Jelly Bean Discussion Thread [UPDATED 07/11/12 with new FAQ] - Kindle Fire General

This is the official Kindle Fire Jelly Bean discussion thread (as started by myself in order to stop people from constantly opening new threads about it). If you see a newbie asking about it, direct them to this thread.
Please remember that the most stable ROM for your Kindle Fire is the one that shipped with it and that anything found at XDA should be regarded as WORK IN PROGRESS and will have some if not many issues.
Most frequently asked questions...
How do I get my album art to show up in the new library widget?
The library widget only pulls artwork from albums stored on Google Music itself. You can upload your music via https://play.google.com/music/listen , and add album covers within it so that it shows up on your Kindle.
Google Now doesn't work, how can I revert to the Google Search feature?
Go to Settings > Apps (under the Device section) and clear the data in the Google Search app. Open the Google Search app back up, run through the Google Now setup and click Maybe Later.
How can I connect my Kindle under Jelly Bean using USB Mass Storage?
You can't at the moment, but I suggest using Solid Explorer Beta's ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solid.explorer ) FTP feature as a workaround for now.

If you're using Hashcode's ROM you can force the Tablet UI by changing the DPI to 130. I've seen this question asked quite a few times.

130 dpi makes the UI waaay too small.

?
Almost everything is working great on my KF with 4.1.1, except for Amazon apps. I know some people are having trouble getting the Kindle ereader app to install. I get an error ("Unknowon error code during applicatoin install "-24") when I try to install it from the Play store. I've also tried to install from other locations with no success.
Anybody know how to get it working?

Everithing's ok but
Games from market show black screen on start or freez. How to fix that?
In setting turned on all GPU accelerations. Can this make a problem? Cant check, as moved back to 4.03.
Thx a lot.

Everything was fine until Flash stopped working and the weather app shows no weather info.
Working Now
Updated to ICS Flash, strange the GB ver. work for a little whole.
weather working also.

The first time I booted it was blank the whole time and that came up right before it booted. After rebooting a few times, it seems to work normally.

[Q] Does any ROM do all these things for KF

I'm ready to settle down. Sleeping around with different ROMs. On AOKP right now, but seems like not much action or attention given to the KF.
I'm wondering if there is a ROM out there that does the following that I can settle down with:
Has a custom kernel that does O/C, U/C, O/V and U/V.
Volume slider in notification area (AOKP doesn't)
MTP USB mounting in Windows working (AOKP doesn't unless you disable USB Debugging)
Everything works, market applications, good wifi connectivity
Shutdown mods on menu
Nav bar working
Facebook sync
Theme manager
Lots of toggles in notification area
Good lockscreen options
No FC's
Thanks in advance
You can give my rom a go, it has most of the features you listed, just wait about 30 minutes for the updated version to finish uploading then download that.

Thanks, but I'm sort of tired of trying ROM's and then finding out that this and that don't work.
What doesn't work in yours?
Does anyone use a ROM that all that stuff works?
Have you tried gedeROM? I think it has most of that covered, a couple I'm unsure about but it's easy enough to backup your current setup and try it out.

I really do appreciate all these recommendations, but everyone is saying it does most of these things. Is there any ROM that does it all? I just read today that AOKP has stopped support for the KF (Otter they call it). So a lot of AOKP people will need a new ROM that will be developed.
Let me narrow down my list a bit so maybe we can get some specific answers:
Kernel that does overclocking and underclocking
No charging problems, and charge light works
Volume slider in notification area (AOKP doesn't)
MTP USB mounting in Windows working (AOKP doesn't unless you disable USB Debugging)
Shutdown mods on menu
Lots of toggles in notification area
Anyone have a ROM for the KF that includes all the above working?
Some of the things you listed are problems at a kernel level and you won't find any ICS ROM that has all that. You might want to consider a Gingerbread ROM.
^ That. I recommend Gederom.

Screen shots of your Jelly Bean Kindle.

Just installed Hashcodes rom and it is ultra smooth. Before that I was running MoDaCo's rom and that was great also. Although I like Jelly Bean, I find the look a little boring since I've had Android phones for years already. Since I'm not very creative I figured maybe some people would like to show off some screen shots of their setup.

