SGS3 torture test - Galaxy S III General

Amazing it survived so much torture ... from CNET torture test video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuq4eocS_GY&feature=player_detailpage#t=187s

Impressive!

I have to say after watching this I can't believe the people who say the phone fell out their pocket and the screen cracked, seems really strong according to this.

Only thing that was impressive was the drop test, I mean the last one was a really nasty drop :/

Well it depends, my S1 dropped no more than a foot out of my shirt pocket onto gravel and the screen cracked,I thimk it must have been bacause it was a point impact i.e a bit of grave as it shattered around a 1cm area but then had 2 diagonal cracks right across. Got it back yesterday as good as new from the repairers, but it gave me an excuse to buy an S3 :

Gotta admit she totally tortured it compared to the ipad.. Well done S3
My name is Optimus Prime and I send this message..

I want them to torture test iphone

i have dropped my phone 3 or 4 times from waist height nothing happened, even it flew in the air from my bed to floor, yet safe . i think the quality is not consistent across.
edit:
in the drop test vide the phone went in the air vertically and came down in the same vertical direction to the ground, if it was horizontal then the results would have been different , lol

My old iphone 3G was a tough little unit, dropped onto concrete from waist height, scraped the back a bit but survived fine. Also dropped onto gravel from waist height again, slight mark on screen but that was all.
So far I haven't dropped the S3 yet, but today it slid off my lap and smacked into my car door then went under the seat while taking a corner hard . Thought it was going to be a bit scraped but survived fine.

Maybe your floor ir made of pillows lol

she has to test the drop test on the road

looks good

I really don't care about extreme heat or cold test, nor water test.. but that drop test... too bad she didn't show how the body of the phone hold up. Is the grey ring around the phone strong enough to resist scratches and impacts too?

Omg that made my laugh (no offense, just to hilarious )
The other night I was texting someone and my friend turned round very quickly and accidentally knocked it out of my hand. It landed on the steel table base, then onto the concrete floor...the battery cover popped off and the battery went walkies, but the screen was completely undamaged and the cover wasn't broken.
I've not dropped it myself, in near a month of ownership thats the first time it's hit the deck.
Only dropped mine once and that was from standing on to........... carpet As you might imagine no harm was done. I dread dropping it on concrete though :S
Mine fell out of my jacket pocket getting out of a train on my way back home on New Years Eve. Thankfully the phone was in it's leather case and it survived without a scratch.
Dropped once on high street using Google maps for directions - Survived unscathed
However sat on my parents couch when over for Sunday dinner and now I have permanent black pressure marks on the middle of the screen Not so bad when the screen is lit up, but now film are unwatchable on it !!!!!
Anyone know how much a replacement screen is? Or if HTC would be kind enough to cover it under warranty?

had mine hit the sidewalk pretty hard, battery came out, but no damage afterward. second hit from 5ft high on a stone tile floor with a metal bar hitting it afterward: screen is ok but little scratch on battery cover finish... a third drop from my pocket in a crowded club, again with no damage at all... im not using a case or cover, so i could say its either pretty solid, or im very lucky

WTF!!! apple employee! lol. dropped mine about 4-5 times now not a scratch on it. never on the pavement. (touch wood)
Use at least the original leather case
I've dropped my love twice. Once when I was capturing photos outside in december - it fell down to snow without leather case, and nothing happened, I just cleaned it up and swaddled it like baby Second time it fell off my jeans' pocket in a gym, about 50-60cm with leather case, and nothing happened. So I can give you just general advice - keep your Lion in leather case while you don't use it
Mine got smashed out of my hand by a friend of mine who didn't agree with the uber-blinding flashlight of my beloved device..
Landed from 6.3ft high on the stone floor. Not a single scratch.

