Black Level Color Depth not Deep Enough ????? - Galaxy S III General

Hey There..
just got my s3 a few days ago, pebble blue vietnam june batch..
Ok now there has been a lot of discussion regarding screen issues like:
1. Tints
2. Ink spots/blothces
3. Black Crush
4. Black/other color Clipping
5. Depth of Black level
I dont have problem 1... Just 2-3 tiny ink spots, so even problem 2 is negligble....i dont have problem 3 and its can be tweaked with software even if one has it..problem 4 i dont care about much...
So, my area of concern is the 5th problem, i.e when compared to an sgs2 or sgs1 , i find that the black levels are not as deep and super black as the former two phones !
Its not really noticable in normal lighting..please check the following in a very dark room or completely dark room...
Using a pure black wallpaper (attached below or use ur own true black wallpaper) , just open it in gallery, it seems extremely dark grey (almost black) and u can tell where the display meets the bezel...
well, even on sgs2 n sgs1 on pure black background, u could see a little backlight, so not perfect black, which is understandable....so here is where the main problem comes...read below..
on a sgs2 or sgs1, When there is text or icons or other stuff over a pure black backgorund, this time the blacks appear black (obviously its due to contrast difference producing the illusion of super black) and one cannot tell where the screen border ends n the bezel starts, it just blends due to the super blacks! This is what i love and want !!
However, this is not the case with my sgs3, the damned blacks still are not perfect black & i can see where the screen borders end and distinguish the bezel & the screen , they dont blend beautifully!
to experience this, in a dark room, on any brightness level, preferably test at 30% screen brightness cause thats what we normally tend to use indoors, atleast i do...
please use this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJO88Qhxwv4
(Thanks Tinderbox UK for the link)
or
play and high quality Dexter(Serial) video and see the part right before the intro theme where it says “SHOWTIME presents” (in white text) over a black blackground...
or
In youtube app when any video loads n the black screen comes with loading circle
or
use the pure black wallpaper with few icons on ur homescreen...
in the above cases, u should see pure black and u should not be able to tell where the screen n bezel borders meet..which is what u get on sgs1 n sgs2 screens..and i dont get this result on my sgs3 :-(
On sgs3, its almost black, but u can notice its very slightly gray ! so this is annoying to me since im so used to it appearing deeep black on the sgs1 n sgs2 !
--- So now what i need u guys to tell me is whether most sgs3 panels have this issue or is it just me ???
--- Will software tweaks like Supercurios upcoming “Display Expert” solve it by adding some black color depth adjustment ??
--- Should i take this to the Service Center? but prob is how will i show them the problem in a bright environment ?? and what if they tell me that the super amoled HD variant for the sgs3 is a new tech n differnt from the sgs1 n sgs2 screens and hence not as deep blacks ??
I WANT BLACK man !! i LOVED SuperAmoled cause if JET BLACK !! Help please!

this has been already experienced by many and so far none of the display experts has answered it or havent found the answer yet. in pitch dark environment the screen will look greyish black rather than pure black. i had the same on my s2 too but with a lesser margin.

hey Bala thnx fr replying, but wht im saying is tht, in ur gs3, dont u think its more grayish ?? iv listed the different conditions ...can u check n see?? im not talking about a plain pure black bckground which i agree is a lil grayish n is normal, but im talking bout black with other content on the screen....due to contrast differences n other colors from the non-black content, the black appears actual black as i had in sgs1 n sgs2, but in sgs3, it still does not Appear deep black

i dont thinks so mate, apart from the overall greyishness in full black conditions, i feel the blacks are good enough in images, video etc.
One more thing ,the feel of greyish black in pitch dark conditions may also be due to the fact that the screen border is dead black which makes us feel that the screen is not black enough. sgs2 didnt had this screen border afaik.

Are you looking at your phone the right way. You should be looking it at like this:

Yes it is good enuf, but after seeing it much more black on sgs1 n 2, i just cant seem to ignore this trivial issue....hmmm, maybe u have a point there about tht black border, its present all the time right ?

the black border is there always, you can see it from the home screen itself

I am having the exact same issue (or experiencing the exact same ''feature'') What i mean by this is that my SGS2 was pretty much pitch black, this one, not so much, I don't believe it's a ''problem'' though... probably made this way, although I REALLY liked the JET BLACK of the previous Super Amoleds...

yes i really wish the previous experience was there....but some ppl are saying they have real blacks with their sgs3 panels also...so i was wondering if its only for a certain batch of phones...
I want some big name devs to comment on this..if its software related n can be improved...then i wont fret about it so much...
some users in gnex forums said that maybe the voltage levels to the the 720p HD screens are lil higher and hence maybe the blacks are not completely dim, n emitting a lil light..
dam, i want some expert analysis on this !!

