$25 Credit? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question -- I've preordered a Nexus 7 16gb and i wanted to use the $25 to grab some tablet apps on my Nook while i wait for it. Only issue is, the credit isn't showing up in my payment options...
Do you get the credit upon ordering, or is that when you activate it?

it looks like you get the credit once the new device is activated. at least, that's how it looked from the google videos.

We get Transfomers: Dark of the Moon, The Bourne Dominon (book), and a couple magazines. Plus the $25 credit, of course.

Question
Is everybody who buys this tablet now or in the store getting 25$ giftcard and films or just the one who are pre-ordering it in Google Play Store?

It says for a limited time, so I assume just those who are pre-ordering. Or the first round of pre-orders, who knows.
I do think it is good the credit/movies and all that will just come on the device. Easiest way to do it.

Strategy
In their developer conference they said that it is new strategy to customers buy more products in Google Play, but he did not say if all tablets have that 25$ gift

provided all pre-ordered devices will get $25 gift.what happens if the device is activated outside US,UK, and Australia? will there still be $25 gift in the form of other currency? thanks

When I ordered mine (Canada), it did showed credit being applicable. Anyways, with the amount of taxes we pay - I guess Google hand out pro-rated credits

Does the credit apply to the play store as a whole, meaning can this credit be applied toward the case or other accessories?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the free credit will show up once your card has been placed and the order shipped and it probably applies to apps or media. The free book, movie and magazines will probably only be accessible if you log into google play from the US or Canada, The UK or Australia the only places where legit pre-orders are available right now.
If you pre-order one and you log in for the first time outside of those countries, you will not be able to access that part of the play store and download the free media. I may be wrong and it all comes pre-loaded but I have a feeling otherwise, I guess we will have to wait and see.

Okay, so the free credit (£15 per device - from the UK); I've ordered 2 tablets together - to save on postage. One for my wife and one for someone else, I ordered it while logged into my google account and unticked the option that said to register the devices to me (as obviously my wife and friend have their own google accounts).
So how will it know to assign the credit to them, is this built into the tablet rather than via the store? Sorry I'm a bit confused and don't want to lose out on the £30 total credit.

Perhaps a card is given in the packaging with a number similar to a credit card number and when you go to input a credit card you type in this number so you can pay with it like that; and then perhaps you can choose between using a credit card or using the gift card.

Credit is given when the actual device is activated.
Credit goes to the Google account used for that activation.

[Q] Any cheaper alternative of ordering in the future?

I was about to pre-order my Nexus 7 (16gb) from the Play store when I saw the total of $280! I live in California, and was really expecting no sales tax, and cheaper shipping. Possibly an option for longer, but cheaper shipping? I don't want to sound like the annoying, unsatisfied customer. I'm merely wondering, will the tablet hit stores in the US? I know the Uk will be getting the 16gb ones the end of July in stores, but couldn't find anything on the US. This would avoid the $14 shipping costs, and would also allow me to make an easier return if something was wrong.
Thanks
Well dont forget since you pre-order it directly from google, they do give you subscription to magazine, 1 free movie and 25$ in the play store.
So in the end, that shipping cost is really not that bad since they make up for it.
Engadget just came out with a story stating that Gamestop will carry the device. They will even give in-store credit if you trade or sell them a tablet.

This + after you factor in the value of your time and the cost of your transportation (gas, taxi, bus, w/e) I would say the shipping costs are far offset...

I wouldn't say NO chance. It WAS up for preorder on the Gamestop site (has since been removed) so I assume there's a possibility that other places will sell it. They might all only sell the 16GB model though since the profit margin on the 8GB version might be too low to bother.
Also, the Gamestop website (when it was up) showed the preorder release date as 7/31/2012 so if you preorder from Google's Play store, and they do release it mid-July like they said, you're paying a little more to get it early which some people don't mind.
Ebuyer.com are taking preorders on the 16gb £199 with free shipping works out cheaper than it does on the google site.
Im guessing that soon other shops/sites will also have it available for preorder soon

If Gamestop has taken down their page it's probably to fix something, I'm sure they'll bring it back later. Also, generally within a few months other companies should start carrying the device, like they did with the Galaxy Nexus. Lastly, you guys should considering that if you do buy from the Play Store, yes you do get charged 13.99$ for shipping, however for 2 day shipping that is incredible, and given the fact that when purchased through the Play Store you get 25$ store credit to purchase apps, books, movies, etc + the magazine subscriptions they bundle for free, I say it's worth it.
on the play store google says
"Sign in to your Google Play account and we'll give you $25 of credit to spend in the Play store, as well as some great free content."
what exactly is this free content? I know the transformers movie is one of them (which i honestly don't care about), and I've heard something about magazines

Also I just took a second look at the cnet article I linked to and it appears that yes Gamestop will also include these freebies and credit. Although I don't know how they'll implement it.

It's probably automatically given to every account that activates a Nexus 7 tablet for like all of July and August or whatever range of time that pick. That's my guess since it seems Gamestop purchases also get the free content.

Hmmm. So the Gamestop page for the Nexus 7 is back up (http://www.gamestop.com/android/tablets/google-nexus-7-16gb-pre-order-only/102893) and they removed any mention of the $25 credit.

I read all the fine print in the google play store when the page was published and im 100 percent sure i read in re: to 25 dollar credit that it was only valid for purchases made from the play store, so unless gamestop is ordering from the play store or something which seems crazy then it would appear there is no credit for orders from them, although i wouldnt be suprised if google didnt argue with someone and gave you a 25 dollar credit if you asked about it.