Dropped my DHD the other day :(

It fell out of my pocket while biking.
Chipped the metal case
Has anyone else dropped their phone (I mean serious drops)?
Fortunately not, my friend did drop his iPhone 4 off a bridge whilst taking a photo. A sharp gust of wind blew it out of his hand.
I was laughing for about 2 days.
Yup, dropped mine a couple of weeks ago. Bit of a chip on the top right corner of the case by the screen and a bit of a scuff on the bottom right corner of the sim cover.
Was dropped from quite a height onto a hard pavement, so I'm pleased it didn't come off a lot worse!
Dropped mine too. I was busy attaching it to the windscreen for use as satnav, and my wife called me to help get our son into his car seat (after all this time she STILL can't do it...) I went to assist, but the phone wasn't securely fixed to the windscreen... and, well, you guessed it.
Gutted.
Mine has dropped twice from 50cm ~1.5ft. Bad positioning on the nightstand + groggy first time, and a trip of the lady on the charging cable (phone resting on aforementioned nightstand)..
...two slight chips on the top left corner metal. I'm all about the survivor look, being a Fallout fan, I hate those unwieldy black rubber cases, but it pains me to know that those two little chips are there, right out of sight, mocking me for failing to take good care of my DHD.
And that coming from the guy who used a smashed iPhone 2g for the past 2 years. Cracked yet (surprisingly) fully operational screen, more dents in the metal backplate than you can shake a stick at.
Oh well.
Dropped mine from about chest height onto laminated floor while trying to open a door while carrying shopping, unfortunately it did do something to the internal hardware.
Volume keys stopped working, wi-fi would not turn on and fm radio would not turn on. Case had no visible damage so sent back to HTC under waranty, 20 days later got my phone and its working flawlessly.
dropped mine so many times now but i'm lucky and it just hasnt scratched it
can we have some pictures please
this is exactly the reason I made sure I ordered and received my otterbox commuter series case BEFORE I bought my telus desire hd
only had mine for about a week or so but already dropped it a few times, battle wounds... reminds me of my silver back iphone 1 after a few month, just adds character as far as im concerned.
I dropped mine down a flight of steps on to tiles, man that thing can bounce. It only got the smallest scratch on the top edge where i can see silver but it bugs me every time I look at it but it could have been so much worse without my barely there case or if the screen shattered. If only they sold nail polish in a DHD brown to use as repair paint ...

I don't know about the defender but I ordered a commuter at the same time I ordered my phone and love it. I had one for my iPhone 4. I've not dropped this phone yet *touch wood* but it's a great case and if nothing else it makes the back more even so the camera is less likely to get scratched.

Does it give you the confidence that if you drop it from a considerable height it won't get badly damaged, say 2 feet on a wooden floor?
No drops here (yet), but i remember when i got my first phone. It was 12 years ago, and I, Mini Bazooka, was only 12 years old. I was rocking a brand new Panasonic GD-450. Pretty small back then, but it's about the size of a small grizzly.
I dropped it four floors down, and it landed on the concrete floor. The battery fell off. Nothing more.. Ahh, the good ol' days when a phone was a phone, and not a control center for launching nuclear weapons and baking cookies.

Mine got knocked off a table and fell at least 3 feet onto tile floor and nothing happened. I feel a lot more confident holding the phone and I don't have to worry so much about holding a super thin phone and not letting it drop. The case makes it feel perfect in the hand.

The first time you drop it is always the worst! After that it doesn't hurt so much ;-)
Dropped mine the first time whilst in the toilet. Just managed to deflect it from going down the pan! It landed on the floor luckily and has a marked corner now...
I would buy a case but I really don't like them at all.
I think I had my DHD for about a week before I dropped it, and of course straight into asphalt. It got some nasty scratchmarks on the bottom / bottom left corner. I felt parts of my soul (and wallet) die that day ;(
Bought a gel case the day after, just to prevent further damaging of the DHD case.

A500 Abuse - what can it handle?

So what kind of abuse has you A500 taken so far?
The other night my 3 year old boy was standing beside me saying "daddy look" to which I replied "oh you're dancing that new dance you made up, very cool" but he kept harping on at me and pointing at his feet. After a few minutes of "yeah I can see you son" I finally looked over the coffee table at his feet and there is my A500 on the floor and the wee bugger is dancing on it. So far no problems, fingers crossed. so I'm now well impressed by the build quality.
I dropped mine while in the bathroom, fell on the floor and the case came open on one of the corners. Snapped it back in, but the corner got bent in a little so the shell doesn't fit completely flush. Can't tell by looking at it without closely inspecting it, but I know it's there and that bothers me enough. I have one of those TEP cases on it now so it's unnoticable.