Depend on your way using smartphone . With me, almost time not using in dark inviroment, so I please with S3 screen .
Of course, display poor black in dark inviroment will be like dark/black gray . S1 seem better

The fact that Samsung still have this issue on the S3 indicate that it's a bigger problem that we(the Gnote Owners) anticipated,I was thinking that this problem was only localized to N7000.it's the same sh*t with Gnote but yours is just a bit less noticeable or Samsung tried working on it but failed

Damn ...so it seems llike most of Samsung's amoled HD displays have this issue...but still the poll on first page is 50-50...means some phones are perfct ...that's the annoying part...if all were with this issue I wouldn't be complaining that much...

This is true, so do you have an idea how we can tackle this problem, cos we need solution asap

I loved my SGS2 pure black screen...the next SGS4 will have black worse than HTC One XX of the year 2013 LOL did anybody contact author of display expert??? Maybe its possible to somehow lower the voltage of turned off pixels (black color) to do not emit to much light...

Display has a pink tint!!

Please help! I just bought the Bell galaxy s 2 today and realised that in low brightness settings screen has a pink tint.
Does anyone have this issue? Its more visible in grey colors. When i compare with my galaxy s, galaxy s' whites are true white and galaxy s 2's white are pinkish tint on it. When the brihhtness is at %100 its not that visible but once u set it %0 it becomes pinkish.
Is it what it suppose to be or its defective?
Note: yes i played with background effect but it didnt help. I am running KG2.
Edit: I compared with galaxy s again and if I make the brightness %100 on galaxy s 2 both screens almost identical (although SGS2 still has little warm whites) but at %0 brightness when I pull down the notification screen sgs2 has literally pink hue
Why not anyone comment on this? 100 something views and no comments?
U guys all have sgs2. pls at least share your phone's display colors so I can know if something is wrong with mine.
Yep got it to and also pink on camera also mine going back to Amazon tomorrow had two in a week with same problem Ive got one ordered from another retailer ... but I think its a inherent fault

Are you saying your whole screen looks rather pinkish ? I've seen couple of devices that were pretty much reddish when showing white, but i think that's not normal. You should replace it.

Yes whole screen has a reddish tint. Especially grey colors. Instead of grey it displays reddish. If i compare Gmail app with Sgs side by side, my screen has ridiculously pink color.
I wonder if its a software issue or hardware? Cuz I remember in sgs hardcore's kernel he made an.option to change the colors.
This is my second sgs2. First one had a dead pixel. So I didnt wanna go right away and change it. I wanted to ask yours.
More input will appreciated.
I uploaded a pic SGS and SGS2 side by side displaying Grey Graident Colors. what do you think?
If your phone looks like the one on the right, get it replaced. No rom/firmware will make it look good.

I'd take the lack or response to mean that it's not a problem experienced by many people. If your read the threads talking about the display, you'll see there's wide variations in color temperature. Cool/blue seems to be normal while there are reports of phones leaning toward warm/yellow. Pink hasn't been reported a lot so I'd exchange the phone.

My girlfriend and I have the same german sgs2 (dbt) and mine has a bit of a greenish tint whereas hers had a but if a reddish tint. You can't notice it when using the phones alone but when you put them side by side you can notice it a little bit, but really not that much. Seems to be an AMOLED thing. Maybe I'll manage to take a photo for you.

Thanks a lot for that image. I have been wondering what people were talking about when they mentioned pinkish screen...
Luckily I don't seem to have that problem. It seems like there are a few defective screens out there.
perhaps supercurio will have a voodoo colour fix with the sgs2 whenever he releases it. It fixed the tinge on the original sgs. Look it up if u are unfamiliar with it
I changed the phone today and got a new one. Its better now and significany less pink color.
Also I discovered something that the pink tint is only visible when u look at the screen 90 degrees. If u tilt the phone a little (5-10 degrees) to left-right or up-down and view like that the color turns normal (like my year old sgs).
It made me realise that this is a screen coating issue (maybe coating causes polarisation). So do u think this will go away with the time of use?
When I turn off the screen and check it under light by tilting I can see a little purple glare.
What do u think?

