Ditto. They can cut you off if you go over a certain amount (most people say around 2-3GB a month), but so far I've used around that amount and been good. I know some people who have gone way over (5GB) and been fine too. If you use them, don't fill in the proxy fields in the APN, just the MMS proxy stuff. If you stream constantly, this service is not for you. However for anything else it's great. And you get real AT&T speeds (I've personally gotten up to 5 Mbps in some areas).

Yup ive used 2gb and been fine, and have also heard of people going over 5gb and been fine. But id say 2gb would be the safe zone, which is probably plenty for most. Just use wifi whenever you can

my sim will be coming soon and since im gonna be using a pre 2 i dont think data limits are anything to worry about. i just want stable reliable signal where I can text and get calls reliably from a certain area sprint doesnt cut it but ATT does. my question is i am a part time promotor for clubs so i send out a crap load of texts (on sprint i saw my amount and it was around 22000 lol)
if i decide to make this my main phone i will be consuming that much.....phone calls arent an issue i mainly talk only to my gf for long periods of time at night lol
will i be kicked off for this usage?

Hey if I only wanted 5-10 of data a month with no minutes or texts is that possible?and if it is how much would I be looking at for just 5 Gb of 4G data a month.I have a unlocked HTC sensation 4G a t-mobile smartphone.so do I order a sim card from straight talk?how much is a sim card?can I call and order a sim card and activate the sim for just monthly data?I would appreciate it if someone would please explain my qwestions. Yes, it does. GSM SIMs and (for example) the SIMs used by Verizon (I don't, know if, Sprint has switched to a SIM based system for their up and coming LTE network) would not be compatible. You CANNOT USE A device like the Sensation on a CDMA network, period.

Sprint uses "integrated SIMs" for their LTE phones, which basically means they still use the same MEID/ESN system. Identical to the old 3G/WiMax system. And yes, you're correct. You can't use a GSM phone on a CDMA network period. You can, however take a hybrid GSM/CDMA phone (like a Droid 2 Global) and get it to work on GSM networks by hacking the radio not to ignore domestic networks like AT&T and T-Mobile.

Wrong. Any 3g ATT sim card will work, there is no technical differences. The only time moving forward you will need a newer simcard is for when LTE (real "4g") launches.

no one is getting HSPA+, it's being backhauled until March. I don't know why it says we have H+ in the status bar though
backhaul isn't just going to magically happen when march hits, it will happen as soon as the backhaul hits the site and is up and running, which is a never ending thing that has been going on for the past year or so.
EDIT: Oh and to the OP, more than likely something is wrong with the phone if other phones pick up 3g just fine.
But the best thing is, the ATRIX an the INSPIRE 4G will not be getting LTE HAHAHA AT&T FTW

This is incorrect on multiple levels.
Firstly, straight talk is a GSM carrier, which provides MVNO service for At&t, as well as t-mobile. The evo is a CDMA phone, which is compatible with that network.
The service that you're thinking of would be page plus, which provides verizon service in a mvno environment. The problem is that to use page plus, one must have a valid verizon ESN, which the evo does not have.
The evo must be used on a sprint mnvo, such as ting, or cricket. Virgin mobile will *not* work with the evo, as they require specific ESN numbers outside of the sprint general database.
It is possible to put an evo on page plus, straight talk, boost, and a few others. Straight Talk has gsm phones as well as cdma phones last time I checked. I haven't personally flashed an EVO to page plus but I've seen them. I have an EVO currently on boost, almost anything is possible if you put your mind to it! I
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I think Page Plus is probably the best route. I had a Droid X on it. I have flashed an Evo Shift before to page plus. I don't think 3G worked but i use WIFI mostly anyways. I then flashed it to a Mexican company Iusacell and gave it to a friend that lives down there. Never got the 3G to work though it was a tough phone to flash.
I've know a few people with EVO's on Boost Mobile. They're really happy with it.

Flash to prepaid?

Are you implying that you currently have a phone on a postpaid plan, and you want to use it on a prepaid plan? What are you thinking of flashing?
well ill put it this way. my friend wants a nice phone on prepaid. doesn't care about cost. he has 2 phones now. one is on straight talk other is on T-Mobile..he wants a nice phone I was curious if anyone has done it and if anyone had any suggestions on what phone to use with what prepaid. like Sprint Verizon or AT&T iphone 4/5 on tmobile or straight talk. or a Sprint galaxy s3...he'll use just about any new-ish phone.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I guess the 1st decision is what service he wants to go with. Phones are either CDMA or GSM, and not both, with few exceptions (like the new iPhones). So, if he gets a Verizon phone, he can't use it on T-Mobile or AT&T prepaid, and vice versa.
Since cost of the device is no issue, he just has to buy one that's factory unlocked (a.k.a., SIM unlocked).
apologies, I personally have an s3 through Sprint which Ive rooted along with numerous other phones just never did anything of this nature. so I should have him buy a phone that takes a SIM card we'll say and use either straight talk SIM card or tmobile? as an example.

If the phone he has/gets is unlocked, he should have no problem swapping the SIM cards, and using the phone on either provider. If you want help mulling over specifics of what particular phone to buy, post it here. You'll get shut down if you start a thread asking what phone to buy.