I actually prefer the new phone-ish UI to the proper-tablet version. I don't use the default launcher though, I use Apex—but keep it portrait-only like the default launcher. I like my screens in a certain way, widgets and all, and it's just a pain in the ass to try to make them work in both modes. Anyways, these are my screens, from leftmost to right. Number 03 is the main homescreen.
Here is mine. It's the same as it was on 4.0

Like the stock rom if the app is in the amazon app store they show up in high res. The only exceptions are kindle fire only editions which don't show up as available from the appstore and I guess they aren't pulled properly from the server. FYI, I used Titanium backup to restore my apps, and even then the high res icon from kindle fire editions do not show up.
Only wish the prime videos could be played on roms other than the stock..

No harm in waiting. I'm in the same situation as you, finally found an ICS ROM that has everything to my liking. I went through 4-5 and found a showstopper issue (for me anyhow) on all of them, then moved on, always reverting to gedeROM 1.7 as my daily driver. Recently tried twa_priv's ICS ROM and it's better for me because I can switch the sides for the notification bar and Netflix sound is loud enough to actually hear. Those were 2 issues that bothered me on gede's ICS ROM. I imagine one of the JB ROMs will be to my liking here shortly but in the meantime I'm perfectly happy with ICS with the SGT7 enhancements.
One thing I took the time to do when I would find myself in TWRP in a flashing frenzy is that I would test the 2-3 backups of previous ROMs to make sure I was comfortable with actually being able to restore versus having a nasty surprise of a bad backup. Later today I'll have my ICS ROM custom configured well enough to call it my new daily driver, run a backup, wipe it and test the latest and greatest JB ROMs from Lithium76 and twa_priv. Once I give them the quick run-through looking for issues I know irritate me in particular, I'll either start working on more testing or revert to the ICS ROM I just backed up. Maybe not the best way to do it but I learn something new everyday and knowledge is a good thing, right?
My dumb question of the day: ICS and JB charging issues... is this global for the Android mod world or is it a Kindle Fire thing only?
Jandycane! Pretty smooth so far.

Volume in Notification

Most of the Jelly Bean 4.2 ROMs seem to be using phone mode instead of tablet mode, and since our kindle fires don't have volume rockers, I think you might like this app that I've been loving so far.

Post your custom ROM experiences

I figured I would start a thread since I couldn't find one devoted to posting our personal experiences with ROMs for our Kindles.
I have tried 3 separate roms out thus far.
CM 10.1 (JB 4.2.2)
This was my first dive into custom roms for my first gen Kindle Fire, and it was a pretty easy transition. Really enjoyed freeing up the device by not having to have the stock Kindle firmware. Apps ran far more quickly and smoothly. After using this for a while I yearned for something faster/smoother. (probably need to get myself a higher powered device to improve on that). Somewhat missed the lack of an Amazon Video app. It's too bad Amazon has not yet developed an app for other Android devices that we can install. A minor issue (with all roms) seems to be the boot animation. It starts out stretched and in the upper right region of the screen at first and then corrects itself maybe 10 seconds later and is centered. Not a big deal of course. The only drawback for me personally with this one is CM's lack of customization.
JB 4.3 Barebones
I had read that JB 4.3 ran a bit quicker (and used more battery) than 4.2.2. I found this to be the case. Especially when using an app like Flipboard this is apparent. The boot time seemed to be a bit longer than CM 10.1, but that could very well be my perception. I did find that the build I was on seemed to give me issues on restarts. I'd restart and icons would be missing and the icon themes I was using with Apex would have to be reset. Mild annoyance that I didn't enjoy dealing with. Overall I was mildly satisfied and preferred CM 10.1 to the specific (early) JB 4.3 that I was using, despite the fact that CM ran slower.
AOKP (JB 4.2.2)
Just installed this one tonight. Coming into this, I was already a big fan of AOKP 4.2.2 as its my daily driver on my Droid Razr M. Love AOKPs customization. Anything beyond AOKP level customization is overkill for my taste. AOKP just has everything I'd need in that department. I did notice that I feel like I'm back to CM 10.1 speed which I may or may not settle on. A minor issue I found was the screen rotation glitch (which I have heard is found in few different ROMs.) It's nothing too major, but it may be enough of a nuisance to get me to switch in the future. We'll see. I do prefer AOKP 4.2.2 over CM 10.1 strictly due to AOKPs level of customization. If you are simply looking for a ROM beyond stock and not necessarily looking for great options and customization, I'd say go with CM 10.1 (If you don't have your heart set on JB 4.3, that is). But my personal favorite of the 3 would have to be AOKP. I have not used this long enough to properly test the battery life compared to CM 10.1.
I hope this helps any noobs like me who are giving flashing roms a thought. Would love to hear what you all are finding for the best speed and battery life. I'll post any updates for roms that I try in the future.
Summary:
Best Battery - CM 10.1
Best Speed - JB 4.3 Barebones
Best Customization - AOKP 4.2.2