Galaxy Note Screen Is not pure black

Hi
My GN black screen is not deep black it's a weird scratched gray-scale, i painted it and you can see what i see in a 100% dark room.
it's not a wallpaper issue i can see it in boot screen and even in LCD test ( *#0*# ) vibration (black) test.
what's wrong with my phone? is it a general problem or it's upon my chance?

please use the search function, there are a LOT postings/threads regarding this!
in short:
its a "normal" AMOLED behavior to be NOT completely dark when the screen is active (even when displaying a black image or even nothing), but:
the quality differs massively between devices, some have more darker "blotches" and lines, some less...
you have to distinguish between two things:
.) amoleds are not completely dark when the screen is active
.) due to quality issues there are deviations (blotches and lines) which are little darker then the rest of the "faintly glowing" screen. some more, some less!
and now: search and read!

it's a common problem for most note\SGS2\Nexus owners ,it's faulty screen
note:
1.All SAMOLED screens display non pure black ,100% black is an urban myth.]
2.healthy AMOLED panels should display black as an even deep grey.
3.some panels have these sketches and\or blobs when displaying total black ,it is a manufacturing defect but nothing too serious to worry about in everyday use.
if it bothers you (the lines) then have it replaced under a warranty ,though you may end up with something worse after that.
EDIT: @TML1504 you've beaten me to it .lol
nothing is perfect
Thanks Dudes,
i did search for this issue but i couldn't find anything about these weird sketches lines , when i bought this device i thought it's a company logo for advertising s-pen
i checked for other peoples issues and my device just have this black issue, so if it's common i'm not unhappier than others.
i was disappointed of GN because of bad video playback (square black) and some hanging on bluetooth share music and etc but there is no perfect device in the world.

well actually the sketching have nothing to do with bad video playback ,the square black clipping is sammsung's faulty drivers ,updating to ICS should fix about 80% of the issue.
also supercurio is working on an app that should fix it ,so keep your hopes up.
WARNING: Read the sticky announcement regarding ICS ,as all official ICS ROMs have the ability to brick your device.
only CM9 is safe at the moment
Same issue with me...!
I have the same problem and also went to the service centre for the the same, it's a normal behavior and you are not the only one who is suffering from this. I saw lot of Galaxy Note models some have much more dark spots some have less, it's purely on your luck what you got.

Go into the darkest room you can find in your house.
Boot into recovery
Put your hand infront of the blue text.
See how it's not 100% black? Now take your hand away and it will all appear totally black.
my problem is not with completely black or gray screen.
my phone panel shows some lines and sketches (looks like s-pen trail as i attached) and blobs.
i checked another galaxy note and see that's panel display is even gray without any sketches.
i think they tested the s-pen before they install gorilla glass
My phone looks completely black when the screen is on and I just have a black wallpaper. Also, when it is booting up, completely black. I've read several things on here about people having problems with the screen, but I have absolutely no problems. The thing about AMOLED that I have read is it CAN in fact be true black when nothing is shown on the screen. Say for instance the Galaxy Note boot logo, all around it should be pure black. That's what's awesome about this display. If it's not, its a faulty display, end of story.
should i use warranty to change my phone?
how i prove this issue to that guys?
I am in auto brightness, dark zones on my screen look really black I think.

yes that's the impression you get while looking at any AMOLED screen ,but trust me ,none of them are 100% black ,and I've seen at least three and tested them thoroughly .
to test you need to be somewhere dark ,under a blanket in your dark bed room is an excellent choice for this.
then turn on the display and show a black wallpaper ,or the blackscreen test by samsung.
let your eyes adjust to the darkness for a while then turn the screen off ,you should notice it going off and see that it's darker now ,turn it on again and you'll see some light come out of the screen.
you need a bit of concentration but it's there believe me.

GS3: Viewing Angles and bluish tint

Hi everyone. After GS1, GS2 I've bought GS3.
Really disappointed for the viewing angles (on whites/grays), the worst I've aver found in amoled/ips lcd recently.
As I tilt the screen 15-20 degrees (normal use movement exspecially when you write/use it with one hand) during mail, web, whatsapp all the whites begin to show a sort of polarized/light blue reflection that seems to be caused by Gorilla Glass/amoled interaction. Very very annoying and tiring for my eyes, and of course not beautiful to see on a 600€ 4,8" display.
On Italian forums I have to say 90% of users experienced this, but maybe in my GS3 this effect is more prominent, difficult to say, I cannot compare by now.
I'd like to have feedbacks from you, don't know if return it and buy a new one.
Cheers.
Im swapping mine in store for the same reason.

