Hi!
Like most of you, i´m planning to buy this lovely tablet.
So now i´m wondering what will be the best way to get it connected to the internet via an android smartphone.
I was thinking of some sort of on-demand bluetooth data sharing.
Is there already a battery saving app to do something like that?
If i would have to enable the hotspot every time i want to look something up on the tablet when i´m in class that would be almost a dealbreaker too me.

i think bluetooth tethering should work out of the box depending on your phone battery life is still very ok (i use it laptop-galaxy nexus)

Bluetooth isn't a very fast connection compared to WiFi... and it's also very range-limited. So if you can get it to work, I don't think you'll be happy with the speed.
What's wrong with using your phone as a Wifi Hotspot? That's that I do.
I think you'll find better performance using your phone as a hotspot rather than pairing up via bluetooth. Not sure what phone you have but my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus both work great as hot spots and get decent battery life continuously on. If you run AOKP you can set a toggle in the drop down menu for wireless hotspot making it simple to turn it on and off whenever you need it.
The Nexus 7 has built-in Wi-Fi. You are solely responsible for obtaining internet connectivity through an internet service provider as the Nexus 7 does not support mobile connectivity.
In order to use the Nexus 7, you understand that you will need your own 802.11a/b/g/n access point Wi-Fi router.
does this mean we cant use wireless tether on our nexus?

No...it means it has no radio to connect to 3g/4g

that might be very tricky but it would be awesome! Following situation: Me sitting in a sub, galaxy nexus in my pocket and the nexus 7 in my hands. Now, I would like to activate Tethering via the tablet on my galaxy nexus and be online 5-6 seconds later. Anyone an idea?

Found myself in the same situation yesterday in the coach on the way home from work. Had a lap full of nexus 7 and earphones whilst trying to pull out my GNex out of my pocket hoping that the driver doesn't slam on the breaks!
Have just decided to leave tethering turned on on my GNex and when I pull out my tab, just flick on the wifi so it connects. Not ideal on battery for the GNex but it works.
I use bluetooth tether on my vision.
Find it saves a lot of battery power.
I leave the 2 devices connected constantly, for tablet talk, and just leave the option to allow bluetooth tethering turned on on my vision.
So when I don't have wifi, I just tap 'connect' on my n7 and I'm good to go

I've had the same irritation using wifi hotspot function with my GS2. Just tried the bluetooth tether and it works just fine. Many thanks for this suggestion!

I stopped using bluetooth tethering because it would autodisconnect whenever a wifi signal was around and then doesnt reconnect. As for wifi it will stay connected and maintain positive connection longer.

I leave the Bluetooth Tethering option ticked on my Galaxy Nexus and connect with my Nexus 7 (via Settings > Bluetooth > tap on Galaxy Nexus) when I need to (or just place a shortcut on your homescreen).
The problem is that Bluetooth Tethering cuts out after a few minutes (known bug) and I have to repeat. But since it cuts out, it doesn't drain the battery at all (unless I am actively using the data connection, of course).
I suggest using foxfii and PDAtablet for Bluetooth tethering. A few apps won't recognize the internet, however you don't have to worry about it cutting out. And it still uses Bluetooth so there is less battery drain than WiFi.
Just always remember while Bluetooth tethering with whichever option to turn OFF your WiFi on the tablet. If not it will keep searching for WiFi even though your BT tethered, and cause data drop.

You could probably use Tasker to kick WiFi Tethering on on your phone when it detects your tablet neaby (via bluetooth), so when you want to connect, you turn wifi and bluetooth on on the tablet.
EDIT: Of course, you can also use Tasker to turn WiFi Tether on on your phone based on your location, the absense of your work/home wifi, the time of day, and many other options or combinations of options. It's a really useful app, IMO.

I'm trying a slightly different scenario. I don't want Bluetooth tethering, I want WiFi tethering but with Bluetooth connected so I can use Tablet Talk. It almost works. For a short while it'll work that way and then the WiFi drops on my Galaxy Nexus and won't reconnect until I disconnect BT again.
I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum since I've since determined the problem is with my GNex and not my N7.
I'm curious as to how people are using BT tethering though. In my experience there are too many applications that don't work over the BT tether. Are those of you tethering over BT just using the browser? Seems far more limiting than using WiFi tether... unless of course I'm also trying to connect over BT at the same time.

I've solved my own problem... I've use FoxFi in the past with my TouchPad and didn't find it any better than the built in Tethering. Today I installed it and the add-on on my tablet, and I can safely say that this setup rocks!

Well crap. I was wrong, I had WiFi tethering on the whole time. At least the connection isn't dropping for the moment, but this still isn't the experience I'm going for.