Maybe that's why the Gamestop page was pulled for like half a down before coming back up. They had the wrong information.
Talked to a Google Rep last night while trying to cancel my 8gb for a 16. I asked him if I'd still get the $25 and he said yes, but only from the play store and only before it hits stores, though he didn't give me a deadline. I assume its sometime in the next 3 weeks.

I can't believe its $280 to Cali! Its only $263 to Hawaii. Generally I'm used to sucking up and forking over extra shipping for Hawaii, but for whatever reason it was relatively cheap.
Unless you want to pick it up at a gamestop or find it through another retailer, i wouldn't expect to find it much cheaper.

$25 play store credit if bought from somewhere other then Google?

I want to buy the 16gb model but Google won't let me order online so I was thinking about buying it from a local retailer. Will I still get the $25 credit if I buy it from GameStop or Walmart?

Yep, i bought mine at local Gamestop recently and upon adding your Gmail account when configuring it for first-time use, Google will add $25 to your G Play account.
In canada futureshop and bestbuy has this msg:
Includes $25 of credit to the Google Play store, for a limited time only!*
when I click on it ,it says:
For a limited time, buy the Google Nexus 7 and it comes included with a $25 credit to spend in the Play store, as well as some great free content like your own copy of Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
*Offer valid while supplies last. Play Store credit comes on pack. No rainchecks.
The part play store credit comes on pack. Hmm. I can purchase a nexus 7 at a local (not future shop/best buy) store right now, but it didn't have anything on the pack. Does anyone know if for Canada it needs this on the pack or will I be eligible for the 25 credit regardless?
Bought mine at Staples (10% employee discount, sweet!) and can confirm that I got the $25 credit. :good:
Yep. Got mine from JB HiFi and got the $25. I didn't expect it so it was a nice bonus
I am getting a replacement Nexus 7 as my first one was defective. If I use a different google account on the replacement does that mean I will get another $25/£15 to use

I've got a personal and a work account on my phone and can use either to purchase apps.
Just curious: are non-play store buyers also getting the $10 google wallet credit? If you don't know what I'm talking about, add a prepaid card in wallet and see what happens.

What are the costs of this phone, REALLY? (tax, customs)

Okay so I want to buy this phone, but I can't get it off Google Play because they don't accept Canadian Visa's.
I want to get it off Handtec for 293.99 Pounds, which is 464ish CAD.
This is coming from the UK, using FedEx 1-4 days.
Now what hidden costs should I look out for? Is there going to be some Custom's Fee when I get my product? Or do I sign and go?

Google Play does accept Canadian Visa's. Not sure where you're getting that from. Just order from Google otherwise be prepared to pay provincial and federal tax, and duty fees on top of the $460-ish cost.
My MasterCard is on Google wallet aka play... Sooo not sure what the issue is...

No, play is derp.
I have a TD Access Card, debit Visa and they deny it cause it's derp. I called up, emailed and I don't think they'll fix it. I'm so annoyed by their lack of PayPal.
That's because its not actually a visa credit card. That's the issue.

On the 3G Version the Transformers Movie is no longer included it is replaced by Ice Age. Also there was no £15 Play credit anymore, although not sure if that was because I was setting it up on an existing account rather than a new account.

I'm grabbing the 32GB Wi-fi version, is that still Ice Age? Would have preferred Transformers but Ice Age is still a decent freebie.
What is the benefit of just giving £15 to new users? Would just encourage old users to create another account and just clog up Google's severs some more.

Just found this on their site:
The $25 Google Play credit on Nexus 7 offer ended September 30, 2012 and must have been redeemed by that date regardless of purchase date.
You do not need to use your entire credit at once; however, your Google Play credit cannot be combined with another payment method. You can continue to use the remaining balance until it reaches $0,00.

Convert the $50 Google Play credit to Gift Cards

I already have about $50 in Play Store Credit. I'll get another $100 from two Nexi purchases. I wish there was a way to convert that credit into Google Play Store Gift Cards so I can gift them. It's still a Google Play Store Gift card and goes straight to Google. I just don't understand why Google doesn't allow us to do something this simple and obvious. Anyone have any workarounds to make something like this possible?
I saw some suggestions on creating an App that takes in-app payments and using it. Seems convoluted and I'd lose 30%. But I guess I may just try that.
That is convoluted, but if you were going to not be able to use it at all in a year it would be better than losing it.
Edit: does it work to pay for Google Music? Maybe try that?
Because if they allowed you to exchange them for a physical gift card you can resell them to a number of sites that buy gift cards. Most if not all of them do not accept e-gift cards or cards that expire like the Nexus gift.
Ebay does not allow selling e-gift cards either (although plenty do). I'm not sure what happens if you get flagged on eBay selling an e-gift card.
To be honest I don't really know what the credit can be used for. I guess whatever crap that's on the play store like music and movies which I can probably get for free otherwise?
I'll likely just use it to support app developers and buy paid versions of their stuff.

I'm pretty sure you are just emailed a code for the $50 when ordering the phones. So all you have to do is give that code to the person you want to gift it too and they redeem it

That's right. I already got the code for the 6P which will arrive tomorrow. The problem with the $50 code is that it's a lot for a single person. But if I could have split it into 2 $25 or the $100 into 5 $20, it would make a much easier gift to give to family and friends.
I already have paid apps for any apps that I use. I have a few in the wish list, but nothing really compelling. I'm never going to buy any of the ridiculously priced movies. I get most of my music from Amazon. But most of my music is really ripped from my CDs. Google doesn't have a particularly good India music collection.