Hi.
Is the new one replaced better?
I never understood why viewing angles were a problem. You're using your phone wrong if you need to view it at a 20 degree plus angle.

Never had viewing angle issues with past phones. Never.
With this GS3 simply cannot move it, or I have a blu reflection.
Just want to know if it's just mine.
It's the same with all amoleds ...but I don't think it affects the usage that much and it's only noticeable on plain white backgrounds ...
Haven't been to swap it yet. Im going tomorrow i'll let you know. Been having call issues were it sounds like I've gone under water about 1 min into some calls.

I have exactly the same thing on the lower part of the screen. The grey's temperature is "colder" than the rest of the screen. If you test the screen with "*#0*#" with the three diff colours is fine, the "issue" is only with white and grey background.

I see but the thing is i had sgs1, two sgs 2 ( white and black), two galaxy nexus (white and black), all of them had a blue tint when viewed at an angle .... Though I also know many have said that they don't have tint but I never got any galaxy without tint just my luck I suppose... Htc one x slcd2 doesnt have that issue but battery life is too poor on it that's why got sgs3...sgs3 is superb in every way..

This sound quality issue sounds very much like a problem described in other threads.
Perhaps you have already seen this, but if not, be aware that the problem has been solved by the majority of people simply by switching OFF the "noise reduction" feature under "Call Settings" (it's set ON be default)
Thanks for the reply but I had seen the other threads and switched off noise cancellation but still suffered from the "underwater" problem
Thanks

Sorry for the delay
Sorry for the delay in replying to this thread. I have just got back from the Carphone Warehouse where I checked four different Pebble Blue S3's...guess what.....They all had a Purple tint to them.
When They where first booted up they looked "OK" but when I turned the brightness all the way up and open a white webpage like google you could see a purple hue/tint to the screen but it looked fine when you look at it straight on,
I only have another 4 day before I can exchange mine for a new phone, seriously considering getting a HOX instead at this point. Or failing that sitting in a Samsung Service centre until I find one that doesn't have this awful tint.
I'll keep posting on this thread if I manage to find ones without the tint but I've got a feeling that the CPW UK has got a bad batch in at the moment.
My screen seems okay in regards to tint overall but the top 20% of the screen or so is bluer othan the rest and it gets gradually worse as you get to the top edge. At first it didn't bother me so much but now it's starting to get annoying =(

Screen smearing on galaxy S5's as well

Well i just noticed the dreaded screen smearing/purple haze on my new note 3 when i had the brightness turned all the way down, so i decided to check my new S5 and guess what its there too!
FU samsung how can they not pick up on this???
Yes there are fixes but it shouldn't be happening in the first place if you want to test yours out download the pic below, set brightness to 0 and zoom in on the pic and you will notice pink/purple smearing between the black and grey colours when moving the pic around.
Hmm wonder why they made all the menu bars green? now you know.
Don't see any problem in mine.

You need to have the screen brightness all the way down and make sure your looking real closely.
Out of the S4, note 3 and the s5 Samsung has seemed to make it the less noticeable on the S5.
What you could be seeing is the after image of the screen. You're seeing pink shade because of the way RGB is showing the color grey. You're seeing smearing because you could be moving the image around quite fast and the display is not fast enough to trail your fingers.
I followed your instructions and could see nothing that you are speaking of.
I have also previously owned a Note 3 and did not experience any "purple smearing" either.
In my opinion you are grossly overreacting.

I started the "infamous" thread over a year ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252445
Despite some thinking it was a software issue, it's simply a hardware issue with the panel.
The smearing occurs due to the native refresh times of the panel when going from completely off to dark shades, I.e black to greys etc.
The reason it wasn't an issue on older amoled screens was that the pixels were not completely off when displaying black, which is why in a dark room you could see a glow to blacks and also the "infamous streaks and blobs".
On the newer samsung amoled screens black is completely black, the pixels are not illuminated.
Samsung are just using cheap panels.
I spent a lot of money on an oled samsung tv there was the same issue. Putting a film on like sin city would highlight it. I returned the tv.
^S5 is the latest, so it's definitely new. So, was it really the panel?
What application requires one to view a dark grey image at 0 brightness zoomed in at 100%?
Come now, this thread is surely to attract the likes of trolls, or have I missed something?
I have no smearing, probably its all in your shorts lol.