So straight forward but such a revelation for me!! I always hated tethering w/ my phone cuz it sucks the battery and it gets so warm, but the BT tethering is a great alternative. Now my tablet is relevant wherever I go w/ my phone.
+1 on blue tooth.
Whenever I use wifi hotspot for any length of time, my phone will eventually time out and cut the connection. Using bt it will stay tethered for hours on end.

I was curious about this as well. I briefly tried Bluetooth tethering a few days ago with FoxFi and PdaNet, but I noticed that although I could surf the net, I couldn't get Gmail to sync. I didn't try anything else so I don't know what else doesn't work, but is this typical of Bluetooth tethering?

Just tried basic bluetooth tethering and happily sent and received email
Is basic Bluetooth tethering simply pairing the phone and tablet and that's it (no third party apps)? I tried to do that and even though the use internet connection box was checked for both devices (they won't uncheck for some reason either), I couldn't get internet working, which is why I resorted to FoxFi/PdaNet.
Like I said, auto tether from the market is the best option

I can't get my N7 to see my GNex with BT, the GNex sees the N7 though.
Does anyone know if the xperia s can use Bluetooth tethering for internet access??
Edit: never mind found my answer lol. Xperia s connected to n7 via Bluetooth and can successfully surf the net on my n7

It would be nice to just be able to carry my phone in my bag, so that when my tablet is within range of WiFi it uses that, but cal use my phone's 3G connection if wifi isn't available.
What's the best way to achieve this? A wireless hotspot from the phone? Or Bluetooth?
Wifi tether is best way to go. I would suggest foxfi because you can have a wifi password if necessary. Also a free app from the play
store, just be sure to watch your data limit!

Try install BlueVPN(ics client) from Google Play. Activate and pair your device with 3G phone. Launch BlueVPN, Selecet your 3G phone and BlueVPN will do the rest. Good luck

I bought the nexus 7 and still waiting for it to arrive. Sold my NOTE to get this. The reasons were 1) Pure Google Exerience 2) Quad-Core Tegra 3/Bigger screen. I am not much into voice calling (typical nerd) and prefer to communicate over the web.
Although I do have wifi at home for primary usage, I am just wondering can I use wireless Bluetooth tethring to access the web on N7 on secondary basis?
I currently have nokia X2-02 with unlimited internet access and not sure if its good enough for the purpose. Do not want to spend on another phone, just to get wifi tethering.

I don't know about the Nokia and its tethering capabilities. But I tether my HOX to my N7 and I have to say, tethering it to the N7 makes browsing much faster than browsing directly from the HOX (If you get that) I don't know how, but this N7 is epic.
Plus its like 3 clicks and your tethered and on the internet.
So yes, tethering to the N7 is simple and brilliant, as long as you have a device capable of outputting it to the N7.
To answer the HOW - Find your tethering on your phone/device your using the connection from, do anything necessary to set it up, such as the WPA password etc once you've created the hotspot their, your N7 will see it as a wireless connection (wifi) connect it and your all set.
Errr...Thanks for the reply bro but I know how wifi tethring works but right now I don't have any device capable of wifi tethring and just wondering if I can get the bluetooth tethring to work somehow. So its like I want to use my phone data connection on my N7, wirelessly via bluetooth.
I have Bluetooth tethering working with my Sony Xperia S.
The Nexus 7 is capable, it's really just the question whether your phone is.
The good thing about BT tethering is that it uses much less power than a WiFi hotspot.

Ok just to update everyone who is interested, as long as the mobile device supports DUN Bluetooth profile, the N7 can connect to the device and thus you can use the internet. I was able to use my nokia phone to tether my 3G connection via bluetooth. Just pair the devices and check the option on the N7 to use the other device as internet source.

i have tried to connect my N7 via bluetooth to my iPhone 3gs to surf the web but so far have not been able to get it to work although the instructions seemed simple.
Has anyone tried connecting the nexus 4 as a wifi hotspot? My phone can load webpages like google, facebook, XDA really fast. But when I have my laptop connected through portable hotspot I can't even get google.com to open up. Sometimes it does but very very slowly, is this normal for wifi hotspots or is it just something with my connection settings?
My Wi-Fi Hotspot from Nexus 4 works perfectly when I connect my Nexus 7, Playbook, and Galaxy Nexus.

Hmm i tried it with my playbook too, it works but same issue its much slower then what the phone can accomplish!
It's normal for it to be slower (just consider that all requests need to be routed from your laptop, to your phone via WiFi, then to the cell service) but it certainly should be working without issue. Are you using the built-in WiFi hotspot feature? And what carrier?