I hope I'll never know what it can handle But with a two and a half year old daughter and one year old son I fear I will... The other day my daughter dropped my wife's iPhone on the marble floor screen down (Murphy's law - works every time) so it's just a matter of time for the iconia.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
dropped mine down the stairs after i was balancing it on a pizza box and it slid off. Of course it was the beers fault.
Back came off, the rotation lock switch came out but it all clicked back into place - i have yet to try and put the auto lock switch back in.
The screen is fine and dandy, but as mentioned above...the back has not clicked back in smooth and has a few added extra curves!
I prefer my A500 to suffer from verbal, emotional and psychological as opposed to physical abuse
Having said that, I do think that the build is ok, my unit has got a little give in the plastic bit, but otherwise no complaints.
I think the whole.its aluminum and will be tougher then those made of plastic is incorrect. Plastic will bounce back or it will break. The metal bends and causes the tablet to not be together as well.there should have also been screws to hold the back on.With that said for me small hands I can hold the tablet easily and it does fell stronger then most.but I do not think it is.if you drop this device it.will have some damage.
Mine to has a corner bent and seem not as tight with creeling sounds from seams at top and bottom.

My 3 year old daughter likes playing angry bird on it and if she can't kill the pig she throws it on floor but surprisingly nothing happened so far. I have never put any protective screen or any casing on it and still when i wipe clean screen it is same as when i bought it. Once it opened a bit from one corner but snapped back upon a little push and nothing more. So i can confirm that it withstands physical abuses much better.

I often use my Iconia during office hour. So everytime my boss pass by, i will quickly cover it with A4 paper.
I thought i was smart to make it unnoticeable, until last week, when my fren was helping me to carry desktop monitor, i totally forgot that my tablet was covered with the paper, and i myself instructed him to put it on my desk, and he did..
He put the monitor right on top of my tablet without noticing my tablet underneath the paper.. its a 24" monitor.. jaw-drop..
seriously, i was expecting at least crack on the screen but luckily nothing happen to it.
So there's something to be said to all of the folks complaining about the weight of the Iconia. My iPad shattered from a 3 foot drop onto the sidewalk. This tablet is much tougher.

You all have been soo lucky!
Mine dropped from the couch one day, and no visible damage occured. The next night I charged it with my windows opened (it was a cool night, about 6°C). At the morning the glass was broken. The LCD screen and the digitizer are working well, but the cover glass ist splitted into two halfs; very bad.
It must have been a failure during assembly, some kind of tightness and the fall and the temparature changes finished my beloved toy off.
I was holding the tab loosely when I was on the escalator in the subway station. Suddenly a man rush down and knocked my tab down (~4 feet). A corner is scratched, but the tab is still functioning well.
Wow, you guys really abuse your tablets. I don't know what mine can take and I hope I don't have to find out!

Wow, I didn't believe the durability of this phone until I dropped it today.

Long story short, I watched the Android Authority videos, the CNET torture test...
But I had to be at Walgreens before 6... and I couldn't find my case...
I am 6'2 pushing 6'3... I dropped my One without a case on it... it flew all over the place... then ended on its face...
There are only minor scratches on the aluminum and one tiny dent... there isn't a single (even microscopic) scratch on the face...
Had I dropped my S3, it would have shattered...
I'm not saying to drop your One... but should you drop it, it will fare better than any phone out there. HTC balanced the phone to the point that unless it is purposely dropped on its face, it will not break...
Keep a case on it... but imagine the horror when I dropped it from my EAR today... a 6' plus fall and just minor dents?
I guess I can put up with the signal issues... Because any other phone would have been dangerous to use because of the shattered glass.
Anyone else have an "I dropped my One and it survived" story?
Didnt the top and bottom speakers fell out? Saw some videos that 2 parts are quite flimsy