"Best" is subjective. Some would say to buy it from the manufacturer, as then you would have warranty, return policy, & everything.
well I talked to him and he says he'd prefer to go the galaxy s2 or 3 route. would it be cheaper to buy a unlocked GSM s2? im just confused about the SIM ordeal and what carrier to go with, with what phone. I've tried changing MEID before on a epic to use it on straight talk, which it was CDMA but I couldn't get the MEID to write properly so that was a fail.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, you don't have to deal with that stuff with GSM phones. That whole "flashing to another provider" thing is a CDMA issue. Basically, any unlocked GSM phone will work, with any GSM provider.
Another thing to consider, though, is 4G data speeds. AT&T (and their MVNOs) and T-Mobile (and their MVNOs) use different frequencies for the highest speed cellular data connections. For example, if you buy an AT&T phone and then unlock it, you won't get 4G data speed on Simple Mobile, since Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller. Therefore, even when you've finally decided which phone to buy, you still need to decide which bands you want it to have, based primarily on which service provider you plaln to go with. One exception to this is the Galaxy Nexus HSPA+, which is pentaband, and can be used just about anywhere, at full speed.
nice. any suggestions for iphone? My apologies. just seems those appear to be the cheapest route via ebay for a gsm unlocked one.

Free ATT or Tmobile Sim with Monthly Plan - Straight Talk

-----Update 27 Nov-----
This coupon code no longer works. If I find another one I will update this thread.
I have now used this service with google voice for over 2 weeks with great service. I have had the same speeds and coverage as I did with my att phone. I have not used enough data to get notified or limited in speed, if and when this happens I will update my thread.
There is one issue with straight talk and any MVNO it seems. I used two google voice numbers (personal, work) and I turn off the voicemail forwarding on my phone so that the voicemail for each works correctly (Otherwise both GV numbers would forward to the same voicemail account). Straight talk does not have the ability to change the voicemail forwarding phones. My workaround for now is to extend the number of rings out to where GV will forward to voicemail (I am in process of testing this now).
To use two GV numbers on one phone you set both as home numbers and just use the app for texts from one. There are more detailed ways to forwards texts from the second phone but if you want this info PM and ask or search for it as it is available elsewhere.

What's the data transfer like? I'm really liming the idea of two phones unlimited everything for $90 as opposed to $165 for 700 mins unlimited text and calls to any mobile but only 2 GB of data. Do I need to flash anything to make everything work properly?

you don't have to flash anything. just gotta change the apn settings to st and you're good to go. the SIM packet has the apn settings that you change in network settings.
Straight Talk data connection is the same as ATT would be in your area, except, NO LTE. You will not grey LTE with straight talk. And don't count on using much more than 2gb of data either, I near they send warning texts but don't actually have a what to cut off your data.
I've been on Straight Talk ATT for 3 months and love it. Just know it's limitations. I've never gone over 600mb data in my life though. I work when I'm at work, not much time to stream videos, the rest of the time I'm at home on wifi. Also ATT sucks in my area.

Solavei???

So I'm on solavei, and I'm debating switching back to tmobile itself. Reason being I only get no more than 14.80 mbps, speed test goes that high and just stupid like it hit a wall. I'm using a t999 s3, do you think I'd get faster speeds on actual tmobile?

Just for future reference, I did a test today and can confirm a couple things. I did a few speed tests with my solavei SIM card sitting my phone in one spot, got about 380-1400 ping. Switched in a tmobile SIM using three truly unlimited plan and ping blew me away, it was constantly 80-99ish. As for down and up speed I was getting about 6-13 on solavei with about 1.5 up constant. And on the tmobile SIM I got about 10-14, but I expect faster once my phone number port is complete I was told to expect it being choppy. So far I notice a huge difference in use around town, as I was running errands all day.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Also, even pegging out at 14.7 mbps (for some reason solavei doesn't let you go faster) I couldn't even watch a 2 minute YouTube video, now I can not only click hd version, but it doesn't keep buffering.

I don't recall but it was a specific one that was sent to me via a automatic text from solavei. Nick, I'm seeing Solavei speeds of up to 14mb/s too, which is personally plenty fast for me. When you consider that Tmobile's $50 plan slows down data speeds after 500mb, Solavei compares better

I can see where you would think that, but a couple of things. Solavei is not just $49, the tax brings it to $58. So by that logic for $12 more you can get access to ALL tmobile towers, priority on your service, and no speed limits. Being a tech guy you wouldn't want to have a speed limit. The other thing is customer service, and not feeling like you're trying to be a part of a pyramid scam when you want to just sign into your dashboard abd pay your bill.

Solavei is only a mvno, and they only piggy back towers, and at that, only some of the towers.

Again, what APN are you guys using? I wonder if you changed APNs if it would improve?
I've used and tested every variation that was provided, including the dual apn's, but slavery sends an automatic apn setup through a special text message, which is what worked the best. I'm on T-Mobile note, but if you really want nee to get that apn for you, you can pay for the solavei plan, cuz I'm not doing that again lol.
