality of phones is going down whilst prices are going up. It's inevitable.
Love the phone, not noticed any bugs or faults at all. No crackling when playing back audio via headphones

No kernel fixes it. I've tried every single one available on the development section. They are all the same. 1.5 seconds wasted every time you turn on the screen.

Samsung and black clipping/crush

Hi guys, before i start I absolutely love my note. At first I thought the screen was too big, but now I could never go smaller. (now I know how women feel )
However, my biggest complaint is the black clipping/crush, which seems to affect people differently according to their individual note.
This evening I was reminiscing the music I listened too in my youth. One of the videos to a song I love nearly made me throw my note out the window, because of the black clipping. This video is the WORST case of black clipping I've seen during my ownership.
Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svJvT6ruolA&feature=youtube_gdata_player
I am stuck with my note until July at the earliest, when I can upgrade. I do not have the luxury of buying the latest handset as soon as it is released, therefore I will have owned my note for 18 months. I am not sure whether I will buy another Samsung device again. Yes they slack on releasing sources, but for me if they cannot get the basics of a good quality screen right on a high end device, they may as well give up now.
Up until my note, my previous 2 devices were HTC. The Desire and Sensation. Their screens were SLCD, and suffered no clipping. I am aware the cause of clipping is an OLED problem and i can see no power saving or display quality reason for an OLED display. Yes I've looked into ppi but seriously there is little difference.
Every android handset I've owned will only give a maximum of around 4 hours screen on time, regardless of what you do with it or settings you disable (pointless in my opinion, its a SMART phone)
I feel its time Samsung ditched OLED displays before they lose customers. I know s3 owners who changed from iPhone to android (hooray!) but because of the clipping there changing back asap. I keep telling them its a Samsung issue but they don't care. First Impressions count for a lot.
Anyway rant over, just wondered how other SGN users felt about this and how its shaped their future device choice.

I am aware of that thread. (I own a note so of course I am, Samsung knows yada yada yada *yawn*)
I was under the assumption that the general sub forum was for non development posts, which this is. So I apologise that I do not conform to your idea of a non development thread.
All I was seeking was similar experiances too my own, whereby I probably will not buy another Samsung device as long as they continue too use poor quality screens.

Now, to me that suggests I've done my research (I'm not a member since 2010 for no reason, post counts mean nothing)

dude that was the fav. song of mine from past and last time i have seen this video on a htc hd2 there was no such black clipping and now on my note it is so bad.. really it made me that much mad that i wanted to smash the phone on a concrete ground..

This is very poor quality video. That is the first thing I noticed... Not only that I saw black clipping, but also white and gray clipping :silly:
So I'm not sure what I was more worried about. Whether because of a couple of squares that move around the screen (poor quality), or because some of these are gray black or white? (they all three appear crushed/cliped whatever) :silly:
The next thing I did, was look at the second video that was offered in the results, some (darker) HQ video (for ex. "theslowmoguys" videos are usualy very good quality videos and you have enough time to find critical parts of black cliping), and there is significantly less black clipping or no black clipping at all in hq videos
So I am not worried about that problem at all. Despite that, I'm in love with a black color of AMOLED screens. And I would buy another samsung product (Note3) because at Note2 this problem has been resolved
p.s. if you want a greyer black and you want solve this problem, you can download from play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5uZXRtYW5zbGFiLnNhIl0.
or some similar app:good:
my few cents

I had some questions about the nexus 10 I ordered mine from play store shouls be getting here soon after I readed all these problems im ready thinking its gonna be bad like some people say . How do getting replacements work . Do they send me one first then I send messed up one back . After the 15 day return period could you still get replacements if like the screen leeks bad . ???????

If you let Google put the cost of a new Nexus 10 on hold then they will send you a Nexus 10 while you still have yours. The money will be released when they receive your old Nexus 10.
Replacements are done through Google first, and after the return/replacement period then warranty for hardware defects is through Samsung. The Nexus 10 comes with a 1 year warranty, but a couple people have had problems with Samsung trying to say the warranty is only 90 days. The booklet clearly says 1 year though, and I think it says 1 year in the Play store when you buy the tablet so Samsung will have to honor that. If there are too many problems try and get Google involved with Samsung not upholding warranty on Google's tablets.
And it is really just 15% of people making a large stink about problems, many people are perfectly fine and happy with the tablet. Of those 15%, probably 5% will simply never be happy and just want to cause problems.
When you get your tablet be sure to set your background to solid black and delete all icons on the homescreen. Turn the brightness up half way and look for backlight bleed. if you have some, then you should consider returning the tablet for a new one, especially is the bleed has a yellow color to it rather than white. You can turn the backlight up higher to check with more brightness, but if you dont notice it at 50% then you probably wont ever notice any issues with the screen during any use.

but with more care about the possible defect . test the product very good before decide to keep it or not . dont trust google and samsung
- test the bleeding ( i have alot 4 points )
- test the battery . you should get at least 6 hour of screen minimum minimum on surfing the net . ( i get 5 )
- test the hdmi out ( i got it deffective from the box )
At least this are my problems

Yes I love mine. It is extremely smooth with custom ROMs and kernels. We have lots of great options from developers, battery life is exceptional, and the screen looks amazing watching an HD movie or TV show. I suppose if I had ever had problems with the tablet then I may feel differently, but I have yet to have any issues whatsoever. My one regret is that I did not purchase a 32GB version. If I could go back I would have waited another week to buy and paid the extra $100 for double storage space. I have a lot of games installed and my tablet is 90% full on space at all times and I wish I could install more.
I also have the note 10.1 which one you think is better .

