Recovery can't mount sd card - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

For some reason while the phone is on, it recognize my sd card. But when I try to flash a rom, the recovery won't mount my sd card so I can select file to flash.
Also, in using a 64 gig scan disk that I formatted before I put any files on it

I had the same problem. I had used Odin to flash it back to stock and then I rerooted and flash the Rom. I had a bad download that messed mine up. But just Redland stock through Odin and try again it works well it worked for me.

That's because you need to format your card to FAT32. CWM won't recognize exFAT.

format your micro SD card in another phone or one of the market apps or try a did card. Fat 32
Tried that, no luck. Anything else?

troubleshoot
Use a different microSD card - does issue still happen? If so, it's probably not the MicroSD card. If not - problem solved, the card is the issue.
Does the other sd have to be inserted permanently or can it just be inserted for flashing only?
also if I format the sd card on CWM is it formating the internal card? or the external card???

You can use it for flashing a rom image only, no need to keep it in the system after applying a update/rom to the a500.
You can also flash a rom from USB key if you have one (FAT32 is a must).

Are you using the mount option in CWM? If so, that's for mounting the SD card on to a connected PC as a disk drive...
If not, and no external SD cards are working for you, you can also use a USB memory stick as mentioned above.
I used another sd card all is well now, last question didnt get an answer for,
In CWM does formating sd card mean formating external or internal sd?

A common problem. CWM seems to be quite sensitive to cards. You can either try reformatting it in a PC or other Android device, or try a different card.
thanks, i reformated it to ntfs, then fat32 to no luck..i see it fine in my skyrocket...ill try reformatting again
reformatted back to fat32 now is working..thanks

I think the phone will do whatever is needed. I plugged in my new Sandisk 64GB card into the phone and it recognized it immediately, and mounted it a second or so later. Working great.

i formatted mine before i ever plugged it in.had issues with them not reading in the past so i just do it now to keep from running into problems
thanks guys. can I format it directly on the phone?

you can as long as the phone reads it if it does not don't worry should work fine once you format via computer..... I have a 64 GB micro in my phone and no issues but formated it on my computer good luck!
There are some kernels that won't recognize the exFAT format that most 64GB cards come with. ExFAT is proprietary from Microsoft. Stock kernels work. I kept having trouble, so I formatted my card to FAT32 on my computer. The only real limitation is FAT32 only allows files up to 4GB.

What should I format it to... The phone recognizes it and then promptly says remove SD card

Flash a different kernel such as kt's latest or put in your computer and reformat as fat32. I had this same problem and either of these methods will fix.

Are you on the stock ROM or custom ROM? (specifically the kernel)
If you are on the stock ROM, try to insert it into the phone, and if it says "remove sd card", ignore that and instead, mount it (settings, more, storage, scroll to the bottom - mount sd card). It should work after that.
If you are using a different kernel, you will need to find out if it supports exFAT. If not, you may only be able to use as FAT32

External SD card not recognized by AOSP roms

Hi all,
I'm loving AOSP roms on this phone, but I can't get them to recognize my 64gb external SD card. It just says "blank SD card" when I try to mount it. TW roms have no problem with it. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Its bc of the format on the sd card I believe fat32 is supported and exfat is not

Yeah, I ended up reformatting the card to Fat 32 and now it works like a charm. CM looks awesome on this screen and runs faster than CM on any other phone I've used.

Thanks! Formatted to fat32 and my 64gb micro sd is functioning now using Carbon (ASOP) on Galaxy S3.
For anyone with this problem and don't know what software for Windows to use... EaseUS Partition Manager worked like a charm for me.

Ext SD card problems

Hi all,
Can anyone help me with this problem?
I have a 32GB class 10 micro sd card and I have used it from s3.. when I went to put the card in my s4.. I was restoring some games from Titanium Backup and there is toast msgs saying External SD memory left 1.78mb..
How can it be if my card still have a storage of 25GB not used? Is the datas of the games in another partition or if I would need to format my sd card? To FAT or Exfat?

Look in the TWRP and or CWM folders and sub-folders on your external sdcard,
most likely you have many nandroid backups in those folders.
Or perhaps you have a lot of recorded videos on your externel sdcard.
If worst comes to worst copy all files and folders from externel sdcard to computer
and then remove the sdcard, connect it to computer and use this fat32 format utility
to reformat the card.
