Display - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As this tablet is backlit ips display, does this mean we don't have to worry about burn in issues? Perhaps the tablet would make a nice desktop clock when not in use.

Only amoled displays can have this issue.
The thing you should be concerned with is does it have any backlight bleed or ghosting issues.

Screen calibration?

http://www.displaymate.com/OLED_Galaxy_S123_ShootOut_1.htm
The OLED screen on the GS3 is incredible because of it's intense contrast and instant refresh time, but there a many things wrong with it out of the box, and only because Samsung marketing is driving the settings for it....
The color gamut is too high. It looks good in the store but makes the colors look cartoony, and can decrease lifetime of the display. Is there something that can get it closer to the sRGB gamut used by Android? (90-110% of the gamut)
The autobrightness is very poor in this case, as it does not go low enough in the dark, and does not go high enough in the sun. Has anyone made a mod that has proper autobrightness values, with some middle values turned slightly lower for battery savings?
The white point is very very blue! This makes the display look more white, but this is actually very bad for the display. Since the reason why Samsung needed to have PenTile is because blue pixels die quickly, why is the white so blue? Is there some way to make it properly white (daylight, about 6500k?), in order for better color accuracy and to preserve display lifespan?
At some point, supercurio released a voodoo screen application, but since then I have not seen any sort of application that can properly calibrate the screen...
My cousin has one and it is not like that.. I would return it

Samsung anything with a screen is this way. Just go look at this TV, they are bluer than anybody else's. They look good in the bright showroom but in your actual house? Not so much unless you just love blue.
I am guessing a fix can happen in aosp/aokp where they have the screen calibration options.

I just found out about Voodoo Color. Maybe we can get some kernels that work with it?

That'd be great. I am on Verizon tho :/. No custom kernels yet.
I love OLED displays I just hate how.blue they are. Atleast this one isn't as blue per that article as some others I have seen.

As far as TV's go, those are way more easy to tweak display settings on than a phone display. I agree that a showroom Samsung is really really blue, but that is easily fixed in the color settings.

Yeah...sorta. lol...
There is a forced level of blue in the service menu you cannot change without proper calibration equipment.
That is beside the point though. I know CM7 had a calibration setting. Does CM9/AOKP have this still? I haven't had a device that could run AOSP in a long time sadly.

Led notification ???

is there a way to get a led notification??
Also wondering... Would come in handy for email / social media notifications.
Go to RadioShack and and buy a Lil led and glue it on the bottom or wherever you want BC this doesn't have and led and one just won't appear from thin air. I would love to have one honestly just like my gn, but it didn't so ima have to survive somehow.

There's no led and there's no buttons to light up, so no. Only sound notifications currently.

I use NoLed on my Sensation because of the lack of a big old led like the Nexus One.
I think the only negative for me in ICS running this app is that it conflicts with the customized sliding lockscreen.
Needless to say I haven't tried the NoLed app on the N7 yet. Anyone have a nandroid and some free time to try it? LOL

I think noled using an lcd would be killer on the battery. It's designed for an amoled screen

An amoled screen doesn't have a backlight, instead each pixel lights up making this type of solution possible. Unfortunately the N7 is a traditional LCD screen, each pixel changes color, but does not light up, the WHOLE backlight would have to be on to see anything on the screen, this would no doubt have a serious effect on battery life, and screen life.

Ah I see. Thanks for the clarification. There are battery saver options in the app, but I see where you are coming from regarding the screen. I use it on my Sensation without an issue. And battery drainage isn't a problem to me anyways.
I am fine without it though. I don't need notifications on the N7 while I have my phone close at hand.

[Q] Hows the screen?

I know its pixel density, and its just perfect to me. However, how is the color saturation and other aspects of the display? Ive read a couple of reviews that said it was a bit dull, but I don't totally believe these big tech blog reviews. If it is dull though, is there anything in the way of color calibration?
I think the colors are great. Of course, it's not an AMOLED, but it gets the job done.

