4.1.1 Jelly Bean is unlikely until Samsung releases new binaries - Galaxy S III General

Seeing as the comment made by Codeworkx was made in the development forum, I thought the discussion over CM10 and Jelly Bean should be handled over here.
The statement in question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28610881&postcount=1871
Incompatible binarys.
Will result in no audio, no camera, no hwcomposer, no video codecs...
Enough said?
Let's wait for samsung

It looks like we'll have quite the wait before CM10 or Jelly Bean is available for the S3.

same story with cm9 and android 4.0 update for sgs2 few months back...

Sounds good to me. By the time we get it most apps should be stable on jellybean. At the moment I'm having a lot of compatibility issues on the gnex.
Anyway this phone is already smooth as butter and Google now sucks.

I wouldn't say Google Now sucks, I'm looking forward to it.
As for smoothness, I've only had the device running extremely smoothly while on CM9. On stock and modded TW, it is quick but nowhere near your average Jelly Bean device. CM9 still has issues with camera quality but I've been running it due to the improvements in performance elsewhere.

You'd have to have been living under a rock to even contemplate the idea of Samsung releasing Jellybean within the next 2 months given their history.

Maybe I'm also the only one in the world who can find their way home without a map.

Zing!
Seriously though, I think Google Now is very interesting. I've been hearing about it's behaviour for a week or two on my friend's Nexus. It seems to me that the more this gets worked on, the more intuitive it can become while it's "watching" where you're at regularly.
Already he's noticed it prompting him about traffic around the times he leaves for work in the morning and for home in the afternoon, to tell him about traffic conditions & ETAs.
Pretty amazing possibilities if you can get the phone to passively offer helpful information without asking if you ask me...

Why? ICS was released in November, Samsung leaked the ICS-based stock ROMs in December already, and in February I received an OTA.

tbh i do not want samsung to release jelly bean until later in the year, as the ics and s2 / s3 is still kind of new. I would like samsung to fix and make their current rom solid for x months before moving on.

We’re releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you’re working in the master branch. It’ll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.
Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus S and Xoom will follow.

Honestly, I don't like JellyBean so far. Voice Search doesn't work, and it is totally not as smooth as butter (if you know what I mean).
I'll wait till the Over The Air update, until then, I use the default ROM.

Sdk ports are always marginal at best. We can't really make a decision until official is out. Plus our phones are seriously lacking in the specs department at this point so I'm sure it runs better on something more modern.

fully agree with u, and yet i still like JB very much.
i can already say that for me personally JB is 10 times better than ICS, and i tried most of the ICS roms.
Love butter smooth animations, speed, new camera,
new notifications [although would be much better if u could take a peak with one finger not 2, cuz then u cant do it with one hand],
and at last i can use multitasking...
not the biggest fan of Google Now, at least at this point. ive found it not much usefull 4 me, i would prefer it much more integrated with other apps.

well you have an android device.. it's open source... meaning communities like xda has great developers... you only need to read a bit (5–10 mins) to be able to root and flash cwm recovery into your device Wich btw its hell easy in most samsung devices... then you are ready to flash any custom roms out there... And you can ask anyone devs here in xda are wayyy more talented than manufacturer's... meaning custom roms performs wayyy better than stock roms... and you will be updated as soon as any change in aosp code happens go ahead and void your warranty xD.. there's always methods to go back to stock

Trust me when I tell you, I know. I am running ICS on my Samsung Epic device, which only supports GB. LOL.
No matter how good our developers are, they still need Samsung to do their part. FOR EXAMPLE... Take a picture with your 10.1 using ANY ICS ROM that our developers have put together. Plus, to be completely honest, we shouldn't have to count on our NON-PAID, VOLUNTEER devs to make the software everything that it SHOULD HAVE BEEN when released from Samsuck.

I am in the same boat as you. I should of learned with the Captivate how they do things in regards to updates but I didnt. The only way I will still buy a Samsung product is if they are making the next nexus phone or tablet. That way factory images will be provided and then I can just flash the updates myself and not have to wait for them to update it for me.

Thats the I9100G not I9100, both are totally different units HW wise.
did see that pic and it's looking nice on s2..we will have to see what he cooks up for the i9100...I've heard there is much to do to get it stable ie audio and other important things...it will get there, but it will take time ..
If I'm not mistaken though, codeworkx had a hand in the CM9 port to the I9100 as well, so I wouldn't be overly shocked if he has something to show for it as well. Either way, it comes when it comes. Until then, back to trying out new kernels!

That's exactly it. If I reaaally want to, I could go for a five minute drive and pick up a Galaxy Nexus in a few hours, but the issue is my contract still has until June 2013, so I may as well see it out. After that, my I9100 will probably sit in a draw unused. I've already ordered my Nexus 7 though, so that won't be too much longer. Finally, once my contract is up, hopefully it'll only be a few months before another Nexus phone is announced (assuming they do one roughly every year).
screamworks
I expect it will come by 2014.
Im buying a nexus device next.. I'm done waiting for the upgrade to come out..
I appreciate all the work done by CM team but they never seem to get everything working.. been running CM9 for 7months now on SGS2 and we are still using dirty hacks and workarounds to get stuff working (never works like it should, ie autobrightness, tvout)..
I'm not blaming the devs.. its all Samsung's fault and my fault for not buying a nexus device.. I actually wanna thank all the devs for doing all the work with ICS but if that is any indications of the timeframe.. I don't think CM10 will have everything working any time soon.. but I'm secretly hoping since CM is the only hope at this point..