When do you notice the light bleeding?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
My tablet does not show any hint of light bleed until it reaches 80% or more brightness on a completely black background. Which is pretty good since LCD screens just inherently have light bleed because of how the backlight is designed for the tech. I have never even gone above 30% brightness while in doors, and outside at 100% it would be impossible to see any backlight bleeding anyway.
Once your tablet arrives I highly suggest the KTManta kernel. It has lots of fun options and the only kernel with a bit of color fix.

I love my N10. But this is my second one, I had to RMA my first one. I was pretty vocal about the problems I was having, because of this:
+Its true that there is a lot of problem threads about this device. Partially this is from Android 4.2.1 not playing well with the N10, partially its because there are some defective N10 devices out there. I know because I had one! When you, the end user, has a general problem and then you go online to try and see if there is a fix, you find these threads, and everyone chimes in together it starts to get intense. Some of the people, as another user said, may never actually be satisfied. But others are reporting real problems, trying to find a fix. Im a lot more OCD than most people I meet, so I just assumed that was what was going on. I assumed I was just being picky, and that others were just being okay with it. But now, after using a different N10, I can say there was a guaranteed problem with my first unit.
So, just like the people that say "bad" need to be taken with a grain of salt, so do the people that say "good". I can say this: there are both good and bad N10s out there, and one thing EVERY new N10 owner needs to do is QUICKLY determine if you have a good or a bad one so that you can remedy the situation ASAP if you have a bad one.

There's two things I'm not a big fan of on the Nexus 10:
- Thermal throttling (this shouldn't even be an issue under normal circumstances, but the situation is far better than it was around launch)
- Available memory (we only have access to 1.2GB of RAM, not anywhere near the advertised 2GB)

Nope. I rooted it as soon as I got my hands on it. My fave: Rasbeanjelly + Trinity..
Edit: Thermal throttling is a common problem across all Nexus devices. But I don't consider it a big problem because I'm underclocked.

- As with LCD screens, this tablet also has screen bleed. Some very less and some are pretty conspicuous.
If this is a big deal for you, buy an AMOLED screen tablet.
- There is no RAM problem.
- in my 6 months of use, i have had 3 random reboots.
2 of which were app crash related.

From my personal experience with the Nexus 10, I believe this to be a fair and accurate assessment. It seems that the known issues of this tablet have been slightly blown out of proportion, or at least have given the impression to an outside observer that the device is riddled with problems....which simply is not the case.

The light bleed issue varies from one device to another. Its important to remember also that its only visible when the screen is dark and bothers some users while others are indifferent to it. My screen's light bleed is very minimal and I don't even notice it unless I'm looking for it.
Because of how the screen is made, all Nexus 10's are susceptible to some degree--even newer devices.

Smearing issues?

Anyone know if the Note 3 has the same smearing issues the gs4 has?

A bit early to ask, no? And of all the professional reviews of the SGS4 none mentioned the issue. The only place I've ever seen it mentioned is on XDA. The N3 will have a different AMOLED panel, different GPU, different version of Android, and probably different graphics drivers. If the smearing is related to any of those things chances are the N3 might not be affected. I've read all the smearing threads on the SGS4 forum and they wouldn't have stopped me from getting a SGS4 and now not a N3. My view on issues that only can be recreated under non-standard conditions or that happen occasionaly (+/-5% of the time) under specific conditions is that they aren't that serious. We'll find out when some of the more "serious" sites like Anandtech, GSMArena, and Notebookcheck DE run the N3 through their objective tests whether it's using a bigger version of the SGS4 panel or a completely new AMOLED panel. The N3 has an inductive display so I'd guess that would require a completely new panel design. But I'm sure if there is smearing there will be no shortage of discussion on it.

Thanks for the reply! Early to ask? Don't agree with you on that one, some people had the chance to play with the device so i hoped someone searched for it..i know i would
+/-5% of the time, the gs4 has it a lot more then 5% of the time unfortunatly...they fixed it in the settings menu but when you use nova and have a really dark background...the grey widgets and some icons have the smearing issue every time you go to another homescreen so that's a lot of the time ( also happens in some apps like zedge )
I'm getting the Note 3 no matter if the smearing issue is still present and if it is i really hope i can live with it but after 2 months it is the reason i sold my gs4 so really hope it doesn't have it

From all of the hands on video's I watched and comments I have read no one mentioned anything about lag, smearing or any other issues. It has been all positive.