Ok lets be realistic, the people saying their S5's are not doing it are ether one of 2 things,....
1. Plain stupid and don't know how to adjust their phones display to reproduce the smearing, example: "homer285 What application requires one to view a dark grey image at 0 brightness zoomed in at 100%?"
2. or in denial and don't want to believe their perfect s5's could have such a flaw.
Because all S5s and note 3s for that matter are all shipped with the same display hardware tech, and no you don't have some super special s5 that has different hardware from everyone else cause your awesome .
Now saying that there are fixes for the problem, one can use a screen colour adjuster to keep the "off black pixils" turned slightly on witch helps big time but kills ur battery dead.

Not black on whole screen, but you may see pure black parts when you watch videos that are not on HD scale. Also, around 95% of movies have at least one dark or low-light scene.

Most of us are neither of those two. Just because you experienced it, it doesn't mean that everyone has. Phones are not made in a single batch/production date. It's impossible to produce millions of S5 in a single day anyway. All products sold internationally have the so-called batch date/number to trace possible problems. My previous S3 have the black blotches when screen is dark and viewed under very low light, but my friend's has none. Now, my S5 doesn't have any screen problems.

Have fun with your "smearing" lol
I can confirm this too on my SM-G900F 16GB model... The Note 2 and S3 i owned didn't have this, but the S4 does and now the S5 also....
When having a black background (and lowered brightness) you'll notice it when swiping through the homescreen pages.
I don't know what causes this but i doubt it can't be fixed, yet Samsung continuous playing it their own way by ignoring the problem (the 'anti-smearing' update they once released was a joke)
This should only be a problem at night or in low light environments(typically when screen brightness is very low). I'm pretty sure it's a hardware limitation of Pentile AMOLED screens with the diamond sub pixel matrix, and thus affects all GS5's at low/very low brightness levels.
I've suggested this a couple of times on here, I'll say it again: 1.Change the screen mode to Cinema or Pro Photo.
2. (More importantly) Download Lux(free) and change the White Balance to Fluorescent. This slightly tints the blacks, and greatly reduces the smearing effect.

The S3 had a PenTile AMOLED screen and it wasn't affected by this. AFAIK it's due to the Diamond Pixel layout Samsung uses on the latter Galaxy series.

Your right. I had that in mind, but was confusing Pentile and the Diamond pixel layout as one and the same. My mistake.

wow, pathetic. I hate all the BS threads about how samsung screwed us on the screen. Basically, by saying to turn down the screen all the way down and looking closely, in a dark room, you are asking somebody to look for a problem that never happens in a real world scenario anyways? WTF is up with all the people looking for problems in technology? Honestly, why in tha hell do people always try to find the tiniest this and the smallest that in every piece of tech they own and then bash the constructor for it, things that in the first place only appear in VERY SPECIFIC SCENARIOS THAT YOU NEVER ENCOUNTER IN REAL LIFE?

NEXUS 6 yellow tint fix For the meantime !:D

i hope this help for people whos yelling in the screen because of display ..
Download the Screen adjuster to play store ..
And set to Red 3 green 12 Blue 24 .. now it looks bright ,, but i cant promise that this will fix the yellow tint . because we have different Phones ..
Im just helping you all out .. and i hope you'll appreciate .. this is for the meantime ..
and by the way ,, you will notice the difference color between the screen and navigation Bar ! ..
It makes the screen more cool than warm. It's a nice workaround until rgb and gamma comes.

so did you test it ?? is it good ?? also I noticed when you tilt your phone ?you'll see the the true brightness . but when the screen is in front of you .. it becomes tint .
I tried it but I'm still not satisfied with the screen I'm starting to think its just the type of screen that they used..if you tilt the phone to the right or the left the screen looks a lot better but soon as you look at the screen straight forward you see the ugly yellow tint on the screen.I have seen this on 4 different phones.. Thinking of going back to my G3...very disappointed with screen they used on this phone..
I don't think its the screen but rather the screen setting they used

Correct... and the viewing is subjective depending on what phones we've came from. Coming from IPS, were used to whites being whites whereas AMOLED it isnt that case since AMOLED has richer blacks.
The N6 is just a "warm" temperature when it comes to screens.

yeah . this is just for a meantime .. I hate it too .. also the nav bar .. youl notice the difference .. I might return this and go for g3 .. the g3 is great qd . I like the note 4 but I hate touchwizz.
Looks horrible on my screen. You lose "true blacks" with this color temp and looks washed out, which is funny because that's what IPS displays usually look like when compared to OLED tech.
I guess it's all what your accustomed to already, anything else just looks wrong after awhile.
It'll be nice when we get kernels with gamma controls.
