[Q] Google Play Movies & TV in UK on Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
I'm new to XDA but have been a long time visitor, I have pre ordered a 16gb Nexus 7 and cant wait but I had a Question
As stated at I/O the Nexus 7 comes with several extras such as $25 credit (£15 in my case) and a copy of Transformers the Movie, so i was wondering if we are to receive the copy of the movie, what are the chances of Google activating Movies & TV and purchases in the UK?
I know i can download movies using alternative methods but it would be great if it was possible to use Google Play Movies & TV
Thanks

The UK can access movies through the play store already, just not TV shows

Thanks i can see that but i would like to know about purchases as we can only rent as of now in the UK

Oh, i see. Sorry

i wouldn't expect anything anytime soon, especially seeing how we haven't even got google music in the uk yet.
for whatever reason media companies seem reluctant to allow decent movie/tv over the internet. all the offerings from lovefilm, netflix, film4 and the like are pretty disappointing.

couldnt agree more about the lack of decent tv/movies
I have got google music on my htc one s.... although i cant download music i have managed to add my own collection to it :victory:

i don't understand the attitude of the film companies. it's almost impossible to get decent content online, and then they wonder why people download stuff illegally.
mate of mine wanted to watch a film, but there's no rental store near him and he didn't want to wait 2-3 days to get a postal rental. so he got it off torrent and the film studios lost a few quid. their loss not his.
at least we've got spotify in the uk for music - and if you can afford a cheap NAS it's a great way to get at your music on the go.

T-mobile TV

Whats the general consencers on the mobile TV ? after trying it out I am far from impressed, picture quality is like 3/10 maybe 5/10 if your watching somebody who's not moving, the sound I thought was pretty good but to pay for that service.....not on your nelly !
@ the moment it's free and i'm still not going to use it again screwed my poor eyes up watching all these grains, but thats just my opinion.
I never saw vodafone TV work, can anyone confirm if it's the same sort of quality ?
the only comparison I have is on three. that is spot on with real live tv. I agree with you, as the tmobile service stands I won't be paying for it!
if the content changed more often (i.e daily/live tv) i'd be tempted to subscribe, especially as it is pretty cheap on the monthly option
If you are really serious about tv on your device... I would get an unlimited data plan and buy a slingbox. I just got a slingbox for fathers day. I can watch every channel from Concast. Plus I can control my DVR and watch all my recorded programs. It sure beats Cingular TV, or what ever they call it.
Slingmobile also works over wi-fi...
John
Better that nowt
I believe £3.50 (t-mobile - uk) is not too much of a price to pay.. but the quality is that if "3" when it started its video promo a few years ago. To be honest though we all pay through the nose for this sort of product through ads anyway. Me personally ,I would rather wait for for intergration on DVB-H (not DVB-T) or an add on where you would pay a one off fee like you do for a set top box. Until then, this service is an added bonus for a network that does more for it's customer like say Orange/Vodaphone don't.
The internet has been mobile for a while now even though Vodaphone has started to coin in on this phase.
Saying that I just cancelled my Sat subscription cos I could watch the Nasa space launch within my internet bundle. Plus I can watch 24, lost etc via the network channels anyway, So My Vario 2 is more than capable and I get to take it where I want when I want. (Hopefully the signal in cleethorpes will be better next time I go to the seaside (coast)) Hehe
@Johndawg, I was actually looking at getting a slingbox a littel while ago. So you would say by far this is the best way to have mobile TV on your pocket pc in regards to quality ? Does it matter what slingbox you get or are they about the same in what they offer for this service ? Also are you on web & walk £7.50 m8 ?
@Scootytoo, I to am thinking about canceling my Sky subscription, I can't believe how pants it become, but I love my football and thats where they shaft ya when you subscribe to a package as well as I now have the broadband max included, clever buggers !

There has been many forms of mobile tv over the past couple of years where the solution (very simliar to the slingbox) has pumped media via wlan/net etc. The tech was very limited and fussy. I.e using tv card with a stream app. Too much messing around and the end result not worth the effort. Besides, this slingbox is a clean idea for people with land lines and home broadband. I have had this contract with t-mobile since they were known as one to one. Swapped once to get the spv e200 just so I could watch media such as this. then came back to t-mobile for compact, vario and now the vario 2. I don't have a land line so therefore the slingbox won't work for my family as this is my only means of net access. What I'm trying to do is streaming vid or music from my set top box or sat box (freesat - at present) then onto my brake out box for nvidia tv/vid card combie. Not perfect, but does the job as I save the media then drop it on to flash card to use later. But Recently I wanted to watch the nasa online tv station for latest launch, vario 2 just couldn't cope so I used my Tablet pc with vario 2 as the modem. It was good, but not true mobile tv. As for sat... Like I said before we pay for media via the products I.e ads, then they get upset cos you want to cancel. fair enough I was only paying 15 pounds per month, but for three shows a week such as lost, 24 and daybreak. it would have been cheaper to wait for the box sets. but I have ended up with Freesat which as you may know is better than a standard freeview box. bonus!

