Possible bootloader workaround thanks to samsung? - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

So I was browsing the net, and I came across http://www.idigitaltimes.com/articl...alaxy-s3-verizon-bootloader-unlocked-code.htm. This site states that Samsung has released the source code for the Verizon SG3. They also include said zip file for devs to tinker with. Don't know if anyone's seen this already or had time to check it out. Hope this helps the dev scene.
Edit: Was told in a later post it's not for the bootloader, but just source code, hopefully this can be used in appropriation for unlocking our bootloader in the near future.

Downloaded! Good looking out! Hopefully now tomorrow I will have CWR up and running.

Hope this works. great find.

I apologize. The way I understood was that it was the source code for the bootloader, but some source code is better than none eh? Glad to be of assistance. I'm gonna be getting my SG3 in 2 days when they're released to the stores en masse, if they let me get an early upgrade since mine isn't due till the end of the month. Hopefully my link helps the development of better stuff for the SG3

Android 2.1 for the Eris

I heard some rumors flying around of a 22nd release date. Maybe this thread can organize all of that.
?
Yeah...we have all heard rumors and what not.....
Not sure there is anything we can organize or do...
Just wait until the 22nd and hope
My source at Verizon told me that via an internal email 2.0 is coming to the Eris at the end of January. They have not set a date for the release yet, but when they do, I will post an update for everyone.

I was given the Jan. 22nd date also from a Verizon Tech when I was having trouble authenticating my back in the beginning of December. She didn't say what the update would be though.

That was issued to fix one bug. The one where your phone locks up on you at the lockscreen and you have to pull the battery.
There's still one coming on the 22nd that fixes a lot of other bugs. It won't be 2.1.

rooting 2.1 with sense on eris?
i hope i'm not the only one to think of this but:
if firmware 2.1 does come out on the 22nd of january, what does this mean to all the work done rooting firmware 1.5? because i'm pretty sure the problems with rooting the eris is not necessarily with fw1.5 but the sense UI thats layered on top of 1.5
even if 2.1 does come to the eris, it'll probably be a watered down version of fw2.1 because the hardware on the eris is not really optimized for 2.1 and it'll probably have a newer tweaked sense UI built upon the code from 1.5
i hope this is not a draw back but it's something to think about
It depends on the kind of attack we end up using. If we end up attacking the linux kernel directly, I doubt there will be time to plug the holes at this point. The bootloader / updater stuff, though, might be more risky, and I've been wondering about this for a while now. Guess we just have to wait and see which attacks come to fruition.
no kernel source code
i see what you're saying but htc hasn't released the source code for the kernel. i think thats what the senior members of this forum (acidbath5546, ataranine, rigmrt, etc.) are trying to get from htc through those emails. so the method of "attack" must be something else. unless of course those Mod edit: Employees at htc decide to allow us to use our devices the way we want
i'd love to contribute but i'm soo dame busy watching hulu, they've got some great stuff over there
Really, guy?
Either way, the way we're currently attacking it is like this: we know that a vulnerability was discovered on a certain date, and patched on a date after that. Fortunately, both of these dates are well after the date that the current version shipped, meaning that the target kernel must be vulnerable. Obviously this security flaw has been patched, and will do us no good in the future, but at least it's a start in our workflow.
yep

We have been trying...and Htc is sorta hearing us...
I just got word from someone at Engadget Mobile that Htc has heard us and seen the threads and emails..
And like they did on the Hero, they will release kernel code...its just a big machine over there...so we do owe them a bit of patience..
But it is good to know they heard..
Amazing what we can do as a community!

Yeah... I saw that. Little skeptical though because once you trace the source back to handhelditems they say someone got that info from a webchat with Sprint. We all know to think twice about those! lol It does seem to line up with that April 9th update that's been floating around though. Who knows...
Hopefully this is true and not another april fools prank. It was about a week-week and a half ago they rumored it would release in the coming weeks. Fingers crossed.................
With all the sprint leaks we have been getting I think it might be getting close.
But who knows
I already have it thanks damage

don't worry, Sprint will just repackage one of the XDA roms as their own and use it as the official update
ive said it once ill say it again the april 9th update is a maintenance release to fix mms issues not 2.1
sprint hasnt told us anything beyond that
any new news on an "official" release date? im hearing either the 9th or 26th of this month? i don't get why sprint is soo tight lipped about this?
also when is the nexus & evo launching on sprint?
no ONE cares anymore