I can top that.
I've dropped my One at least three times I can think of.
Once, when on a ladder using 'smart tools' to level my flat-screen TV on the wall, a drop of about 7' in total, bouncing off the ladder step, onto the (natural stone) hearth of my fireplace, and another 1' to the floor.
Once, when hiking in a nearby State Park, the phone bounced out of the holster (must have gotten some shirt tucked into the latch) and onto rocks/rubble/roots, coming to rest screen-down on some pebbles.
Once, while in bed, I 'bobbled' it out of my hand, it bounced off the mattress and onto the hardwood floor.
In all of these drops, thankfully I had both a Seidio 'Surface' case and an SPG/Spigen GLAS.tR screen protector. No discernible damage that I can detect, no scuffs or dings. Speakers are fine, and the camera works as it should - in other words, the optical image stabilization is working fine.
There can be no compensation for the three heart attacks I've suffered, but that's another story.
I was visiting Japan in April this year and had literally only received my One days before as it was delivered the day before I was to go on holiday through EE.
I was visiting a shrine in the Kyoto and walking up a steep hill capturing some video. Just finished recording the video but hands were sweaty and was turning the phone around to put it back in my pocket when it slipped face down and slid down an incline. I'm about 6"1 and my hands were in the air recording the video above my head.
The top of the silver mesh by the front facing camera came slightly away from the plastic and dented the metal and it dented beneath in two places and even took a chunk out of the side of the screen but the screen itself didn't even suffer a a scratch. Of course I was devastated I'd ruined such a beautiful phone but I was shocked by its build quality being so good.
I dropped a One X I had a couple weeks prior and it fell on the bottom edge horizontally causing no damage to the phone at all but completely shattering the screen. On the back of this I was expecting the same or worse from the One but I was totally surprised.
Best phone I've ever owned. Period. It's right to be acclaimed as the best smartphone you can buy right now.
I had one of the worst scares of my life when I dropped my one the first day that I received it.
I was using the stupid plastic bag that cames with the one to protect it from scratches lol. But when I was going to bed it was dark and I holded the one with the plastic bag face down and the one quickly slipped out of the bag
I almost cried when I saw that it didnt had a single scratch probably fell something like 3.5 feet. I was even tempted to ask for a return as I was having very bad battery life and the phone didnt have a single scratch or dent :' )
Yes!
Both times getting out of the truck at the end of the lane to fetch mail. I had it sitting in the arm rest in the door and it fell to the driveway which is coarse tar and chip (crusher run).
Fortunately it was in a Speck Candyshell Grip both times. The first time the case didn't even show a mark! The second time put a few marks on the case. The phone is mint. Both times the phone's final resting place was screen down. Dropping a smart phone is like dropping a cat or a buttered piece of toast. You can wager full retail price replacement on which way it lands!
If you have a carpet on the floor nothing will happen to your phone
But if it fall on cement or asphalt it will break at least the screen
I've been wrestling and phone flew into traffic, no cars hit it, but did bend the lower left corner, crazy ex girlfriend through it through a wall also, landed in living room unscathed .... Both times no cases.

Conclusion - Put it in the biggest and thickest Case ever and even after that DON'T DROP IT

Die Aluminum!
good for you
Unfortunately not everyone is as lucky as OP.
my one is fine thank god but my missus dropped her phone between the cushions on the corner of the couch, result, it hit the base board underneath and dented the side of the phone and the screen now has a single crack right across the screen. Not a great advertisement for a phones durability if it cant survive a six inch drop.
The phone is still perfectly usable and the crack isnt too bad, not too noticeable head on but if viewed from an angle its very visable.

Phone took a spill tonight ...

So I was looking at something on the phone this evening, about chest height. Dropped the phone like it was a water snake, ***** is slippery, once it gets moving, I can not wait till the case for it gets here. I digress ....the phone hit the floor, face down on the deck, deck old is wood, so it was rather hard as it has been beat down by the Florida sun .... From my vantage point here, reading these threads on XDA, it should have shattered. Regardless, I was scared till I picked it up, it twas good, not a scratch or crack, not even a nick.. I hope not to do that again in the near furture,, bit I am comfortable the phone could hang on this instance One solid thumbs up

This is a tad comforting, I'm still trying to decide if I need an tempered glass protector or not (going to use a case). I had my S3 without protector with tpu case for two years. Dropped it alot and it's never been a problem. I'm hoping with protected corners the Z3C will behave the same.
I had the same thing, first day I received the phone, it also fell on my wooden floor. Not a scratch!