I'll check it out thanks! How does battery life compare with the others you've tried? I'll take speed over battery life at this point though. So definitely giving it a shot, thanks!

Thanks for starting this thread! I've been trying find a jelly bean rom that doesn't suffer from low memory app crashes. Like when the browser just quits suddenly and drops you to the home screen. Well just as you mention it, BAM! That's exactly what I'm experiencing now with AOKP 4.3. Lots of browser crashes and keyboard issues where it will not pop up. Rom is still a decent bit quick, but I may be looking to downgrade from JB 4.3 to something that won't have minor issues such as browser crashing. Need a good daily driver with good speed and battery life. AOKP 4.2.2 didn't have the browser crashing.

Basic question, but have you done a weekly wipe of cache and dalvik cache in recovery? May be worth a shot if it took a month for errors. I always do a cache and dalvik cache wipe once a week on my phone. Seems to keep it running smoothly.

I've had my kf for about 3 months and while i haven't flashed them all i have flashed lots of them.
Unfortunately, i haven't found any rom either with or without gapps that have the low memory/ram issue.
I have done lots of searching an just plain tinkering with everything from freezing everything possible in stock roms to only having 2 user apps installed, i.e. dolphin browser and adobe flash player.
The only thing i really want to do is to be able to let my grandson and nefews/nieces watch cartoons on the net, and maybe some simple type kids games. (This way they have their own and dont mess with mine lol)
The games I've found and installed and they work fine, but the memory on this thing is just not capable of even rudimentary multitasking.
Its a damn shame too, because just an extra 50 - 100 mb of ram would make the difference.
Wish i knew how to dev a kernel id look at the big memory kernels on the gnex and see if he same principles could be applied.

Basic question, but have you done a weekly wipe of cache and dalvik cache in recovery? May be worth a shot if it took a month for errors. I always do a cache and dalvik cache wipe once a week on my phone. Seems to keep it running smoothly.
I am also running CM 10.1 now. Really like it so far. Smoothest running rom I've tried for the Kindle.

No problem! Hope it does the trick for ya. I'm using TWRP and it's fairly easy in that.

Interesting. Going to try giving that one a shot then! Haven't yet found the daily driver. Do you have a link to that version you're running?

I found it in the link below in the op. Unfortunately it wasn't as stable as I remembered and I moved on to the latest cm M release. Pretty good so far, but I doubt it fully solves any problems mentioned.

Hey thanks again!
I activated halo by mistake but am not able to deactivate it. I went around the while settings panel, but couldn't find an option.
Any ideas

Ok I'm quickly tiring of my Kindle running unbearably slow at the benefit of battery life. Which Rom, any version of android, works the best on the Kindle Fire? I'm talking smooth. I'm running 4.3.1 CM 10.2 and I just can't do it anymore. If I have to downgrade to an earlier version of Android I will. I just need faster. I've got a Nexus 10 ordered, but keeping this and want it at it's best. So what's the fastest?
Here is a thanks for speeding up my rom...

I tested all the three rooms, all well.
Make sure you have the latest twrp 2.6.3.1 or you will be bricked.
Good luck
