Will the HTCDev unlock method suffice? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi all,
by using the official HTCDev unlock method will that allow me to install CWM and the Virtuous Sense 2.0 ROM (based off official HTC Desire Z GB)? I remember doing this on a friends HTC ChaCha (using HTCDev then flashing a modified, optimised stock looking ROM as well as CM7 + various kernels), the only thing that one couldn't change was the hboot from what I could tell?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Never mind, found the guide I was looking for . Looks like I was right, it will work just as well as using S-Off but just needing the added step of flashing boot.img
For anyone interested the guide is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453066

No thanks.

It's possible to flash CWM and a custom rom. You can find everything you need for rooting/flashing after unlocking via HTCdev.com in the following thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453066
But it's really recommended to use the xda-way of achieving S-OFF. You can read more about this in the linked topic.

While the HTCDev method may suffice you would still have to figure out how to go about getting a better recovery image and a few other things. So better going with something like the Cyanogenmod guide since you're going to have to do all that anyways.

[Q] Possible to root with HBOOT 1.00+

Ye, we're getting a few questions about this, and I just kinda assumed it was possible. But I'm not so sure now, so can it even be done?
ya im wondering this too...although wont be rooting until a stable gingerbread comes out...
Yes it is possible. In the blayo's instructions how to upgrade HBOOT to 1.00, you can find the method, which gives you a root access. I've managed to root my legend, after accidantly updating it to official stock froyo rom

You mean to downgrade from 1.01 or to upgrade from 0.43? , what threads did you use to manage this process? , I've got an Hboot version of 1.01, Software version 3.15.707.3 (I think it's different from yours) do you think my requirements might work with your rooting methods as well?;o
Yes you can root HBOOT 1.01 I have done it following blay0's guide. You have to downgrade from froyo then root as usual then flash rooted froyo rom.

A guide has now been made and posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845512
This is the thread, just read the Prerequirements and Rerequirements, then follow the instructions for Already OTA updated with HBOOT 1.00. It is true that this thread gives you instrucions how to upgrade HBOOT and keep root, but with froyo ota installed, you already have upgraded HBOOT, so this instrucions here are just for rooting it.
Good luck

Why isn't rooting and custom ROMs as easy as the standard Desire!?

I've done a fair few flashes with my Desire and always found it quite easy to follow and do, but I am so, so, so confused about how to go about attacking the HTC Desire.
Essentially, I want to root it and install a custom ROM (maybe change a radio, that's it). However, there is no set of instructions in any one thread, it's all over the place.
So far, i've managed to permroot my brothers phone using Visionary. Now, the next step is getting Clockwork Recovery. However, there seems to be two version 2.x (installed by ROM manager) and version 3.x. Apparently the former doesn't work for CM7... but I cannot find how to actually get Clockwork 3.x installed (easily...).
What are the most popular DesireHD ROMs and do they all require Clockwork 3.x? Also, what is S-Off... and do I need it!?
Because standard Desire does not have nearly as tight security as DHD has. You need S-OFF to get clockworkmod, and if you want to flash CWM 3.x, you need ENG S-OFF. Only gingerbread roms need CWM 3.x.
S-OFF: Phone security off, internal memory becomes read/write, you can flash anything you want, no version checks etc.

Hmm... OK, I mean this is for my brother who is in no way technically inclined Perhaps we'll just leave it rooted for now and see if an automated tool appears for the Desire HD in the future

It does not get much more automated than my Radio S-OFF Tool / ENG S-OFF Tool..

I suppose so. So basically, the steps are:
Root phone - Done
S-Off/Eng S-Off
Install Clockwork Mod
Install ROM
The bit I find trouble with is how to do the clockwork mod bit. It seems like CM is the best DHD ROM, but that requires Clockwork Recovery 3.whatever and to get that installed you have to go through a ton of SDK stuff. Is there an easy way to get it installed?

Simple answer, no.
Please try following the advice you are being given and search the development forum, if your not willing/able to devote the time to reading up on S-OFF and installing CM7 please leave well alone and save us all a little time
To be honest I think that dhd is quite easy to root. You have one click tool in stickies so really a monkey could do it.
I'm attempting to root my girlfriends galaxy s and it's really complicated. Download this download that check if you have 3button startup, get Odin and so on....