with alot of tweaking to do after the initial install, yes your right.
i hope when the final comes out and we get custom roms, we won't have to apply any fixes. this is one reason im back to 1.5 for now. i have faith in the devs here, they do great work!
Why do we keep creating threads on this issue. It is a waste of space. It will come when Sprint is ready to release it. They have never given an exact date. People get so pissed because they haven't sent an update. Well guess what. When you bought your phone it had 1.5. They are not required to update it to 2.1. Either use a custom ROM or shut up and wait until it comes out. Then when it comes on don't get on here complaining about how crappy the release is.
I have Fresh 2.0d and it is working very well.
----------------------------
Shut up and wait
Running: Fresh2.0d
Developing:WarpedMetal (T minus 2 weeks)
Just got out of a sprint chat. this is what they're saying
honestly no thread can "waste space" as well we have plenty of it. I wasn't complaining nor *****ing about it. I am more happy with the legend based roms then the leaked Sprint roms but when the official Rom hits it will help with more development to fix issues and get faster roms out there. honestly if you don't like these threads the easy thing to do is stay out of them. no one is forcing anyone to read the forum or a certain posts. forums are for talking that is there main and only reason for existing.
damn I hate trolls.

Does Sprint use any automated responses on the chat support? I know there's quite a few companies that do, the program just selects a basic response to generic questions about that subject, and it seems like the responses that are given by these reports are way too "computery" to be coming from a human. So I'm guessing that the system Sprint's chat support uses has a list of responses pop up based on key words in the client's question.
Probably way off base, but it'd almost make sense based on how similar the responses are in all these chat transcripts.

We need something to spark the dev community for the atrix..

It's been getting quieter and quieter as of lately. I hope they are getting closer to something big or working hard on something, because this is a great phone. Its even encouraged me to start to do a little dev'ing of my own But in the meanwhile I'll just continue to wait patiently
We should see some minor momentum when it launches internationally later this spring.
the devs are most likely using the private forums, which is why its been quiet in the public ones...
i hope
unlocking the bootloader would be the bomb! ... but that's easy to say
I really wish something like this would happen. It such a shame to have the flagship android device on AT&T have such a hard time with devs because of the bootloader.
Hard to see any development until they release source with bootloader unlock. Hopefully gingerbread isn't far off given the Droid x had it released.

Wasn't is stated somewhere that gingerbread would come Q2 or Q3? I can't remember
Hopefully with the next update as well as the current drop in prices through Amazon, etc, we'll see more interest. The locked bootloader is probably a big turn off for most developers though.
So it's April 13th.. Where is that HSUPA firmware upgrade AT&T told us we would get?
Jesus... I didn't know that April 13th was the end of April... These months have sure gotten shorter.
I'm just spit-balling here, but when a company states they'll be releasing an OTA in April, that might mean they'll release it at some point in the month. Not just within the first two weeks.
You might be justified in using that statement the first week of March, but... Nevermind.
Actually, the Atrix's irc channel is very active and devs are working on the bootloader (kholk even stated that he has a method to unlock/bypass it, but he's away until the 2nd of May, so he'll probably test/finish/whatever it when he returns).
I think that devs tend not to post their smaller ideas on the forums now, but rather discuss them on irc as the forums got quite messy with lots of off topic crap...
That would be outstanding...

I think the 2700 dollar bounty is motivation lol. The devs are definitely hard at work on the bootloader. Another alternative would be a web-top, or web only desktop. But markets have not responded to web-only environments. The desktop is a high-productivity mode, not a media consumption mode or a browsing mode. That’s why we’ve brought the full power of a native desktop to this solution.

The other problem is that while Canonical is pushing the build to hardware manufacturers and mobile carriers, it has no plans to release it to the general public for independent development. This means that you won’t see a CyanogenMod ROM with this functionality built into it. While Ubuntu is open source, Canonical plans to control the release of this version. It’s possible that, given the ingenuity of Android users, one day there will be a leaked build, but such a thing wouldn’t be endorsed by the company.