Exactly. Compared it to the S3, and yeah, not an AMOLED. But the screen does not bother me

Lol its got nothing on a Samoled but its definetly not bad, unless you get one that has a warm tone to it. My last c60 replacement had a warm screen, current c70 has a cooler screen and colors look natural as oposed to the bluer and more saturated samoled that im used to on the GNex. There is no color calibration as of yet.
Ok, that pretty much was the only thing holding me back from buying one, but not anymore Probably wont need it, but will we probably get some kind of screen calibration eventually? I just like tweaking things.
Edit: I saw that you mentioned something about the c70 version with the warm colors. Which version is the best one to get?

Battery saving with black colors?

Hi there,
Someone told me that using black themes in my N4 would extend my battery life, I know that using Amoled screens that is true, but what about the N4's screen ? Will I benefit?
Thanks and best regards.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I don't think that's true with the IPS screen. The biggest user of battery life is the backlight, which will be on regardless of the colors being displayed. If you want to save battery life, the best way to do it
To back that up, in this article, David Korn consulting for Energy Star said that "We found that the color on screen mattered very little to the energy color consumption of the LCD monitor". It would work the same with the mobile display in the Nexus 4.
This only applied to AMOLED screens, since Nexus 4 uses IPS LCD, it wouldn't be affected that much. Just dim your screen when in dark places and bright it up on bright places. Auto brightness consumes more battery than doing it manually. CMIIW though.

proving Oled (amoled brand name) superior unlike what your told by mainstream media!

Your told, lcd is brighter in sunlight which is the main reason your tokd Lcd is superior or at least thay say amoled is inferior. Wrong, its because if default settings by the makers. Once rooted with proper kernel(almost every device has em) you can do with amoled what you cant do with lcd. Double the color multipliers from android default of 200 to 400. I use in order of RGB, 320/320/400 to achieve perfect white and black. Also the battery myth, lcd drains less. Thats bullcrap. Amiled black pixel achives pure black because its actually OFF. that is main reason it uses less power than lcd. Instead if going on and on I will just show u proof. I will show you picture of my LGOG(sprint optimus g) and my even aging gnex side by side in sunlight with my shadow on half the screens to show its actual sunny lol. A pic says a lot more than my Bloveating. Im using my sgs4 to post this and used its awesome camera tontake the pic if pic does not show in op I will post in first post. Have a great day peeps. Pics wouldn't attach.must be because of using phone
Pic
2 different pic styles, img and jpeg clearly shows that even with a shattered and pentile matrix amoled screen its brighter in the sunlight. Even did my shadow in it so no one would say....sun wasnt out lmao. Sorry naysayers proof is in the pudding and the gooey pudding is right in front of your face. Proper kernel with amoled is brighter and better battery saver than lcd. Lcd is backlit anyway and most high end phones will use it in the future because it can be bended and manipulated and LCD can't because it is backlit. Only low end phones will be lcd in the future.
I agree with what you've said (I use Samsung phones primarily), but it is true that when displaying white, it uses 3x as much power as an LCD. On mostly black, you're correct; very little power draw.
Tell me about AMOLED burn-in. Since you are increasing the luminosity, I would suspect that burn-in would be faster?
Keeping my eye out for this one...very interesting.
Do you guys mind if I ask what this "burn-in" is and how to fo about it?
Very interesting indeed.

Similar to plasma screen televisions, if you leave an image on the screen for a long time (much more than average), you'll see remnants of it permanently. However, if it's anything like televisions, you can fix it by displaying a white image on the screen (entirely white) for a few hours. I've never had this happen to me and ive owned almost all major Samsung phones. Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, Note 2, and now S4.

burn in
Yes burn in can occur on older like the gnex. Newer amoled is less likely but always set time out of 2 min when color multipliers are set to max. Best settings, for pure white is ,320,320,400 rgb color multipliers. Sorry should have talked about burn in,my apologies .
of course

Just remember in all aspects except maybe battery power AMOLED is superior if your rooted and have a proper kernel (there there look for em) amoled is superior and infinitely more controable then LCD, period. Sorry naysayers look at proof in sunlight

black pixel is actually zero power draw the pixel is off
So how do you get this better color might I ask? You say proper kernel...any way to get it on an S3? Specifically an SGHT999?

I said mostly black. On complete black, you're right. But you're not going to be using an app that's entirely, 100% black, are you?