Working Media Hub!!!

http://androidfeens.com/?p=2812
This is the Epic 4G's update to enable Media Hub on their device.
It seems like its working on the Vibrant.
sweet.. just download it and installed.. it works really great..
How much are rentals?
Pricing sucks for Media Hub. It won't catch on unless it becomes competitive with that of iTunes or Amazon even it is the only means to buy/rent movies and TV shows. Why pay 2.99 for South Park episodes when I can download them for free and put them on my phone? Rentals are 2.99 and only available for some movies and the purchase price for movies are 9.99. I haven't seen any rental options for TV shows.
Bought a TV show it wont even play

Exactly, I was looking forward to this until I saw the pricing
Still says Coming Soon on mine.
What a huge huge disappointment! The movies are from like the 90s (clueless? Really?) And they want me to buy it for $10??????? Geez

yeah. shows should be 1 buck and movies 5 at the most. why would i want a $10 movie on my phone when i have about 500-700 Xvid/divx moveis on my comp for free
Installed ok but I agree, they should have more content. It's a big yawn right now.

Besides, I can "rent" for $1 down the street. Why would I pay $3 from my phone.
For crying out loud. Media Hub isn't even officially out yet and you guys are already complaining. How about you wait for it to be officially out, then complain? Then again, half of the people on this site are impatient.

It is officially out since they released the OTA Sprint Epic update with working Media Hub app.
More content providers will be on board in the future. ABC is the next provider to jump on board.

Important part: "down the street".
Some people are not as studious as you.
Yeah, its totally unreasonable for anyone to charge for a legal download of a product. Especially since you have so much illegal content already on your computer! Samsung should download all their shows from bit torrent, that way they could give them to everyone for free!
To stay relevant to this post, I agree that the prices are much too high. 99 cent shows would be perfectly reasonable.

Looking for a good low cost or free way to watch tv shows.

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if any of you knew of a program or way to watch tv shows on the vibrant. I'm wantin to watch season one and two of the tv series Castle
Any thoughts?
The easiest method would be to buy the DVDs and rip them using Handbrake.
Try TV.com from the apparently market and it's free
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I thought tv.com only showed clips and you have to pay for the full show
No. TV.com is completely free, but thus the selection is limited. There are some decent CBS shows on it - I watched the pilot of the new Hawaii Five-0 on it.
Handbrake doesn't let you rip encrypted DVDs, so it's usless for you.
With as much TV as I watch while working, I got JetFlix. I went and dropped the $50 bucks for the year. Quality is alright... but I mostly listen to TV as I work. Old habit I picked up on when I worked from home.
It has tons of shows. It is always updating. and you can download them to watch when there is no wifi or 3g.
that's my 2 cents.
Wait for froyo then you can watch tv shows on hulu

Bitbop. its 9.99 a month but you get to watch an ass load of shows
Best investment I've ever made... SLINGBOX !!... it was 300 bucks for the Pro_HD but you get to watch everything you watch at home, Live, every channel, free... just need high speed internet at home.. very easy setup, and awesome quality and you can change channels and everything. It's like being at home !!
You have plenty of options but between justin.tv and atdhe.net I think you're all covered

amazon movies

I know this is probably ancient news for most people but I just found out I can watch all the movies I want on Amazon for free. You have to have a Amazon prime account though. Just as good as netflix I think.
No charge? In any ways?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
No charge if you have Amazon prime accoun which is 79$ a year.
Cheaper than netflix.
What kind of movies does Amazon have?
$80 year and can watch as much as you want?
ETA: Ok I found it and looked. Pretty much the same stuff Netflix has.
Do you knowif it works with a rooted Xoom? Google rentals don't seem to work (drm issue?).
youd probably want tocheck out the movies they have. So far the ones I've seen are alot like what they have on Netflix. They have a lot. And the $80 also gets you 2 day shipping free and next day for $4 when you buy stuff . that's the best thing about prime because I'm always ordering things from Amazon and don't like waiting a week to get it. As far as rooted xooms it should work because its just streaming the movie. The video quality is pretty good I was watching a HD Yellowstone movie that looked awesome.
Netflix is cool though, like the original. I don't think its cool when big company's come in and because they have more sources to draw from and offer a catch like cheaper shipping. Netflix is trying too, scoring Mirimax recently.
Not that the deal on amazon is bad, its just a shame.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
yeah I love Netflix. Have it on 4 devices works grate on my my Samsung vibrant. I just thought I'd let people know there is a way to watch movies on there xoom if there not going to make Netflix for xoom. Don't know ifits true but I read somewhere the the Netflix app is just for snapdragon devices. Hard telling when orif they'll make it for xoom. Like G voice.

If it's anything like the google books app, it isn't an option.
I'm guessing it's to stop lame freetard just pirating everything rather than buying.
Those scumbags really annoy me, as it means I end up paying more to finance their freetard lifestyle.
Not to say you're crazy Peter, but some of us "freetards" are forced to pirate. For instance I live in a place where I can't buy The New Yorker unless I pay about 10 pounds for it, and it's 3 weeks old. If I actually bought it I'd consider myself a paidtoomuchtard. I live where there is no Hulu, or iPlayer, so again I'm forced to pirate. Today I wanted to watch Matt Taibbi talk to Elliot Spitzer on Al Gore's TV station and was forced to use a VPN because I was geoblocked. Yes I know I'm a rare case, but me likeee pirateee!
All that said, could you explain why, and exactly when you are forced to pay more for any content you consume? Movie prices have only risen due to inflation, music may actually be cheaper now than when I bought my last CD late last century due to ITunes (iTards?), and the costs of wired and wireless internet is solely driven by oligopolistic carriers, not the volume of data being pirated? Print media has definitely taken it on the chin, and you have a good argument if you were to talk about The Times' paywall costing you money, but before the online days you had to pay for a newspaper, and I can't speak to whether or not that price, adjusted for inflation, is markedly higher or not. It has taken many pressmen's jobs, reduced demand for newsprint, but in this it has slowed the ravaging of forests and the resultant pollution that comes from paper making.