They only have to publish the portions of code which are not proprietary, which we have the majority of, assuming they modded stock Ubuntu.
At least, I think.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing in regards to cm webtop. I also put in a request for source as I'm seriously debating picking up an Atrix JUST for this. This looks like a great platform to develop for.
I was reading around and found an article saying it is open source, but there was no link to the source, nor can I find it.
If I do, I'll post back as well. Hopefully it's out there, if not, crossing fingers they release it.
Has anyone seen the VIDEO yet??
Theyes DID use an Atrix2 as a test mule. And as you can see, it works PERFECTLY. Although they didn't launch any desktop apps (Chromium, GiMP, Libre Office are the ones I'm really on edge for) you can see the deep integration-- to the point where I'm almost sure that they worked in secret and sold a bastardized version of Ubuntu 9 to Motorola. I'd always thought that it was an internal project of Moto's to make webtop… Since Google bought the cow, Canonical seems to be letting the cat outta the back and trying to sell it to the phone industry at large now. However I'd also say two things…
Make an open source version that us gear-heads can sink our teeth into. If they want to create a "fan base" that can get behind their effort, they'd owe it to themselves to jump over here onto XDAdevs and let folks like SamCripp, the Atrix Dev Team, and the CM devs help out. Get folks like me who are crazy enough to use their LAPDOCK as their DAILY WORK COMPUTER (using it RIGHT NOW and I have no webtop even since I'm using CM7 at the moment. I've used nothing but Linux at home for years, so someone like me can shake down their efforts and give them a real-world test.

Cm 13 and M based ROM Discussion

I would like to just set up a thread for any word on CM13 and or any work on M based ROMs for the TMO N4. I did not see one so if there is I apologize and will take it down.
Cm13 is available unofficially for the international verison which I did flash and had bad things happen. I have heard no talk of when we are to expect it for TMO. So hopefully we can remain updated by more informed members of the XDA community.
Im dying to get a feel for it and heard the Cyanogen Team put some nice work into this as they always do.

Unofficially, there is no talk about when it will be released is because it doesn't work on our device yet. There are developers working on it as we speak, but they don't like being asked an ETA. It'll be ready when it's ready. On the flip side, simply discussing what features we'd like to see in Android M could be a nice thread to have. Devs could look here for that if they do choose and see what cherry picks people want.

But I did just see a M system dump as well as a few posts of a member on the international side who is currently working on a TMO version. I believe he has developed some working blobs but has a bit to go.
As for features, i really dont know why we dont have multi window support for CM yet. Ive asked but never got a real answer as to why they always leave it out. For the TMO version id love to see working s-pen. But i hear they did find a way to get wifi calling to work so thats great news if true.

As far as multi-window? CM/Slim 12.1 has something of the sort. But true multi-window is a TW only feature add it is proprietary drivers and tough to get source code on.
As long as I have my battery bar, sliding on status bar for brightness, and CM theme support, I'll be a happy little clam. The rest is just gravy. Would be awesome to have fingerprint support on an AOSP based ROM.

I did see that data is now a function on the INT version of CM13. I did read that finger print is actually proposed to make it. Unsure on the legitness of that one. Im super excited to see progress now. Im just surprised that with M sources released that we see no ROMs built. I have actually attempted sitting down and doing so building. Man is it time consuming. I just took frames from a open project and did some bsic things and was frustrated. Thanks to all the people who take their time to build these things. :good:

I think my signature still says i get a woody over Roms or something....lol
So from what I think i am seeing over in the INTL side is that support for the N4 cm13 has no devs. Wondering if thats true. Anyone have any word on this?

Could be too early to tell. I would imagine devs don't want to be bothered with questions on ETA when things don't work. There's no real way of telling exactly when you make a breakthrough in coding.

Seems we may have a breakthrough. Fingers crossed.
Also, can someone withone with understanding of the process of building roms from a source like Marshmallow tell me something? If there is a system dump, say from Nexus, for M how come it is so hard to turn that into a runnable version for samsung? I know the systems are totally different and we have the TW systems, but as a AOSP source I always believed that turning that around from the code was the reason the codes were released. I started to see that was very wrong back when L hit and the massive bs these devs went thru with that. So is there a easy way to explain the process and why it is so difficult to do for us?

I'm not a coder, but I have an understanding of how this works a little. The biggest reason is hardware differences and getting the coding right to match the software (drivers) to the hardware. With AOSP, the devs have to write coding from scratch for a 'port' from a system dump from another phone. Especially one that's a different brand entirely.
That is about the best I can think to explain it. If I am totally off bass there, a dev could come in and snack me around for spreading misinformation. [emoji19]