- The Samsung Galaxy S III's ROM is somewhat ready. As far as we know, everything works (WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, Video playback, Calls, Audio, 3G Data, Camera, ...). It is currently undergoing some internal tests to make sure everything is fine just by installing the update ZIP, so if something goes wrong make sure to blame +Pedro Carneiro ;-) No ETA available, we will release an experimental build when we feel like it's ready, so if everything is fine it could be hours or days, if something goes wrong it could be hours or days or weeks or months or years or centuries or millenniums.
(Oh and don't even think about asking for FM Radio)
- I just started to work on the Samsung Galaxy Note. Codeworkx and Espenfjo already started on the Galaxy S II, thus some of their work profits a lot for the N7000. I'll keep you informed either here or on twitter on how things goes.
- The Samsung Galaxy S II is in a very early state, we got it booting. But since the Note is very similar, that's a lot of shared work between those two devices.
Technically speaking, the "galaxys2" device tree will turn into "i9100" to fit with the Samsung naming convention we used everywhere else in CyanogenMod device trees, and a new galaxys2-common tree will appear.
We really have no ETAs for all these devices, we really go for a "When it's done" approach, even for the S3 ROM. It could be released tonight, the same way it could be released next week. It depends on our free time and on how things go around. As for the Note/S2, there's still many things to do before giving an estimate, so stay patient.
I hope this post will calm down people bugging Hacksung on Twitter regarding Galaxy devices and Jelly Bean ;-)
Back to work!

So it looks like everything is working and they are into final testing . I hope for a release before the end of this month, but let's see! Exciting news for S3 owners!
Yes it certainly is. Second phone in the world to get jellybean?
Makes me feel ok that I just sold my nexus.

3rd phone may be... JB for us variant of s3 just got released.
This makes me very happy! Can't wait to run JB because at the moment, the Galaxy Nexus that I sold to my cousin makes this phone seem slow!
Here's hoping for a release within the next week

I'm really hoping Samsung also get their build out soon. I think they will, seeing as they are now such a huge player in the Android market. There is a lot of users out their now that have bought into their brand, and i'm thinking they're gonna do everything to keep them happy and away from Apple products.
Anyways, in the meantime, we are lucky buggers to have talented individuals in our community making ROMs and builds and generally making us smile.
Nice 1 to all devs.
I heard nov-dec somewhere but mby Im just making it up.

Workin' fine...
I'm truly flabbergasted that the devs have managed to get so much working in such an incredibly short time. Truly very impressive. I done a good bit of coding at university and sorting what seems like pitiful problems takes a lot of time and effort as well as being very frustrating. You guys must be very talented.
I'll probably give it a go, this butter UI project has me very interested. But would love to see ParanoidAndroid rom asap too. (Tablet mode is just awesome)
Well done cm team. I will donate to you guys on pay day next week.

Why is Samsung taking so long for 4.2

If I were them I'd skip it. It's more an incremental than point release and the only substantial feature that it has that 4.1 doesn't is multi-user. Going to 4.3 or 5.0 assuming there's a material difference in features, infrastructure, or functionality makes more sense. Google seems to be updating all their revenue generating apps without tying them to a specific OS version (EG: Google Now) so all their apps should stay current and Samsung can update their’s via Play or Samsung Apps. When you think about it 2>3>4 were huge leaps because Android was so immature. 4.1>4.2>X.X and beyond are likely to be far less earth shattering. Based on user reports, 4.2 had lots of issues with little gain. I'd rather have something stable that works well than something "new" just because it's new.
Yes I hope they skip. Not a fa. Of the newly centered nav keys

Yeah, thats one of the reasons I like the Note 10.1 over the Nexus 10.
4.2 also has a very screwed up Bluetooth stack.. everyone's screaming about it. (Actually, it got screwed up in 4.1.2... uh oh...)

Samsung users their own which is why we have AVRCP 1.3 and AOSP ROMs don't. So we're safe. Kind of sad that OEM's are pushing out more stable s/w than Google. Part of everyone's lust for Nexi is their "pure Google" experience and all the (theoretic) benefits that's supposed to bring.

They kindof screwed up the bluetooth stack. My RAZR has 4.1.2 and it plays media and voice calls well over my ford sync but the MAP isnt pushing my text messages anymore.

Actually... The leaked specs of the Note 8 that's supposed to be announced next month show it to be shipping with 4.2. So I'd imagine the whole "where's my update?" cylcle's about to start all over again.

All devices have 4.1 now. You do not need one for your country, take any 4.1 for your device and simply choose your language at setup, change the standard keyboard language in the settings and all is like in your own country version.

I think that when Nexus devices come out, they get the latest Android version (4.2 here) and they have an exclusive on it for some time. Yes multiuser is nice, but I do not need it.