Yeah, downgrading makes it a bit harder, true. But after downgrading it is a breeze.

Visionary will not do it, but I might make a tool to handle all those downgrade commands. I am busy now, however, so you should not wait for it.

I wouldn't hold your breathe, whilst there is a simple-ish downgrade route the chances of anyone going to the great effort of needlessly finding and exploiting a new security flaw are remote. Anyone desperate for root will probably take the downgrade route and anyone unable to grasp the steps involved would probably be better served by a stock rom
I'm looking forward for an automatic tool to downgrade...Jkoljo

Tech support, without root access you are unlikely to do anything terminal to your DHD software wise, so that should limit your tech support to hardware issues. With root access ham fisted people are returning phones with user inflicted software problems

Once you've unlocked the Legend download and run the HTC Supertool V3 from your machine, select option 1 then option 3 and you'll be permanently rooted, then you can install rom manager and deploy whatever rom you want.
So, if I vaguely recall correctly,...
This basically means we won't need the gold-card trick anymore.
I use my Legend for app testing, both CM7 and Blayo ROM as a proxy for stock. I avoid real stock ROMs because they tend to be a pain to re-root etc.
So perhaps I can try real stock ROMs and be able to switch back that much easier...

nope... just the unlock bootloader... but you can use most of the S-OFF function.
with this you can flash your recovery part of your phone and also have system writes.

4. Q: Does rooting do any of the following? 1. Wipe the data? 2. Unlock the bootloader? 3. Change the recovery ?
A: You have to unlock the bootloader before rooting. It won't wipe the data or change the recovery.

6. Q: Is rooting confirmed on HTC? I got the latest HTC update and it's 2.3.3, not 2.3.7, and rooting is unsuccessful. Will I need custom rom?
A: Make sure your HTC is in S-off state. If rooting fails in S-off state, it's caused by different firmware Version.

Another reason why this person needs to refrain from rooting their device. It's very clear to me that either this person has 1) done absolutely no research prior to wanting to root their device. They'd know that rooting alone will not do what they want it to do 2) it's a spammer promoting their site 3) afraid of ADB and doing it the proper way.
When I posted that web site all, I was trying to help the People who has trouble downgrading through ADB by turn S-Off with adb then root your phone

[Q]Visionary+ Apk

Hi, I've been trying to fully S-OFF my buddy's new MyTouch 4G Glacier that he ordered online. It has Android 2.3.4 and I was able to unlock bootloader and put clockworkmod touch recovery. But he wants a Rom and custom kernel. Flashing kernels won't work via fastboot or they do, but don't actually apply. I wanted to just fully Perm-S-OFF it with the guide in Dev thread, but the link to Visionary+ apk isn't working. I've searched n searched on XDA and Google. All links I find are either BS malware or 404'd lol. Does anyone have a copy of it I could get? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Drew

Ill wait for the I bricked by friends phone thread u will create later on.
Why can't you flash as is? Did you unlock the boot loader via HTC dev unlock? If so, you will need to relock it, then find the guides to downgrade to froyo, and then root from there...
Well my intention is not to give bad advice but rather state what worked for me. If this method can lead to a bricked device then i appologise for the bad info.

Such a lot of mess...
A phone unlocked with HTCDev should receive custom kernels, if it doesn't - it means the kernels aren't being flashed correctly and OP should learn to use fastboot.
A phone unlocked with HTCDev won't get downgraded unless relocked.
Without downgrading there won't be S-OFF of any kind. Neither gfree nor root.sh work on Gingerbread.
Rooting isn't S-OFF.
Putting custom ROM on isn't rooting.
To flash anything from recovery only, without using fastboot, S-OFF is required.

I have achieved S-OFF a long time back and updated my ROM. I needed to use the terminal emulator the other day in super user mode but was denied SU access. Remembering back I had used visionary to obtain root and thus su access. Visionary no longer runs (it appears to lock up in a black screen) nor am I able su access.
How can one obtain su access after s-off has been achieved and the phone has downloaded an update?
su reports the su binary is out of date.
